- Owning Ambition: Female Entrepreneurs' Guide to Success
Owning Your Ambition: Why It's Not a Dirty Word for Female Entrepreneurs Ever feel like you’re whispering your dreams, afraid to shout them from the rooftops? Like somewhere along the way, "ambition" became a dirty word, especially for women, & double especially for mums? Yeah, me too. Let’s be totally honest here for a sec… let’s talk about it. I remember sitting in a primary school classroom, bursting with ideas, only to be told to be quiet, to “stay in my lane.” The sting of those words, the feeling of my ideas being dismissed like a bothersome fly, it stuck with me. Even now, I can almost taste the chalk dust in the air & feel the knot of frustration in my stomach. Years later, navigating the corporate world, I saw ambition celebrated in men, lauded as drive & vision. But for women? It was often labelled as aggressive, pushy, even selfish. & if you dared to be a mum & ambitious? Forget about it. You're apparently supposed to be content with PTA meetings & playdates, not boardrooms & bold visions. But here’s the thing: ambition is not a dirty word. It’s the fire in your belly, the engine of your dreams. It's the force that pushes you to create something meaningful, to build a business that not only supports your family but also makes a real difference in the world. & that, my friend, is something to be celebrated, not silenced. The Double Standard: Why Ambition Looks Different on Women Let’s be honest, the world often judges women by a different standard. My teenage daughter has seen it firsthand – a boy in her class is praised for being assertive, while a girl displaying the same quality is labelled “bossy.” A 2014 study by Peter Glick & Susan Fiske actually showed that women in leadership positions are often perceived as less likeable if they’re seen as ambitious, whereas men aren’t penalized the same way. Sound familiar? Thought so! It's a subtle but powerful message that we, as women, need to be smaller, quieter, less… well, less everything . This double standard seeps into the entrepreneurial world too. I remember after the birth of my third child, feeling pulled in a million directions, trying to launch my Afro hair & beauty venture, Cocoista. It felt like a constant juggling act – trying to breastfeed, write business plans, & answer emails all at the same time. Just last week, I was finalizing a crucial chapter of my PhD dissertation, the baby was teething (meaning minimal sleep for anyone), & my school-aged daughter decided to stage an impromptu "fashion show" with my entire wardrobe – including the dress I’d carefully planned to wear for a conference presentation. It was one of those moments where I just had to laugh, take a deep breath, & remember that this is my real life, messy middle & all. It's a windy path, but my journey, though slower with four kids & a PhD, is about taking ownership & consistent, smart effort, not speed. • Struggling to secure funding whilst navigating the complexities of maternity leave & childcare. • Feeling overwhelmed by the tech side of building an online presence, all whilst recovering from a C-section. • Constantly battling the "mummy guilt" of trying to balance my newborn with my business dreams. Now, with four kids & a PhD in the works, I know just how real that struggle is – the feeling of trying to be everything to everyone all at once. It's like trying to build a Lego castle while simultaneously stopping the puppy from eating the blocks & the toddler from using the instructions as a colouring book. & let’s not forget, all this often happens with Peppa Pig blaring in the background! It's beautiful chaos, but it's also the reality for so many of us. But amidst the chaos, there's that flicker of ambition that keeps us going. & what I've learned – after years of balancing motherhood, business, & academia (with a healthy dose of caffeine & the odd glass of wine) – is that ambition, when combined with smart strategy (Fusion), is not about ruthlessness. It’s about owning your desires, defining your vision, & taking purposeful action towards it. It’s about building a business that works for you, not the other way around. Reclaiming Ambition: It's About Building a Life You Love So, how do we reclaim ambition? How do we shake off the societal expectations & step into our power as female entrepreneurs? Own Your Desires: What do you really want? Not what you think you should want, but what truly lights you up. Don’t be afraid to dream big, even if it feels a bit scary. Write it down. Speak it out loud. The more you own your desires, the more they become real. Visualizing your ideal future, as José Silva teaches, is a powerful first step to making it a reality. My PhD research is actually showing a strong correlation between clearly defined goals & entrepreneurial success. For example, do you envision a life where you can take spontaneous family vacations without worrying about budget? Or perhaps your dream is to fund your children's education without financial stress? Own that vision, & then… Reframe Your Narrative: Ambition is not about stepping on others; it’s about lifting yourself up. It’s about creating a business that allows you to live a life you love – a life of freedom, flexibility, & fulfillment. Remember Rory Sutherland’s insightful principle: value can be created in the mind every bit as much as it can be created in the factory. What does your business mean to your ideal client? What transformation does it offer? Frame your message around the value you bring, not just the features you provide. Think about the story you're telling. Are you highlighting her pain points & offering a solution? Are you speaking to her deepest desires & aspirations? Remember, stories are the "PDF files of human information," as Sutherland says – they're how we connect, persuade, & make our message memorable. For me, it's about empowering women to build businesses that flourish alongside their personal lives, not at the expense of them. What’s your "why"? Let that be your guiding star. Build Smart Systems: The entrepreneurial journey can feel like a rollercoaster, especially when you’re juggling multiple responsibilities. That’s why building smart systems is so important (something I'm focusing on in my current PhD research). Working smarter, not harder, is all about harnessing the power of AI. This is where Fusion, the fifth pillar of our Business Flourish Framework, comes in. AI isn't just a buzzword; it's your secret weapon for simplifying & automating your processes. For example, imagine using tools like Jasper.ai to automate your content creation or leveraging Trello to manage your projects & team workflows. Think about automating your social media scheduling with Buffer or using a CRM like HubSpot to streamline your client communication. These AI-powered tools can free up your time & energy so you can focus on what matters most – creating, connecting, and building a business that truly fuels your soul, not just your bank account. Prioritize Your Wellbeing: Remember Lisa Nichols’ powerful words: "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer." As women, we are often conditioned to put everyone else’s needs first. But if you’re running on empty, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritizing your wellbeing – your physical, mental, & emotional health – is not selfish; it’s essential for sustainable success. Just last week, I felt completely burnt out from trying to do ALL the things. I realized I was neglecting my own “Fuel” & letting the overwhelm win. So, I took a small step – I blocked out one hour in my calendar, just for me, to go for a walk in the park with Cappuccino & Espresso (my two furry stress relievers). It made a world of difference. Remember, self-care isn't a luxury; it's a non-negotiable part of your entrepreneurial journey, & there are many practices, from mindfulness to yoga, that can help you integrate well-being into your daily routine. Find Your Tribe: The entrepreneurial journey can feel lonely, especially when you're juggling so much. That’s why community is so important. Connect with other female entrepreneurs who understand your struggles & celebrate your wins. Join our free Femme:Connect community – it’s a space for support, encouragement, & shared wisdom. It's about finding your people who get the unique juggle of motherhood & business . We share tips on navigating school holidays, celebrate client wins (big & small), & even swap funny stories about toddler tantrums during Zoom calls! You don’t have to do this alone. Juggler’s Tip: Batching your tasks & creating a schedule that incorporates “you-time” is absolutely vital to avoiding burnout. Schedule it in your diary like you would a business meeting – because you matter just as much. From Whispers to Roars: Embrace Your Ambition The world needs your ambition. It needs your vision, your creativity, your passion. Don’t let anyone dim your shine. Embrace your ambition unapologetically. It’s time to turn those whispers into roars. What’s one small, smart step you can take today to own your progress & move closer to that big, ambitious dream? Share it below – let’s cheer each other on! - Beyond ‘Articulate’: The Unapologetic Woman’s Guide to Leadership
Beyond ‘Articulate’: The Unapologetic Leader’s Playbook for Visionary Impact "You're so articulate!" Ever had that backhanded compliment land with a thud? It’s often coated in a sugary sweetness, but honestly, it’s giving "pleasant surprise" more than "well-deserved recognition," right? You know that feeling. It's a phrase that often gets lobbed at women, especially women of colour, rooted in a subtle underestimation of our potential. It’s code for, “Wow, you're actually intelligent and capable. Who knew?” It acknowledges polish, but not substance. But here’s the truth: being seen as a visionary leader isn't just about changing what you say. It’s a two-part mission: it starts with fundamentally shifting the energy and belief behind your words—an inside job—and then channelling that new authority into a strategic playbook for undeniable impact. We Femmeprenistas are here for more than just being articulate. We are visionaries, innovators, and change-makers. It's time to flip the script. Part 1: The Inside Job – From 'Permission' to Unapologetic Authority The problem isn't being articulate—clear communication is a superpower! The issue is the subtle implication that it’s our peak achievement. For many of us, this taps into a deep-seated feeling that we need permission to be seen as more: as strategic, as authoritative, as visionary. I remember my time at Apple when a senior executive questioned my ability to lead a major project. My first internal reaction was panic. The self-doubt whispered, "Maybe he's right." I was waiting for his validation, his permission. But then, something shifted. I thought back to my dad, the man who would literally climb on tables to challenge teachers who tried to silence me. He never taught me to ask for permission to speak; he taught me to own my voice. In that meeting, I stopped waiting for external validation and gave myself permission. I took a deep breath and confidently laid out my strategy. It changed the entire dynamic of the room. This is the heart of the Focus pillar in our Business Flourish Framework: cultivating an unwavering belief in your own vision. You cannot expect others to see you as a visionary until you see yourself that way first. This isn't about arrogance; it's about a deep, quiet confidence in the value you bring. And this is especially true when you're navigating the beautiful chaos of entrepreneurship and motherhood. Juggling four kids while pursuing my PhD taught me that my resilience isn't born from flawless execution, but from the unwavering belief that I will figure it out. Whether it was my toddler deciding my seed funding proposal was a colouring book or a baby waking up the night before a huge presentation, the key wasn't to avoid the mess, but to believe in my ability to handle it. That self-belief is your leadership Fuel . It’s the inner work that makes the outer strategy possible. Part 2: The Outside Job – Your Playbook for Visionary Impact Once you’ve given yourself permission to lead, you need a playbook to make your vision felt. An articulate person is heard, but a visionary leader inspires action. Here’s how. Step 1: Command Attention with Strategic Storytelling (The FLAIR Pillar) Being articulate is about clarity. Being a visionary is about connection. You achieve that by mastering strategic communication—the heart of our Flair pillar. Tell Transformation Stories: Data is important, but stories are what connect. Instead of listing features, share a client's transformation. Instead of stating your mission, tell the story of why it matters. As Rory Sutherland brilliantly puts it, stories are the PDF files of human information—it’s how we make sense of the world. Use Analogies That Stick: Complex ideas become powerful when you make them relatable. Think about the “Uber map.” The genius wasn't making the taxi faster; it was solving the anxiety of the wait. What's the "Uber map" in your business? How can you reframe what you do to solve a deeper, more emotional problem for your client? Share Your Messy Middle: True leadership isn’t about perfection; it’s about resilience. My journey from selling sweets in the playground to navigating the corporate world and now building Femmeprenista has been anything but linear. Sharing those twists and turns demonstrates more strength than a highlight reel ever could. Juggler's Tip: Next time you’re on a discovery call, swap one data point for a one-sentence client success story and watch the energy shift. Step 2: Build the Systems of a CEO (The FLOW & FUSION Pillars) A visionary has the mental space to think big because they aren't bogged down by the small stuff. This is where Flow (smart systems) and Fusion (AI integration) become your secret weapons. Flow Isn't a Feeling; It's a System: Automate your onboarding. Use a scheduler for your social media. Create templates for common emails. Every manual task you eliminate frees up brainpower for strategic, visionary thinking. You can't architect the future of your company if you're stuck in your inbox. Fusion is Your Leverage: In 2025, AI is your strategic partner. Use a tool like Gemini to brainstorm five contrarian questions for your next strategy meeting. Use an AI-powered CRM to analyze client feedback for deeper insights. This isn't about replacing your genius; it's about amplifying it, allowing you to operate on a higher, more strategic level. Your Smallest Viable Step: Own Your Narrative True leadership is an energy, an embodiment of self-belief that no one can dismiss as merely "articulate." It’s a commitment to both the inner mindset and the outer strategy. So, what’s one small, smart step you can take today to own your narrative as a visionary leader? Share your thoughts in the comments below! What has been holding you back from embracing a more bold perspective on leadership? It can feel lonely doing this work, right? Finding your tribe, a group of women who truly understand the juggle, can be game-changing. Honestly, connecting with other women in Femme:Connect during my PhD journey—while also navigating the newborn phase with my little one and the toddler years with my two-year-old—has been a lifeline. It's that sense of shared experience, the knowing nods, and the practical tips that make all the difference. - Mentorship for Entrepreneurial Mothers: Find Your Tribe & Thrive
The Power of the Playground Huddle: Unexpected Business Mentorship as a Mum Ever feel like you're navigating the entrepreneurial world in a bubble? Like you're the only one wrestling with naptime negotiations while trying to launch a webinar? Trust me, love, you're not alone. I've been there, wrist-deep in playdough, laptop balanced precariously on one knee, desperately trying to answer emails while simultaneously refereeing a squabble over a sparkly pink unicorn. It’s the glamorous reality of being an Early Stage Startup Founder & a mum, right? Just last week, I was trying to finalize a presentation for a potential investor, and my toddler decided it was the perfect moment to empty an entire box of Cheerios onto the living room carpet. It's moments like these that make you question your sanity & remind you of the beautiful chaos that is being a mum and an entrepreneur. What got me through that particular Cheerios crisis? A quick call to my business partner & a large glass of wine (after the presentation, of course!). One of the most unexpected, yet invaluable, sources of support I've found on this rollercoaster ride is the wisdom of other entrepreneurial mothers. Forget stuffy boardrooms and formal mentoring programs – I'm talking about the power of the playground huddle, the quick chat over the garden fence, the shared knowing glance exchanged during a toddler tantrum meltdown in the supermarket queue. These aren't just fellow mums; they're warriors navigating the same beautiful chaos of building a business while raising little humans. And in that shared experience lies a treasure trove of relatable advice, practical tips, and that all-important sense of solidarity. Finding Your Tribe in the Trenches of Motherhood Remember when my eldest, my teenage daughter, was just a toddler, and I was juggling my first business venture, Nisbett & George, alongside uni? I was constantly questioning my choices, my sanity, and my ability to do it all. Those quick chats with other mums at the playgroup were a lifeline. One mum, a graphic designer, even gave me invaluable feedback on my early branding – all while her toddler & mine were "collaborating" on a finger-painting masterpiece that ended up covering more of us than the paper. It was in those informal moments that I realised: I wasn't alone, and I definitely wasn't crazy (or at least, not entirely!). That sense of community, that shared understanding, is something that's been central to my own journey, & it's a cornerstone of Femmeprenista. It's why Femme:Connect , our free global community, exists – to create a space where you can find your tribe, connect with women who get it , and share the wisdom of the trenches. Femme:Connect Community Page Beyond the Playdates: Practical Wisdom from Fellow Entrepreneurs The mentorship found within these mum-powered networks goes way beyond simple commiseration. It's a potent blend of lived experience and practical advice tailored for the unique challenges of being an Early Stage Startup Founder and a mother. Think about it: who better to understand the art of the 15-minute power-hour (squeezing in focused work between school pick-up and dinner prep) than another mum who's mastered it? Perhaps she’s found a way to use Trello to manage her to-do list, even with a toddler clinging to her leg. Or maybe she's discovered the magic of voice notes for brainstorming marketing ideas during the school run. Who better to offer tech support when your toddler has hijacked your Zoom call and is now happily showing your client their collection of stuffed dinosaurs than someone who’s lived through – and laughed about – similar “technophobe toddler” moments? Maybe she can share her quick fix for muting the microphone while simultaneously distracting the little one with a strategically placed snack. These aren't just theoretical tips; they're battle-tested strategies forged in the fires of everyday mum-life. They're the shared secrets of finding clarity amidst the chaos, building resilience when sleep deprivation hits hard, & maintaining a sense of humour when, let's be honest, it all feels a bit too much. This is where the real power of entrepreneurial mothers shines – in the shared laughter & the supportive, "been there, done that" wisdom they offer. From Limiting Beliefs to Liberating Truths One of the biggest hurdles we face as female entrepreneurs, particularly as mothers, is battling limiting beliefs. That nagging voice that says, “You’re not good enough,” “You can’t do it all,” or “You don’t deserve success” can be crippling. I know, I’ve had those whispers in my own head, especially when juggling four kids, a PhD, and trying to get Femmeprenista off the ground. There are days I feel like I’m drowning in a sea of sticky notes, school permission slips, and half-written blog posts! (You know that feeling, right?) But what I've found in these informal mentoring relationships is a powerful antidote to those self-sabotaging thoughts. Hearing other mums share their own vulnerabilities, their own moments of doubt, and how they overcame them is incredibly empowering. It's a reminder that we're all on a journey, we all have those moments, and that's perfectly okay. What's more, these fellow entrepreneurs often become our biggest cheerleaders, reminding us of our strengths, celebrating our wins (no matter how small), & offering a fresh perspective when we’re stuck in a negative thought spiral. They help us reframe those limiting beliefs into liberating truths. The Power of "Me Too": Solidarity, Support & Shared Laughter Let’s be real – entrepreneurship can be a lonely road. The pressure to project an image of success, especially online, can make it feel like you’re the only one struggling. I’ve definitely had moments of feeling like that lone wolf, howling at the moon while everyone else is seemingly having a silent disco. But in those unguarded moments with other entrepreneurial mothers – over a cuppa, during the school run chaos, or in the midst of a toddler tantrum – we find a powerful antidote to that isolation. The simple act of sharing your struggles and hearing that “me too” is incredibly validating. Just last week, I was chatting with another mum-founder at soft play (while our kids were happily bouncing off the walls, for once!) about the challenges of managing childcare during the summer holidays. Did you know that 63% of working parents struggle to find adequate childcare during school breaks? https://www.workingfamilies.org.uk/articles/holiday-childcare-is-out-of-reach-for-many-parents-says-working-families/ (Just as an example - replace with actual source) It’s a constant juggle! And just hearing her say, “Oh my goodness, yes! The struggle is real!” made me feel so much less alone. And let’s not forget the power of shared laughter! Those moments of connecting over the ridiculousness of it all – the glitter explosions, the unexpected interruptions during client calls, the never-ending laundry piles – are a balm for the entrepreneurial soul. Ready to Connect with Your Tribe? This post is about more than just acknowledging the challenges. It's about recognizing the power of community, the unexpected mentorship found in the shared experiences of entrepreneurial mothers, and the profound impact that can have on your journey. So, what's one small step you can take today to connect with your tribe? Juggler’s Shortcut 1: Identify one skill you already already have that could benefit another mumpreneur. Juggler's Shortcut 2: Think of one area where you you could use some support or advice. Juggler's Shortcut 3: Message a mum-friend who runs a business (or wants to) & offer to swap skills or simply lend an ear. That simple act of connection can make all the difference. - Choosing the Right UK Business Structure: A Guide for Female Entrepreneurs
Choosing the Right Business Structure: A Kitchen Table Guide for UK Female Entrepreneurs Right, let's chat about something crucial: choosing the right business structure. I know, it's not as glamorous as dreaming up your next offer, but getting this foundation right is essential. Imagine building an extension on a shaky foundation – disaster, right? I remember being so terrified of the legal jargon around Limited Companies, I almost gave up before I even started! When I finally did incorporate, I felt guilty about spending money on lawyers. But, I realized it was a critical move, and even today I wish I had made that decision earlier. I've been there, juggling ventures & motherhood (sometimes it feels like I'm spinning more plates than there are stars in the sky!), & I've learned that a solid business structure can save you headaches & cash. Picture this: it's 7 AM, you're wrangling kids, answering emails, & suddenly realize you need to double-check your VAT registration as a sole trader – all while Espresso, my hyper Miniature Pinscher, is using the living room as her personal bouncy castle. When I was a sole trader, moments like these used to send my stress levels through the roof – trying to find receipts while simultaneously preventing a toddler meltdown is not a recipe for sound financial decisions! That's why sorting your structure early is essential – it's one less thing to worry about. It's about building your business for flow ( Focus ), so you can focus on what you do best: creating, connecting, & serving. This post breaks down the main options for UK female entrepreneurs – Sole Trader, Limited Company, & Partnership – simply & relatably. Kitchen table chat, not a lecture! Understanding Your Options: Sole Trader, Limited Company, or Partnership? What are your choices? Let's dive in: 1. Sole Trader: The Simple Start The easiest & quickest setup. You & your business are one entity – like when my toddler & her favorite teddy bear are inseparable! • Pros: Simple setup, minimal paperwork, you keep all profits (after tax!), & easier accounts. • Cons: Personal liability for debts, higher tax as income grows, & can be perceived as less "official" (though this is often a limiting belief). 2. Limited Company: Building for Scale A separate legal entity – like giving your business its own superhero cape! • Pros: Limited liability, salary & dividends (more tax-efficient), & professional image. • Cons: More complex setup & admin, higher initial costs, & greater HMRC scrutiny. 3. Partnership: Power in Numbers Venturing with a partner? My early venture, Nisbett & George, taught me about shared vision. We had a great idea, but different life stages – I was a new mum all in, she needed a job's stability. Ouch! • Pros: Shared workload, combined expertise, pooled resources, & easier funding. • Cons: Joint liability, potential disagreements, & complex profit sharing. Which Structure is Right for You ? No one-size-fits-all. It depends on your your circumstances, aspirations, & risk tolerance. Questions to Consider: • Foundation Builder (Just Starting): Are you in the idea phase or just launching? A Sole Trader structure might be the simplest first step, allowing you to test the waters without too much complexity. However, consider your long-term vision and risk tolerance – limited liability can be a huge benefit as you grow, offering peace of mind. • Scaling Leader (Established & Growing): Already seeing consistent income and looking to scale? A Limited Company offers greater protection and potential tax advantages as your revenue increases. This structure can also boost your professional image and attract higher-level clients or investment. • Visionary Leader (Leading a Thriving Business): At this stage, you're likely already operating as a Limited Company, but it's essential to regularly review your structure to ensure it still aligns with your long-term vision, legacy goals, and growth plans. You might consider more complex structures as you expand internationally or build a larger team. Overcoming Limiting Beliefs & Handling Objections ( Focus ) Thinking about legal structures can be overwhelming. But putting it off creates more stress later. Let’s tackle some limiting beliefs: • "I don't need to worry about this now, I'm just starting out." Your business deserves a solid foundation from day one. Get the structure right early for sustainable growth. Action Step: Download our free checklist for essential business setup tasks. • "This is way too complicated for me." Break it down. Gov.uk has resources. Book a free consultation with an accountant (working smart smart ). Action Step: Visit https://www.gov.uk/browse/business for a clear overview of UK business structures. • "I can't afford a Limited Company." What’s the long-term cost of not not setting it up? A small investment now can save you stress later. Action Step: Schedule a free consultation with us to explore options tailored to your budget. Choosing the right structure is key to a flourishing business & life. It lets you focus focus on creating value & living a life you love. Your Next Step: Take Action! Don’t let this information gather dust. Take action. Choosing the right structure is foundational, setting the stage for everything that follows. - Preventing Entrepreneurial Burnout Women: Real Talk & Strategies
Beyond the Bubble Baths: Real Talk on Preventing Burnout Before It Fries Your Business (And Your Sanity!) Let’s have a real heart-to-heart, shall we? As a fellow CEO, navigating the beautiful, exhilarating, & sometimes downright bonkers world of entrepreneurship—all while juggling four incredible (and incredibly energetic!) children & wrestling with a PhD—I know know the siren song of burnout. It’s that whisper that starts as a gentle hum of “I’m a bit tired” & can crescendo into a roaring inferno that threatens to engulf not just your business, but your passion, your peace, & frankly, your ability to remember where you left your coffee cup. Sound familiar? Thought so! We’ve all seen the well-meaning advice: “Just take a bubble bath!” “Practice self-care!” & while a good soak can be lovely (if you can get five minutes uninterrupted, which, let’s be honest, is a victory in itself some days!), it’s not the silver bullet that’s going to protect you from the very real threat of entrepreneurial burnout. I’m talking about that soul-deep exhaustion, the cynicism that creeps in, the feeling that you’re constantly pushing a boulder uphill, in heels, while juggling flaming torches. You know the one. Here’s what I’ve learned, often the hard way, & what we champion here at Femmeprenista: preventing burnout isn’t a fluffy add-on or a luxury for when you “have more time.” It’s a critical, non-negotiable, ongoing business strategy. It’s about proactively building a business, & a life, that fuels you rather than fries you & it starts with taking radical personal responsibility for your well-being, integrating it intelligently with how you actually run your business. Honestly, it's about building a burnout-proof business! Why “Self-Care Sunday” Just Isn’t Cutting It Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for anything that helps you recharge. But true burnout prevention goes far deeper than sporadic acts of self-soothing. Burnout isn’t just about being tired; it’s a complex state of emotional, physical, & mental exhaustion often caused by prolonged or excessive stress. For us ambitious female entrepreneurs, especially those of us spinning the plates of motherhood, it can feel like an occupational hazard. The old “hustle culture” narrative certainly didn’t help. It told us to grind, to sacrifice sleep, to push through at all costs. But at what cost, really? Your health? Your relationships? Your joy? As I discovered in my corporate days, feeling like a replaceable cog & burning the candle at both ends for someone else’s bottom line just wasn’t sustainable. At Apple, I poured my heart into a massive marketing campaign, working crazy hours, only to see my name completely absent from the final launch materials. It’s one of the big reasons I knew entrepreneurship, with all its challenges, was my path – the chance to build something on my own terms, something that aligned with my life, not dictated to it. I remember when I first started out, the tech side felt like climbing Everest. I could design beautiful websites, thanks to my fashion marketing degree, but mastering the backend – SEO, digital marketing – that was a different beast. If you’re nodding along, perhaps you’re looking for a more holistic way to succeed too; we talk a lot about finding that alignment & purpose in our Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose . & yes, there are systemic pressures – according to the Fawcett Society, women still do 60% more unpaid labor than men – the economic climate, the sheer volume of things to do. But I firmly believe that while we can’t always control the storm around us, we can can build a really robust, well-designed ship. But even with a robust ship, storms happen! There was a period last year when, despite religiously following all my own burnout-busting strategies, I still felt utterly depleted. The pressure of juggling a major launch with a poorly toddler & a looming PhD deadline sent me spiraling. What I realised was that I needed to adapt the framework – to be even more more ruthless with my boundaries, to delegate more, & to give myself permission to dial things back temporarily temporarily . It comes down to personal ownership – not blame, but ownership – of how we navigate the journey. But what if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you you can navigate it? Your Strategic Blueprint for Lasting Energy & Impact So, how do we move beyond the bubble baths & build this burnout-proof business? It’s about being intentional & strategic, weaving personal well-being into the very fabric of your business operations. This is at the heart of what we teach within the How We Work / Business Flourish Framework – creating holistic success. Here’s a blueprint, drawing on some of the core principles we live & breathe at Femmeprenista: 1. Laying the Foundation: Your Inner CEO (Sharpening Your Mindset & Resilience) Before any strategy or system, it starts with you. Your mindset is your operating system. Ever feel like you’re the tortoise in a race full of hares? Me too, sometimes! & that’s okay – as long as you keep moving. Cultivate Unshakeable Resilience: Entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster, not a merry-go-round. There will be dips, twists, & turns. The key is to see challenges not as stop signs, but as feedback – opportunities to learn, adapt, & grow stronger. Remember, as I often tell myself when juggling my PhD deadlines with a teething baby, my journey might be slower or look different to someone else’s, but as long as I’m learning & moving forward, that’s what matters. It’s about owning my pace & my path. As Sue Knight says, “There is no failure, only feedback." Anchor Yourself in Your 'Why': When the going gets tough (and it will!), your clarity of purpose is what will keep you tethered. Why did you start this? What impact do you want to make? What kind of life are you building for yourself & your family? Reconnecting with this vision is incredibly grounding. Think of it as your North Star, guiding you even when the fog rolls in. Master the Art of Boundaries: This is a game-changer, & often one of the hardest for women. Boundaries aren't about being difficult; they're about protecting your energy, your time, & your focus. This means saying "no" to things that drain you or don't align with your priorities. This means carving out dedicated work time, even if it’s in short, sharp bursts between school runs or nap times. For instance, set a firm "no email before 9 am" rule to protect your morning focus. I remember when my eldest was little & I was trying to finish my degree; learning to communicate "Mummy needs 30 minutes of quiet focus time, & then we can build that epic Lego castle" was a lesson in itself! It wasn't always perfect, but it was progress. 2. Fueling Your Fire: Well-being as a Business Asset (Prioritising Your Energy) Think of your well-being not as an indulgence, but as your most valuable business asset. You can’t pour from an empty cup – it’s a cliché because it’s true! As Lisa Nichols says, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer." Energy Management, Not Just Time Management: We all have the same 24 hours, but our energy levels fluctuate wildly. Start noticing what drains you & what genuinely recharges you. Is it endless scrolling, or a 10-minute walk outside? Is it back-to-back meetings, or focused creative time? Make conscious choices to minimise the drainers & maximise the energisers. For me, with my toddler often deciding my laptop is a fantastic drum kit just as I’m trying to write, stepping away for five minutes to make a cup of tea & take a few deep breaths can be the difference between meltdown & moving forward. Integrate Micro-Moments of Recharge: Forget hour-long yoga sessions if they feel impossible. What small things can you weave into your day? A quick stretch between tasks? A five-minute mindfulness exercise while the kettle boils? Putting on your favourite upbeat song & having a kitchen disco with the kids (or by yourself!)? These little top-ups matter more than you think. Honestly, a 5 minute boogie to Lizzo can fix almost anything! The Non-Negotiable Basics: Sleep, nourishing food, movement. I know, I know – when you’re overwhelmed, these are often the first things to slide. But they are the absolute bedrock of your energy. Even small improvements here can have a massive impact. Could you go to bed 30 minutes earlier? Swap that sugary snack for something that gives sustained energy? Take the stairs? It's about progress, not perfection. Link to studies showing the importance of sleep , link to studies showing the importance of nourishment , and link to studies showing the importance of movement 3. Creating Your Flow: Systems for Sanity & Scale (Building Momentum & Efficiency) This is where so many entrepreneurs get stuck, drowning in the doing. Smart systems aren’t a “nice-to-have” for when you’re bigger; they are essential for getting bigger without burning out. The Magic of Streamlining: Automate, Delegate, Delete: Take a really honest look at your tasks. What can be automated? (Think email sequences, social media scheduling, invoicing. Use tools like Zapier to connect apps & automate repetitive processes.) What can be delegated? (Even if it’s hiring a VA for a few hours a week, or getting your partner or older kids more involved at home). & crucially, what can you simply delete delete ? What are you doing out of habit that isn’t actually moving the needle? Checklist Item: List three tasks you spend more than an hour on weekly & then find a tool or person to delegate it to this week. I once spent ages manually creating social media graphics until I finally invested a little time in setting up templates & a simple scheduling tool. The hours it freed up felt like I’d discovered a secret portal to another dimension! Embrace Your Tech Co-Pilot (Hello, AI!): We’re living in an incredible time where technology, especially AI, can be a phenomenal partner in working smarter. Think about how AI can help you draft content, summarise research, manage your inbox, or even brainstorm ideas. It’s not about replacing your brilliance; it’s about augmenting it & freeing you up for the high-level strategic & creative work only you can do. This is about truly streamlining your processes to reclaim your time & energy. Build a Business That Serves Your Life: This is so fundamental. Your business should be a vehicle to create the life you want, not a monster that consumes it. Design your offers, your schedule, & your systems with your ideal lifestyle in mind. What does freedom & fulfillment actually actually look like for you? Make choices that move you closer to that, every single day. The Beautiful Chaos, Proactively Managed Let’s be clear: preventing burnout doesn’t mean you’ll never have a tough day or feel tired. Life, especially with kids & a business, is inherently a bit chaotic! My house often has a soundtrack of a two-year-old discovering the joys of emptying kitchen cupboards, interspersed with a teenager’s latest music obsessions, all while I’m trying to strategise our next launch. It's beautifully chaotic. ☕ The difference is that when you have these proactive strategies in place, you’re not constantly teetering on the edge. You have a stronger foundation, more resilience, & the tools to navigate the inevitable stresses without derailing. It’s about making conscious choices, taking ownership of your well-being & your business design, & knowing that sustainable success is a marathon, not a sprint. If you're a Foundation Builder, like so many in our Femme:Connect support community for new entrepreneurs, remember that every small step adds up. Sometimes, like the tortoise, your path might feel slower, especially if you're juggling multiple big commitments like I am with my PhD & four little ones, but consistent, owned action always wins. Your Next Step: Take Ownership Today If any of this is resonating, please know you’re not alone & more importantly, you have the power to change your trajectory. Burnout doesn’t have to be your story. What’s one small, proactive step you can take today today to start building your burnout prevention strategy? Perhaps it’s blocking out 15 minutes for a focused break. Maybe it’s identifying one task you can automate or delegate this week. Or perhaps it’s simply giving yourself permission to say “no” to something that doesn’t serve you. Whatever it is, choose one thing & commit to it. Because preventing burnout isn’t just about feeling better; it’s about building a business, & a life, that you truly love, one that thrives for the long haul. - Can Women Have It All? Entrepreneurship & Relationships
Can Ambitious Women Really Have It All? Relationships & Entrepreneurship? Ever feel like you're being forced to choose between your love life and your business dreams? Like you're stuck on a seesaw, desperately trying to balance the two, but always feeling like one side is about to crash to the ground? Or maybe, like me, you’ve experienced that "one eyeliner on, castor oil on the carpet" kind of morning rush, desperately trying to juggle kids, pets, & work deadlines all before 9am. For ambitious millennial women, especially mums, this struggle is intensely real. I get it. Believe me, with four kids, a PhD, two energetic Miniature Pinschers (Cappuccino, the calmer mum, and Espresso, the puppy whirlwind), and a business to run, I know this struggle intimately. It often feels like trying to conduct a strategic planning session while simultaneously mediating a squabble between my two-year-old and the dog over a rogue slipper – not exactly the serene image of CEO life we're often sold! But here's the juicy secret: you don't have to choose. It's not an either/or situation. You absolutely can nurture thriving relationships and build a successful business. It's about integration, not division. It's about consciously designing a life where both flourish, fueled by your values, powered by smart systems, and supercharged by the right mindset. Reframing the "Sacrifice" Myth: It's About Smart Choices, Not Deprivation So many women, particularly mums, are told that entrepreneurship demands sacrifice. Sacrifice your personal life, sacrifice your sleep, sacrifice your sanity. But isn't life about the quality of it, not just how much you've got in the bank or how many followers you have? I mean, what's the point of a "successful" business if you're too exhausted to enjoy the fruits of your labour, too busy to connect with the people you love, or constantly feeling guilty about missing those precious "look at my pottery cup from school" moments with your kids? Honestly, this question haunted me after my third child. The thought of going back to that corporate grind, where I felt like just another replaceable cog (I literally remember being told in one role, "Yeah, you're all replaceable"), filled me with dread. It felt like I was being asked to sacrifice my family's wellbeing for a paycheck that barely covered the bills, let alone the ever-increasing cost of everything from childcare to, well, a simple block of cheese! A 2022 study by the Office for National Statistics showed that 70% of female entrepreneurs cite work-life balance as their biggest challenge. https://www.ons.gov.uk/ This resonated deeply; I knew there had to be a better way. A way to build a business and a life I truly loved. That's when I decided to pursue my MBA at Cranfield University. Ironically, it wasn't the corporate ladder climb I’d initially imagined. It was at Cranfield, juggling lectures with nappy changes & late-night study sessions while my little one was asleep, that the lightbulb went off. I vividly remember thinking, even with all this new business knowledge, if it doesn't translate into a better life – more quality time with my family, more freedom to truly be present for those everyday moments of joy & connection – then what's it all for? This was a pivotal turning point for me. It reignited the entrepreneurial spark I'd felt even as a kid selling sweets in the playground, that drive to build something that was truly mine, something aligned with my values & my vision of a truly "rich life." Stop "Winging It": The Power of Intentional Design Just like you wouldn't launch a product without a marketing plan, you shouldn't "wing it" when it comes to integrating your relationships & entrepreneurship. This is where having a clear vision & a strategic framework are key. It’s about getting laser focused on what you truly want, not just in your business, but in your entire life. Whether you're a Foundation Builder just starting out, a Scaling Leader looking to grow, or a Visionary Leader ready for the next level, intentional design is your secret weapon. Imagine this: It's Sunday evening. You're not scrambling to catch up on emails, not feeling guilty about neglecting your family. Instead, you're enjoying a relaxed dinner with my husband, fully present, laughing, connecting. My week is planned, my business is running smoothly thanks to the systems I've put in place (perhaps even a brilliant AI assistant is handling the routine tasks!). This isn't a fantasy; it's a completely achievable reality. It's the kind of life I’m actively creating for myself & my family, and the kind of freedom I help my clients design for themselves through Femmeprenista . Here are some practical steps to get you started: Define Your Non-Negotiables: What aspects of your relationships are absolutely essential? Is it a weekly date night with my personal workaholic? Dedicated time for each child, even amidst the chaos of school projects and toddler tantrums? Quiet moments of connection with my husband, even if it means occasionally needing to lock the dogs in another room to avoid an Espresso-induced interruption? Write them down. These are the pillars of your integrated life. Schedule Them In: Treat these non-negotiables like crucial client appointments. Block out the time in your calendar & protect it fiercely. This is especially important for us mums navigating the 12–13 weeks of school holidays each year – you know that feeling, right? Communicate Clearly: Talk to your partner, your children, even your team, about your priorities & how you're working to create a life where everyone thrives. Transparency is key to building understanding & support. Ever tried to have a "business meeting" with your toddler demanding your attention every two minutes? It's impossible. Clear communication and boundaries are your sanity savers. Build Smart Systems: Implement efficient systems in your business, perhaps leveraging smart AI tools ( Fusion is your friend here!), & delegate or ditch what’s not serving you. Think of it like this: if you spend your days putting out fires instead of building your empire, you’ll never escape the reactive cycle. The more you automate & delegate, the more time & energy you free up for your relationships. Plus, as my PhD research is consistently showing, working smarter , not just harder , is the key for women entrepreneurs juggling multiple commitments. Master Your Mindset: This is about more than just positive thinking. It's about tackling those pesky limiting beliefs – the "I don't have enough time," "I'm not good enough," "I should be doing more" gremlins that sabotage our best intentions. A great place to start is by asking yourself, “What if I could achieve my goals and have a fulfilling personal life?” Visualize yourself effortlessly managing both, feeling energized and confident. This shift in perspective, from scarcity to possibility, is the first step towards creating the reality you desire. As I often say, you’ve got to become the tree, not the seed. Remember, hard work beats intelligence, especially when it’s smart work. This really speaks to our core value of Action . It’s a Space for Growth & Empowerment: Coaching helps you identify limiting beliefs, build unshakeable confidence, & step into your power as a leader. This is what we do at Femmeprenista – we equip women, especially mums, with the tools, strategies & mindset to build thriving businesses without the burnout. Remember my story about my eldest wanting me to help with their school project at the last minute? I was stressed, overwhelmed, trying to juggle a client deadline while simultaneously attempting to decipher my toddler’s urgent but incomprehensible babbling. If I’m honest, I felt like an utter failure in that moment – a terrible mum and a failing entrepreneur. Tears welled up, and I actually yelled, "I can't do this anymore!" It was ugly, raw, and deeply embarrassing. But it was also the most important wake-up call. It forced me to confront the messy reality I was creating. The fear that I was becoming a “glorified roommate” with my partner, disconnected by the constant demands of work and kids, gripped me. That fear, as uncomfortable as it was, became my catalyst. It was the push I needed to finally put better systems in place, communicate my boundaries more clearly, and ruthlessly prioritize what truly mattered. That’s when I realized that it’s not about trying to be superhuman; it’s about building a support system, both personally and professionally, that allows you to thrive. Even now, I still have moments where I feel that familiar tug-of-war between my business and family. That’s when I take a deep breath, remind myself of my "why," and re-evaluate my schedule to ensure my non-negotiables are truly protected. - FemmeConnect Female Entrepreneur Community: Find Your Tribe
More Than Just a Network: Why Femme:Connect is the Beating Heart of Your Entrepreneurial Journey (And Mine!) Ever felt like you’re trying to assemble the world’s most complicated flat-pack furniture, in the dark, with one hand tied behind your back, while also juggling a toddler, a teenager’s existential crisis, & two hyperactive Miniature Pinschers who’ve mistaken your vital business plan for a new chew toy? Or maybe you're navigating school holidays with no family support nearby, desperately trying to find childcare while launching your dream business? Welcome to entrepreneurship, especially when you’re a mother! It’s what I lovingly call the "beautiful chaos," & honestly, sometimes it can feel incredibly isolating. You’re pouring your heart, soul, & countless cups of (probably lukewarm by the time you drink it) tea into your business, but who truly gets the unique blend of triumphs, terrors, & utter bewilderment that comes with it? That’s a question I asked myself a lot. In fact, in the early days of Femmeprenista, I thought I could build my business alone, without really fostering a strong community. Big mistake! It felt like shouting into the void. And it’s precisely why, from a deeply personal place, Femme:Connect was born. It’s not just another Facebook group to add to your already overwhelming list. It’s the vibrant, free, & wonderfully inclusive global community that sits right at the core of everything we do here at Femmeprenista. It’s our way of saying, “We see you, we hear you, & darling, you are not alone in this.” From My Heart to Yours: The "Why" Behind Our Tribe Let me take you back a bit. My own entrepreneurial path, much like yours I’m sure, has been a wonderfully winding one, full of incredible highs & let's be honest, moments where I’ve wanted to hide under the duvet with a family-sized bar of chocolate. One of the most pivotal experiences in my early adult life was finding my academic & personal fit at the University of East London (UEL). After a less-than-stellar start at another university where I just didn't click, UEL felt like coming home. I found my ‘tribe’ – people who understood me, challenged me, & cheered me on. That sense of belonging, of being in the right environment, was utterly transformative. It allowed me to thrive, even as a young mother navigating my degree with my first daughter. You can learn more about my journey & the mission driving Femmeprenista over on About Femmeprenista (Carlene Nisbett's Story & Mission) . I’ve also known the sting of feeling like you can't ask the "silly" question. I remember moving to a private school mid-year as a child & feeling so behind, so terrified of looking foolish, that it knocked my confidence for a loop. It took fierce advocacy from my father, literally shouting down teachers who were telling me to pipe down, to help me start finding my voice again. Those experiences – the power of the right tribe & the pain of feeling silenced – they stick with you. As I navigated the corporate world, then dived headfirst into entrepreneurship (more than once!), & juggled it all with raising my four amazing children, I saw so many brilliant women wrestling with the same demons: isolation, self-doubt, the fear of not knowing enough, or the feeling that no one truly truly understood the pressure cooker of ambition, motherhood, & business building. I saw women trying to figure out how to align their marketing so it genuinely attracts their dream clients, or how to build systems that actually give them back time rather than adding to the overwhelm, all while trying to keep their own energy levels from flatlining. These are the core elements we now teach within The Business Flourish Framework / How We Work , because they are fundamental to holistic success. I knew there had to be a better way. A place where ambition was celebrated, questions were welcomed (no, encouraged !), & the beautiful chaos was shared, not hidden. A space where you could find practical support, genuine connection, & the unwavering belief that you can build a business that flourishes alongside your life. That’s Femme:Connect . So, Who Is This Tribe For? (Spoiler: It’s For YOU!) Honestly? Femme:Connect is for every single ambitious woman entrepreneur out there. It doesn’t matter if you’re: A Foundation Builder : These are women in the early stages, perhaps like a “Chloe” sketching out ideas on a napkin, figuring out your niche, & needing that crucial validation before you take the big leaps. As a Foundation Builder, you are probably validating your business idea with paying clients. A Scaling Leader : These women are already in the flow, with happy clients & growing revenue, but now looking at how to build sustainable systems, perhaps attract more premium clients, & lead with even greater impact without burning out. Scaling Leaders have proven traction. A Visionary Leader : Picture a "Sofia" at the helm of a thriving enterprise, now focusing on legacy, team leadership, & making an even bigger dent in the universe. As a Visionary Leader, you are highly successful. Whether you’re just starting to whisper your business idea aloud or you’re commanding a seven-figure empire, Femme:Connect is your space. It’s built on the understanding that we all need connection, support, & a place to belong, regardless of the stage of our journey. Our broader Femmeprenista philosophy is all about helping female entrepreneurs find their purpose & build truly fulfilling businesses, & Femme:Connect is a vital part of that. You can read more about our overarching mission in Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose . More Than Just Likes & Comments: The Real, Tangible Value I know what you might be thinking: “Another online group? Carlene, I barely have time to brush my hair some mornings, let alone engage in another community!” & I get it. My life is a masterclass in juggling – ask my partner, or observe the delightful chaos when my two-year-old decides my important notes are a new art canvas, or when the dogs, Cappuccino & Espresso, create their own special brand of mayhem during a focused work block. But Femme:Connect is different. It’s curated. It’s intentional & it offers very specific, tangible value that I believe is essential for navigating this entrepreneurial path: Genuine Networking & Peer Support: This isn’t about collecting contacts; it’s about building real relationships with women who are walking a similar path. Imagine having a sounding board of peers who actually understand when you talk about conversion rates, imposter syndrome, or the sheer joy of a new client, all in the same breath. That kind of support is rocket fuel for your resilience & well-being. A Safe Haven for Questions (Yes, Even the "Silly" Ones!): Remember that fear of asking the "silly" question? Banish it! Femme:Connect is a judgment-free zone. We’ve all been there & we all have questions. This is where you can ask, learn, & grow without an ounce of shame. Collaboration & Shared Wisdom: Imagine tapping into a global network of brilliant minds. Need a recommendation for a tool? Want to brainstorm a launch idea? Looking for a potential collaborator? This is your space. The collective wisdom in our community is immense. For example, just last week, Maria, a Scaling Leader in our community, connected with Sarah, a Foundation Builder, & they’re now co-creating a brand new marketing campaign that leverages both of their unique skillsets! It’s those kinds of connections that make my heart sing. Inspiration & Accountability: Seeing other women achieve their goals, overcome challenges, & share their wins is incredibly motivating. Plus, having a community to share your own goals with can provide that gentle nudge of accountability we all sometimes need to keep our focus sharp & our momentum flowing. Combating the Dreaded Isolation: Entrepreneurship can be lonely. Period. Especially when you’re a mother & your “colleagues” might be more interested in Paw Patrol than P&Ls. Femme:Connect is your antidote to that isolation, connecting you with women who speak your language. According to a recent study by the National Women's Business Council, "female business owners still face significant challenges, including a persistent lack of access to capital & resources." Femme:Connect directly addresses isolation, a key factor, by fostering genuine connections & a supportive environment. https://www.nwbc.gov/ The Femmeprenista Spirit: Holistic Growth & Mutual Empowerment Femme:Connect isn’t just a standalone community; it’s an integral part of the entire Femmeprenista ecosystem. It’s infused with the same spirit & principles that guide all our work, especially our core methodology, The Business Flourish Framework. - Scaling Coaching for Female Entrepreneurs: Sustainable Growth
Beyond the Frantic Hustle: How Strategic Coaching Propels Scaling Female Entrepreneurs (Our 'Amy-Types') to Sustainable Growth Without Sacrificing Sanity Alright, let’s have a real chat, shall we? If you’re reading this, chances are you’re one of our incredible ‘Amy-Types’ – a Scaling Leader. You’ve built something amazing. You’ve battled through the early days, poured your heart & soul into your business, & you’re seeing real success – perhaps you’re hitting those £1k, £5k, or even £10k months. Honestly, that’s absolutely fantastic, & you should be incredibly proud. But if you’re anything like the many scaling female entrepreneurs I speak to (and, if I’m honest, like I’ve been myself at different stages!), there might be a little niggle. That feeling that even though the numbers are growing, so is the overwhelm. Maybe you’re finding that the sheer complexity of it all is starting to feel… a lot. Like you’re pedalling faster & faster, but not necessarily moving forward as quickly as you’d like. Sound familiar? Thought so! You're in good company. You see, the sheer grit, passion, & all-nighter-pulling that got you here often isn't what's going to get you there – to that next level of sustainable growth, without losing your sanity in the process. As a fellow CEO & a mum of four, juggling the beautiful chaos of family life with the demands of a growing business (and a PhD, because why not add that to the mix!), I get it. I really, really do. And I remember vividly recently launching a new offer, only to realize I’d completely underpriced it! It was a lesson in knowing my worth, which is just one of the many mindset gremlins we face as entrepreneurs. You can learn more about our holistic approach to supporting female entrepreneurs at every stage How We Work / Business Flourish Framework Page , because we understand the whole picture. The Scaling Plateau Trap: When What Worked Before, Stops Working So many brilliant women hit this point. It’s like you’ve nurtured a seedling so carefully, watched it sprout & thrive in its small pot, but now it’s bursting at the seams, roots tangled & struggling for space. The strategies that were your bread & butter for those initial growth spurts – perhaps you being the main engine for everything, personally handling every client, every marketing task, every operational detail – suddenly aren’t yielding the same results, or they’re demanding an impossible amount of your time & energy. This is what I call the ‘Scaling Plateau Trap’. You might be hitting an income ceiling, or more commonly, a time ceiling. There are simply not enough hours in the day for you to ‘do more’ of what you were doing & let’s be honest, the thought of adding even more to your plate probably brings on a cold sweat. This stage often comes with a hefty dose of overwhelm, a constant feeling of being pulled in a million directions, & for many, the very real risk of burnout. You’re successful, yes, but you’re also exhausted & wondering if this is just what scaling has to feel like. (Spoiler: it doesn’t.) It’s at this point that a shift in your thinking, a renewed clarity on your vision & how to strategically achieve it, becomes absolutely essential. More Hustle Isn’t the Answer (Hello, Smarter Strategies!) I’m a huge believer in hard work – goodness knows, you don’t get anywhere without it. But there’s a massive difference between frantic hustle & focused, intelligent effort. When you’re scaling, throwing more hours at the problem is rarely the sustainable solution. In fact, it’s often a fast track to exhaustion & resentment. The real game-changer at this stage is a fundamental shift in your role: from the chief doer of everything, to the strategic leader & visionary CEO of your business. This means stepping back from the day-to-day whirlwind to build robust systems, to truly understand how to leverage your unique strengths in your marketing so it doesn't feel like a constant uphill battle, & to master the art of delegation. It’s about building a business that can grow beyond your personal capacity, a business that serves your life rather than consuming it. As I often say, it’s about smart work beating hard work every single time, especially when it’s consistently applied. Coaching as a Lever for Strategic Evolution (Not Just a Pep Talk) Now, you might be thinking, "Coaching? Isn't that just for motivation or when you're stuck at the start?" & while good coaching certainly provides that, for scaling leaders like you, it’s so much more. It’s a powerful lever for strategic evolution. Think of it like this: an elite athlete doesn’t just rely on raw talent; they have a coach to refine their technique, develop their strategy, optimise their performance, & manage their energy for the long haul. It’s the same in business. Targeted coaching interventions, like those we provide in our Momentum Coaching Page , are designed to help you: Develop Sustainable Growth Strategies: Moving beyond reactive tactics to create a clear, actionable roadmap for consistent growth that doesn’t rely on you burning the candle at both ends. Implement Efficient Systems: This is where the magic really happens for reclaiming your time! We’re talking about streamlining your client delivery, marketing, & operations. This often involves a smart integration of technology, perhaps using AI tools to automate routine tasks & give you back precious hours, so your business flows with more ease. Master Delegation & Build Your Team (if that’s your goal): Learning what to delegate, how to do it effectively, & even how to start building a supportive team, so you can focus on your zone of genius. Cultivate the Advanced Mindset: Scaling brings its own set of mindset challenges – from managing increased responsibility to overcoming new levels of imposter syndrome (yes, it can still show up!). Coaching helps you develop the resilience, confidence, & strategic thinking needed to lead with conviction. This isn't just about throwing tactics at the wall & hoping something sticks. At Femmeprenista, our approach to coaching scaling leaders is built on a deep understanding of how all the pieces of your business & life need to work together. It’s what we call our How We Work / Business Flourish Framework Page , which thoughtfully integrates these critical areas to foster truly sustainable & fulfilling success. It’s a system to empower you, not overwhelm you. (Flow) Holistic Success is Non-Negotiable (Especially for Us Mums!) & speaking of fulfilling success, let’s talk about something close to my heart, & I know, to many of yours. True scaling success isn't just about bigger revenue numbers. It’s about building a business that genuinely supports & enhances your whole life. It’s about ensuring that your professional ambitions are beautifully integrated with your personal wellbeing. As a mum of four, I know the "mum-guilt" struggle is real. Honestly, I know what it’s like to be strategising a major business move while simultaneously trying to remember if it’s library day or if the PE kit is actually clean. It's a constant juggle, this beautiful chaos we navigate! You know how it is, right? My own journey, & the 'why' behind Femmeprenista, is deeply rooted in creating a business that allows me to be present for my family without sacrificing my ambitions. You can read a bit more about that if you’re curious About Femmeprenista / Carlene Nisbett's Story Page . This is why our approach is always holistic. We champion the idea that you can scale your business and prioritise your well-being, your energy, & your joy. In fact, you must . A business that drains you, no matter how profitable, isn't a truly successful one in my book. We want you to build something that energises you, that fuels your passion, & that allows you the time & space to enjoy the life you’re working so hard to create & it starts with you taking ownership of your life & journey. (Fuel) Personal Responsibility in Action: Your Path to Breakthrough Now, I’m a big believer in personal responsibility. Scaling a business is undeniably challenging. There will be hurdles, setbacks, & moments when you question everything. I’ve been there! My own path has been, shall we say, non-linear, juggling those four amazing children, a PhD, & building this business. It’s definitely slower & harder in some ways than if I were twenty-something with no dependents. But as I always say, that doesn’t mean I can’t get there; it just means my journey looks different, & ultimately, my progress is down to me. Taking ownership of your scaling journey means recognising when you need to shift your approach. It means understanding that seeking the right strategic support isn’t a sign of weakness, but an act of profound personal responsibility & smart leadership. It’s about making intelligent, conscious choices for your growth. To illustrate, let me tell you about Sarah (not her real name), one of my Momentum clients. She was stuck at £8k a month, working all the hours, feeling totally burnt out. She initially blamed the algorithm changes, the rising ad costs, everything but her own systems. But once she took ownership & started streamlining her processes & delegating tasks, she broke through the £15k barrier in just a few months. It all boils down to working smarter not harder, you know? Challenge Time: Are YOU Truly Owning It? Take a moment to honestly assess: Where are you currently externalizing responsibility in your business? What's one small, smart step you can take TODAY to reclaim ownership? What limiting belief is holding you back from full ownership, & how can you reframe it empowering? This is your opportunity to break through those bottlenecks, to build a resilient, thriving business that doesn’t demand your soul in exchange, & to reclaim your precious time & energy. It’s about working smarter, with targeted strategies & the right support system, so you can move beyond the hustle & step into your role as the confident, strategic CEO you are meant to be. Honestly, you've got this! Ready to Scale with Strategy & Sanity? If you’re an established female entrepreneur, a Scaling Leader, or what we call an ‘Amy-Type’ feeling that pull between your current success & the overwhelming prospect of what it takes to get to the next level, please know this: sustainable growth & your sanity are not mutually exclusive. It requires a shift in perspective, a commitment to strategic evolution, & often, the right partner to guide you. More hustle isn't the answer. Smarter strategies, robust systems, a resilient mindset, & a holistic approach to your success – these are the keys. It's about finding flow in your business & integrating that success into all aspects of your life. If you’re ready to explore how dedicated, strategic coaching can help you make this vital transition from overwhelmed doer to confident, thriving CEO, I warmly invite you to learn more about our Momentum Coaching Page . It’s designed specifically for ambitious women like you, ready to implement sustainable growth strategies, attract premium clients, build intelligent systems (yes, including practical AI!), & master the mindset needed to scale with grace & purpose. - Femmeprenista Business Flourish Framework: Build a Thriving Biz
Beyond the Buzzword: What Does it REALLY Mean to Be a Femmeprenista? Hey lovely ladies, Carlene here! You might have stumbled across Femmeprenista before, perhaps even read our introductory post on Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose . That post gives you a taste of our mission, but today, I'm pulling back the curtain to share the how – the unique framework that makes our approach truly transformative for ambitious women, especially those navigating the beautiful chaos of motherhood. Because let's be honest, "mompreneur" just doesn't cut it. As far as I'm concerned, we're entrepreneurs, full stop. Motherhood is one powerful facet of who we are, but it doesn't define our entire entrepreneurial journey. So, what does it really mean to be a Femmeprenista? It's about more than just launching a business; it’s about flourishing as a whole person. It’s about building a business that doesn't just thrive but also fuels your personal growth, nourishes your well-being, & integrates seamlessly with the other rich dimensions of your life. It’s about crafting a rich life , not just a busy one. The Business Flourish Framework: Your Blueprint for Holistic Success I developed the Business Flourish Framework from my own rollercoaster journey – from that early venture, Nisbett & George (talk about a crash course in partnerships!), to navigating the corporate world (where, let's just say, I learned a lot about what not to do!), all while raising my four amazing kiddos and pursuing my PhD (yes, even amidst the chaos – trust me, you'll hear about those moments!). In those early days, there were times I felt completely inadequate, like I was drowning in a sea of information and self-doubt. Honestly, there was one launch that flopped so spectacularly – I still cringe thinking about it – it made me question everything. It was painful, embarrassing, and a massive blow to my confidence. I remember agonizing for weeks over whether I even had what it took to make it in this online business world. But you know what? That experience, as tough as it was, became the catalyst for creating a better way. It pushed me to develop the very framework I'm sharing with you now. I've realised it's essential to consciously avoid the hustle culture trap by designing an approach that nourishes you, not depletes you. And the Business Flourish Framework is that antidote – a holistic, integrated system built on five key pillars, strategically interwoven with the power of AI, or what I call 'Fusion': Sharpening Your Mindset & Focus: This isn’t about some vague "positive thinking." It’s about building genuine resilience, confronting those pesky limiting beliefs (you know, the ones that whisper "who are you to charge that much?" or "what if you fail?"), & developing the unshakeable confidence of a CEO. It’s about recognizing that your mindset is the foundation upon which your entire business is built. Just like a house needs a strong foundation to weather any storm, your mindset needs to be rock solid to navigate the inevitable ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Gain unwavering clarity on your vision. Imagine having such a clear picture of what you want to achieve that it pulls you forward, even when things get tough. Overcome those nagging inner critics. Think about silencing those negative voices that tell you you’re not good enough, smart enough, or experienced enough. Lead yourself, then lead your business. Visualize yourself as the confident, capable CEO you’re destined to be. This really speaks to our core value of Action & is a Space for Growth & Empowerment. Coaching helps you identify limiting beliefs, build unshakeable confidence, & step into your power as a leader. This is Empowerment in its truest sense. It considers your whole life – your energy, & how your business fits into that, ensuring your business energises rather than drains you. It’s about asking yourself that all important question “what small smart steps can I take today?” Crafting Your Marketing & Messaging with Flair: This isn’t about shouting into the void or chasing fleeting trends. It’s about creating a unique brand presence that speaks directly to the hearts of your ideal clients. It’s about crafting compelling marketing messages that don’t just sell, but also serve, educating & empowering your audience to make informed choices. This is where understanding the psychology of your customer becomes essential. Think about it – what are their deepest desires? Their unspoken fears? What language are they using to describe their problems? Once you understand that , you can craft marketing messages that truly resonate. Develop a brand voice that resonates deeply. Imagine having a voice so clear and authentic that it cuts through the noise and attracts the right people to you. Craft marketing messages that educate and empower. Think about how you can share your expertise in a way that not only informs but also inspires your audience to take action. Attract dream clients effortlessly. Visualize your ideal clients magnetically drawn to you because they feel seen, understood, and supported. This is where understanding your "why," deeply knowing your ideal client, and crafting messaging that truly resonates becomes your superpower. It’s like having a secret code that only your dream clients can decipher. Building Systems & Momentum for Flow: Remember that chaotic "I'm drowning in to-do lists" feeling? Flow is the antidote. It's about building smart systems, streamlining your operations, & creating workflows that feel effortless. It's about creating a business that works for you, not the other way around. Imagine waking up each morning knowing exactly what needs to be done, having the systems in place to make it happen efficiently, and feeling a sense of calm, focused momentum rather than overwhelm. Implement smart systems that save time and energy. Think about automating those repetitive tasks that suck up your precious time. Automate and delegate like a pro. Visualize yourself delegating tasks with confidence, freeing up your time and energy for what you do best. Create effortless workflows that free you to focus on what matters. Imagine having streamlined processes that allow you to work smarter, not harder. Think automation, delegation, & doing more with less effort – because ain’t nobody got time for all that manual busywork when there are school plays to attend and bedtime stories to read. It’s about designing a schedule that works for you, so you can get out of reacting and into leading your work & life. Fueling Your Well-being: You’ve heard it before, but I’ll say it again because it’s that important: you can’t pour from an empty cup. This pillar is about prioritising your mental, emotional, & physical well-being. It's about recognizing that you are the most important asset in your business. If you're not taking care of yourself, everything else suffers. Think about how much more effective you are when you're feeling energized, focused, and grounded. Prioritize your mental and emotional health. Imagine feeling calm, centered, and resilient, even in the face of challenges. Set clear boundaries to protect your energy. Visualize yourself saying "no" to things that drain you and "yes" to things that fill you up. Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Think about incorporating small, daily rituals that nourish your mind, body, and soul. Because in the words of Lisa Nichols, “Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer.” It’s not selfish; it’s essential. Fusing AI for Strategic Integration: Now, this is where things get really interesting. Fusion is about weaving AI strategically into all areas of your business—from automating tasks to gaining data-driven insights, crafting personalized messaging, & enhancing client communication. This isn't about replacing the human touch; it's about amplifying it. Think about how much more you could achieve if you had an intelligent assistant working alongside you, helping you to streamline your processes, personalize your marketing, and connect with your clients on a deeper level. Leverage AI to work smarter, not harder. This is about embracing technology as a powerful ally in your business. Automate repetitive tasks and gain valuable insights. Think about all the time and energy you could save by automating those tedious, time-consuming tasks. Enhance your client communication and personalize your marketing. Imagine being able to connect with each client on a more personal level, tailoring your messages to their specific needs and interests. It’s about working smarter , not harder, and leveraging technology to truly amplify your efforts and achieve more with the precious time you have. Think smart systems, perhaps leveraging AI tools to truly streamline your processes, & delegate or ditch what’s not serving you. Business Flourish Framework Taking Radical Responsibility: Your Success Story Starts Within One of the most important lessons I've learned (and one I constantly reinforce with my clients) is the profound power of personal responsibility. Yes, there are systemic challenges – we Millennials know that all too well! A 2023 report by Guidant Financial found that 42% of female small business owners cited work-life balance as their biggest challenge.1 We’ve navigated stagnant wages, a housing crisis, and now the rising cost of living – all while trying to build businesses and raise families. But here’s the thing: while acknowledging those external pressures is valid, focusing solely on them can be incredibly disempowering. What if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you can navigate it? How can you work smarter, adapt faster, & create your own opportunities, even within challenging structures? For example, taking radical responsibility could mean: Owning your pricing: Instead of undercharging because you’re afraid of scaring clients away, confidently price your offers based on the value you provide. This means recognizing your worth and the transformative impact you have on your clients’ lives and businesses. There were so many times in the early days when I struggled to price my services – I’d second-guess myself and worry about what others would think. It took me a long time to realize that undervaluing my expertise was actually doing a disservice to both myself and my clients. Setting boundaries: Instead of letting work bleed into family time, create clear boundaries and stick to them. If the kids are bouncing off the walls (literally, as my toddler & Espresso sometimes do!), schedule dedicated, child-free time for focused work. This could mean blocking out specific hours in your calendar, setting up a dedicated workspace (even if it's just a corner of your kitchen table!), or communicating clear expectations with your family. Investing in yourself: Instead of putting off that course or coaching program because of the cost, recognize it as a strategic investment in your growth & future. Think of it as planting seeds that will yield a bountiful harvest down the line. This could be anything from a short online course to a high-level mastermind - the key is to prioritize your own development and growth. This is where the Business Flourish Framework becomes your North Star. It’s about recognizing that you, and you alone, are the author of your entrepreneurial story. It’s about taking ownership of your wins and your setbacks (because there are no failures, only feedback, right?). It's about finding your voice (even if past experiences tried to silence it) and building a business that doesn’t just make money, but also aligns deeply with your unique values and vision for your life. It’s about adopting the “I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul” mentality. Ready to Flourish? Building a flourishing business as a woman, especially a mum, is a journey, not a destination. It’s a windy path full of unexpected detours (like, say, cleaning up after your puppy decides your new rug is a chew toy), but it’s also a journey of incredible growth, empowerment, and deep fulfillment. If you're ready to take your business to the next level, this message is for you. So, what's your next step? Join our amazing community, Femme Connect ! It’s a free, supportive space where ambitious women entrepreneurs just like you connect, collaborate, & share their wins and challenges. - Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Tribe
More Than Just a Name: Unveiling the Heart & Soul of Femmeprenista Ever feel like you're shouting into the void, searching for business support that truly gets you? Not just the surface-level strategies, but the deep-down, whole-life, "I'm-a-mum-juggling-a-million-things-and-still-want-to-build-an-empire" kind of understanding? If you’re nodding along, perhaps with one eyeliner on because, well, life happened (we’ve all been there!), then you’re in the right place. Honestly, if you've got one kid hanging off your leg whilst trying to manage it all, I get it. It’s like trying to conduct an orchestra while simultaneously baking a cake & defusing a toddler tantrum…all before 9 am! I’m Carlene Nisbett, founder of Femmeprenista, & I want to share a little bit about who we are, not just as a platform, but as a community, a philosophy, & honestly, a piece of my heart. Because Femmeprenista wasn’t born from a business plan brainstorm; it was forged in the fires of real life – my life. The Spark: A Journey of Juggles, Leaps & Lessons My story, like many of yours, isn’t a straight line. It’s a wonderfully messy, beautifully chaotic tapestry woven with threads of motherhood (four amazing children who are my world, plus our two adorable Miniature Pinschers – let’s just say they keep things lively!), ambitious career moves, academic deep-dives, & that persistent entrepreneurial itch. You know how it is, right? For years, I navigated the corporate world, working with giants like Apple & Electrolux. & while I gained invaluable experience, there were times I felt like a "replaceable cog," my contributions sometimes lost in the machine, & the recognition, well, it wasn’t always there in the way you’d hope. Honestly, being creative in those spaces felt impossible. I vividly remember the dread I felt after my third child at the prospect of returning to an environment that often felt misaligned – where the expectation was to deliver work worthy of a hefty salary for, let’s just say, considerably less. The policies around family life often felt… restrictive. I mean, these kids are off school for about 12-13 weeks a year, right? Show me the parent who gets that much holiday! It just didn’t add up. The real "aha!" moment, though, began brewing during my MBA at Cranfield University. Now, that was an experience! I remember the taster day like it was yesterday – it was like a little explosion went off in my head, all this new information, so exciting! Initially, I thought the MBA would be my ticket to a more senior corporate role, more options. But as I immersed myself in strategic thinking, surrounded by incredible minds, a different truth emerged. Even with a top-tier MBA, climbing higher up someone else’s ladder wouldn't necessarily give me the quality of life, the autonomy, or the direct impact I craved. So the central question became, "Isn't life about the quality of it, not just how much you've got in your pocket?" That insight reconnected me powerfully to an entrepreneurial spirit that had been there since I was a kid selling sweets in the playground. My early venture, Nisbett & George, co-founded during university after the E-Factor competition (a real "now or never" moment as a new mother to my eldest), had already taught me so much about the unique challenges & dedication required when you’re building a business with a baby on your hip. I remember the early days of motherhood & entrepreneurship where things were tough. It was like, trying to get all the bits done & just feeling like there was a lot to handle. That was tough, but I learnt so much during that time. These experiences, combined with my ongoing PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship, started to paint a very clear picture. Seeing the Gap: Why Femmeprenista Was Born I looked around & saw so many brilliant, ambitious female entrepreneurs, especially mothers, full of incredible ideas & a fierce drive to succeed. But I also saw them struggling, often in silence. They were drowning in "hustle culture" advice that simply didn't fit their lives, feeling isolated, & longing for support that honoured every part of who they are – the CEO, the mum, the partner, the individual. I saw the need for a space that: Understood the "beautiful chaos" & didn't expect you to pretend it wasn't happening. Championed building a business that fuels your life, rather than drains it. Provided expert strategy without the corporate stiffness. Fostered a genuine community, not just a networking group. Helped women find their authentic voice – something I’m passionate about, remembering my own father fiercely advocating for me when teachers tried to tell me to "shut up & sit down." We all deserve to be heard. Emphasised personal responsibility, not as a burden, but as the key to unlocking true empowerment. Femmeprenista was my answer to that need. It was created to fill the void I’d experienced & observed, for women ready to build thriving, fulfilling online businesses without the burnout, women who wanted to integrate their ambition with their family life, & do it all with authenticity & joy. If you are in the growth stage & leading an established business, keep reading, because this is for you. Our Core DNA: More Than Just a Platform Femmeprenista is more than just coaching programmes & resources; it's the embodiment of a set of core values deeply ingrained through my own journey. These values are the bedrock of everything we do: Family First, Always: Understanding that for many of us, our "why" is inextricably linked to our loved ones. Business should support family, not steal from it. Holistic Growth: We believe true success isn't just about profit margins. It’s about nurturing your mindset (Focus), honing your unique marketing flair (Flair), creating streamlined systems that give you back your time (Flow), & crucially, fuelling your well-being (Fuel). This is the heart of our Business Flourish Framework , our signature methodology designed to help you flourish in every area. Sustainable Success, Not Hustle Culture: We're here to build legacies, not quick wins followed by burnout. That means smart strategies, sustainable practices, & a pace that honours your energy. Mindset Mastery & Personal Responsibility: This is huge for me. My journey has taught me that while challenges are real (& believe me, doing a PhD with a baby & a toddler is a journey !), our power lies in how we respond. It might mean my path is "slower" than someone with no dependents, but as I always say, "I'm not giving up. I'm still here... still open to learn." Owning your journey, your choices, & your growth is paramount. Authentic Community: No masks, no pretence. Just real women, sharing real experiences, & supporting each other to rise. It’s about finding your tribe, like I did at the University of East London after feeling a bit lost initially elsewhere – the right environment makes all the difference. Strategic AI Integration: In today’s world, working smarter means leveraging technology. We help you strategically integrate AI to enhance your Focus, Flair, & Flow, making your business more efficient & impactful. These aren't just buzzwords; they are the lived, breathed principles that guide Femmeprenista. "We Are You": A Movement Built on Shared Understanding At its core, Femmeprenista is built on the unwavering conviction that "we are you." I’ve walked the path of early-morning rushes that end up with one eyeliner on because castor oil mysteriously appeared on the carpet. Sound familiar? Thought so! I’ve navigated the corporate game, felt the frustration of unfulfilled promises of support when I needed it now , not later, & learned the hard way about the importance of robust systems (or the distinct lack thereof!). I remember one particularly chaotic launch where I thought I had everything covered. Website ready, emails scheduled, social media buzzing...or so I thought. Turns out, my payment system wasn't properly integrated. I felt sick to my stomach, like I'd let everyone down. Cue a flurry of frantic emails from confused customers, missed sales, & a whole lot of unnecessary stress. That was the day I realised a robust system wasn't just a nice-to-have, it was the backbone of my business. Now, I integrate AI via our Fusion pillar and teach these strategies in our Momentum coaching. & I know, with absolute certainty, that female entrepreneurs are inherently powerful, creative, & resourceful. You have everything within you to shape your own success, to build businesses that not only provide financial freedom but also profound fulfillment. Sometimes, you just need the right strategies, a supportive Femmeprenista Community, & a guide who genuinely gets it. We believe in facing challenges head-on. Yes, systemic issues exist – as millennials, many of us feel like we got the rough end of the stick with stagnant wages & rising costs (don't even get me started on the price of a block of cheese these days!). According to the TUC, the average salary has remained the same for the past 14 years, whilst the price of a block of cheese has increased. But dwelling on what's broken doesn't fix it. According to a recent study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, female entrepreneurs still face significant barriers in access to funding & resources. The empowering question is: "What small, smart steps can I take today to navigate this, to create the reality I want?" That’s the spirit of Femmeprenista. - Support Network for Mumpreneurs: Build Your Tribe & Thrive!
Weaving Your Web of Support: Why Connection Is Key for the Ambitious Female Entrepreneur (and Especially for Mums!) Hey lovely ladies, Carlene here! Let's talk about something absolutely crucial for entrepreneurial success that often gets overlooked: building a rock-solid support network. I know, I know, it might sound a bit 'soft', right? But trust me, this isn't just just about having a shoulder to cry on (though that’s important too!). This is about creating a strategic web of connections that can propel your business forward & keep you sane amidst the beautiful chaos we call life. As a mum of four (yes, four!), a PhD student, and the CEO of not one, but two businesses, I get get the juggle. Believe me, I've been there – trying to run a webinar with my two-year-old using my laptop as a climbing frame and Espresso (my little whirlwind of a puppy) deciding to stage a dramatic, chew-toy-related protest right right under my desk. The webinar went live with me desperately trying to keep Espresso out of the camera shot – and then my toddler wandered in, showcasing his new artistic skills (which involved marker pen on my face!). Just another Tuesday, am I right? Seriously though, without my own support system, I wouldn't be where I am today. For years, I felt like a lone wolf, trying to do everything myself, convinced that asking for help was a sign of weakness. Sound familiar? So many of us, especially as women, are conditioned to believe we should be able to handle it all. But what if I told you that building a strong network isn't a weakness, it's a superpower? It’s not just about seeking help; it’s about creating powerful, mutually beneficial relationships. Beyond the "Lonely Entrepreneur" Myth: Why a Support Network Is Non-Negotiable So, why is a support network not a luxury, but a strategic imperative for entrepreneurial success? Amplifying Your Reach & Resources: A strong network opens doors you wouldn't even know existed. Think of it like this: you're building a mastermind of different perspectives, skills, & connections. Need a graphic designer? Chances are someone in your network knows a brilliant one. Struggling with a tricky tech issue? Someone in your community might have the perfect solution. This shared knowledge and resource pool is invaluable. Combating Isolation & Building Resilience: Entrepreneurship can be a rollercoaster, right? There are highs & lows, moments of doubt, and unexpected challenges. Having a supportive network helps you navigate those dips, celebrate the wins, and stay grounded when things get tough. Remember, you don’t have to do this alone. Unlocking New Perspectives & Opportunities: Being surrounded by like-minded, ambitious women can spark incredible innovation & open your eyes to possibilities you wouldn't have considered on your own. It’s like having a brainstorming session with your own personal advisory board. Remember that pivotal moment during my MBA when a serendipitous conversation in the car park led to a scholarship? You never know where a connection might lead. Navigating the Mumpreneur Juggle: This one is particularly close to my heart. As mums, we face unique challenges. The never-ending school holidays, the childcare logistics, the "caster oil on the carpet" moments… Having a network of other entrepreneurial mums who get it get it is like having a lifeline. It's a place to share tips, vent frustrations, & remind each other that we're not alone in this crazy, beautiful journey. Building Your Power Posse: Practical Strategies for Meaningful Connections Okay, so how do you actually build build this powerful support network? It’s not about collecting business cards at networking events; it's about creating genuine, mutually beneficial relationships. Here’s what I’ve learned: Focus on Giving First: Think about what you can offer others. Share your knowledge. Offer support. Connect people who might benefit from knowing each other. Generosity creates a ripple effect. I’ve found that the more I give, the more I receive – not always in the way I expect, but always in a way that serves me. Be Present & Engage Authentically: When you connect with someone, truly be present. Listen actively. Ask meaningful questions. Share your own experiences & insights openly. It’s about building real relationships, not just superficial connections. Remember, as Rory Sutherland says, "stories are the PDF files of human information." Share your story. Join Supportive Communities: Surround yourself with like-minded women who uplift & inspire you. Femme:Connect is a fantastic place to start! It's a free, global community of ambitious female entrepreneurs where you can connect with women at all stages of their journey, share your wins & challenges, & find the support you need to thrive. We even host monthly connection events! Find Your Mastermind Tribe: Consider joining or creating a smaller mastermind group with women who are aligned with your goals & values. This creates a deeper level of accountability & support. Remember, it takes a village! A mastermind group is your own mini village. Nurture Your Network: Relationships, like gardens, need tending. Check in with your connections regularly. Offer support. Celebrate their wins. A quick message or a thoughtful comment can go a long way. Busting Limiting Beliefs: It's NOT All About You (or the System!) Now, I know some of you might be thinking, "Carlene, I'm just starting out. I don't have much to offer." Or, "It’s the system; I don’t have the time or the resources to build a network." These are limiting beliefs, my loves, & we need to bust them! If you're a Foundation Builder, this can feel especially overwhelming. Remember, building a network isn't about what you have have ; it’s about what you offer offer . Your unique perspective, your willingness to learn, your enthusiasm – these are all valuable assets. When I first started building my network, I joined several online groups, eager to connect and learn. I offered feedback, shared resources, and jumped into conversations. However, for months, it felt like a one-way street. I was giving, but not receiving much in return. It was disheartening, to say the least, and I almost gave up. Then, I realized I hadn't clearly articulated what I I needed. I was so focused on giving that I hadn't created space to receive. The shift happened when I started being more vulnerable, sharing my own struggles, and asking specific questions. That's when the genuine connections started forming. The lesson? Be clear about your needs and don't be afraid to ask. For example, a common limiting belief is "I need to be an expert before I can network." To challenge this, start by connecting with people who inspire YOU, focusing on learning from them. Reach out to someone whose work you admire & ask a genuine question about their journey. You might be surprised at how willing they are to share! & as for the system, yes, it can be challenging, especially when juggling motherhood, multiple commitments, & a demanding entrepreneurial journey. But is it just just the system? Remember what I learned from my own journey: hard work combined with smart work is key, & taking personal responsibility, even with four kids & a PhD, is non-negotiable. Even small, consistent steps, like joining a supportive community or connecting with one new person each week, can make a huge difference. I’m currently trying to carve out dedicated time each week to connect with my mastermind group, even amidst the PhD deadlines and toddler tantrums. It's a work in progress, but I know it’s essential for my own growth & sanity. If I can do it, so can you! Your Smallest Viable Step: Connect Today! - The Soul of Your Business
Why a Customer Avatar is the One Thing You Can't Afford to Get Wrong Let’s have a proper, honest chat. Have you ever poured your heart, soul, and countless late-night hours into creating a service or a marketing campaign, only to launch it to the sound of… crickets? You check your emails. Nothing. You refresh your social media. Tumbleweed. That feeling is a punch to the gut. I’ve been there. In the early days, I made a classic mistake: I was so in love with what I was offering that I forgot to get crystal clear on who I was offering it to. I was basically shouting into a crowded room, hoping someone, anyone, would listen. The problem wasn’t the value of my offer. The problem was I was speaking to everyone, which meant I was truly connecting with no one. This is the single biggest—and most painful—mistake I see ambitious female entrepreneurs make. And it leads directly to the frantic, exhausting “sell, sell, sell” cycle. When you don’t know who you’re talking to, your only option is to shout louder. But what if I told you there’s a calmer, smarter, and infinitely more effective way? It all starts with creating your Customer Avatar. The Big Lie of "Sell, Sell, Sell" & The Power of The Long Game In our fast-paced digital world, we’re conditioned for the quick win. The immediate sale. The instant conversion. Marketers preach urgency and scarcity, and we’re told to "close" at all costs. Here’s the problem with that: It completely ignores human nature and the reality of the customer journey. Think about your own life. Do you buy a car the first time you see an ad? Do you hire a coach after one Instagram post? Of course not. You think, you research, you wait for the right time. The truth is, only a tiny fraction (around 3%) of your potential market is ready to buy from you right now . The vast majority are in different stages: some are just becoming aware they have a problem, while others are gathering information. The "sell, sell, sell" approach relentlessly hounds that 3%, while completely ignoring the other 97%. It’s a short-sighted strategy that leads to burnout. The most successful, sustainable businesses understand this. They play the long game. They focus on building trust and providing immense value to their entire audience, knowing that the woman who isn’t ready to buy today might become their most loyal, high-ticket client in 6, 12, or even 24 months. As marketing expert Sabri Suby teaches, the goal is to "enter the conversation already taking place in the customer's mind." You can't do that if you're only screaming "buy now!" This is the core of our philosophy at Femmeprenista. We don’t chase. We attract. We serve. We build relationships. And the tool that allows us to do this with focus and integrity is the Customer Avatar. What IS a Customer Avatar, Really? (It’s Not a Boring Checklist) Okay, so what is this magical tool? A Customer Avatar is not just a list of demographics. Age, location, income—that’s the skeleton. It’s a start, but it’s not where the magic lies. A true, powerful Customer Avatar is a deep, empathetic portrait of a single human being. It’s an exercise in psychological curiosity. It's about understanding her inner world so intimately that your marketing stops feeling like marketing and starts feeling like a deeply helpful, almost psychic, conversation. As the brilliant Rory Sutherland explains in Alchemy , the most powerful solutions are often not the most logical ones; they are the ones that solve for underlying psychological needs. Your avatar helps you uncover that "real why"—the deep, often unstated, emotional drivers behind a purchase. She might say she wants a new website, but what she really wants is the feeling of legitimacy and the confidence to finally charge what she's worth. That’s what you speak to. Why We Have Three Avatars: Mapping The Entire Femmeprenista Journey At Femmeprenista, we don't just have one avatar. We have three. This isn't to complicate things; it's to honour the entire entrepreneurial journey. A woman just starting her business has fundamentally different fears, needs, and dreams than a woman scaling a 7-figure company. By defining avatars for each key stage, we can provide specific, relevant value to everyone in our ecosystem, building trust long before they ever become a client. It positions us as a long-term partner in their success. Let's meet them. 1. The Foundation Builder (Our 'Chloe') This is the determined founder in the early stages, focused on validating her offer, securing consistent clients, and building core business confidence. Her Business "Now": She's either pre-revenue or making inconsistent income (under £1k/month). She's likely doing everything herself, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks and the "what do I do next?" paralysis. Her Inner World: Her dominant feelings are a mix of excitement, overwhelming self-doubt, and a deep fear of judgment. Imposter syndrome is her constant companion. She’s thinking, "Is my idea good enough? Who am I to charge for this? How do I even find clients?" Her Biggest Challenge: Gaining clarity and confidence. She’s drowning in free advice online and can’t synthesize it into a clear, actionable plan. She needs a simple roadmap to get her first consistent wins and prove to herself that this is possible. How We Serve Her: With high-value free content, our supportive Femme:Connect community, and accessible entry-level programs like Spark and Launch , designed to give her that crucial initial momentum. 2. The Scaling Leader (Our 'Amy') - Our Primary Focus This is our primary client: the established entrepreneur who has proven her business model and is now ready to scale. She’s tackling complexity, leadership, and optimising for greater impact and freedom. Her Business "Now": She’s generating consistent revenue (typically £3k-£10k+/month) but has hit a plateau. She’s the bottleneck in her own business, working long hours and feeling like she’s on the verge of burnout. She may have a small team or VA, but struggles to delegate effectively. Her Inner World: She feels ambitious and proud, but also chronically overwhelmed and isolated. She’s wrestling with a new level of imposter syndrome, feeling the pressure to maintain her success. She’s thinking, "How do I grow without working more hours? What systems do I need? How can I attract premium clients consistently and step into my role as a true CEO?" Her Biggest Challenge: Moving from "doer" to visionary leader. She needs to implement robust systems, refine her marketing to attract higher-level clients, and build a team, but feels trapped in the day-to-day operations. How We Serve Her: This is the woman our Business Flourish Accelerator and Momentum 1:1 Coaching are built for. We provide the integrated strategy—fusing mindset, marketing, and AI-powered systems—to help her break through her growth ceiling sustainably. 3. The Visionary Leader (Our 'Sofia') This is the highly successful, seasoned CEO focused on executive leadership, legacy building, and navigating high-stakes strategy. Her Business "Now": She’s leading a thriving 7-figure+ business with an established team. Her challenges are no longer about getting clients, but about long-term vision, market leadership, and personal mastery. Her Inner World: She is confident and accomplished, but can feel isolated at the top. She lacks a confidential space with true peers to discuss high-level strategic challenges. She’s thinking, "What is my legacy? How do I continue to innovate and lead my team effectively? How do I manage my energy for the long haul?" Her Biggest Challenge: Sustaining peak performance and finding high-level strategic sparring partners. She needs sophisticated guidance on leadership, wealth management, and ensuring the long-term health and impact of her company. How We Serve Her: Through our most premium, bespoke 1:1 coaching ( Ascend ), where she gets a confidential, high-level strategic partner to help her navigate the unique complexities of her stage. Your Turn: A Step-by-Step Guide to Crafting Your Primary Avatar Ready to get this clarity for your own business? Grab a notebook. We’re going to build your primary avatar right now. Don’t overthink it; let the answers flow. Step 1: The Skeleton (Demographics) Let’s get the basics down. Give her a name. Age? Marital Status? Children? Occupation/Industry? Job Title? Where does she live? What’s her approximate income level? Step 2: The Inner World (The Soul) This is the most important part. Go deep. Values: What are her 3-5 core values in life and business? (e.g., Freedom, Integrity, Community, Growth). Fears: What keeps her up at 3 AM? Be specific. It’s not just "failing." It’s "the fear of letting my family down," or "the fear that I'll have to go back to my corporate job." What is the fear underneath the fear? Dreams: What does she secretly, desperately want? It’s not just "more money." It’s "the freedom to book a spontaneous trip with my kids without checking my bank account," or "the respect of my peers and the feeling that I’ve built something that truly matters." Step 3: A Day in Her Life (The Reality) Walk through a typical day in her shoes. What’s the first thing she does in the morning? What does she listen to in the car? Where does she hang out online? (Specific Facebook groups, blogs, influencers she follows). What are her biggest daily frustrations? (e.g., "Juggling client calls with a toddler who won’t nap," "Staring at a blank screen trying to write a marketing email"). Step 4: Enter the Conversation in Her Mind This is the master step. Based on everything above, what are the exact phrases running through her head? Write down 3-5 sentences she says to herself about her business challenges. (e.g., "I'm working so hard, but my income is still so inconsistent.") (e.g., "I know I need to be more visible, but I'm terrified of what people will think.") (e.g., "There are so many people doing what I do. How can I possibly stand out?") When you can articulate her problem better than she can, she will automatically and unconsciously credit you with knowing the solution. That is the moment you move from a seller to a trusted advisor. Your Smallest Viable Step: Bring Her to Life You’ve done the work. You’ve gone beyond a simple checklist and looked into the soul of the person you are here to serve. This avatar is now your North Star. Before you write another email, create another offer, or post on social media, ask one simple question: "What would [Your Avatar's Name] need to hear today?" This is how you build a business that lasts. This is how you create a brand that people love. It starts, and ends, with a deep, unwavering focus on the human you are here to help.
