Own Your Expertise: How to Confidently Communicate Your Brand Value

Own your expertise! ✨ Stop feeling icky about self-promotion. Reframe it as service & empower others. Your unique gifts matter! Read now.

Right, let’s talk about something that can feel a bit ickyicky for many of us, especially as women: self-promotion. It’s that squirmy feeling you get when you have to talk about how brilliant you are, how much value you bring, & why people should invest in your amazing services or products. I get it, believe me, I reallyreally get it. It can feel like shouting into a void, or worse, like bragging. I’ve been there, hunched over my laptop, cursor blinking, trying to craft a caption that didn't make me sound like I was blowing my own trumpet. Honestly, who actuallyactually enjoys that? In the early days of Femmeprenista, I was terrifiedterrified of putting myself out there. I remember launching my first online course & feeling like I was exposing myself to a firing squad of critics. Every notification made me jump, convinced it was a negative review. It was exhausting & utterly unsustainable. Sound familiar? Thought so.

But what if I told you that promoting your brand isn't justjust about you? What if it's actually an act of serviceservice to the people who need your unique gifts? Imagine you’ve got the key to unlock someone’s potential, the solution to their burning problem, the magic touch that can transform their lives – are you doing them a favour by keeping it a secret? What I learned from that early, shaky launch was that by dimming my own light, I wasn't just holding myself back; I was potentially holding back the very women who could have thrived with the support Femmeprenista offers. It's like having the answer to someone's prayer & keeping it locked in a drawer.

I learned this lesson the hard way. Suffice to say, it instilled in me the importance of finding my voice & using it. But even with that instilled fire, I still wrestled with the fear of self-promotion for yearsyears. I’d see other entrepreneurs, seemingly effortlessly sharing their wins, landing amazing clients, & I’d think, “How do they do it?”

The secret, I realized, wasn't some magic formula. It was a mindset shift. It was understanding that by confidently communicating my value, I wasn't just building my business; I was empoweringempowering the women who needed what Femmeprenista had to offer.

Reframing Self-Promotion as an Act of Service

So, how do we move past the icky feeling & confidently own our expertise? Let’s break it down, shall we?

First, let's unpack the "why" behind self-promotion, taking a cue from Simon Sinek. Ask yourself, why does your brand existexist? What problem are you solving? Who are you serving? Getting clear on your purpose makes it much easier to talk about your work, because it’s not about you anymore; it's about the impact you’re making. This brings to mind one of my favourite quotes from Simon Sinek: "People don't buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it."

Next, think about whowho you are trying to reach. As Sabri Suby would say, "enter the conversation already taking place in the customer's mind". What are their pains? What are their dreams? What are they secretly Googling at 2am? When you truly understand your ideal client, your messaging becomes laser-focused, & self-promotion transforms into a genuine offering of help.

Crafting Your Compelling Message (& Your Killer Elevator Pitch)

If you’re a Foundation Builder entrepreneur, just starting out, let’s get practical. How do you actually dodo this? Here are some actionable tips, sprinkled with a little bit of wisdom, honestly.

  • Know Your Value: What makes you different? What specific problem do you solve better than anyone else? Don’t be shy about highlighting your unique strengths & experiences. Your journey, with all its twists & turns, has shaped you into the expert you are today. Own it!

To help you get crystal clear on this, grab a pen and paper (or open a new doc – whatever works for you!) & answer these questions:

  • What are you uniquelyuniquely good at? What comes naturally to you that others struggle with?

  • What are your biggest accomplishments (personal or professional)? What did you learn from them?

  • What are you most passionate about sharing with the world? What lights you up?

Your answers to these questions will form the foundation of your brand's unique value proposition. It’s your secret sauce!

  • Clarity Over Cleverness: Sometimes, I get caught up in trying to be clever or witty in my messaging. It can backfire! As Rory Sutherland, the master of marketing psychology, reminds us, “Clarity over cleverness.” Focus on communicating your value simply & directly. Avoid jargon. Remember, effective communication is about making sure people get your message, not showcasing your extensive vocabulary.

  • The Elevator Pitch Perfect: Imagine you're trapped in a lift with your dream client (hopefully, it's a more pleasant experience than when my toddler daughter decided to use the dog's water bowl as her personal bath – pets & kids, eh? You know the drill!). You have 30 seconds. What do you say? Your elevator pitch should concisely communicate who you are, what you do, & who you serve. Practice it until it feels natural.

  • Storytelling is Key: "Stories are the PDF files of human information," says Rory Sutherland. Weave your personal experiences, client successes (anonymized, of course!), & the "why" behind your brand into your messaging. People connect with stories. They make you relatable, memorable, & trustworthy. Remember my “dogs in a crate” story? It paints a picture of the struggle many mothers face, making the message about Work-Life Integration for Mums: Ditch the Myth & Flourish! so much more powerful.

  • Online & Offline Consistency: Your message should be consistent across all platforms – your website, social media, networking events, even your email signature. For example, ensure your profile picture is the same across LinkedIn, Instagram, & Facebook. Use your brand colours consistently in your visuals & website design. Finally, don’t be afraid to use your elevator pitch when networking in person.

Overcoming the Fear & Stepping into Your Power

Okay, so you've got your message, you understand the "why", & you've even practiced your elevator pitch in front of the mirror (don't worry, we all do it). But that pesky fear is still lingering, right? It's normal. Trust me, as someone juggling multiple businesses, a PhD, & the joys of motherhood (anyone else ever tried to record a podcast while their six-year-old practices the recorder? Just me? Okay then!), I understand the fear. So, how do we tackle it?

  • Reframe Your Thinking: What if, instead of seeing self-promotion as bragging, you saw it as sharing a gift? When you are confident in your value, sharing it becomes an act of generosity, not ego.

  • Start Small: You don’t have to become a social media megastar overnight. Share one win this week. Comment on a relevant post. Connect with a potential client. Small, consistent actions build confidence & momentum.
