- Unlocking Your Potential: Entrepreneur Labels Holding You Back
Mompreneur? Entrepreneur? Let's Talk Labels (and Why They Might Be Holding You Back) Ever feel like you’re squeezing yourself into a box that’s just… too small, my love? Like you’re trying to define your entire brilliant entrepreneurial universe with a single, limiting label? If you're a Foundation Builder, just starting out on this crazy entrepreneurial adventure, let’s chat about the "M" word – "Mompreneur" – & why it might be time to consciously choose your labels, or maybe even ditch them altogether. Now, don’t get me wrong, I get it. Motherhood is a HUGE part of who I am. My kids are my world – my teenage daughter’s navigating the minefield of GCSEs (send chocolate & wine!), my school-aged daughter thinks glitter is a food group, my toddler daughter believes furniture is for climbing, & my youngest son… well, the baby’s mostly just exploring the joys of projectile vomiting. It's beautiful chaos, right? A constant symphony of shrieks, snacks, & sticky fingers. And, full disclosure, there’s usually a Paw Patrol soundtrack playing somewhere in the background of my working day (and yes, I know all the words). So, yeah, being a mum is a massive part of my entrepreneurial journey. But honestly, it's not the whole story. I'm also a partner, a daughter, a friend, a PhD researcher constantly battling deadlines, a dog mum to two miniature pinchers who think my office chair is their personal trampoline, & a woman who really appreciates a good cuppa (or a glass of wine… let’s be honest, sometimes a mum just needs a glass of wine!). I’m multifaceted, just like you. So why reduce ourselves to a single label? Before Femmeprenista truly took off, I remember agonizing over whether to even mention being a mum on my website. I worried it would make me seem less professional, less capable. It took a lot of inner work, and a few "sliding doors" moments, to realize that my experience as a mum is actually a strength , not a weakness. The thing about the term "mompreneur" is that it can sometimes feel a bit… diminutive, right? Like it's defining us by just one aspect of our many brilliant selves. It can feel less official, less serious, like we’re playing at business while the “real” entrepreneurs are out there building empires. But guess what? We’re building empires too, my love. We’re juggling board meetings with bedtime stories, crafting marketing strategies between school runs, & negotiating deals while wiping noses. That takes serious skill, my friend. We are entrepreneurs, full stop. Motherhood is a powerful part of our story, but it's not our only chapter. My research into female entrepreneurship actually highlights how often women are defined by a single role, diminishing their diverse skills & contributions. A study by found that women who own their multifaceted identities are more likely to attract broader opportunities and achieve higher levels of success. And this really isn’t just semantics, my love. Labels have power. They shape how we see ourselves, how others perceive us, & the opportunities we attract. If we’re constantly defining ourselves as "just a mum trying to make it work," we might be inadvertently limiting our own potential. In the early days of Cocoista Ltd, my afro hair & beauty venture, I struggled to position myself. I kept thinking, "Who am I to teach others about business when I'm still figuring it out myself, while also juggling four kids and a PhD?" It was that fear, that feeling of not being "enough," that almost stopped me from sharing my knowledge and truly scaling the business. It wasn't until I fully embraced my unique experience and expertise that things started to shift. Own Your Label (Or Don't!) So, what’s the takeaway here? It’s simple: own your label. If "mompreneur" feels empowering to you, fantastic! Rock it! If you prefer "entrepreneur," "business owner," or "world-dominating force of nature," even better! Go for it! Or, if like me, you’d rather not be boxed in at all, then ditch the labels altogether. The important thing is that you get to choose. You get to define your entrepreneurial identity on your terms. You get to build the business of your dreams, a business that fits seamlessly into your life (yes, even with the kids, the dogs, & the never-ending laundry). You get to create a legacy you’re proud of, a legacy that says, "I did this. I built this. And I did it my way." Building a Business Beyond the Label Building a thriving business, regardless of your chosen label (or lack thereof), requires a holistic approach. It’s about more than just marketing funnels & sales strategies (though those are important, too!). It’s about cultivating an unwavering mindset, prioritizing your wellbeing (because, seriously, mama needs her sleep!), & implementing smart, AI-powered systems that give you back your precious time & energy. This resonates deeply with creating systems & a mindset that allow your business to flow seamlessly with your life. Remember, much like when Alana finally learned to ride her bike, breakthroughs often come when we’re having fun, not when we’re forcing it. Persistence is key, though - you keep going even when it feels hard! Defining your path starts with being crystal clear about what you want & taking consistent, small steps to achieve it. Feeling lost or overwhelmed about how to do this? Grab a seat in my free Masterclass on "Defining Your Entrepreneurial Path" where I share a simple 3-step system for building the business & life you crave – all whilst managing the everyday juggle. Here’s a simple 3-step system to get you started: Mindset Mastery: What's one limiting belief you can reframe today? If you catch yourself thinking, "I'm not experienced enough", try shifting it to "I have a unique perspective to offer." Remember, much like my journey from selling sweets in the playground to founding Femmeprenista, it's about progress, not perfection. System Saviour: Implement one time-saving system this week. Could you automate your email welcome sequence, schedule your social media posts in advance, or use a project management tool to organize your tasks? Remember how crucial it was for me to establish clear client-facing boundaries, especially with the chaos of four kids and two energetic Miniature Pinschers? Systems bring sanity to the juggle. Strategic Action: Define one clear, measurable goal for the week & break it down into three smaller tasks. Focus on things that move the needle for your business. It’s not about doing more, but about doing the right things. Even if it feels like you're moving at a tortoise's pace, consistent action is key! Connecting with women who are navigating similar challenges, celebrating each other’s wins (and commiserating over the epic fails), is essential for staying sane & fuelled on this journey. It’s about creating a tribe, a support network that reminds you that you’re not alone. Remember, "It's not just down to the system, what can you do?" You're a big deal, remember? What’s one thing you’re struggling with right now? Share in the comments – let’s support each other! Ready to Define Your Path? So, my love, what's your next step? - Transition to Entrepreneur: Secure Your Standard Living
Ditch the Leap of Faith: Transition to Entrepreneur Without Sacrificing Your Standard of Living, Darling! Right, let's have a real chat, shall we? How many times have you heard the advice "leap & the net will appear"? Sounds exciting, doesn’t it? Like something out of a motivational poster. But honestly, for most of us, especially mums juggling a million things (like, is that mashed banana on the ceiling?!), leaping before you look is a recipe for a serious face-plant, not a graceful landing. See, I’ve been there. Remember my story about the E-Factor competition at university? It was meant to be this amazing launchpad, a 'now or never' moment for my co-founder & me, fresh out of uni, and me a new mum. I was so excited, buzzing with this "this is it" energy, completely convinced this was our big break. Turns out, "all in" meant very different things to us – she needed the stability of a job, while I was itching to go full throttle, fueled by that naive, just-graduated optimism. Definitely felt more like a belly flop into a paddling pool without water, let's be honest! I remember feeling so deflated, like all that excitement had just whooshed out, leaving me wondering if I was even cut out for this whole business thing. Those early ventures taught me so much about the difference between blind leaps & strategic steps, between scrambling & building a sustainable business that actually supports the life you want . I vividly remember thinking, "If we're going to do this, we need to DO this, not tiptoe around it." That experience, though tough, was invaluable. This post is for the woman who craves more. More flexibility, more fulfillment, more control over her income & her time. More impact. More life . It’s for the woman who’s tired of being a replaceable cog in someone else’s machine & dreams of building her own empire but is smart enough to know she needs a solid plan. Because leaving your job doesn't have to mean a drop in income, darling. In fact, with the right strategy, it can be a pathway to much, much more. More freedom, more financial security, & a whole lot more joy. This isn't about settling; it's about strategically upgrading your entire life. Truth be told, when I first started trying to map out my escape from the corporate world – pre-MBA, pre-PhD, pre-kids number three and four – I massively underestimated my actual expenses. There were months where I was staring at my bank balance thinking, “Okay, how on earth am I going to make this work?”. It wasn’t pretty – let’s just say there were a few frantic “how am I going to cover this?” moments before I finally nailed the process I'm sharing with you here. From Paycheck to Profits: Calculating Your True Needs (Let's Get Real!) Let's ditch the vague aspirations & get down to brass tacks. Before you even think about handing in your notice, you need crystal-clear clarity on your financial needs. & I don't just mean a rough estimate; I mean a precise, down-to-the-penny understanding of what it takes to maintain your current standard of living. Remember my MBA days? All those late nights poring over finance models while juggling a toddler? Turns out, those principles are pretty darn useful in real life too! So, grab a cuppa (or a glass of wine; it’s always wine o'clock somewhere!), a notebook, & let's do this: Track Your Spending: For a full month, track every single penny that leaves your account. Yes, even that cheeky latte. You need a complete picture of your spending habits. There are some brilliant apps for this, or even a good old spreadsheet will do the trick. Categorize & Analyze: Once you have the data, categorize your spending. Housing, food, childcare (because let’s be honest, that's a significant chunk for many of us!), transportation, those little treats you deserve... the lot. This is where you get to see where your money is actually going. Ever had one of those "wait, I spent how much on takeaways last month?!" moments? Yeah, me too. It’s really funny, because I used to be shocked, but not anymore. Factor in Future Goals: Dream of that family holiday you've always wanted? Planning to invest in your children's education? Factor these aspirations into your income goals. Financial freedom isn't just about covering the bills; it’s about creating the life you truly desire. Build a Buffer: Life throws curveballs. Unexpected expenses, a temporary dip in income... it happens. Build a financial cushion into your calculations to navigate these bumps without derailing your entrepreneurial dreams. Building a Business that Pays the Bills (and Then Some!) Now that you know your magic number, it’s time to build a venture that not only meets those needs but exceeds them. This is where we move beyond survival & into thriving. Niche Clarity is Queen: Who are you serving? What problem are you solving? The more specific you are, the more powerful your marketing will be. Remember what Rory Sutherland says: value is created in the mind, not just in the factory. He challenges us to think about what our offer means to our customers, not just what it is . This is about tapping into their deepest desires and anxieties, understanding their “why” on a psychological level. This isn't just about selling a product; it's about crafting an experience, a feeling, a transformation. For example, think about Uber – they didn’t just create a faster taxi service; they created a way to reduce the anxiety of waiting by showing you exactly where your car is on a map. That's the power of understanding the psychology of your customer! If you’re trying to be everything to everyone, you’ll end up being nothing to no one. Feeling lost in the fog? Our Spark Programme helps Foundation Builders like you gain clarity on their niche and build a strong business foundation. Spark Program Page Irresistible Offers: What transformation are you offering? How is it different, better, more aligned with your ideal client’s needs & desires? This is where we draw inspiration from Sabri Suby’s High-Value Content Offers (HVCO). Suby's not just about throwing any freebie out there; it's about creating something so valuable, so targeted, that it positions you as the expert and makes your paid offer the obvious next step. Think "lead magnet" with a serious dose of strategy. He talks about "entering the conversation already taking place in the customer's mind." That means understanding their deepest fears, their secret hopes, their late-night Google searches. What keeps them up at night? What are they desperately trying to solve? Answer those questions with your HVCO, and you'll have their attention. Give your audience something truly valuable, something that speaks directly to their deepest desires and most pressing pain points. Think about those late-night worries they have, the questions they're Googling at 2 AM. What can you offer that provides genuine solutions and makes them feel seen and understood? Systems for Success: This is where my love for systems comes in. Efficient processes, smart automation (yes, AI is your friend! Think Fusion – using AI practically to automate tasks, analyze data, and personalize your client interactions, making you more efficient, not just more "techy"), & streamlined workflows are non-negotiable for scaling without burning out. A simple system can be as basic as automating your email sequences or using a scheduling tool to manage client appointments. More advanced systems might involve integrating AI for data analysis or content creation. The key is to start small, build consistently, and always ask, "How can I make this easier, smoother, more automated?". Imagine having a business that runs smoothly, even when you’re taking that well-deserved family holiday, or – in my case – chasing a toddler while recovering from a C-section and working on my PhD. Sounds dreamy, doesn't it? Believe me, having robust systems in place makes all the difference. Mindset Mastery: Building a successful venture is an inside job. Imposter syndrome, fear of visibility, pricing anxiety... we all face these demons. But you can overcome them. This is where the power of "Identity Alchemy" comes in, darling. This concept, inspired by the work of Adrienne Weimer, is about acknowledging that to achieve your biggest goals, you often need to become a different version of yourself – shedding old limiting beliefs, stepping into your power, and embracing who you need to be to lead your business and life with confidence. It's not just about positive thinking; it's about deep inner work. For instance, one powerful exercise is to visualize your future self, the successful entrepreneur you're becoming. What does she do? How does she think? How does she feel? Spend a few minutes each day embodying that future version of you, and you'll be amazed at the shift it creates. Another helpful technique is journaling prompts. Start with: “What's one limiting belief that's holding me back in my business right now?”. Once you identify it, rephrase it into a powerful, empowering statement. It's about shifting who you believe you are to match the entrepreneur you're becoming. Who do you need to become to create the business & the life you truly desire? It's a journey of continuous growth, but so worth it. For me, a big part of that was realizing that "hard work beats intelligence when it's smart work," and building a system that actually works for my life. The Transition: A Phased Approach for Peace of Mind Ready to ditch the corporate shackles? Here's a 3-step checklist to make the transition smoothly & responsibly: Moonlight Magic (The Side Hustle): Start building your venture before leaving your 9-to-5. Think of it as your secret weapon. This lets you validate your ideas, gain traction, and start building a client base without the financial pressure of relying solely on your new venture. Imagine this: you're building your email list, creating your first offers, and even securing a few clients while still receiving that steady paycheck. It’s all about mitigating risk, darling! Replace, Don't Leap: Aim to replace your current income with consistent venture revenue before handing in your notice. Don't just leap and hope for the best; build a solid financial foundation. Once your venture income consistently matches (or ideally exceeds) your current salary for a few months, you'll know you're ready to make the move with confidence. I remember one particularly stressful month trying to figure this out, juggling spreadsheets, childcare costs, and a sudden vet bill for Espresso (our crazy Miniature Pinscher puppy). I felt so overwhelmed, wondering if I was ever going to crack the code. This is about creating genuine security and stepping into your entrepreneurial journey from a place of strength, not scarcity. Strategic Scaling (Reinvest & Reign): As your venture grows, resist the urge to splurge on everything at once. Instead, think strategic reinvestment . Pouring profits back into your business—whether it's upgrading your systems, investing in a high-level coach (like our Momentum 1:1 Coaching for Scaling Leaders, once you're ready for that stage!), or hiring a VA to free up your time for more strategic work—is a powerful way to accelerate your growth and build a truly sustainable & scalable enterprise. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Or, as I like to think of it, my journey is more like the tortoise than the hare with four kids & a PhD, but as long as I'm moving forward with purpose & smart action, I'll get there. Think long-term growth, not short-term gains. A great example of this is GoPro, which reinvested early profits strategically into product development & marketing, fueling its explosive growth. You've Got This (Seriously, You Do!) Building a successful business while juggling all the other demands of life is not easy. But it is absolutely possible. & it's so incredibly rewarding. It’s about taking ownership of your journey, making smart decisions, & creating a life aligned with your values & aspirations. So, ditch the leap of faith & embrace the power of a solid plan. - Working From Home With Kids? Embrace the Chaos | Femmeprenista
When Your Home Office Becomes a Comedy Show: The Tech-Fueled Chaos of Working From Home with Your Partner (and Kids!) Okay, let’s be honest, the dream of working from home – latte in hand, perfect peace, business flourishing… yeah, it can look a little different in reality, can’t it? Especially when your partner also works from home, and there are small humans and furry friends adding their own unique brand of “artistic expression” to the mix. Anyone else ever tried to have a serious business discussion while Peppa Pig is blaring in the background, only to be interrupted by the puppy deciding your laptop cable is a chew toy? Just me? Didn't think so! The other day, my husband – bless his personal workaholic – and I were trying to have a "quick" Zoom meeting with a potential collaborator. We’d finally wrangled the toddler into her playpen, complete with her favorite stuffed giraffe and a sippy cup of apple juice (bribery, don’t judge!), the baby was miraculously napping, and even the dogs seemed to have entered a temporary state of zen. We were so close. Then, mid-sentence, as I’m eloquently describing our innovative marketing strategy (drawing on all that wisdom from my MBA, no less!), a small, sticky hand reaches over my shoulder and SLAMS the laptop shut. The screen goes black. The meeting vanishes. And there, peeking over the edge of the playpen with a mischievous grin, is my two-year-old, wielding a half-eaten banana. 🍌 Cue the internal scream, quickly followed by the forced-calm "I'll be right back" to our very confused collaborator. As I wrestled the banana (and the toddler) into submission, my husband (who was trying to contain his laughter, the traitor!) rebooted the laptop. By the time we were back online, my carefully applied lipstick was smudged, & I'm pretty sure I had banana puree on my shoulder. Professionalism personified, right? 😂 Even now, I still sometimes find myself hiding in the pantry to take important calls! See, this, my friends, is the beautiful chaos of working from home with a partner & kids. It's a constant juggling act, a tech-comedy show written & directed by tiny humans (and furry accomplices), with technology playing a starring, sometimes villainous role. & you know what? I wouldn't trade it for the world. There was a time, though, when the overwhelm felt crushing, like I was drowning in a sea of Dora episodes and unread emails, before I realized that systems, not superheroes, were the real answer. But, & this is a big but, it’s also taught me the critical importance of systems, boundaries, & – perhaps most importantly – a healthy dose of humor. Because let’s face it, when your home office doubles as a nursery, a dog creche, & your partner’s impromptu podcast studio, you have two choices: laugh or cry. I choose laughter (most days, anyway!). Seriously though, working from home, especially when your partner shares the office space, can be a game-changer. It can offer the flexibility you need as a mum, the chance to connect with your partner on a deeper level, & the autonomy to build a business & life that truly fits you. But the integration isn’t always seamless. It often requires a more holistic approach. It’s achievable though, especially when you prioritize the quality of your life & building a business that energizes rather than drains you. A recent study from FlexJobs (2023) showed that 63% of remote workers reported higher job satisfaction – proof that with the right approach, working from home can be a win-win. Flexjobs State of Remote Work 2023 If you are a Scaling Leader, juggling a growing business & family life, this probably resonates with you – the constant balancing act, the tech chaos, the quest for work-life integration. Remember the importance of implementing efficient systems. Perhaps leveraging smart AI tools to truly streamline your processes, & delegate or ditch what’s not serving you. You know, like having a really robust system, a schedule, right? You only get what you negotiate for in this life! & let's be honest, if a toddler can throw a wrench (or banana) in the best-laid plans, it’s all the more reason to have a strong foundation. We all need a system to support us. Here's your mini-checklist for conquering the chaos: Juggler’s Shortcut: Create a shared online calendar (like Google Calendar) & sync it with everyone’s devices. This avoids double-bookings & the dreaded "wait, who was picking up the kids?" scramble. System Savior: Implement a project management tool (like Trello or Asana) to keep track of your tasks, deadlines, & collaborations. Quick Clarity Tip: Schedule weekly “business strategy” meetings with your partner, even for just 30 minutes, to align on priorities & address challenges (kid-free zone, essential!). What's your “caster oil on the carpet” moment? Share one of your "home office comedy show" moments below! We're in this together. - Communicate Brand Value Women: Own Your Expertise!
Own Your Expertise: How to Confidently Communicate Your Brand Value Right, let’s talk about something that can feel a bit icky for many of us, especially as women: self-promotion. It’s that squirmy feeling you get when you have to talk about how brilliant you are, how much value you bring, & why people should invest in your amazing services or products. I get it, believe me, I really get it. It can feel like shouting into a void, or worse, like bragging. I’ve been there, hunched over my laptop, cursor blinking, trying to craft a caption that didn't make me sound like I was blowing my own trumpet. Honestly, who actually enjoys that? In the early days of Femmeprenista, I was terrified of putting myself out there. I remember launching my first online course & feeling like I was exposing myself to a firing squad of critics. Every notification made me jump, convinced it was a negative review. It was exhausting & utterly unsustainable. Sound familiar? Thought so. But what if I told you that promoting your brand isn't just about you? What if it's actually an act of service to the people who need your unique gifts? Imagine you’ve got the key to unlock someone’s potential, the solution to their burning problem, the magic touch that can transform their lives – are you doing them a favour by keeping it a secret? What I learned from that early, shaky launch was that by dimming my own light, I wasn't just holding myself back; I was potentially holding back the very women who could have thrived with the support Femmeprenista offers. It's like having the answer to someone's prayer & keeping it locked in a drawer. I learned this lesson the hard way. Suffice to say, it instilled in me the importance of finding my voice & using it. But even with that instilled fire, I still wrestled with the fear of self-promotion for years . I’d see other entrepreneurs, seemingly effortlessly sharing their wins, landing amazing clients, & I’d think, “How do they do it?” The secret, I realized, wasn't some magic formula. It was a mindset shift. It was understanding that by confidently communicating my value, I wasn't just building my business; I was empowering the women who needed what Femmeprenista had to offer. Reframing Self-Promotion as an Act of Service So, how do we move past the icky feeling & confidently own our expertise? Let’s break it down, shall we? First, let's unpack the "why" behind self-promotion, taking a cue from Simon Sinek. Ask yourself, why does your brand exist ? What problem are you solving? Who are you serving? Getting clear on your purpose makes it much easier to talk about your work, because it’s not about you anymore; it's about the impact you’re making. This brings to mind one of my favourite quotes from Simon Sinek: "People don't buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it." Next, think about who you are trying to reach. As Sabri Suby would say, "enter the conversation already taking place in the customer's mind". What are their pains? What are their dreams? What are they secretly Googling at 2am? When you truly understand your ideal client, your messaging becomes laser-focused, & self-promotion transforms into a genuine offering of help. Crafting Your Compelling Message (& Your Killer Elevator Pitch) If you’re a Foundation Builder entrepreneur, just starting out, let’s get practical. How do you actually do this? Here are some actionable tips, sprinkled with a little bit of wisdom, honestly. Know Your Value: What makes you different? What specific problem do you solve better than anyone else? Don’t be shy about highlighting your unique strengths & experiences. Your journey, with all its twists & turns, has shaped you into the expert you are today. Own it! To help you get crystal clear on this, grab a pen and paper (or open a new doc – whatever works for you!) & answer these questions: What are you uniquely good at? What comes naturally to you that others struggle with? What are your biggest accomplishments (personal or professional)? What did you learn from them? What are you most passionate about sharing with the world? What lights you up? Your answers to these questions will form the foundation of your brand's unique value proposition. It’s your secret sauce! Clarity Over Cleverness: Sometimes, I get caught up in trying to be clever or witty in my messaging. It can backfire! As Rory Sutherland, the master of marketing psychology, reminds us, “Clarity over cleverness.” Focus on communicating your value simply & directly. Avoid jargon. Remember, effective communication is about making sure people get your message, not showcasing your extensive vocabulary. The Elevator Pitch Perfect: Imagine you're trapped in a lift with your dream client (hopefully, it's a more pleasant experience than when my toddler daughter decided to use the dog's water bowl as her personal bath – pets & kids, eh? You know the drill!). You have 30 seconds. What do you say? Your elevator pitch should concisely communicate who you are, what you do, & who you serve. Practice it until it feels natural. Storytelling is Key: "Stories are the PDF files of human information," says Rory Sutherland. Weave your personal experiences, client successes (anonymized, of course!), & the "why" behind your brand into your messaging. People connect with stories. They make you relatable, memorable, & trustworthy. Remember my “dogs in a crate” story? It paints a picture of the struggle many mothers face, making the message about Work-Life Integration for Mums: Ditch the Myth & Flourish! so much more powerful. Online & Offline Consistency: Your message should be consistent across all platforms – your website, social media, networking events, even your email signature. For example, ensure your profile picture is the same across LinkedIn, Instagram, & Facebook. Use your brand colours consistently in your visuals & website design. Finally, don’t be afraid to use your elevator pitch when networking in person. Overcoming the Fear & Stepping into Your Power Okay, so you've got your message, you understand the "why", & you've even practiced your elevator pitch in front of the mirror (don't worry, we all do it). But that pesky fear is still lingering, right? It's normal. Trust me, as someone juggling multiple businesses, a PhD, & the joys of motherhood (anyone else ever tried to record a podcast while their six-year-old practices the recorder? Just me? Okay then!), I understand the fear. So, how do we tackle it? Reframe Your Thinking: What if, instead of seeing self-promotion as bragging, you saw it as sharing a gift? When you are confident in your value, sharing it becomes an act of generosity, not ego. Start Small: You don’t have to become a social media megastar overnight. Share one win this week. Beyond the Scroll: Diversifying Your Marketing for Sustainable Growth Ever feel like social media is a bit like our energetic puppy, Espresso , bouncing off the walls – full of potential but also a bit unpredictable? You pour your heart and soul into creating engaging content, hoping for a predictable stream of clients , but it can feel like chasing shadows sometimes, right? You're not alone. In fact, a recent study ( insert link to study here ) showed that 63% of female entrepreneurs report feeling overwhelmed and burnt out by the pressure of social media marketing. While social media definitely has its place (and we all love a good Instagram reel!), what if I told you there's a calmer, more strategic way to attract your ideal clients and build a business that thrives, no matter what algorithm changes Zuckerberg throws our way? Why Putting All Your Eggs in the Social Media Basket Can Be Risky Remember that time my school-aged daughter decided to conduct a "science experiment" involving all the glitter in the house, five minutes before a crucial client call? Honestly, glitter and professionalism don't exactly mix! And I had glitter everywhere , even in my coffee the next morning! Relying solely on social media can feel a bit like that – one minute everything's sparkling, the next you're cleaning up a chaotic mess. Algorithms change, platforms evolve, and your reach can vanish overnight through no fault of your own. Building your entire business on someone else's platform is a bit like building a house on sand – beautiful until the tide comes in. And let’s be honest, the constant pressure to create, engage, and keep up can be exhausting, can't it? It’s a recipe for burnout, especially when you’re already juggling family, personal life, and the never-ending to-do list. What if, instead of constantly reacting to the latest trend or algorithm tweak, you had a solid, multi-faceted marketing strategy that brought clients to YOU? As I often ask myself, "How can I work smarter, not just harder, to achieve my goals?" This is about sustainable growth, not just fleeting visibility. Building a Marketing Ecosystem: Your Garden of Growth Imagine a beautiful, thriving garden. You wouldn't just plant one type of flower & hope for the best, would you? A marketing ecosystem is similar. It’s about cultivating a diverse range of marketing activities, just like a garden with different plants blooming at different times. This ensures a constant flow of leads and clients, rather than relying on a single source. Practical Steps to Diversify Your Marketing (Even if You're Short on Time) If you're a Foundation Builder, just starting out, these tips are especially for you! I know what you’re thinking: "This all sounds great, Carlene , but I barely have time to brush my teeth in the morning, let alone build a complex marketing strategy!" I get it. My journey is slower, I have four kids, I'm doing a PhD, and I'm recovering from my fourth C-section. When my youngest was just a few months old, even finding time to write a simple email felt like climbing Mount Everest ! I remember trying to draft a welcome sequence for my Spark program while simultaneously bouncing the baby on my knee and trying to stop the toddler from using Cappuccino as a climbing frame. It was pure chaos. I eventually found my rhythm by implementing strict time blocking (and accepting that some days, "done" is better than "perfect" ), but those early days were a blur. So I’m all about smart, efficient strategies that fit into the real lives of busy female entrepreneurs. Here are a few actionable steps you can take: Email Marketing: Nurture Your Tribe: Building an email list is like creating your own VIP guest list. You’re inviting people into your inner circle. Email Marketing: Control the Conversation: Share valuable content & build deeper relationships without relying on algorithms. Email Marketing: Offer Your Services Directly: Connect with your audience directly and offer your services without the noise of social media. Content Marketing: Share Your Brilliance: Create valuable content. This could be blog posts (like this one!), videos, or podcasts. Content Marketing: Position Yourself as an Expert: Consistently providing valuable content helps you become the go-to authority in your field. Content Marketing: Attract Ideal Clients Organically: When you offer real solutions, clients will naturally seek you out. Collaboration: The Power of Partnership: Partnering with other businesses expands your reach. Consider joint ventures or cross-promotions. Collaboration: Tap Into New Audiences: Reach new audiences through collaborations with businesses that serve a similar clientele. Collaboration: Create Win-Win Opportunities: Work with others to create mutually beneficial marketing opportunities. Local Networking (Yes, in the Real World!): Attending local networking events or joining business groups can lead to connections. Don't underestimate the power of real-world interactions. Local Networking: Connect with Your Community: Build relationships with other businesses and potential clients in your local area. Local Networking: Discover Unexpected Opportunities: You never know what opportunities might arise from face-to-face networking. Harness the Power of AI: Integrating AI into your marketing strategy can be your secret weapon. Use AI tools to automate repetitive tasks, personalize messages, & gain insights. AI for Automation: Schedule your social media posts using a tool like Buffer or Hootsuite. For example, you can batch create your social media content for the week and then schedule it all at once using Buffer, freeing up your time for other tasks. AI for Personalization: Use an AI email marketing platform like Mailchimp or ConvertKit to segment your audience and send targeted messages. For instance, ConvertKit can help you tag subscribers based on their interests so you can send highly relevant emails that resonate with each segment. AI for Insights: Explore AI analytics tools like Google Analytics. For example, Google Analytics can show you which blog posts are most popular, where your website traffic is coming from, and what demographics are most engaged with your content. Use this data to refine your strategy and create even more effective content. From Overwhelm to Empowerment: Shifting Your Mindset I know implementing these strategies might feel overwhelming at first. Trust me, I've been there! When I was starting out, juggling a newborn, university, and my first venture, Nisbett & George (which I co-founded during university after entering the E-Factor competition in my final year at UEL – talk about timing!), it felt like I was constantly putting out fires. One particularly memorable "fire" was trying to get our first website up and running. Neither of us were tech-savvy, and I remember spending hours trying to figure out how to connect our email marketing platform to our website. I felt completely overwhelmed & like a total imposter. It was only when I decided to invest in a short course on website integration that things finally clicked. It was a small investment, but it saved me so much time and frustration in the long run. Truth be told, I almost gave up on the idea of diversifying my marketing completely when I first started Femmeprenista. The thought of adding " one more thing " to my already overflowing plate felt paralyzing. As the saying goes, "If it was easy, everyone would do it." Honestly, it's not always easy to break free from those old patterns, but it is possible. It's okay to feel like you're the tortoise in a race full of hares sometimes! And that's okay – as long as you keep moving. The key is to take it one step at a time, celebrate your small wins, and remember that you are capable of creating the business and life you truly desire. If you find yourself asking disempowering questions, you cannot find empowering answers. What are the questions you're asking yourself? What if you shifted that question to focus on your potential? Start by believing you can do this! Shift your focus from the impossible mountain you’re facing to the first small step you can take today. What's one action you can take this week to diversify your marketing? Share it below – let's support each other on this journey! Ready to Build a Flourishing Business? - The Business Flourish Framework Female: Thrive in Business
Flourishing, Not Just Functioning: The Femmeprenista Business Flourish Framework™ for Thriving Hey lovely ladies, Carlene here! Let's have a real chat about building an online business that doesn’t just survive but thrives alongside your life. Especially if, like me, you're navigating the beautiful chaos of motherhood. It’s one thing to dream of escaping the 9-to-5 & building something that's truly yours, it's quite another to actually make it happen when you're trying to manage a business, a family, and, let’s be honest, just keeping tiny humans alive & relatively clean. My PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship constantly reminds me how many women are juggling these exact same demands. It’s not easy, but it is possible to create a business that works for you, not the other way around. I've seen firsthand, both in my research & with the amazing women in our Femmeprenista community, how transformative this shift can be. So many entrepreneurs have doubled, even tripled, their income using this framework – all while reclaiming their time & sanity. You’ve probably heard the saying "work smarter, not harder," but honestly, how many times have you actually seen that translate into real, actionable strategies, particularly ones designed for the unique realities of women entrepreneurs? I mean, generic advice is fine, but it's like trying to squeeze into a dress that's two sizes too small – uncomfortable & a definite no-no. That's why I created the Femmeprenista Business Flourish Framework™. It’s a holistic blueprint specifically designed to help ambitious women, especially those in the early stages of their online business journey – our "Foundation Builders" – build not just businesses, but lives , that truly flourish. And yes, it absolutely takes into account the Paw Patrol theme song on repeat, the occasional toddler tantrum (though, trust me, client-facing stuff happens when they're occupied elsewhere – I’d never dream of doing a client call with the kids running around! My youngest has a radar for precisely when I need quiet, and suddenly it’s like a miniature zoo has broken loose in the house!), and the ever-present juggle of the mental load. Remember that time my two-year-old decided my brand new, bright pink lipstick was the perfect tool for redecorating the living room wall right before a Zoom call? Yeah, we've all been there. It’s about creating a business that not only supports your family financially but also aligns with the beautiful chaos of your actual life. Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose The Five Pillars of the Femmeprenista Business Flourish Framework™ for Female Entrepreneurs This Framework isn't about ticking boxes; it's about weaving together different aspects of your business & life to create something truly sustainable and fulfilling. It’s like creating a stunning tapestry—each thread (or pillar) adds depth, colour, & resilience. Focus: Mindset Mastery for the Modern Entrepreneur: This is about cultivating unshakeable confidence & ditching that nagging self-doubt. Taking ownership of your journey, even when it’s messy, is key. Mindset is your inner powerhouse – your ability to navigate the beautiful chaos (and yes, the occasional meltdown – both yours & the kids’!) with grace & humour. Like Roxie Nafousi says, "Energy doesn’t lie. Trust the vibes you get." Flair: Authentic Marketing That Attracts Your Dream Clients: This is where you define your brand voice – your unique sparkle – & craft compelling messages that speak directly to the heart of your ideal clients. It's about getting visible without feeling like you’re shouting into the void, because you know you have something truly valuable to offer. As marketing genius Rory Sutherland puts it, "We don't value things; we value their meaning. Make your product mean something valuable." Flow: Streamlined Systems & Momentum for Maximum Impact: Ever feel like you’re constantly putting out fires, juggling a million tasks, & never quite getting ahead? 'Flow' is your antidote. This is about creating smooth, efficient systems, so you can reclaim your precious time & energy. It's about streamlined processes, smart automation, and delegating (or ditching altogether!) tasks that drain you. Fuel: Prioritizing Your Well-being for Sustainable Success: As female entrepreneurs & mothers, we often put ourselves last. But we can't pour from an empty cup, right? 'Fuel' is about putting you back on the priority list. This means prioritizing your physical & mental health, protecting your energy levels, & nurturing your overall well-being. Building a thriving business requires you to be firing on all cylinders, not running on fumes. Remember Lisa Nichols’ wisdom: "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others… from your saucer." Fusion: AI Integration for the Smart Entrepreneur: This is where we bring in the magic of technology! 'Fusion' is about leveraging the power of AI to enhance every aspect of your business. From streamlining marketing & automating tedious tasks to gaining powerful data-driven insights, AI is essentially your super-efficient virtual assistant. Building a Flourishing Business for Female Entrepreneurs: It’s All Connected The true magic of the Business Flourish Framework™ lies in the synergy of these pillars. A rock-solid mindset (Focus) empowers you to define your unique brand voice (Flair) & implement smart systems (Flow) that free up your time so you can actually prioritize your well-being (Fuel) without guilt. Integrate AI (Fusion), & you’re not just surviving, you’re thriving ! Business coaching for women is all about this kind of holistic growth. Struggling to attract high-paying clients? Maybe your marketing feels scattered, or you're hitting an income ceiling despite working harder than ever? The Framework helps you diagnose the root cause: Is it a mindset block (Focus), unclear messaging (Flair), inefficient lead nurturing (Flow), or neglecting your own well-being (Fuel)? Addressing these issues holistically builds a stronger, more resilient business & a more fulfilling life. Practical Examples in Action (Business Coaching Tips for Women) How does this translate into your daily life as a busy female entrepreneur? Let's look at some business coaching tips for women: Overwhelm getting the better of you? Focus & Flow to the rescue! 1. Implement a simple project management system (Trello, Asana). 2. Leverage AI for scheduling & automating client communications. 3. Dedicate weekly planning time, prioritizing those high-impact activities that actually move the needle. And don’t forget to sprinkle in some mindful moments throughout your day, even if it's just five minutes of deep breathing with the kids (or hiding in the bathroom – I’ve been there!). Feeling invisible online? Time to unleash your Flair! 1. Define your unique brand voice. What makes you different? What's your story? 2. Craft compelling content addressing your ideal client's deepest pain points. What keeps her up at night? What are her secret hopes & dreams? 3. Get visible on the platforms where she hangs out (Instagram, LinkedIn, podcasts, Facebook groups). Remember, if you’re not showing up where your dream clients are, they'll never find you! Running on empty – physically, mentally, emotionally? Time to Fuel up! 1. Schedule regular breaks throughout your day – even 15 minutes to step away can make a world of difference. 2. Prioritize sleep. I know, easier said than done with little ones, but even small tweaks to your sleep routine can have a massive impact on your energy. 3. Incorporate movement into your day – a quick walk, a yoga session, or even a spontaneous dance party with the kids (my toddler loves this!). Drowning in tech & feeling totally overwhelmed? Fusion to the rescue! AI isn't just for the tech-savvy; it's for you ! 1. Explore AI tools for social media scheduling (e.g., Buffer, Hootsuite). 2. Automate your email marketing (e.g., Mailchimp, ConvertKit). 3. Consider AI-powered customer support (e.g., chatbots) to handle those frequently asked questions. It’s all about working smarter, not harder, lovely ladies! How We Work / Business Flourish Framework Ready to Flourish? As Simone Biles says, “I’m the first Simone Biles.” Build a business—& a life—that reflects your values & empowers you to be the unique, brilliant woman you are. Business coaching for female entrepreneurs helps you do just that. I used to burn myself out constantly, thinking I had to do everything myself, from writing social media posts to handling every single aspect of client onboarding. I remember one particularly overwhelming week when I was juggling client deadlines, a teething baby, & a school project for my eldest, all while trying to finish a chapter of my PhD thesis. I felt like I was drowning in to-do lists & about to lose my mind. It wasn’t until I truly leaned into the 'Flow' pillar & started building systems, even small ones like automating my email responses & scheduling social media posts in advance, that things began to shift. Seriously, it was a game changer, especially when I began incorporating AI tools into those systems. There are so many amazing apps & platforms out there that can take the tech overwhelm out of running a business and free up your time & energy for what truly matters. - PhD Motherhood Entrepreneurship Survival: A Guide for Ambitious Women
Taming the PhD & Motherhood Beast: A Survival Guide for the Ambitious Entrepreneur Right, let's be honest. Juggling a PhD, motherhood, & running a business? It can feel like you're wrestling an octopus wearing oven mitts – lots of flailing, minimal control, & a high probability of getting inked. If you're a Foundation Builder managing a growing business alongside your studies, this one's for you. Trust me, I get it. Honestly, I'm right there with you, navigating my own PhD journey, wrangling four kids (plus two miniature pinchers who think they're kids too – Espresso especially!), & steering Femmeprenista. Just last week, I was trying to finalize a presentation for my doctoral research, while simultaneously soothing a teething baby & preventing my toddler daughter from using our new rug as a canvas for her latest artistic masterpiece (turns out beetroot puree smells terrible after three days of being ground into the fibres!). It's a lot. It's beautifully chaotic. & it’s definitely doable. The key, my friend, isn't to magically sprout more arms (though tempting, I know!), but to work smarter , not just harder. It’s about a mindset shift. It’s about strategic systems. It’s about carving out pockets of brilliance amidst the everyday whirlwind & celebrating those small wins like you’ve just conquered Everest (because let’s face it, some days, you have). My own PhD & business journey has been anything but linear. I’ve had moments of profound self-doubt, questioning whether I was “smart enough” or “capable enough” to handle it all. There were times I felt like giving up, like when I had to rewrite an entire chapter of my dissertation after a major computer crash (backup systems are essential , people!). But those experiences, as challenging as they were, taught me the power of resilience, the importance of celebrating small victories, & the absolute necessity of working smart through strategic systems & AI – exactly what I'm sharing with you here. From Overwhelmed to Optimized: Reclaiming Your Time Time. The one thing we never seem to have enough of. Especially when you're adding an intellectual marathon like a PhD to the already demanding sprints of motherhood & entrepreneurship. I remember trying to read a complex research paper while my toddler decided my laptop keyboard was a delicious new snack – talk about a cognitive disconnect! Ever feel like you're trying to scale a business while a Paw Patrol marathon blares in the background? Or trying to prep for a client call whilst your little one is having a full-blown meltdown because you cut her sandwich into triangles instead of squares? Yep, relatable. But seriously, who hasn’t had their "deep work" session derailed by a sudden nappy explosion or a teenager’s existential crisis about their latest TikTok video not getting enough likes? PhD & motherhood, often without the traditional village support, means time is even more precious. Consider linking to research on challenges faced by women entrepreneurs This is where AI-powered systems become indispensable. What if you could automate your social media posts? What if you could create compelling marketing copy in minutes? What if you could even have an AI assistant manage your email inbox? All of these are possible with the right systems & tools. Fusion, the fifth pillar of our Business Flourish Framework, is all about integrating AI strategically to reclaim your time & energy. It’s about working smarter , not harder – a principle that has been absolutely crucial for me in navigating the demands of my PhD, business, and family life. It's about prioritizing, yes, but it's also about being realistic. You're not superhuman (though you're pretty darn close!). So, ditch the guilt & embrace imperfection. That dissertation deadline? Break it down. Baby steps. Those marketing emails? Schedule them. Systems are your saviour. & remember, even 15 minutes of focused work is a win when you’re fitting it in between feeding schedules & school runs. I’m a huge believer in systems, honestly, "It's the system that's going to help us," as I often say. Even now, I sometimes struggle to fully switch off from “work mode” when I’m spending time with my family – it’s a constant learning curve. Find your system saviour, too. The Power of "No" (and the Magic of Delegation) Ever feel like you're the Little Red Hen, constantly asking for help, only to hear crickets? It's frustrating, I know. & it's often the harsh reality of modern motherhood & PhD life. We don’t always have the village we need, so sometimes, we have to build our own. This is where the power of "no" comes in. Not the aggressive, door-slamming kind, but the gentle, boundary-setting kind. "No, I can't bake cupcakes for the school fair." "No, I can't take on another client right now." "No, I can’t attend every single playdate." It frees up space for your priorities – your PhD, your business, your sanity. Delegation is the next magic ingredient. Can your partner take on more household responsibilities? Can you afford a cleaner, even for a few hours a month? Can you leverage some smart AI tools to automate tasks in your business? All of these are part of working smarter , not just harder. Sometimes, even with careful planning, delegation falls apart – like last week when the babysitter cancelled last minute, throwing my entire work schedule into delightful chaos. Remember, asking for help (or investing in it) isn't a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of a strategic CEO. This has been so crucial for me. Realizing I couldn’t do everything myself, especially while navigating a PhD & four kids, was a major breakthrough. If traditional support is limited, explore budget-friendly options like bartering skills with fellow entrepreneurs – maybe you can trade marketing expertise for childcare hours? Also, consider tapping into the often-untapped resource of talented student interns eager for real-world experience. Embracing Imperfection: The Done is Better than Perfect Mantra Let’s face it, striving for perfection when you're juggling multiple demanding roles is a recipe for burnout (and probably a few meltdowns along the way). I’ve learned this the hard way. Honestly, I vividly recall trying to create the “perfect” Instagram Reel promoting our Launch Programme, showcasing some key client wins, while simultaneously breastfeeding the baby & trying to participate in a Zoom call for my PhD cohort – it was a comedy of errors, let’s just say. The baby kept grabbing the phone, the call kept dropping out, and the Reel ended up looking like a shaky, out-of-focus mess! My teenage daughter even offered to take over my account, bless her! So, here's the liberating truth: done is better than perfect. PhD & motherhood has certainly taught me that lesson! That slightly-less-polished blog post? Publish it. That imperfect pitch deck? Send it. That slightly messy house? Embrace it. Progress, not perfection, is the key. You're building a business and a life, not aiming for a Pinterest board. The Resilience Recharge: Fueling Your Fire This is where well-being comes in. It’s not a luxury; it’s a necessity. I mean, even the Duracell Bunny needs a recharge sometimes, right? Imagine trying to fuel a car on fumes – it's not going to get very far. You are the engine of your business, your family, your PhD journey. You need fuel. This is what the 'Fuel' pillar of our Business Flourish Framework is all about. It's about recognizing that you can't pour from an empty cup. Here's a quick, actionable checklist to help you prioritize your wellbeing & fuel your resilience: Schedule 15 minutes of 'me time' daily: This could be anything that recharges you – a quick meditation, a walk in nature, reading a few pages of a good book, listening to your favorite music, or simply enjoying a cup of tea in silence (a rare luxury for us mums!). Even small pockets of dedicated "me time" can make a big difference in your overall well-being. Identify your top 3 recharge activities: What truly fills your cup? Is it a hot bath? A yoga class? A phone call with a close friend? A creative hobby? Knowing your go-to recharge activities makes it easier to prioritize them when you're feeling depleted. Block out time for one major recharge activity weekly: This could be a longer yoga session, a massage, a date night with your partner, a weekend getaway, or anything that allows you to truly disconnect & rejuvenate. What recharges you? Make it a non-negotiable. It’s not selfish; it’s strategic self-preservation. As Lisa Nichols says, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer." It's like they say on the plane – put your own oxygen mask on first, then assist others. Celebrating the Wins (Big & Small) This journey is a marathon, not a sprint. There will be hurdles, there will be setbacks, there will be days when you feel like you’re one spilled sippy cup away from a complete meltdown. Recently, I had one of those days. I was up all night with a sick child, missed a crucial deadline for my PhD research, & then spilled coffee all over my laptop just before an important client call (talk about a trifecta of disaster!). It was a moment of profound self-doubt & frustration. But then, my school-aged daughter brought me a drawing she’d made, with a little note saying, “You’re the best mummy in the world.” That simple act of love & appreciation shifted my perspective entirely. It reminded me of my "why" & gave me the strength to keep going. But there will also be triumphs. There will be moments of clarity, breakthroughs in your research, successful client launches, & the profound satisfaction of watching your children grow. Celebrate them all. The small wins, the big wins, the messy-in-between wins. They are all milestones on this extraordinary path you’ve chosen. Remember, you are not just a PhD student, a mother, or an entrepreneur; you are a force of nature. PhD & motherhood has certainly taught me that lesson! You are resilience personified. You are an inspiration. This journey embodies what Roxie Nafousi believes: “Energy doesn’t lie. Trust the vibes you get.” Ready to build a flourishing business, one that works with your PhD & motherhood journey, not against it? - Personality Tests for Business Growth: Unlock Your Potential
Beyond the Buzzwords: Turning Your Personality Test Results into Real Business Gold Right, let’s have a really honest chat, shall we? You’ve done the personality assessment. Maybe it was DISC, perhaps StrengthsFinder, or you’ve delved into your Myers-Briggs type. You got the report, read it with a cuppa (probably interrupted five times if your house is anything like mine!), and thought, “Wow, that’s so me!” And then… what happened? If you’re like many of the brilliant female entrepreneurs I meet, that insightful report, full of potential gold, might now be gathering digital dust in a folder somewhere on your computer. Or perhaps it’s printed out, looking rather important in a binder, but not actually doing doing much. Sound familiar? Thought so! You’re certainly not alone! It’s a common tale – the initial excitement of self-discovery fades, & we get pulled back into the daily whirlwind of running a business & for many of us, juggling family life too. I remember getting my own DISC results back just as my toddler daughter decided my laptop was a new & fascinating drum kit – specifically, a bright pink toy one with flashing lights & questionable sound effects! Those profound insights nearly got lost in the beautiful chaos! But here’s the thing, lovely: those assessments are more than just interesting. They’re not meant to be a one-off read. They are powerful tools, but their real magic isn’t in the report itself; it’s in what you do with it. The true power lies in taking personal responsibility to translate those insights into tangible actions that shape your business for the better. The "Aha!" Moment is Just the Appetiser, Not the Main Course Getting those results can feel like a real "aha!" moment, can’t it? Suddenly, certain patterns in how you work, communicate, or make decisions make so much more sense. It’s validating. It’s enlightening. And that self-awareness is absolutely fundamental. In fact, it’s a cornerstone of how we approach business growth here at Femmeprenista, really dialling into that deep understanding of yourself & your vision. If you’re keen to explore how this foundational self-awareness connects to your broader purpose, you might find our thoughts on About Page a good starting point. But that initial buzz, that feeling of "Oh, that explains everything !", is just the appetiser. The main course, the real nourishment for your business, comes when you consciously decide to apply what you’ve learned. It’s about moving from passive understanding to active, strategic implementation. I’ve seen it time & time again, both in my own journey & with my clients. A report sits untouched, a missed opportunity. Then, a shift happens. A decision is made to dig back in, to consciously look at how these innate preferences & strengths can be leveraged. And that’s when things really start to click. That’s when you stop trying to force yourself into a mould that doesn’t fit & start building a business that truly honours who you are. I’ll be honest, when I first did my StrengthsFinder, I learned "achiever" wasn't in my top 5. And I felt awful , because, well, aren't entrepreneurs supposed to be high achievers? It took me a while to realize that my strengths lay in other areas, & to build systems that played to those strengths instead! And you know what? I actually sat on that StrengthsFinder report for almost a year, feeling like a fraud, before I realised I was focusing on the wrong things! What a waste of time & energy! Unlocking Your Unique Business Blueprint: More Than Just Strengths & Weaknesses Think of these assessment results as part of the blueprint for your unique business. They reveal your natural talents, your preferred ways of communicating, how you best process information, your decision-making style, & yes, even those areas where you might naturally struggle or have blind spots. This isn’t about labelling yourself or putting yourself in a box. Far from it! It’s about liberation. It’s about understanding your own operational design so you can build a business that feels less like a struggle & more like a natural extension of who you are. It’s about creating a business that genuinely energises you, rather than drains you. This deep self-knowledge directly informs every aspect of your business, from how you show up in your marketing to how you structure your day, & even how you lead (yes, even if you’re a solopreneur, you’re leading!). It’s the foundation upon which you can build a truly authentic & sustainable enterprise. Understanding this core is so vital, it’s woven into our entire How We Work / Business Flourish Framework , helping you design a business that aligns with your innate way of being. From Insights to Impact: Putting Your Profile to Work So, how do we move from that interesting PDF to real-world results? Let’s get practical. Crafting Marketing That Truly Resonates Ever felt like your marketing messages are falling a bit flat, or like you’re trying to be someone you’re not? Your assessment insights can revolutionise this. Authentic Voice: Understanding your communication style (often highlighted in DISC, for example) helps you write copy, create videos, or engage on social media in a way that’s genuinely you . If you’re naturally direct & results-oriented, lean into that. If you’re more about connection & collaboration, let that shine. Your ideal clients will be drawn to that authenticity. Playing to Your Strengths: Knowing your innate talents (hello, StrengthsFinder!) means you can choose marketing activities you’ll not only be good at but might actually enjoy . Are you a natural storyteller? Focus on content that allows for that. Do you thrive on connection? Networking (online or offline) could be your superpower. When you’re operating in your strength zone, your marketing feels less like a chore & more like a joyful expression. Client Connection Case Study: One of my clients, Sarah, a coach for introverted women, discovered through DISC that she was high in "Steadiness" & "Conscientiousness." She realized her marketing felt forced because she was trying to emulate extroverted, high-energy sales tactics. When she embraced her natural calm & thoughtful style, her client conversions went up 30% within a month! I remember realising one of my key strengths was around strategy & seeing the bigger picture – suddenly, breaking down complex ideas for my audience in my content felt energising, not overwhelming. The result? You start attracting clients who connect with the real you, making those sales conversations feel much more natural & aligned. Designing Operations & Systems That Flow How you run the backend of your business can either be a source of constant friction or a well-oiled machine that supports your energy & efficiency. Workflow Wisdom: Understanding your natural work style helps you design processes that fit. For instance, if you’re highly analytical, you might create detailed, step-by-step systems. If you’re more intuitive & adaptable, your systems might be more flexible but still clear. Delegate or Ditch with Clarity: Those tasks that always end up at the bottom of your to-do list, the ones that drain your soul? They’re often the ones that fall outside your natural strengths. Your assessment results can give you permission to acknowledge this & find smarter solutions – perhaps it’s time to delegate them, leverage clever automation (AI can be a game-changer here for streamlining processes!), or even redesign the task altogether. Time Saved, Sanity Retained: The aim is to reduce resistance & make your daily operations smoother. This isn't about avoiding hard work; it's about working smart . The result? A business that supports your energy, frees up your time for what you do best, & generally runs with a lot more ease. Imagine that! Leading with Confidence & Clarity (Yes, Even as a Solopreneur!) Every entrepreneur is a leader – you’re leading your business, your vision, & eventually, perhaps a team. Authentic Leadership Style: Self-awareness helps you understand & embrace your natural leadership style. Are you a visionary motivator? A steady supporter? A decisive director? Owning this allows you to lead with more authenticity & impact. Stronger Decision-Making: When you’re clear on your strengths, values, & even your potential biases (which assessments can highlight), you make decisions with greater confidence & less second-guessing. For Scaling Leaders: If you’re at the stage of growing your team, these insights are absolute gold. Understanding your own profile & those of your team members can transform communication, delegation, & overall team cohesion. This is invaluable, especially when facing those inevitable entrepreneurial crossroads. It’s something we dive deep into within our Momentum Coaching Page , using tools like DISC to help established business owners lead & scale more effectively. The result? You show up as a more confident, decisive, & authentic leader in your business. "But Carlene, I Just Don't Have Time For This!" (And Other Hurdles) I hear you. The thought of another "deep dive" when your to-do list is already a mile long & the kids need picking up from school can feel overwhelming. Let’s tackle a few common thoughts: "I’m too busy for this." Believe me, as a mum of four running a business & pursuing a PhD, I get busy. But this isn’t about adding more to your plate; it’s about making what’s already on your plate work better for you. Investing a little time to understand & apply these insights is smart work that pays dividends in time & energy saved down the line. "I’m not sure how to translate these abstract concepts into action." Start small. Pick ONE insight from your report that resonates. Just one. And ask yourself: "How could I apply this to one specific task or challenge in my business this week?" Perhaps it’s tweaking your email signature to reflect your communication style, or reorganising your Monday morning to align with your energy patterns. "What if I focus on my 'weaknesses' & feel bad?" This is a big one! But it’s about awareness, not criticism. Knowing areas that aren’t your natural strengths isn’t about beating yourself up. It’s about strategic understanding. It allows you to consciously decide: Do I need to develop this? Can I delegate it? Can I find a workaround? The real power comes from doubling down on your strengths. For those of you who are Foundation Builders, just starting out & perhaps feeling a bit lost in the "who am I & what am I even offering?" stage, using these kinds of insights can be incredibly helpful for gaining that initial clarity on your niche & ideal client. It’s something we often touch upon when helping women lay strong foundations, for example in our Spark Program Page . Your Strengths, Your Success: It’s Time to Act Those personality & strengths assessments are incredible tools. But like any tool, they’re only as effective as the person wielding them. Their true value isn’t in the knowing, but in the doing . So, I invite you to dust off that report. Pour yourself that cuppa (maybe this time you’ll even get to finish it while it’s hot!). And instead of just reading it, engage with it. Ask yourself those powerful application questions. Ready to unleash your business gold? Try this 3-step checklist: Dust off your report: Re-read your personality test results with a fresh perspective. Think about how things may have changed in your business or your life since you first took it. Pick one key finding: What’s the ONE thing that jumps out at you right now? Maybe it’s a skill you’ve been underutilizing, or a communication habit that’s been causing friction. Set a timer: For 10 minutes, brainstorm how you could apply that finding to your business this week . Could you delegate a draining task? Or reach out to connect with that ideal client you've been hesitant about? Building a business that is a true reflection of you – your strengths, your style, your values – is not just possible; it’s the most sustainable & fulfilling way to achieve the success you deserve. - Essential Business Life Alignment Checklist for CEO Moms
From One CEO-Mom to Another: My Essential 'Business & Life Alignment' Checklist for Thriving Amidst the Chaos Okay, let’s be real for a moment, shall we? If your life as a female entrepreneur – especially if you’re juggling motherhood too – feels anything like mine, then "beautiful chaos" is probably your default setting. Some days it’s a whirlwind: School runs Client calls Strategic planning Team management Nappy changes (or teenage angst!) Trying to remember if you’ve actually eaten a proper meal & somewhere in all that, we’re supposed to be visionary leaders, building impactful businesses, and keeping all the plates spinning at home. Phew! Did you know that studies show that female entrepreneurs often juggle significantly more responsibilities at home than their male counterparts, leading to increased stress? See, you're not alone! As a fellow CEO & a busy mum of four – from my lovely, lively toddler & school-aged daughter right up to my equally lovely & sometimes-a-bit-moody teenager (and let’s not forget the baby stage I’m currently navigating again!), I intimately understand the relentless juggle. Honestly, you know that feeling, right? Trust me, I’ve had those mornings where I’ve walked out with one eyeliner on because I was too busy cleaning some unidentifiable sticky substance off the carpet while trying to mentally prep for a board meeting. It’s a lot. & if you’re nodding along, know that you are absolutely not alone. Ever felt like you’re the tortoise in a race full of hares? Me too, sometimes! & that’s okay – as long as you keep moving. This isn't just theory I’ve cooked up; what I’m about to share is distilled from my own journey – the triumphs, the fumbles, the lessons learned while building businesses, completing an MBA with a baby on my hip (my now school-aged daughter), & now navigating a PhD with my youngest two. It’s my personal ‘sanity, strategy, & sustainable success’ system, designed to help you cut through the overwhelm. More Than Just a List: It's Your Power Tool for Alignment Now, I know what you might be thinking: “Another checklist, Carlene? Seriously? I can barely keep up with my shopping list!” & I hear you. But this isn't about adding more 'to-dos' to your already overflowing plate. Quite the opposite. This ‘Business & Life Alignment’ checklist is your power tool for taking radical personal responsibility. It’s a strategic pause-&-reflect system. It's about regularly ensuring your business strategy – how you attract clients, deliver your magic, & manage your operations – & your personal wellbeing & mindset are not just co-existing but are deeply aligned . We’re aiming for a business that supports the life you want to live, not just a business you happen to run. It's about ensuring your business energises rather than drains you. Because let’s face it, when things feel out of whack, when you’re constantly reacting instead of proactively creating, that’s when the overwhelm truly sets in. That’s when we risk burnout, & our brilliant businesses can start to feel like a burden instead of a joy. This checklist is my way of helping you (and me!) stay on the front foot, making intelligent, intuitive adjustments to keep everything flowing, flourishing, & dare I say it, even a little bit fun amidst the madness. My Personal Sanity System: The Business & Life Alignment Checklist This checklist isn't pulled out of thin air. It’s structured around the core pillars of our very own Business Flourish Framework – which, in essence, covers the crucial areas of Mindset & Vision, Authentic Marketing for Female Entrepreneurs: Ditch the Ick! , Streamlined Systems, Personal Wellbeing, & Smart AI for Female Entrepreneurs: Gentle Guide to Get Started Integration (because who actually has the bandwidth for X unless it’s made super simple?). I’ve simply reframed them into a series of personal, actionable checkpoints that I run through regularly. Think of it as your regular MOT for your business & your life, ensuring all parts are working harmoniously. 1. Sharpening Your Vision & Mindset: The Compass for Your Chaos This is where it all begins. Without clarity on where you’re going & a resilient mindset, the daily whirlwind can easily pull you off course. My Big ‘Why’ Check-In: Am I crystal clear on my overarching mission this quarter? Does my current focus still light me up & align with my core values? Sometimes, I’ve found myself chasing a goal that sounded good on paper, but my heart wasn’t in it. A quick check-in here saves so much wasted energy. Honestly, right? Belief Audit: What limiting beliefs are trying to sneak in? (We all have them!). Am I telling myself "I'm too busy for X" or "I'm not good enough for Y"? Time to catch them & consciously reframe them into empowering truths. This is about taking that personal responsibility for the narrative playing in our heads. Like that time I was trying to learn something new while also recovering from my fourth C-section & getting a PhD - did my brain want to explode? 💥YES! Did I take that feeling as the truth? 🙅🏾♀️Nope. I remember when I first tried to delegate social media management. I micromanaged my VA so much that she quit after a month. It taught me a valuable lesson about trusting your team. Foundation Builder Example: Are you thinking, “I can’t possibly compete with all the established businesses?” Reframe it: “I bring a fresh perspective & unique value that the market needs.” Scaling Leader Example: Is that voice whispering, "I don't deserve to charge premium prices?" Reframe it: “My expertise & results justify my premium pricing, & my ideal clients value excellence.” Visionary Leader Example: Are you pondering, “Can I really lead a team to achieve exponential growth?” Reframe it: “I have the vision & leadership skills to inspire my team to achieve remarkable success." Defining Success (On My Terms): Is my definition of success still mine , or have I let external pressures or comparisons muddy the waters? Success for me, as a mum of four, looks very different now than it did ten years ago. Freedom looks very different for everyone after all. Foundation Builder Example: Success might mean gaining your first five consistent clients & generating £1k/month. Scaling Leader Example: Success might mean streamlining your client delivery systems & delegating tasks effectively. Visionary Leader Example: Success might mean building a strong leadership team & focusing on high-level strategic decisions. 2. Authentic Connection & Magnetic Messaging: Shining Your Light Your business thrives on genuine connection. This is about ensuring your voice & your value are cutting through the noise & truly reaching the people you’re meant to serve. Resonance Check: Is my messaging truly hitting home with my ideal clients? Am I speaking their language, addressing their deepest pains & aspirations, or am I just broadcasting? As Rory Sutherland says, "Stories are the PDF files of human information." Are your stories reaching your people? Foundation Builder Example: Are you sharing your personal journey & struggles in a way that resonates with other women starting out? Scaling Leader Example: Are you showcasing client success stories & demonstrating the tangible results you deliver? Visionary Leader Example: Are you communicating your company's mission & values in a way that attracts top talent & aligns with your audience? Authenticity Barometer: Am I showing up as my genuine self in my marketing & communications? Or am I wearing a "professional" mask that feels a bit stiff? I’ve learned that people connect with realness, especially other women. The best advice I ever got (from myself 😄) - drop the mask & just be real. Foundation Builder Example: Ditch the corporate jargon & speak from the heart about why you started your business. Scaling Leader Example: Share your own struggles with scaling & the lessons you've learned along the way. Visionary Leader Example: Be transparent about your company's values & how you're working to create a positive impact. Value Visibility: Am I clearly, consistently, & confidently communicating the unique value I bring? It’s not about shouting the loudest; it’s about shining the brightest with what makes you, you . Foundation Builder Example: Clearly articulate the specific problem you solve for your ideal client & the transformation you offer. Scaling Leader Example: Highlight your unique expertise & the systems you've developed to achieve consistent results for your clients. Visionary Leader Example: Showcase your thought leadership & your company's innovative approach to solving complex problems. 3. Streamlining for Sanity & Scalability: Creating Ease & Flow This is where we tackle the operational side to create more ease & less stress. Because who needs more stress? Not us! System Spot-Check: What one system could I implement or improve this month that would give me back significant time or reduce a major headache? This could be anything from client onboarding to content scheduling. I find the system is going to help us here, always! Foundation Builder Example: Automate your client intake process to save hours of manual work. Scaling Leader Example: Implement a CRM to streamline your client communication & project management. Visionary Leader Example: Leverage AI to automate data analysis & identify key trends in your market. Delegation & Ditching Audit: Are there tasks I’m still clinging to that someone else could do (perhaps even better)? Or tasks that, honestly, don't even need doing anymore? Learning to let go is a superpower for us CEO-Moms. It’s a power move! 💪 Foundation Builder Example: Delegate social media management or administrative tasks to a virtual assistant. Scaling Leader Example: Hire a dedicated project manager to oversee client projects & free up your time for strategic work. Visionary Leader Example: Empower your senior leadership team to make key decisions & fully delegate day-to-day operations. Smart Tool Integration: Am I leveraging technology, especially practical AI tools, to automate routine tasks, gain insights, or enhance my client experience? This isn’t about being super techy; it’s about working smarter. For instance, using AI to help draft initial social media posts or summarise research can be a huge time-saver, freeing you up for the strategic thinking only you can do. Foundation Builder Example: Use AI-powered tools to generate content ideas or create basic marketing assets. Scaling Leader Example: Implement AI-powered chatbots to handle customer inquiries & free up your team's time. Visionary Leader Example: Use AI to analyse market trends & identify new opportunities for innovation. 4. Nourishing Your Engine: Prioritising Energy & Wellbeing You, my dear, are the most valuable asset in your business. If you’re running on empty, everything suffers. This is non-negotiable. Energy Gauge: Honestly, how are my energy levels? Am I consistently feeling drained, or do I have periods of good energy & focus? What’s one small change I can make to better manage or boost my energy this week? As Lisa Nichols says, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows." Foundation Builder Example: Prioritise getting 7-8 hours of sleep each night & start your day with a energising morning routine. Scaling Leader Example: Implement time-blocking to schedule focused work periods & prevent distractions. Visionary Leader Example: Delegate more tasks to create more time for strategic thinking & creative pursuits. Non-Negotiable Self-Care: What is one simple, non-negotiable act of self-care I will protect fiercely this week? It doesn’t have to be a spa day (though lovely!). It could be 15 minutes of quiet with a cuppa, a walk, or uninterrupted reading time. For me, sometimes it's just locking the bathroom door for ten minutes! Foundation Builder Example: Schedule a 30-minute walk each day to clear your head & boost your mood. Scaling Leader Example: Book a massage or other relaxing activity to de-stress & recharge. Visionary Leader Example: Take a full day off each week to disconnect from work & focus on personal pursuits. Boundary Check: Are my boundaries strong & clear, both in business & at home? Or am I letting things slide in a way that depletes my energy or causes resentment? This is a constant work in progress for many of us. You know that feeling, right? 😩 And, I’ll be the first to admit, it's something I've actively struggled with. I recall one period where I’d let client calls bleed into family time constantly , & it caused a huge amount of stress & resentment before I made a conscious effort to ringfence my evenings. Foundation Builder Example: Set clear working hours & communicate them to your clients. Scaling Leader Example: Delegate client communication to a team member to protect your time. Visionary Leader Example: Establish clear guidelines for your team to ensure they respect your boundaries. 5. Integrating Brilliance: Smart Synergies for Holistic Success This final set of checks is about ensuring all the pieces – your business strategies, your personal wellbeing, your use of smart tools, & even your different offers – are working together harmoniously. It's that feeling when everything just clicks . AI for Amplification: Am I strategically using AI not just for small tasks, but to truly enhance my core business functions – from marketing insights to more personalised client communication? It's about intelligent integration. Foundation Builder Example: Use AI-powered tools to identify potential clients & personalize your outreach. Scaling Leader Example: Leverage AI to analyse customer data & identify opportunities to improve your offerings. Visionary Leader Example: Use AI to develop innovative new products & services that meet the evolving needs of your market. Business-Life Harmony: Are my business goals actively supporting my life goals, or are they in conflict? For instance, if I want more family time, is my business model structured to allow for that, or is it demanding more & more of my evenings & weekends? This is so key to not becoming glorified roommates with my partner, which I'm terrified of! Foundation Builder Example: Choose a business model that allows for flexible working hours & the ability to work from home. Scaling Leader Example: Implement systems to automate routine tasks & free up your time for family & personal pursuits. Visionary Leader Example: Delegate more responsibility to your team & focus on activities that align with your values & passions. Offer Cohesion: Do my different services or products work together in a logical way that guides my clients on a clear journey? This creates better results for them & more ease for me. For instance, if you offer a free webinar, ensure it seamlessly leads into the paid course with a clear call-to-action & a compelling incentive for upgrading. Foundation Builder Example: Ensure your entry-level offer seamlessly leads into your signature program. Scaling Leader Example: Develop a clear customer journey that guides clients from their initial purchase to ongoing support & engagement. Visionary Leader Example: Create a portfolio of interconnected businesses that reinforce each other & create a synergistic ecosystem. Making This Checklist Work For You The beauty of this alignment checklist is its adaptability. It’s not a rigid set of rules. If you’re a Foundation Builder (just starting out & maybe feeling a bit wobbly), your focus might be heavily on the 'Vision & Mindset' & 'Authentic Connection' checkpoints. You’ll be asking: "Is my idea solid? Who am I truly here to serve? How can I find my first few clients authentically?" If you find yourself needing more support on these foundational checkpoints, our Spark Program Page Spark Program is designed to help you build that solid base with clarity & confidence. If you’re a Scaling Leader (established business with proven traction & actively scaling), you might lean more into 'Streamlining for Sanity,' 'Nourishing Your Engine,' & 'Integrating Brilliance.' You’ll be asking: "How can I scale without burning out? What systems will support my next level of growth? How can I better leverage AI & my team?" For those of you looking to deeply optimize your systems & scale sustainably, as touched upon in these sections of this checklist, our Momentum Coaching Page Momentum Coaching could be your next powerful step. No matter your stage, these checkpoints are designed to prompt reflection & inspire intelligent, intuitive adjustments for sustained growth & importantly, fulfillment. The journey is not linear, you might twist your ankle but the difference is, is you get back up again. A Final Thought: From My Beautiful Chaos to Yours Juggling the demands of CEO life with the beautiful, unpredictable reality of motherhood is, without a doubt, one of the toughest yet most rewarding journeys we can embark on. This checklist isn't a magic wand, but it is a compass. It’s a way to ensure that amidst the daily whirlwind, you’re consciously steering your ship towards a destination that truly serves you, your family, & your brilliant vision. It’s about building a business that doesn’t just succeed, but flourishes alongside you. And if this checklist resonates with your desire for a more aligned & purposeful approach to entrepreneurship, I encourage you to explore how Femmeprenista supports female entrepreneurs on their unique journeys to success. - Silencing Inner Critic Entrepreneurs: Unlock Your Superpowers
That Pesky Inner Critic: How to Tell Her to "Shush!" & Unleash Your Real Superpowers Ever have one of those days? You know, the ones where you’re buzzing with a brilliant business idea, or you’ve just nailed a tricky client negotiation, and then she pipes up? That little voice in your head, the uninvited guest who sounds suspiciously like a very critical, very pessimistic version of yourself, whispering (or sometimes shouting!), “Who do you think you are?” or “You’re going to mess this up, just like last time.” Oh, I know her well. We all do, especially us ambitious female entrepreneurs who are also often juggling motherhood, households, & about a million other things. It’s like having a permanent heckler in the front row of your own life performance! And honestly, during my early days – trying to get my first venture off the ground with a baby on my hip, or even later, navigating my MBA programme feeling like I was constantly playing catch-up – that inner critic had a megaphone. She’d tell me I wasn’t smart enough, experienced enough, or that wanting a thriving business and being a present mum was a fairytale. I remember prepping for a crucial presentation & my inner critic was screaming so loud, that I missed my daughter’s school play rehearsal - not something I’m proud of! Sound familiar? Thought so! But here’s the beautiful, liberating truth I’ve learned through my own rollercoaster journey & from working with countless incredible women: that voice, as convincing as she is, is mostly telling porky pies. And the real magic happens when we learn to not just ignore her, but to actively rewrite her script. This advice is especially helpful if you're an early stage, or Foundation Builder , entrepreneur, right where the pesky inner critic can strike hardest. The Uninvited Guests: Understanding Those Self-Limiting Beliefs So, what are these sneaky saboteurs we call self-limiting beliefs? In simple terms, they’re the assumptions or perceptions you have about yourself & the world that hold you back. They’re the invisible fences we build around our potential. Things like: “I’m not good enough/smart enough/experienced enough.” “I’m terrible with money/tech/selling.” “Successful women in business have to sacrifice their family life.” (Ah, good old mummy guilt, we see you!) “If I fail, everyone will know, & it’ll be humiliating.” “I need to have everything perfect before I can start/launch/scale.” For us female entrepreneurs, & particularly for mothers, these beliefs can feel amplified. We’re often navigating societal expectations, ingrained biases (both external & internalised), & that ever-present juggle. It’s really funny, because I remember when I was trying to launch Nisbett & George, my first proper venture after university, with my eldest daughter still so little. The internal chatter was deafening – "You can't possibly build a business AND be a good mum," "You don't have what it takes, you're too young/inexperienced/tired." It felt like I was wading through treacle just to take the smallest step forward. According to a study by the Kauffman Foundation, women entrepreneurs often cite a lack of confidence as a major barrier, with 67% experiencing imposter syndrome at some point. It’s no wonder these narratives can take root so deeply! Newsflash! These Beliefs Are Liars (But Very Convincing Ones) Here’s the crucial part: these beliefs are learned, not inherent truths. Think about it. Were you born believing you couldn’t run a business or that you weren’t worthy of success? Of course not! These narratives are picked up along the way – from past experiences, things people have said, societal messages, maybe even well-meaning but misguided advice. The danger is, if we let these false narratives run the show, they become self-fulfilling prophecies. If you believe you’re bad at sales, you’ll likely avoid sales activities, approach them with dread, & guess what? Your sales probably will suffer, reinforcing the original faulty belief. It’s a vicious cycle. I often think back to my early school days. I moved to a new private school mid-year & felt completely out of my depth, terrified to ask questions for fear of looking silly. That feeling of needing to ‘catch up’ & the fear of not being ‘good enough’ could easily have become a lifelong belief if I hadn't, over time & with some fierce advocacy from my dad (who wasn't afraid to shout at teachers telling me to shut up!) learned to find & use my voice. It taught me early on that what we believe about our capabilities profoundly shapes what we do . Honestly, I didn’t realise back then how much that impacted me. Unlocking YOUR Superpowers: The Antidote to Self-Doubt Now for the exciting bit! Every single one of us Femmeprenistas possesses a unique set of inherent “superpowers.” These aren’t about capes & flying (though some days, that would be handy for the school run!). They are your innate strengths, your resilience forged in the fires of challenge, your sharp intuition, your unique perspective shaped by your individual journey. Think about it: Resilience: As a woman, as an entrepreneur, as a mother – you’ve likely overcome incredible hurdles already. That’s resilience, & it’s pure gold. Intuition: That gut feeling, that inner knowing. So often, we’re encouraged to ignore it in favour of “logic,” but your intuition is a powerful guidance system. Creativity & Problem-Solving: Juggling family & business demands requires Olympic-level creativity & problem-solving daily! You’re probably a master strategist without even realising it. Empathy & Connection: Your ability to understand & connect with others is a massive asset in building relationships, understanding your clients, & leading with heart. Learning to trust that intuition is a game-changer. I think back to my own decision to switch universities; even though it seemed like a setback at the time, it was pure intuition telling me I needed a different environment to thrive – & it was one of the best decisions I ever made. These aren't just nice-to-haves; they are potent tools for dismantling those limiting beliefs. When Imposter Syndrome whispers, “You don’t belong here,” your resilience superpower reminds you of everything you’ve conquered to get here. When fear of failure shouts, “Don’t even try!” your intuition might gently nudge you towards a smart, calculated risk that feels right. Take a moment right now. What are your superpowers? What qualities have seen you through tough times? What unique perspectives do you bring? Jot them down. Acknowledge them. Celebrate them. Taking Back Control: A 3-Step Plan for Shushing the Inner Critic Here’s a truth that has become a core tenet of my philosophy, & it’s central to everything we do here at Femmeprenista: while systemic challenges are real, & while those pesky beliefs can feel overwhelming, you hold the ultimate power to change your internal narrative through personal responsibility & ownership. Waiting for those beliefs to magically vanish, or for someone else to fix them for you, is a recipe for staying stuck. The most empowering shift you can make is to decide – actively, consciously decide – that you are in charge of the stories you tell yourself. This is where the real work, & the real magic, begins. And even though I preach taking ownership, & I KNEW that to launch my signature coaching programme I needed to reach out to some previous clients, that inner critic was having a FIELD DAY. I kept putting it off, making excuses, telling myself they wouldn't be interested. It was only when I actually took the leap, despite feeling sick with anxiety, that I landed my first few clients. So how do you actually do it? It’s about sharpening your focus , that critical ability to direct your mindset towards what you can control. Here’s a simple 3-step actionable framework to get you started: Identify Your Triggers: What situations, thoughts, or people tend to set off your inner critic? Keep a journal for a week & jot them down. Awareness is the first step. Reframe the Narrative: When you notice that inner critic piping up, challenge its validity. Ask yourself, “Is this really true? Is there another way of looking at this?” Replace the negative thought with a more positive, empowering one. For example, instead of "I'm going to fail," try "I'm capable of learning & growing, & I'll give it my best shot." Build Supportive Habits: Surround yourself with a supportive community (like Femme:Connect !) & implement daily self-care practices that nourish your mind & body. This could be anything from meditation to a brisk walk in nature to a chat with a trusted friend. I know this isn’t always easy. When you’re exhausted, feeling unsupported (I’ve been there, trying to manage tiny humans & a fledgling business with what felt like zero practical help at times!), it’s tempting to look outwards for reasons why things are hard. And yes, sometimes things are unfairly hard. But what I’ve learned, often the hard way, is that my greatest agency lies in how I respond to those challenges &. - Mum-CEO Work-Life Balance: Taming Chaos & Thriving in 2025
Zoom-Bombing Toddlers & Rogue Toys: The Hilarious Reality of the Mum-CEO Right, let's be honest, the dream of working from home as an entrepreneur sometimes looks a little different in reality, doesn’t it? I mean, the vision is all sunshine & productivity, tapping away on your laptop in a perfectly organised home office, sipping a matcha latte while the kids quietly play educational games. The reality? More like dodging rogue toys hurled across the room during a Google Meet presentation, while simultaneously trying to decipher toddler-speak that sounds suspiciously like Klingon. & let's not forget the joyful zoom-bombing from my six-year-old proudly showing off her latest artistic masterpiece (a pasta-&-glitter creation stuck to the cat). Sound familiar? Thought so! Now, don't get me wrong – I absolutely adore my four little cherubs (and our slightly less cherubic Miniature Pinschers, Cappuccino & Espresso, who think every work call is a personal invitation to perform their latest acrobatic double act). This “beautiful chaos,” as I like to call it, is the heart of my world. But it definitely presents its unique challenges when you’re trying to run a thriving online business & look like you have it all figured out (which, let’s be real, none of us actually do). & see, that’s the thing I want to chat about today. It’s not about pretending these hilarious interruptions don't happen (because they absolutely do, & they’re often the most memorable part of the day, even if you’re frantically trying to mute your mic while your toddler has a full-blown meltdown over a missing sock). It's about finding smart ways to navigate them with a healthy dose of humour, resilience, and – crucially – without drowning in mum-guilt. Because honestly, who has time for that on top of everything else? One time, I was so focused on finishing a proposal before a deadline that I completely missed my eldest’s school play – it was her lead role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, & she was devastated. Talk about mum-guilt central! I learned the hard way that sometimes, the most important deadlines are the ones in our personal lives. That experience definitely inspired me to create more robust systems for integrating my work & family life – a system that allows for the unexpected (like sudden requests for glitter glue projects or, you know, actual important events like school plays). This is where the Flow Flow pillar of the Business Flourish Framework comes in - creating efficient systems for a smoother, more balanced life as a Mum-CEO. From Chaos to Calm(ish): Practical Tips for the Mum-CEO Juggle So, how do we navigate this delightful mayhem and actually get some focused work done? If you're a Foundation Builder, juggling the early stages of your business with family life, these tips, informed by my ongoing PhD research & the lived experience of balancing multiple kids, two slightly deranged dogs, and a growing business, might just be your saving grace: The Strategic Pre-Call Prep: This isn’t just about having your presentation ready. It's about creating a "Distraction-Free Zone" (or as close to it as possible within the realities of the Mum-CEO life, right?). This might involve strategic snack deployments (bribery is a valid parenting technique, right?), setting up a quiet activity (like drawing or playing with LEGO), or even a pre-agreed “screen time treat” for older kids. Now, sometimes, despite the most meticulous planning, the universe (or, you know, your toddler) will have other plans. The key is to have a plan B – part of working smart , not just hard – like a quick, engaging activity you can pull out if things go sideways. Remember, preparation is everything. This is also about mindset – that proactive, “I’ve got this” energy we talk about so much in the Focus Focus pillar. Juggler's Shortcut: I learned the hard way that having a few backup options saved my bacon (and my call!) more times than I can count. Once, mid-presentation, Espresso decided my hair clip looked like a chew toy. Thankfully, I had a spare! I quickly switched it out, laughed it off with the client, and we continued like nothing happened (or almost nothing!). Sometimes, embracing the chaos & being your authentic self is the best Flair Flair you can have. The Power of the Pause Button: If the interruption is unavoidable (a nappy explosion, a sudden injury requiring medical attention – the usual), don't be afraid to use the pause or mute button. Briefly explain the situation to your call participants. Trust me, most people are incredibly understanding (especially if they’re parents themselves) and respect professionalism even amidst the beautiful chaos. Remember, acknowledging the reality, rather than pretending it doesn't exist, often strengthens connections. It's human, it's real, and it’s okay. Even in my MBA program at Cranfield, surrounded by high-achievers, life happened. This is about applying the Fuel Fuel pillar to your everyday work life – recognising that well-being and real life are part of the equation. Quick Clarity Tip: Be upfront & transparent. It's more relatable than pretending your life is perfect. And sometimes, honestly, just owning the mess is what makes us magnetic – that's real Flair Flair . The Art of the Quick Recovery: Things will go wrong. Kids will be kids. Dogs will be...well, dogs. The important thing is your ability to bounce back. Laugh it off, if you can. Apologize briefly if necessary, but don't dwell. Get back on track & keep moving. Remember what we talk about in the Focus Focus pillar: resilience is your superpower as a Mum-CEO. System Saviour: Create a mental script for those moments so you don't freeze. Something like, "Excuse me a moment, I need to , back with you shortly!" Having a system for these moments is pure Flow Flow . Boundary Setting is Your Superpower: Create clear boundaries around your work time – this is your Fuel Fuel in action. This isn’t always easy (believe me, I know!), but it's crucial for both your sanity & your productivity. When you’re “on,” you’re on. When you’re “off,” be fully present with your family. This might mean having dedicated childcare during certain hours (if that's an option), a clear signal (like a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your office door - though with toddlers, that's more of a suggestion than a rule!), creating a dedicated co-working space (even if it's just a corner of the dining table), establishing very clear work hours, or even a specific ringtone for work calls so the kids know when Mum is in “CEO mode.” I confess, even I struggle with boundaries sometimes. Last week, I ended up answering emails during my daughter's bedtime story – not ideal! Trying to find that Flow Flow even within the chaos is an ongoing journey, isn't it? Juggler's Shortcut: We use a special ringtone for work calls, & my six-year-old actually reminds the little one that "Mum's working!". This simple system has been a game-changer. The Guilt-Free Zone (Essential): Let go of the idea that you need to be everything to everyone, all the time. You’re a human, not a superhero (though some days it might feel like it). It's okay if things aren’t perfect. It's okay if the house is a mess & the kids had fish fingers for dinner again. Focus on what you can control – your mindset, your actions, your systems – and let go of the rest. Building a successful business while raising a family is a marathon, not a sprint. Celebrate the small wins, embrace the chaos, and remember you're doing an amazing job. This isn’t just about being kind to yourself (though that’s super important – Fuel Fuel yourself!), it’s about focusing your energy strategically ( Focus Focus ) for long-term, sustainable success. Turning Challenges into Opportunities (Because You're a Boss!) These interruptions, while sometimes frustrating, can also be a source of unexpected creativity & connection. Ever notice how your best ideas often come when you’re not actively trying to think of them? Stepping away from the screen, even for a few minutes to deal with a “crisis” (like a rogue crayon attack on the wall), can actually clear your head & spark new insights. My MBA taught me a lot about strategic planning, but my toddler taught me even more about the power of creative disruption. I remember once, during a particularly challenging strategic planning session, my toddler had an epic meltdown over wanting a purple crayon. It forced me to take a break. & when I came back, the solution I had been struggling with for hours suddenly became crystal clear. It’s like how Rory Sutherland says, sometimes the smallest, seemingly irrational shifts can create huge value. It's amazing how a change of perspective, even a forced one, can shift things. Reflections informed by my ongoing PhD research into female entrepreneurship often highlight these unexpected bursts of creativity amidst the juggle. Fusion – incorporating AI strategically – can help create space for these insights by automating routine tasks and giving you back precious time. & honestly, those little moments of chaos – the zoom-bombing, the toddler serenades, the dog-induced office redecorating – can humanize you & make you more relatable to your clients. They remind us that we’re all juggling, we’re all figuring it out as we go, & that’s perfectly okay. It builds trust & creates genuine connections when we embrace our imperfections & share the real, messy, beautiful reality of our entrepreneurial journeys. This is all part of building genuine Flair Flair - a brand that resonates because it's real. Running a business and juggling family commitments can feel overwhelming. - Navigating Cultural Conversations: A Guide for Educators & Parents
Navigating Sensitive Cultural Conversations: A Femmeprenista Guide for Educators & Parents Right, let's get real about something that's been brewing in my mind lately: navigating those tricky cultural conversations, especially in schools. As a CEO, a mum to four, and someone passionate about empowerment, I know how vital these discussions are, but also how easily they can veer off course. See, my teenage daughter came home the other day just bristling with frustration. Apparently, a classroom discussion about cultural traditions took a turn when a classmate made a flippant remark about her hair – something along the lines of "why do you have so many braids, is it like, a whole day's work?" – reducing a significant aspect of her cultural identity to a punchline. It wasn't malicious, I think, more just clumsy & uninformed. But the sting was real. I remember a similar experience in a corporate meeting where someone touched my hair without asking, commenting on its "texture." I froze, unsure how to respond politely but firmly. I learned that day that setting boundaries, even in seemingly minor situations, is essential. Honestly, it got me thinking: how can we all do better – parents, educators, & especially our young people? Because let's be honest, these are the conversations that shape our future leaders, right? And we want them equipped to navigate these complexities with grace, empathy, & dare I say, even a little bit of flair! Why These Conversations Matter (and Why They're So Tricky!) Now, more than ever, our world is a vibrant mix of cultures & perspectives. This is brilliant! But with this beautiful diversity comes the responsibility to navigate potentially sensitive topics with care. In educational settings, we're bringing together young people from all walks of life, each with their own unique experiences & beliefs. It's a learning environment, not just for academics, but for understanding each other. It’s like that feeling when you finally find the right university course or business niche, the one that just fits - you thrive when surrounded by people who get you. Finding Your Voice (Even When It's Hard) My own journey has taught me a lot about finding my voice. Remember my dad, bless him, having to shout at teachers when they tried to silence me? That experience shaped me. It taught me that my perspective matters & I deserve to be heard. But it also taught me how you express your voice matters just as much as having one. Shouting (unless absolutely necessary, like my dad did!), rarely gets the results you want. It comes down to being assertive, respectful, & clear. And choosing the right time & place to say the thing that needs to be said. It’s the same with my girls – they're quite the mix of fire & diplomacy. My eldest, with her Aries fire, tends to tackle things head-on, whereas my younger two are masters of negotiation & persuasion. The key is to instill in them that their experiences are valid, but how they share them matters. So, in those sometimes-awkward cultural conversations? Approach with genuine curiosity. Ask questions. Listen more than you speak. Empathy, darlings, empathy is your superpower! Try to understand the other person, even if you don't agree. This doesn’t mean silencing yourself. It means creating space for open dialogue, where everyone feels safe to share respectfully. You might find common ground, learn something new, or even change your mind. It's like my coaching approach: I always dig deeper with clients, asking not just why they want something, but what they actually mean by success or freedom. Everyone’s answer is unique. Taking Ownership & Creating Change Now, I'm all about personal responsibility. We have far more agency than we think. Yes, systemic issues exist. I’ve felt like a cog in a giant machine, believe me. But the real power? Not blaming the system, but figuring out how you can navigate it. How you can be a catalyst for change within your own world. My PhD research on Black female entrepreneurship highlights this. The most successful women I’ve interviewed are proactive, not reactive. They build systems, like my Business Flourish Framework , to manage the overwhelm & create consistent progress. They own their journey, every step. Hard work beats intelligence when it's smart work. It’s about finding the right lever & pushing. My research also shows that women who actively seek mentorship and community support are more likely to overcome challenges & scale their businesses successfully. In schools, this means encouraging more inclusive environments. For instance, supporting initiatives that celebrate diverse cultural expressions through art, music, and storytelling can make a powerful difference. It also means empowering students to respectfully challenge insensitive remarks. And at home? Having open conversations about diversity & empathy. Work smarter, not harder – especially when you’re juggling everything! For instance, instead of feeling overwhelmed by the 12-13 weeks of school holidays, create a system to schedule in family time proactively alongside your business blocks. Mindful Communication: A Key to Flourishing At Femmeprenista, mindful communication is a cornerstone of how we approach business growth. You can find more information about the Femmeprenista approach on our website. It helps you to build a successful business and have a life you love. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it. Ask yourself: “What’s the real message?” or “How can I be clear & empathetic?” Active listening is key, too – really tuning in. This is a skill. It takes practice. Just like teaching my daughter to ride her bike – remember that one? Took weeks of wobbly starts and near misses, but she finally got there with persistence and a whole lot of giggles. Same here, darlings! The rewards are worth it: deeper connections, less drama, more joy. It's like when you finally launch that website or land your first client – the journey might be bumpy, but the "wins," no matter how small, fuel your momentum. Your Next Step (It's Easier Than You Think!) Overwhelmed? I get it. Start small. Start with yourself. Step 1: Self-Reflection: Schedule 10 minutes today to reflect on one conversation you had recently. Could you have communicated more mindfully? Where could you have shown more empathy or curiosity? Try using Silva's mental screen technique to visualize how this conversation could have unfolded differently. It’s not about guilt, just growth! Step 2: Family Chat: Plan a short chat with your child this week about respecting different perspectives, even when they don’t understand them fully. Share a personal story about a time you learned from a cross-cultural experience. Create a “family story time” around it. This week, maybe share stories about different cultural celebrations or traditions! Step 3: Small Act of Empathy: Choose one interaction today – online or offline – to consciously practice empathetic listening. This might be in a business setting with a client or team member (e.g., during a work call, actively listen to a colleague without interrupting for at least 30 seconds), or perhaps during a conversation with a friend struggling with the work/family/business juggle. Just try to truly understand their perspective, even for a few minutes. This is especially for you, Visionary Leaders, who are setting the tone for your teams & communities. Another smart step?
