- Mumpreneur Focus & Productivity: Reclaim Your Time (Now!)
The Bat-Signal Effect: When Your Noise-Cancelling Headphones Become a Mumpreneur's Kryptonite (and How to Reclaim Your Focus!) Alright, loves, let's keep it real. As female entrepreneurs, we've all been there. You finally carve out some precious, kid-free time to actually focus on that looming deadline. Noise-cancelling headphones on, world tuned out, laser-sharp focus activated... & then BAM! The unmistakable high-pitched shriek of your toddler discovering the joys of finger-painting… on the wall. Or the urgent, insistent tapping on your office door (that you definitely locked) accompanied by the plaintive wail, "Mummy, I NEED you!". It's like a comedically tragic bat-signal, isn't it? Those blessed noise-cancelling headphones, meant to be our sanctuary of silence, become the very things that highlight how instantly accessible (and needed!) we are, even when we desperately try to create some separation between the beautiful chaos of family & the focused work of building our empires. This whole scenario is profoundly relatable, I know. I've been there more times than I can count, honestly. Just last week, I was finally getting into flow, writing a new module for the Launch Programme, headphones on, world blissfully silent, only to be jolted back to reality by my two-year-old using my office door as a makeshift drum kit. It wasn't just drumming; it was the ABC song… repeatedly. There was this one time I broke down in tears in the pantry. My toddler was screaming, my client was calling, and I was covered in baby food... It’s the kind of moment that makes you laugh & cry simultaneously, right? & as much as we cherish those "little pottery cup from school" moments & deciphering "toddler language" is an art form in itself, there are times when we need . To. Focus . The Beautiful Interruptions & The Guilt Gremlin The thing is, these interruptions, as frustrating as they can be, are also often beautiful, heartwarming reminders of the incredible love & connection we have with our little ones (& not-so-little ones, for those of us navigating the joys of teenagerdom). The problem isn't the interruption itself; it's how we often respond, both internally & externally. The "guilt gremlin" often sneaks in, whispering insidious doubts: "Should I be working right now?", "Am I a bad mum for prioritizing my business?", "They need me, & I'm here hiding behind these giant headphones!". Seriously, who invented mum-guilt anyway? Can we collectively banish it to a remote island? From Reaction to Response: Reclaiming Your Focus & Flow But here's the empowering truth: we can reclaim our focus. We can navigate these inevitable interruptions with more grace, less guilt, & significantly improved productivity. This is where we step up from being a stressed, caffeine-fueled, constantly-reacting Supermum, to being a calm, strategic, & empowered CEO of both our business & our family life (because seriously, these are both demanding leadership roles!). Remember, our Business Flourish Framework is all about giving you those systems, strategies, & mindset shifts to thrive, not just survive. It starts with taking personal responsibility for our focus. It’s about recognizing that while external factors (like, you know, a tiny human using your head as a bongo drum) can impact us, our response is what truly matters. "If I don't get there, that’s my fault," is a principle I live by, even when my path is slower due to, say, four kids, a PhD, and recovering from a C-section. It’s about owning my journey. Here's how: Mindset Mastery: Taming the Guilt Gremlin & Embracing Imperfect Productivity Reframe the Narrative: Those interruptions aren't failures of time management; they are integral to the rich tapestry of our lives. Embrace the imperfect productivity of motherhood & entrepreneurship. Ever tried to write a marketing email while simultaneously refereeing a sibling squabble over a stolen toy? That's real-life multitasking, loves! Reflecting on my own PhD research, I often see this theme of "embracing the juggle" emerge as a key strength for female entrepreneurs. It’s those "one eyeliner on because I was too busy cleaning castor oil off the carpet" moments that remind us we're human, right? Boundary Setting (with Kindness): It's okay to say "not now" with love & firmness. My teenage daughter sometimes forgets that a closed office door means "focus time, unless it's an actual emergency," which in her world could include anything from a Wi-Fi outage to a "life-altering" social media update. Gentle reminders work wonders. Sometimes I even make a "Do Not Disturb, Genius at Work" sign for the door, which usually elicits an eye-roll but gets the message across. It’s like what I learned from that coaching qualification I did while pregnant with my third daughter – setting boundaries isn’t selfish; it's essential for everyone's well-being. Pre-emptive Planning (& the Art of Distraction): I've learned that having a stash of engaging activities for the kids is key. Think craft supplies, a new colouring book, age-appropriate apps, or even letting them "help" with something related to your work (my six-year-old is currently obsessed with organizing my coloured pens, bless her heart). It's not foolproof, but it buys you precious pockets of focus. Like that time I tried to record a podcast episode while my toddler was "helping" me by enthusiastically shredding a roll of toilet paper – not exactly conducive to a professional recording, but hey, at least she was occupied for a while! As they say, failing to plan is planning to fail. It's all about finding those small, smart changes that make a big difference in our day, right? These are what Rory Sutherland calls "psychological moonshots"—small tweaks that shift our perception and experience. For instance, simply having a dedicated "creation station" stocked with art supplies can transform a potential meltdown into a moment of quiet focus for both you and your little Picasso. System Saviours & Smart AI Integration: Working Smarter, Not Just Harder The Business Flourish Framework is all about building businesses that flourish alongside our lives, not demand we sacrifice everything to them. We do this with smart systems & smart use of technology, including AI via Fusion, to make things work for us. Fusion isn't about robots taking over, it's about strategically using AI tools to streamline our work and free up our time and mental energy. It's time to stop digging holes with teaspoons & start using a JCB. Time Blocking & Prioritization: Plan your work around family needs. Use your calendar as your compass & schedule your most demanding tasks for times when you are most likely to have uninterrupted focus (even if that means early mornings or late evenings). Be realistic, & don't try to squeeze a full workday into naptime. I tried that once; it didn't end well (let's just say cold coffee & a half-written blog post were involved). Remember, "poor people major in minor things; wealthy people major in major things" (thanks for the wisdom, Myron!). Prioritizing those high-impact tasks is key for moving the needle in your business. Leveraging AI for Streamlined Communication: Use scheduling tools like Calendly to eliminate back-&forth emails (a true time-saver!). For example, if you’re offering discovery calls, set up a Calendly link that allows potential clients to book a time that works for both of you, without the endless email chain. This not only makes you look professional but also frees up your time to focus on other areas of your business. Explore AI communication assistants to manage routine inquiries or social media engagement, freeing up your precious time & energy. My research into women's entrepreneurship continually highlights how crucial efficient systems are for sustainable growth. For instance, just last month, one of my Momentum Coaching clients implemented an AI-powered chatbot on her website & saw a 20% increase in qualified leads. The chatbot handled initial inquiries & scheduling, freeing her up to focus on client delivery & strategic growth. This is a perfect example of Fusion in action – integrating AI strategically to amplify results. The system is going to help us, after all. Embrace Automation Where Possible: Set up automated email sequences for onboarding clients, sending reminders, or delivering valuable content. This not only saves time but ensures a consistent & professional client experience. Think of it like this: your automated emails are like your always-on brand ambassador, working tirelessly behind the scenes while you focus on other important tasks. This is like having a virtual assistant working 24/7, even if you're currently a one-woman show. Imagine you're launching a new program. An automated welcome sequence can deliver valuable pre-launch content, build excitement, and answer common questions, freeing you up to focus on the bigger picture. Wellbeing Warriors: Fueling Your Focus (& Avoiding Burnout) Here's the thing, loves: we can't pour from an empty cup. If we're constantly running on fumes, those interruptions will feel like catastrophic derailments, not manageable bumps in the road. Taking care of ourselves is essential, not selfish. I always say, "your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer." (Thanks, Lisa Nichols, for that gem!). This isn't just some fluffy self-help stuff; this is foundational to building a sustainable business. You're a business owner, yes, but you're also a whole person. Remember that. Prioritize Sleep (as much as humanly possible with small humans): I know, easier said than done, right? But even small improvements in sleep quality can make a world of difference. Try incorporating a "power nap" during the kids' quiet time, even if it's just 20 minutes. I recently discovered the magic of a guided meditation app specifically designed for power naps, & it's a game-changer. I’m not saying it’s easy, but remember: small consistent efforts, right? Like my MBA experience at Cranfield while my daughter was a baby? It was intense, but I learned that prioritizing even small pockets of rest was key to functioning. Move Your Body (even if it's just a dance party in the kitchen with your toddler): Exercise boosts energy, reduces stress, & clears your head. Schedule a quick 20-minute workout during their screen time or a brisk walk during a phone call. Don’t think marathon; think sprint! Like that time I managed to squeeze in a quick yoga flow while the kids were building a fort in the living room? It wasn’t perfect, but it made all the difference to my energy levels that afternoon. Even small efforts like taking the stairs instead of the lift can shift our perspective and boost wellbeing. Hydrate (because caffeine alone won't sustain you): Seriously, water is your friend. A hydrated brain is a focused brain. Keep a water bottle on your desk & aim to refill it throughout the day. I even bought myself a fancy water bottle with time markers on it, which might seem silly, but it actually helps me stay on track! My current favourite is infusing my water with sliced cucumber & mint – it feels like such a treat! From Kryptonite to Catalyst: Embracing the Beautiful Chaos The truth is, these interruptions, as much as they test our sanity, are also reminders of the incredible richness of our lives. They are the messy, beautiful tapestry of motherhood & entrepreneurship interwoven. By shifting our mindset, implementing smart systems, & prioritizing our well-being, we can transform those noise-cancelling headphones from a symbol of frustration into a tool for focused productivity, even amidst the beautiful chaos. Remember, female entrepreneurs, we’re not just building businesses; we’re building lives. & that life, as messy as it sometimes is, is also incredibly beautiful. So, next time your toddler’s shriek pierces through your carefully constructed sound barrier, take a deep breath, remind yourself of your "why," & know that you've got this. You're not alone in this wild ride! What’s one strategy you use to navigate interruptions? Share your tips in the comments – let’s support each other! - Mumpreneur Chaos: Business Brilliance in the Beautiful Mess
Finding the Funny in the Flourish: How Mumpreneur Chaos Fuels Business Brilliance Right, let's be honest, who hasn't had one of those mornings? You know, the kind where you're trying to finish a proposal, my toddler daughter's discovered the joys of smearing banana on the wall (apparently, it's an excellent medium for abstract art), my teenage daughter's having an existential crisis over her GCSE options, and Espresso, our miniature pinscher puppy, is using my research notes as a chew toy. Oh, and did I mention I’m trying to finish my PhD while recovering from my fourth C-section? It's a scene straight out of a sitcom, but with significantly less canned laughter and definitely more caffeine involved. This beautiful chaos, if you're just starting out – what we at Femmeprenista call a Foundation Builder Foundation Builder – can feel especially overwhelming. But what if I told you this very chaos could be your secret weapon? The everyday juggle of motherhood & entrepreneurship is a surprising source of brilliant business insights if we just shift our perspective. About (Carlene Nisbett) From Miniature Pinschers to PhDs: Finding the Unexpected Parallels For instance, take my dogs. Cappuccino, the older one, is pretty chilled. Espresso, however, is a tiny ball of perpetual motion, bouncing off walls (literally) and generally embodying the spirit of untamed energy. Dealing with their contrasting personalities is a masterclass in adaptability – and let me tell you, as a Gemini, adaptability is kind of my superpower!. Sound familiar? It’s exactly the same skill you need when navigating the ever-shifting landscape of online business. One minute you're riding high on a successful launch, the next you're tweaking your marketing strategy because Instagram decided to change the algorithm again . Adaptability isn't just a nice-to-have; it's your entrepreneurial survival kit. Then there's the PhD. Juggling research with running a business & raising a family is... well, let's just say it’s taught me the profound importance of prioritizing & building robust systems. Just like I have dedicated writing slots carved into my week (guarded fiercely against toddler invasions & puppy-related paper shredding incidents), I also have streamlined processes for client onboarding, content creation, & pretty much everything else. Because, honestly, when you're juggling multiple roles, working smarter, not harder, is non-negotiable. Working Smarter, Not Harder: Integrating AI This is where strategically integrating AI comes in. Think of AI as your super-efficient virtual assistant, powered by what we call Fusion Fusion at Femmeprenista – it's all about using AI to enhance every aspect of your business, from automating those repetitive tasks, like scheduling social media posts or answering basic client inquiries, to gaining powerful insights about your ideal client. Fusion Fusion frees up your time for the strategic stuff – or, you know, just having five minutes to actually drink your coffee while it’s still hot! Integrating AI is about working smarter, not harder, maximizing your efficiency so you can be more present for both your business & your family. It’s the modern mum's secret weapon. Embracing the Curveballs: It’s All About Mindset The biggest lesson, though, the one that underpins everything, is the power of mindset. Just like I can choose to see my chaotic mornings as a source of humour rather than a descent into madness (most days!), I can also choose to view business challenges as opportunities for growth, not reasons to throw in the towel. It’s about cultivating radical personal responsibility. Cocoista's Comeback: A Mindset Story This reminds me of a time when I was launching Cocoista, my afro hair & beauty business. I’d poured my heart & soul into creating what I thought was an amazing product line, but the initial launch was a total flop. I felt like a failure, ready to give up. But then, I remembered my dad's words echoing in my ear, "You might twist your ankle, but the difference is, you get back up again." So, I dusted myself off, took a deep breath, & started analyzing why it hadn't worked. Turns out, my marketing message was all about the amazing features of the products (organic ingredients, ethically sourced, etc.) instead of focusing on the benefits for my target customer (reducing frizz, promoting healthy hair growth, saving time in their already busy routines). My messaging wasn't connecting to their desires. I completely reworked my website copy & social media posts to speak directly to the challenges my ideal client was facing, highlighting the transformations my products could offer. I also started creating video content demonstrating real-life application, focusing on how the products could simplify their hair care routine. It was a painful but valuable lesson, & it led me to completely revamp my approach, which ultimately contributed to its later success. Mindset & Action: The Dynamic Duo This story shows just how important Mindset truly is. As Lisa Nichols says, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer." This reflects the growth mindset that’s essential for navigating the ups & downs of entrepreneurship. It’s not enough to just know this; we need consistent action . From Reaction to Strategic Action: Streamlining Your Systems I remember a time when I was so overwhelmed, I felt like I was constantly putting out fires, just like those chaotic mornings when the kids are running wild & the dogs are... well, being dogs. It was exhausting. That's when I realised something had to change. I needed to move from reacting to strategically planning. This isn’t just about time management; it’s a complete shift in perspective, a moment of taking radical personal responsibility that completely transformed how I approached my business. For example, instead of frantically posting on social media whenever I had a spare moment, I started using a scheduling tool & batch-creating my content. I also implemented a simple project management system (Trello is my go-to!) to keep track of all my tasks & deadlines. This one small change freed up so much mental space & allowed me to be more strategic with my marketing. Even now, with four kids, a PhD, & running multiple businesses, I'm still learning, tweaking my systems, & finding new ways to integrate AI to create more space & focus. Trust me, it's a journey, not a destination! You're Not Alone: Finding Your Tribe in the Chaos I know it can feel lonely out there, especially when you’re juggling the demands of motherhood, family, business, & maybe even a PhD or two. Trust me, I get it! It's easy to get caught in the comparison trap, to feel like you're the only one navigating this particular brand of beautiful chaos. But you're not. There's a whole tribe of us out here, figuring it out together, one strategically placed dog puddle at a time. So, what’s one tiny thing you can do today to shift your perspective, to find the funny in your own flourish, to take ownership of your unique entrepreneurial journey? Here are a few ideas: Brain Dump & Prioritize (The Juggler's Secret Weapon): Grab a notebook (or even the back of an envelope – we’re all about practical here!) & write down absolutely everything swirling in your head – business tasks, school deadlines, grocery lists, the works. Then, circle just one thing – your Most Important Task (MIT) – to focus on today. Everything else can wait. Schedule One "Me" Moment (Your Non-Negotiable): Block out just 15 minutes in your calendar for something that refuels you – a walk, a cup of tea in silence, a quick guided meditation on the Insight Timer app. Guard this time fiercely against client calls, kiddie chaos, & puppy pandemonium. Remember, as Lisa Nichols says, "fill your own cup" first. Embrace Imperfect Action (The Done-is-Better-Than-Perfect Mantra): Send that email, publish that blog post, schedule that call – even if it's not "perfect," it's progress. Think of it like this: every small step forward moves you closer to your goals. Share your one thing or any other wins below! I'd love to hear from you. - Client Testimonials: Proven Strategies for Female Entrepreneurs
Beyond the Five Stars: How to Gather Client Stories That Truly Sell (Without Feeling Sales-y!) Let’s be totally honest for a sec, shall we? Asking for client testimonials… Does the thought of it make you feel a bit… ick? Like you’re asking for a favour at a really awkward dinner party, & you’d rather just quietly slide under the table with Cappuccino & Espresso, our resident Miniature Pinschers, hoping no one notices? You’re not alone! So many of us incredible female entrepreneurs, especially when we’re juggling motherhood, a PhD, & trying to, you know, actually run the business, find this part a bit cringey. And honestly? Sometimes, even with a great system in place, it still feels a little awkward! It's a process, & definitely not about perfection. But what if I told you that those client kudos, those little nuggets of praise, could be transformed into something far more potent? What if they could become your most powerful, most authentic, & – dare I say it – most ethical* way to attract your dream clients & genuinely 'sell' your services without ever feeling pushy or sales-y? Ethical? Well, consider this… While a direct sales pitch might feel like shouting at someone, a client story is like a friend whispering, "Hey, I tried this, & it changed everything." It’s less about hype & more about social proof from someone who’s been there, making it a truly compelling method! In fact, studies show that 92% of people trust recommendations from others, even if they don’t know them, over direct advertising. Because here’s the thing: testimonials aren’t just ‘nice-to-haves’ to sprinkle on your website like hundreds & thousands on a cupcake. When gathered & shared thoughtfully, they become compelling narratives of transformation. They build trust, showcase your true impact, & speak directly to the hearts of the people you’re meant to serve. It’s all about developing that authentic connection & showcasing the real value you bring, a core part of how we approach marketing here at Femmeprenista. Why a Story Packs More Punch Than a Star Rating Think about it. A simple "She's great!" is lovely, but does it really move anyone to action? Does it paint a picture? Not really. But a story… a story is different. When a client shares their journey – where they were struggling before they found you, the ‘aha!’ moments they had working with you, & the tangible, life-altering results they’ve achieved – that’s pure gold. Here’s why these ‘story-driven’ testimonials are absolute game-changers: They Build Deep Trust & Connection: In a world full of noise, authentic stories cut through. They allow potential clients to see themselves in someone else’s success, fostering that crucial Know, Like, & Trust factor. It’s like having a trusted friend vouch for you. I remember early on in one of my first ventures, long before Femmeprenista, when I was a young mum trying to get Nisbett & George off the ground after that E-Factor competition at uni. One heartfelt email from a customer, detailing how our product had genuinely solved a problem for her, was more valuable than any generic praise. It gave me confidence, & it clearly resonated with others. They Showcase Real Transformation (The Head & The Heart!): A great testimonial doesn't just list features; it highlights both the tangible outcomes (e.g., "I doubled my income," "I finally launched my course") & the equally important emotional shifts ("I felt so overwhelmed, & now I feel clear & confident," "I’ve got my spark back!"). This holistic picture is what truly resonates. They Speak Your Ideal Client’s Language: When a past client articulates their journey, they’re often using the exact words & describing the exact pain points that your ideal future client is experiencing right now. It’s incredibly powerful. They Reflect Your Brand’s Integrity: Ethically gathered, genuine stories of transformation are a testament to your commitment & the real impact you make. They show you’re not just about the sale; you’re about the result & the relationship. This aligns perfectly with taking personal responsibility for the value you deliver. The Art of Asking: Ethical & Effective Strategies for Unearthing Testimonial Gold Okay, so we know why these stories are amazing. But how do we actually get them without feeling like we’re extracting teeth? It’s about being strategic, empathetic, & making it super easy for your clients. 1. Timing is Everything, Darling! Don’t just randomly fire off requests. Ask when the positive feelings & results are at their peak: After a Big Win: Did your client just hit a major milestone thanks to your work together? Perfect time! At the End of a Programme/Project: When they’ve completed their journey with you & can see the full arc of their transformation. During a Positive Check-in: If they spontaneously share a win or express gratitude, that’s a beautiful opening. I’ve learned this the hard way! I remember, in the early days of Femmeprenista, launching a new offer with high hopes. I sent out a generic testimonial request a few weeks later, & the response was… crickets. Looking back, I realised I’d completely missed the mark on timing! It wasn't long after their initial purchase, so clients hadn’t yet experienced the full transformation, plus the request was so impersonal! In my corporate days, I approached feedback very differently. For instance, at Apple, feedback was often a very structured, formal affair, which felt very different from the close relationships you foster in your own business. But in our own businesses, we have the chance to make it much more organic & human, which is why I'm so passionate about a story driven approach! 2. Make the "Ask" a Joy, Not a Chore How you ask matters just as much as when. Be Genuinely Appreciative: Express your gratitude for their trust & their willingness to share. Focus on Their Story: Frame it as an opportunity for them to celebrate their journey & inspire others. It’s not about you needing a testimonial; it’s about their amazing transformation being shared. Make it Easy-Peasy: No one has time for complicated. Offer different ways for them to share – a quick form, a voice note they can record on their phone, or even a brief video call if they’re up for it. The easier you make it, the better the response. You might even suggest a very simple system where they can drop their thoughts into a shared document when inspiration strikes. 3. Guiding Questions to Spark Those Transformation Stories (Without Putting Words in Their Mouth!) The magic is in asking the right questions. You want to gently guide them to share the narrative, not just a few bland sentences. Think of it like helping them craft the story of their own success. Here are some prompts I’ve found really helpful: "Before we started working together, what was the biggest challenge or frustration you were facing in relation to ?" "What was a specific 'aha!' or lightbulb moment you experienced during our time together, & what changed for you after that?" "Could you share 1-2 specific, tangible results you've achieved since we started working together? (e.g., increase in clients, new skill learned, time saved)" "Beyond the tangible results, how do you feel differently now compared to before? (e.g., more confident, less overwhelmed, more focused?)" "What would you say to someone who is feeling exactly how you were feeling, & is considering working with me/joining this programme?" "Was there anything that surprised you about the process or the results?" Notice these questions are open-ended. They invite reflection & storytelling. They encourage your client to think about their journey, tapping into both the logical results & the crucial emotional shifts, which is so important for cultivating that deep clarity & strong sense of self. I remember a client I worked with who was initially quite reserved. When I sent her these kinds of guiding questions, she came back with the most incredibly moving & detailed story of her transformation. She later told me that the process of writing it all down actually helped her fully realise how far she’d come. That’s the power of this – it can be a gift for them too! Turning Testimonial Gold into Marketing Magic (That Feels Good!) Once you have these incredible stories, how do you use them ethically & effectively to genuinely attract more of your dream clients? Showcase Them Everywhere (Tastefully!): Your website (a dedicated page & sprinkled on relevant service pages), sales pages, social media posts, case studies, proposals, even in your email signature. Mix Up the Formats: Don't just stick to text. Video testimonials are incredibly powerful for building connection. Audio snippets can be great for social media or podcasts. Turn longer stories into compelling case studies that detail the journey. Speak to Your Different Avatars: For Foundation Builders (our amazing Chloes just starting out!), even one or two powerful stories can be the social proof they need to build that initial credibility & attract their first precious clients. It shows what’s possible, even when you're new. Spark can be a great next step if you’re in this phase & want to lay those strong foundations. For our Scaling Leaders (the Amys who are ready to soar!), these nuanced, transformative stories are essential for reinforcing their premium positioning, attracting higher-calibre clients, & standing out in a crowded market. If you're looking to scale sustainably & attract those dream premium clients, our Momentum is designed for exactly that. Always Prioritise Transparency & Integrity: This is non-negotiable. Get Clear Permission: Always, always ask for explicit permission to use their words, name, & (if applicable) photo/video. Explain where & how you intend to use it. Editing with Care: It's okay to edit for brevity or clarity (e.g., fixing a typo, cutting a long ramble), but never change the original meaning or sentiment. If you make significant edits, it's good practice to let them review it. Own Your Impact: This is about personal responsibility. Showcasing these stories is about reflecting the true impact you’ve had. It’s not about hype; it's about authentic results. To make it all easier for you to navigate the process, why not try to integrate AI tools into it? By using AI tools like Otter.ai for transcription or Descript for editing & summarization, you’ll find it easier to create great testimonial snippets, & really make it something for you to celebrate & for your audience to celebrate. What does an effective testimonial even look like? Well, I remember Sarah, a Momentum client, who, after working with me, described her journey like this: "Before Femmeprenista, I felt like I was throwing spaghetti at the wall, hoping something would stick. Now, I have a clear marketing strategy that attracts the right clients, & I've doubled my income in six months! More importantly, I feel confident and in control of my business." What made this so effective? It clearly articulated the 'before' and 'after,' highlighting both the tangible results and the emotional transformation. It also showed that my approach wasn’t just about random tactics; it was about building a solid, sustainable strategy. Ultimately, gathering & sharing these transformative client stories goes far beyond a simple marketing tactic. It becomes a cornerstone of your authentic marketing approach, helping you build a brand that people genuinely connect with, trust, & want to be a part of. It’s about fostering genuine connections & demonstrating the true value you bring to the world, which is central to the Femmeprenista philosophy of building a business that truly flourishes, which is what our entire How We Work is designed to help you achieve. So, my lovely, I encourage you to step away from any lingering awkwardness around asking for feedback. Instead, embrace the opportunity to co-create powerful narratives of transformation with your clients. These stories are a gift – to them, to you, & to all the future clients you’re destined to help. What’s one small change you can make to your testimonial gathering process this week? I’d love to hear! - Diminutive Nicknames: Reclaim Power as Women Entrepreneurs
"Sweetie," "Honey," or "Boss Lady"? Reclaiming Your Power Over Diminutive Nicknames Ever been called "sweetie" or "honey" in a business setting & it just… rubbed you the wrong way? It’s like a tiny paper cut, isn't it? Seemingly insignificant, but annoying & distracting. Diminutive nicknames, while perhaps intended as harmless, can undermine our authority in professional settings. This is especially true for women entrepreneurs who are building their businesses & establishing themselves as leaders. I think back to when I was just starting out, juggling Cocoista Ltd. alongside the demands of motherhood. There were days when I felt like I was constantly putting out fires – from supplier issues to navigating the ever-changing landscape of social media marketing – only to be called “sweetie” by a potential collaborator, as if all that effort and expertise were somehow less valuable because I was a woman. The Power of Language: Why Words Matter in Business & How They Impact Female Entrepreneurs My ongoing PhD research into women's entrepreneurship constantly reinforces one powerful truth: words matter. They shape perceptions, influence behavior, & can trigger a whole range of emotions. In the business arena, where we're striving to be taken seriously, seen as equals, & command the respect we deserve, the language used to address us becomes especially crucial. I think back to a meeting with a potential investor. I had just delivered what I thought was a killer presentation – pouring my heart & soul, not to mention hours of research, into it – when he patted me on the arm & said, "Well done, sweetheart." Honestly, in that moment, all the confidence I’d built presenting my brilliant ideas just… deflated. There have been so many times in my own journey, especially in those early corporate roles, where I struggled to assert myself. I’d shrink back, let the nickname slide, and then internally berate myself for not speaking up. It chipped away at my confidence & made me question my own worth. I felt so small, like all that hard work had been reduced to a patronizing pat & a diminutive nickname. It felt like my expertise & authority, carefully cultivated over years of experience, were being dismissed. Decoding the Diminutive: Why These Nicknames Undermine Women Business Owners Now, I'm not saying everyone who uses these terms is intentionally trying to be dismissive. Sometimes it’s just habit, a cultural norm, or even a misguided attempt at friendliness. But the impact, regardless of intent, can still be disempowering. It creates this subtle shift in the power dynamic, implying a level of familiarity that hasn't been earned &, more importantly, isn’t appropriate in a professional setting. It can even subtly reinforce unconscious biases, suggesting women are somehow less competent or less deserving of respect. Isn't that crazy? Think about it – would anyone call Richard Branson "cupcake" or Elon Musk "honeybun" during a board meeting? Probably not. So why is it often considered acceptable to address women in this way? It’s a double standard, plain & simple, & one we need to actively address. The frustration is similar to when you're up at 3am with a teething baby, desperately trying to soothe them while simultaneously worrying about that looming deadline for a client project. The mental load is real, the exhaustion is profound, & then to be called "honey" or "sweetie" in a professional context just adds another layer of exasperation, doesn't it? It diminishes the real effort and sacrifices involved. Reclaiming Our Power: Strategies for Handling Diminutive Nicknames as Female Entrepreneurs So, what's a driven, focused female entrepreneur to do? First, take a deep breath. Remember, it's not about getting angry or overly confrontational (though a well-placed raised eyebrow can work wonders!). It’s about owning your power & redirecting the interaction with grace &, when necessary, a touch of strategic sass. Here are a few tactics I've found helpful: The Polite Redirect: A simple, "I prefer to be called " delivered with a warm smile can be surprisingly effective. It’s direct, professional, & puts the responsibility back on the other person to adjust their language. The Humorous Deflection: If you're feeling witty, a lighthearted "While I appreciate the term of endearment, in a business context, I prefer ." This can diffuse the situation while still making your point clear. The Direct Address: For repeat offenders or situations where the nickname feels particularly dismissive, a more direct "I'd appreciate it if you would address me by my name/title in professional settings" can set a firm boundary. This is like that “I need help NOW, not when it suits you” conversation I had with my mum - sometimes being direct is the kindest thing, for both of you. The Silent Treatment (with a twist): Sometimes, the most powerful response is no response at all. Simply continue the conversation as if the nickname wasn't used, addressing them by their name or title. Maintain eye contact, keep your body language open & engaged, and focus on the content of the discussion, not the distracting label. This isn't about being passive-aggressive. It's about embodying your “Big Deal Energy,” as Adrienne Weimer 1 would say, and confidently leading the interaction. Remember that NLP principle from Sue Knight 1: “The meaning of your communication is the response you get.” Your confident, professional demeanor is the communication. Their use of a diminutive nickname is their response, reflecting their perception, not your worth. By not reacting to the nickname, you're subtly yet powerfully signaling that you expect to be treated with respect. This subtly reinforces the professional dynamic and often leads them to adjust their language without further prompting. I can vividly remember having to use a version of this silent treatment with a potential investor. Every other sentence, he’d pepper in a “sweetheart” or “darling.” It was incredibly distracting, & honestly, it made me feel like he wasn't taking me or my business seriously. So, I took a deep breath, focused on the business discussion, & addressed him formally by his name & title. By the end of the meeting, guess what? No more nicknames. It really can be that simple. Sometimes, the most powerful communication is the message you don't verbalize. Owning Your "Boss" Status: A Mindset Shift for Female Founders Ultimately, handling these microaggressions is about more than just correcting someone’s language; it’s about an internal shift, about cultivating a powerful mindset that radiates confidence & commands respect. It's about embodying that "Big Deal Energy" Adrienne Weimer 1 talks about – owning your expertise, your value, & your right to be treated as the professional you are. Remember how my dad fiercely advocated for me when teachers tried to silence me? That lesson, though learned young, still resonates: find your voice, use your voice, & don't let anyone diminish it. I think about when I first started at University of Birmingham, before I found my true fit at UEL. The environment wasn't right for me, and I struggled to find my voice. I constantly felt like I was playing catch-up. That experience showed me the power of the right environment & how vital it is to have a support system that believes in you. This also influenced my stance on prioritizing wellbeing – now, when I feel that familiar overwhelm creeping in, I remind myself that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for showing up as the “Boss Lady” I’m meant to be. It’s about respecting myself & my clients equally. Remember, you are the captain of your ship. You are building an empire. Own your power, command your respect, & let your actions & words reflect the "Boss" you truly are. Ready to connect with other ambitious female entrepreneurs who get it? - Focus for Female Entrepreneurs: Reclaim Time & Thrive
The Myth of Quiet Time (and How Female Entrepreneurs Can Actually Get Stuff Done) Alright, let's talk about "quiet time." You know, that mythical period where the world falls silent, the to-do list magically shrinks, & you, dear entrepreneur, finally get to focus on building your empire? Yeah, me neither. Especially not for Foundation Builders juggling the early stages of their business. Especially not with four kids, two miniature pinchers who think bouncing off walls is an Olympic sport, & a PhD research paper staring me down. Sound familiar? Thought so! As female entrepreneurs, the phrase “quiet time” is often met with a slightly hysterical, slightly desperate laugh. We picture it, right? A steaming cuppa, a pristine desk, the gentle hum of productivity… then BAM! Reality hits. The baby's discovered the joys of emptying the entire contents of the kitchen cupboards (again), your teenager needs a lift to a last-minute party across town, & one of the dogs decides it's the perfect moment to practice her opera singing (Espresso, I'm looking at you!). Suddenly, that peaceful vision looks more like a scene from a comedy sketch than a productive work session. A 2022 study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor found that women entrepreneurs with children under six cite time management as their biggest challenge. See? It's not just you. It's a universal juggle. So, what's a driven, ambitious woman to do? Throw in the towel & surrender to the chaos? Absolutely not! We're Femmeprenistas; we thrive in the beautiful mess. But we also need to get things done. We need to find our focus amidst the whirlwind. The key is to redefine "quiet" & reclaim moments of productivity within the reality of our wonderfully full lives. It’s about working smarter, not harder, & designing our businesses to fit the lives we actually live. Redefining “Quiet”: It’s About Focus, Not Silence Let’s be honest: true silence is a rare commodity for most of us. I remember when my youngest was a newborn, even a trip to the loo felt like a strategic military operation. "Quiet time" isn't about the absence of noise; it's about the presence of focus. It's a deliberate choice. It's about training your brain, almost like a muscle, to zero in on the task at hand, even when "Baby Shark" is playing on repeat in the background. Honestly, my own journey, especially juggling four kids and a PhD, has shown me that while the path might be slower or different, taking ownership of my focus is non-negotiable. Looking back, when I first started my business, one of my biggest fears was that I'd never find the time to actually do the work, with all the demands of motherhood. It felt like an impossible equation. I vividly recall one particularly overwhelming afternoon, with a screaming baby, a pile of laundry the size of Mount Everest, and a looming client deadline, thinking, "How am I supposed to do this?" There were days I just wanted to curl up in a ball and give up. But then I'd remember my "why"—the vision of building a business that allowed me to be both a present mum & a successful entrepreneur—& that would fuel me to keep going, one small step at a time. I remember once trying to record a training video for my "Launch Programme" on creating a compelling brand story, with Espresso, our hyperactive miniature pinscher, convinced my office chair was her personal agility course. Every time I hit record, she'd launch into a new acrobatic routine, culminating in a dramatic leap onto my lap just as I was delivering a key point about the importance of authenticity! It was meant to be a serious video about "Flair" - our approach to marketing - but it turned into a blooper reel. It's really funny, because I must have re-recorded that intro a dozen times! Eventually, I realised I had two choices: either wait for the mythical moment of perfect silence (which would never come) or accept the chaos & find my focus within it. I chose the latter. I incorporated Espresso's antics into the intro, making it a relatable, humorous start to the training. The feedback I received was fantastic; many women commented on how much they appreciated the realness & could relate to the juggle. Reflections informed by my ongoing PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship often highlight the importance of creating systems that accommodate, not fight against, the realities of family life. Practical Strategies for the Beautifully Chaotic Life So, how do we create these pockets of productivity? Here are a few "Juggler's Shortcuts" that have helped me (and countless other women in our community) reclaim our focus & actually get things done: • • Time Blocking with a Twist: We all know about time blocking, right? But for female entrepreneurs, it needs a little adaptation. Schedule your work blocks around your children's routines & factor in buffer time for the inevitable interruptions. For example, instead of a rigid 9-5, I might have a 9-10am block for focused work while the baby naps, then a shorter afternoon block after school pick-up, dedicated to emails and social media. • • Don't be afraid to involve the kids! My six-year-old loves to "work" alongside me, drawing pictures while I write or "helping" me sort through emails (which mostly involves her pressing random keys on my keyboard, but hey, it keeps her occupied). • • Try setting up a dedicated "workstation" for them next to yours, with age-appropriate activities. This could be coloring books, puzzles, building blocks – anything that keeps them engaged and allows you to get some focused work done. • • The Power of the Pomodoro: The Pomodoro Technique (25-minute work sprints followed by short breaks) is a lifesaver for fragmented focus. Use a timer app like "Focus To-Do" or even the timer on your phone. Set it for 25 minutes of completely focused work on one task. Then, take a 5-minute break. Every four "pomodoros", take a longer 15-20 minute break. Even 15 minutes of dedicated work on a specific task can move the needle. & those short breaks? Perfect for a quick cuddle with the baby, a mini dance party with the toddler, or throwing the ball for Espresso before diving back in. • • Outsource & Automate: Where possible, outsource or automate tasks that drain your time & energy. This could be anything from hiring a virtual assistant for admin tasks (check out platforms like Upwork or Fancy Hands) to using scheduling tools like Calendly or Acuity to streamline appointments. For example, a friend of mine, a successful health coach, outsourced her social media management to a VA, freeing up her time to focus on client work & creating new programs. It was a game-changer for her business & her wellbeing. Consider email marketing automation platforms like Mailchimp or ConvertKit to nurture your leads while you focus on other areas of your business. Remember Cody Sanchez’s wisdom: "Don't build a business you have to run, build a business that pays you." This might mean investing in systems or support initially, but the long-term payoff in time and energy is invaluable. It’s a strategic investment in your freedom and sanity. • • Embrace Imperfection (and Laugh at the Chaos): Things will go wrong. Interruptions will happen. The castor oil will inevitably end up on the carpet (again). Learn to laugh at the chaos & embrace the imperfection. Remember Sue Knight's powerful NLP principle: "There is no failure, only feedback." Every "failed" attempt at focused work is an opportunity to learn & adapt. Perhaps the schedule needs tweaking, the boundaries need reinforcing, or the toddler needs a new, less messy, activity. • • Prioritize Wellbeing (You Can't Pour From an Empty Cup): As Lisa Nichols reminds us, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows." This isn't selfish; it's essential. Make time for the things that energize you, whether it's a quick yoga session, a walk in nature with Cappuccino (my calmer dog—a rare moment of peace!), or simply five minutes of quiet reflection with a cuppa (while it’s still hot!). It might be helpful to refer to our Business Flourish Framework for a more holistic approach to building a business that energises rather than drains you. From Surviving to Thriving: It's About Integration, Not Isolation The entrepreneurial journey, especially as a mum, can sometimes feel like a solo mission. It's easy to get caught up in the daily juggle & lose sight of the bigger picture. That’s why community is so important. It’s the beginning of a powerful shift from surviving to thriving. For more support & guidance on building a business that truly works for your life, explore all our services at Femmeprenista. - 90 Days Online Business: Thrive as a Femmeprenista [Guide]
Beyond the Checklist: Your First 90 Days to a Thriving Online Business – A Femmeprenista's Guide to Smart Starts & Sustainable Momentum Right, let’s have a proper chat. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re standing at the thrilling, slightly terrifying, & often utterly overwhelming starting line of your online business journey. You’ve got the passion, the idea that keeps you awake at night (in a good way, mostly!), & probably a to-do list that’s longer than your arm & possibly growing by the hour. Sound familiar? Thought so! Let's work smarter and kickstart your online venture. Especially if you’re a mum, like me, juggling the beautiful chaos of family life – the school runs, the never-ending snack requests, the sudden chorus of "Mummy, can you just...?" right when you’re trying to concentrate – the thought of launching & growing a business can feel like preparing to climb Everest in your PJs. Ever tried to finalise a pitch while your toddler’s requesting their pottery cup from school?! Many new entrepreneurs, particularly Foundation Builders, get caught in a whirlwind of frantic activity, ticking off generic checklist items without a real sense of direction or, crucially, seeing tangible results. It’s exhausting, & honestly, it’s not the smartest way to build something truly sustainable. But what if those initial months weren't about a mad dash to do everything , but about strategically laying an intentional, solid foundation? What if it was about smart, proactive action rooted in personal responsibility, designed to build momentum that genuinely lasts, & a business that fits your life, not the other way around? Before we dive into how to make those initial months count, if you're curious about the wider philosophy that shapes everything we do here at Femmeprenista, you might want to explore our approach to Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose . It’s all about building a business that truly flourishes, on your terms. Ditching the Hustle: Why an Intentional Foundation is Your Secret Weapon I’ve been there. In my early entrepreneurial days, juggling a new baby & my first proper business venture, Nisbett & George (which I co-founded after a "now or never" moment in my final year at UEL), the temptation to just do more was immense. More hours, more tasks, more everything. It’s a common trap. We see the ‘hustle culture’ glorified everywhere & think that’s the only way. But let me tell you, especially as a mother, frantic hustle is a fast track to burnout, not sustainable success. I remember one particularly frazzled week back then, trying to finalise a crucial pitch while my eldest was teething & Espresso, our hyperactive Miniature Pinscher puppy, decided my laptop cord was the ultimate chew toy! I was fuelled by caffeine & sheer willpower, convinced that if I just pushed harder, success would magically appear. It didn't. What appeared was exhaustion & the dawning realisation that there had to be a better way. Those initial months are precious. Instead of a frantic race, I want you to see this period as a time for intentional foundation-laying. It’s about consciously deciding what truly matters for long-term, sustainable success & importantly, how your business can integrate with your life, especially life as a mum. It's about creating a system that will actually help us! This isn't about following a generic checklist someone else wrote; it’s about taking personal responsibility for making smart choices that build your business on your terms. It’s about working smarter, not just harder – a lesson I’ve learned & relearned through my corporate experiences, my MBA, & now, juggling four children, two energetic Miniature Pinschers (Cappuccino, the chilled mum, & Espresso, her hyperactive daughter who often provides a live soundtrack to my work-from-home days!), & my PhD research. Honestly, as someone who juggles PhD research with a toddler trying to redecorate the house with my lipstick, plus a recent AI experiment that sucked up three hours & spat out absolute gibberish, trust me, if there's a smart shortcut that doesn't compromise quality, I'm all for it! Milestones That Matter: The Femmeprenista 'Critical Few' for Your First 90 Days One of the biggest overwhelm culprits for Foundation Builders is the sheer volume of things you could do. That endless to-do list? Let’s be honest, it’s more likely to lead to procrastination than progress. So, instead, we focus on what I call the 'Critical Few' – 3 to 4 non-negotiable milestones for your first 90 days. These are designed to build your core confidence, bring in those crucial first bits of income, & tackle those key pain points of uncertainty & inconsistent cash flow head-on. I get it. The initial stages can feel lonely, right? Especially when you're juggling so much. Share one win this week below! Our entire approach to business building here at Femmeprenista, including these vital first 90 days, is rooted in our Business Flourish Framework, which ensures you're nurturing all aspects of a thriving venture from the get-go. You can How We Work / Business Flourish Framework to understand more about this holistic system. Here’s what truly matters in those initial months: Crystal Clear Clarity on Your Offer & Initial Validation: Before you pour energy into fancy websites or complex marketing, you need absolute clarity on what you’re offering, who it’s for, & the transformation it provides. This isn't about achieving perfection, but about getting a solid enough understanding to start testing it in the real world. This means talking to potential clients, getting feedback, & making those first brave steps to validate that people actually want ( & will pay for!) what you have. This clarity is fundamental; it’s sharpening your mindset and business vision & understanding your unique space in the market. Making Those First Crucial Sales Through Authentic Connection: Forget complicated funnels for now. Your mission is to make your first few sales by building genuine connections. This could be through your existing network, engaging authentically on social media, or even one-to-one outreach. It's about showcasing your unique value & personality, letting your passion shine through, & learning how to articulate what you do in a way that resonates. These early sales are pure gold – not just for the income, but for the immense confidence boost they provide. Setting Up Simple, Essential Systems: Now, when I say systems, please don’t panic! I’m not talking about complex software that requires a PhD to operate. I mean the absolute basics to keep you sane & professional from day one: A simple way to schedule calls An easy method for taking payments A basic way to track your income & expenses A straightforward process for welcoming new clients These simple structures create a sense of order & efficiency, which is vital when you’re already juggling so much. For those who find the idea of setting up even a basic online presence & systems daunting & just want it done, our Ready-to-Launch Kit can be a real game-changer, getting you set up professionally in about 60 days if you'd rather shortcut the setup. Embedding Your 'CEO Mindset' & Resilience from Day One Let me be really straight with you: your mindset is everything . Those first 90 days are as much about building your entrepreneurial resilience & cultivating a robust CEO mindset as they are about building any business infrastructure. You’re not just launching a business; you’re stepping into a new version of yourself. This means taking radical personal responsibility for your journey. It means understanding that setbacks are not failures; they are feedback, learning opportunities. As NLP teaches, "There is no failure, only feedback." One simple way I stayed on track and built an unstoppable mindset was to: Write out my goals every morning (reaffirming my intentions) Find one thing to be grateful for, even when the toddler has covered the house in castor oil (celebrating the small wins) Say one kind thing to myself (building my inner belief) I remember during my MBA, tackling incredibly demanding projects while my second daughter was just a baby. There were moments of intense self-doubt, moments I questioned if I could actually do it all - I even felt guilty taking time for myself to shower. But I learned that focusing on what I could control, owning my choices, & adapting my approach was far more powerful than dwelling on the difficulties. It's about developing that inner knowing that you can navigate challenges, even when things feel tough. You might twist your ankle on this entrepreneurial path, as the saying goes, but the difference is, you get back up again, learn from it, & keep moving. This period is about embedding that commitment to iterative learning & proactively navigating the inevitable waves of self-doubt that hit every single entrepreneur. Smart Systems for Sanity & Early Scale (Hello, Flow & a Touch of AI Magic!) Remember those simple, essential systems we talked about? They are your secret weapon for maintaining sanity & creating the space for early scale, especially when you're a mum trying to carve out productive work hours amidst the delightful whirlwind of family life. Think minimalist but effective: a straightforward scheduling tool so you’re not playing endless email ping-pong, a simple payment processor, & perhaps even a basic content planning system so you’re not staring at a blank screen every week. & here’s where it gets really exciting for busy entrepreneurs: introducing a little bit of smart automation. Even at this early stage, basic & accessible AI tools can be your best friend. Imagine using AI to help with initial market research, brainstorm content ideas, or even draft initial outlines for your blog posts or social media. For instance, tools like ChatGPT can help summarise lengthy competitor reports in minutes, saving you hours of research. I used it to refine my blog outlines with keywords and it made a tangible difference in the traction I was getting. This isn't about replacing your unique voice or genius; it’s about strategically delegating routine tasks to free up your precious time & mental energy. This allows you to focus on what only you can do – connecting with clients, refining your offer, & steering your business. It’s about working smarter, not just harder, ensuring your business energises you rather than drains you, preserving that vital energy for your family & your own well-being, even amidst the beautiful chaos. Progress Over Perfection: Your 90-Day Launchpad for Growth One of the biggest hurdles for Foundation Builders is the quest for perfection. That feeling that everything has to be absolutely flawless before you can put it out into the world? It’s a recipe for procrastination & staying stuck. The goal of these first 90 days is not to achieve some unattainable ideal of a perfect business. It’s to build a solid launchpad for ongoing growth through consistent, smart action. It’s about embracing iteration – putting something out there, getting feedback, tweaking it, & trying again. Every "mistake" is a lesson, every piece of feedback a gift. As Dr. Steve Peters said, "Don’t be disheartened if you have setbacks; instead learn from them." When I was studying fashion design, we didn't create a masterpiece on the first try. It was a process of sketching, draping, sewing, fitting, & refining. Business is no different. Focus on making progress, however small, every single day. Celebrate those small wins. Set a sustainable pace that fuels your long-term vision rather than leading to early burnout. These 90 days are about building momentum, confidence, & a business that can truly go the distance, all while you navigate the incredible journey of motherhood. So, are you ready to move beyond the overwhelming checklist & step into your first 90 days with intention, strategy, & a healthy dose of smart action? You’ve got this. - Strategic Business Collaborations Women: Grow Your Business
The Power of Partnerships: How Collaboration Can Catapult Your Business Growth Okay, let's talk collaborations. I get it – the word itself can conjure up images of awkward networking events & forced small talk, maybe even flashbacks to those dreaded school assemblies where you're just trying to blend in. But what I want to share with you today goes way beyond that. This is about strategic collaborations – the kind that can truly amplify your visibility, expand your market reach, & create those exciting "OMG, how did that even happen?!" opportunities. As a mum juggling four kids, a PhD, and running my own business (all while trying to keep our two Miniature Pinschers from turning the house into a chew-toy graveyard), I really understand the need to make every minute count. Believe me, there are days when "business casual" means one eyeliner on because the toddler decided the dog's water bowl was the perfect place for a splash party, right before a school run. Time is precious, energy is finite, and as female entrepreneurs, we need strategies that work smarter , not just harder. And sometimes, “smarter” means knowing when to ask for help & finding the right people to share the load. Strategic collaboration is that "secret weapon." It's about building your own business dream team – imagine your own personal Justice League, but for entrepreneurs – where everyone brings their unique superpowers to the table. Leveraging each other's strengths, filling in those gaps (like when Espresso, the puppy, decides to "help" with my paperwork by shredding it into confetti), and creating a combined force that's greater than the sum of its parts. This is especially important for those of us who, like me, don't always have extensive family support nearby – my own mum still works full time, you know, it’s a different reality for our generation. Sharing the load, even if it's just brainstorming with someone who gets the daily juggle, can be a game-changer. Speaking of sharing – what's one area where you could really use a collaborative boost right now? Drop it in the comments below. 👇 Beyond Networking: Finding Your Synergistic Soulmates Strategic collaboration isn't about collecting business cards at events. It’s not about forced pleasantries over lukewarm coffee when you’d rather be home with a proper cuppa & catching up on that Netflix series everyone's talking about (though, honestly, who has time for that when you're building a business and raising humans?). It's about identifying those synergistic partnerships that genuinely align with your vision & values. It's about finding those business soulmates who not only understand where you're going but also “get” the messy middle – the doubts, the daily struggles, the "I-just-cleaned-yogurt-off-the-ceiling" kind of moments. It’s about finding your tribe, those who cheer you on & offer support when the rollercoaster of entrepreneurship takes a dip. We all need that, especially as women navigating this often-lonely journey, often with limited local family support (like me!), while society expects us to be super-mum and a business mogul. When I first launched Nisbett & George (my early post-uni venture, which, ironically, taught me a lot about partnership dynamics!), I was determined to do everything myself. Classic Foundation Builder mistake! Designing the website, crafting the marketing messages, figuring out tech (which, let’s be honest, was not my forte) – I was drowning in to-dos, fueled by that "I can do it all" mentality. Total Little Red Hen moment. Remember that fable? She does all the work, and then everyone wants a piece of the pie. That's how it felt, constantly asking for help (the right kind of help, at the right time ), and mostly hearing crickets. It wasn't until I started connecting with other female entrepreneurs, those who understood the "one eyeliner on" reality of balancing business with motherhood, the "Dora the Explorer soundtrack" of working from home, and the sheer panic of realizing you have a client call in five minutes & the baby has just decided to explore the joys of finger painting with… well, anything within reach… that things started to shift. Finding my tribe at university (UEL – such a better fit than my first uni) was a turning point in my life, & the same principle applies to business. Community is everything . One incredibly helpful collaboration was finding a web designer who not only understood my brand vision but also the unique challenges of building an online business while navigating the joys (and let’s be honest, the utter chaos) of motherhood. She understood the mental load, the interrupted work flows, the sudden need to pause a strategic planning session because your teenage daughter needs help deciphering the latest social media drama (seriously, what is a "finsta" anyway?). She got it. This partnership freed up so much time & energy – time I could then spend with the kids, actually being present instead of constantly feeling pulled in a million directions, or, you know, finally finishing that chapter of my PhD research. My research, by the way, focuses on Black female entrepreneurship & often highlights how crucial these supportive networks and collaborations are for navigating the unique challenges we face, like overcoming limiting beliefs about our worth or accessing funding in a system that's not always designed for us . This isn't just about business; it's about building a life you genuinely love. That's the real magic of finding your collaborative soulmate, isn't it? Someone who understands your WHY, respects your values, & helps you shine brighter. Plus, let's be real, it’s a lot more fun building a business with a supportive crew than trying to do it all alone in your kitchen, with a half-eaten bowl of cereal and a pile of laundry staring you down. Identifying the Right Partners: A Strategic Approach So, how do you find these magical collaborations? Here's a framework, inspired by my own experiences & insights from my ongoing PhD research on Black female entrepreneurship, to guide you in finding the perfect partners for your business journey: Get Clear on Your Vision & Values: What’s the big WHY behind your business (thanks, Simon Sinek!)? Where do you want to be in five years? What values drive you? Knowing your 'north star' will attract collaborators who resonate with your long-term vision & the impact you want to create. This is especially crucial for us as women. We often start businesses not just for profit, but for purpose, for flexibility, for the freedom to create a life that truly aligns with our values. Identify Your Gaps & Leverage Your Strengths: Where do you genuinely need support? What tasks are draining your time & energy? Are you spending hours battling Canva when you should be coaching clients? What are you amazing at? Knowing where you shine & where you could use a boost is essential for finding partners who complement your skills & fill those gaps, creating true synergy. It’s like finding that perfect missing puzzle piece. Define Your Ideal Collaborator: What skills, experience, & personality traits would your ideal collaborator bring to the table? Do you need a tech whiz who can build your dream website while you focus on crafting irresistible offers? Or a marketing guru who can help you get your message out to the world while you focus on serving your clients? Do you vibe with someone who's super organized & detail-oriented, or someone who brings that creative spark and a touch of "unhinged" energy (as my friend and fellow coach, Adrienne Weimer, would say!)? Get crystal clear. It’s like creating a dating profile for your business bestie – envision the person you’d love to work with, someone who shares your values & makes the journey fun. Network Strategically: Focus your energy on the right places. Where do your ideal collaborators hang out? Online communities? Industry events? Don't just scatter your energy; be intentional. Quality over quantity, always. Be genuinely curious about the people you meet, and share your story authentically. Remember, as Rory Sutherland says, "stories are the PDF files of human information." Your story is your magnet. Vet Potential Partners: Don't jump into partnerships based on a single conversation or social media post. Do your research. Check out their websites, read client testimonials (social proof is powerful!), and have an honest conversation about values & working styles. This is especially crucial as a Scaling Leader – you're building something significant, & protecting your brand integrity is key. Nurture the Relationship: Strong collaborations, like healthy gardens, need consistent care. Celebrate each other’s wins, brainstorm new ideas, & be genuinely supportive during the tough times. It's about building a win-win dynamic where everyone feels valued & appreciated. Reciprocity is key. Protecting Your Brand & Prioritizing Well-being Collaborations can feel scary, I know. “What if it doesn’t work? What if I end up doing all the work? What if my partner flakes?” I once agreed to collaborate with another coach on a joint webinar. We’d outlined the topics, agreed on the promotion plan, and even scheduled the webinar. Then, two days before the event, she emailed to say she had a family emergency & couldn't make it. I was panicking. Not only was I facing a potentially embarrassing situation with my audience, but I was also dealing with my own internal critic, that little voice whispering, “See, you can’t rely on anyone. You should have just done it yourself.” I felt let down, frustrated, & incredibly vulnerable. But you know what? I took a deep breath, reworked the webinar content, and delivered a solo session. It wasn't what I had planned, but it turned out to be one of my most successful webinars ever. It taught me the importance of having backup plans, the resilience of adapting to change, and, perhaps most importantly, that I could handle unexpected challenges on my own. It also highlighted the need for clear agreements and communication upfront, because sometimes, even with the best intentions, things don't go as planned. This is especially true for us as women – the "mum guilt" is real, & the pressure to be everything to everyone can be crushing. So, to protect your brand, your time, & your precious energy, keep these tips in mind as you explore collaborations: Clear Agreements: Before you start anything , have a frank discussion about roles, responsibilities, timelines, & compensation (if applicable). Put it in writing! It protects everyone involved & sets clear expectations from the start. Think of it as your collaborative prenup – not romantic, but essential! Healthy Boundaries: Collaborations should energize you, not drain you. Set clear boundaries around your time, your energy, & your scope of work. It’s okay to say no to projects that don’t align with your priorities or current capacity. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Fill your cup first. That’s what Lisa Nichols always says, and she’s right. Regular Check-ins: Schedule regular check-ins (weekly, bi-weekly, whatever works for both of you) to discuss progress, celebrate wins, & address any challenges. This prevents those "wait, what are we doing again?" moments & keeps the collaborative momentum flowing smoothly. Think of it as your collaborative pit stop – refuel, recalibrate, and get back on track. Ready to Collaborate? The Scaling Leader's Guide Strategic collaborations can be game-changers, especially for Scaling Leaders. Scaling Leaders, typically generating £1k-£10k+ per month and actively growing, are often facing new challenges related to managing increasing complexity, optimizing systems, and strategically delegating to avoid burnout. Collaborations offer a powerful way to leverage external expertise, expand market reach, and create innovative solutions to overcome these hurdles. They can also provide much-needed support and camaraderie during this exciting but demanding phase of growth. From attracting premium clients to streamlining operations , the right partnership can help you level up your business & your life. - Master Your Money Mindset for Femmeprenistas: A Guide to Freedom
Mastering Your Money Mindset: A Femmeprenista's Guide to Financial Freedom Ever feel like money's this elusive, slightly intimidating thing that dances just out of reach? Like you're chasing it, but it's always one step ahead? Trust me, darling, I've been there. There was a time, right after my third daughter was born, when the weight of bills, a less-than-ideal corporate job (let's just say my salary wasn't exactly matching the mountain of work I was doing!), and the sheer cost of everything felt crushing. I remember lying awake at night, heart pounding, wondering how we were going to make ends meet, while also trying to figure out how to pay for childcare so I could even think about going back to work. It was one of those "sliding doors" moments where I seriously questioned every decision I'd made. Honestly, juggling four kids, a PhD, and a business? Let's just say my financial journey hasn't exactly been a smooth, predictable stroll in the park. It's been more like a wild obstacle course with unexpected detours, the occasional face-plant (like the time I accidentally agreed to cater a birthday party for 50 kids – talk about a budget blowout!), and a whole lot of "how the heck am I going to make this work?" moments. But you know what? I wouldn't trade it for the world. Because through all the chaos, the sleepless nights (thanks, baby!), and the "one eyeliner on because I was too busy cleaning up a toddler-created disaster – this time it was a rogue pot of glitter –" mornings, I've learned something incredibly powerful: Your mindset about money is the key that unlocks everything. Your mindset about money is the key that unlocks everything. & that's exactly what we're diving into today. We're taking a deep dive into the core principles inspired by Morgan Housel’s brilliant book, "The Psychology of Money"—someone who really opened my eyes to the human side of finance—& exploring how they apply specifically to us ambitious female entrepreneurs, especially us mums navigating the beautiful, chaotic juggle. Because let's be honest, financial freedom isn't just about having a fat bank account. It's about so much more. It's about the freedom to spend quality time with your family, to chase your dreams without constantly stressing about the bills, to build a legacy for your children, & to create a life you absolutely adore. It's about having the resources to give them opportunities I never had & to build the kind of financial security that lets us truly enjoy life's precious moments, maybe even finally take that dream trip to Malaysia we've been researching. Picture this: us, sipping cocktails on a beach, kids splashing in the turquoise water, without a single worry about work emails or overflowing inboxes. That's the power of a money mindset aligned with your vision. Beyond the Numbers: Why Your Money Story Matters My own journey, including my research into female entrepreneurship for my PhD, has taught me that understanding your relationship with money is just as crucial as understanding your profit margins (though those are pretty important too!). My research often highlights how limiting beliefs around money can hold women back from achieving their full potential. It impacts every single decision you make in your business – from how you price your offers to how you invest in your growth. Think about it: Do you ever feel guilty about charging what you're worth? Do you find yourself constantly undercharging, even though you know your services are gold? Do you worry that achieving more financial success will just mean more work & less time for your family? It’s a common theme I see, this fear of success equating to more work & less life, something I had to unpack myself. Recently, I caught myself falling into this trap. I landed a fantastic new client, which should have been a cause for celebration. But instead of feeling excited, I felt this knot of anxiety in my stomach. Was I going to have enough time for my kids? Would I end up sacrificing my personal life for my business? I realized I was letting that old "more success, more work" story creep back in. I used the visualization technique (something I’ll share more about below) to reframe that narrative and focus on the systems I'd put in place (thanks to my MBA training!) to ensure I could handle the increased workload without sacrificing family time. It’s a constant process, this mindset work, but so worth it! These are all reflections of your money story. & if that story is filled with limiting beliefs, it's time to rewrite it, darling. Because you deserve to be financially abundant. You deserve to create a business that supports the life you dream of. For those of you who are Foundation Builders, exploring your entrepreneurial dreams and taking those first, often daunting, steps towards turning your passion into a profitable venture, this message is for you: hard work beats intelligence when it's smart work. hard work beats intelligence when it's smart work. This isn’t just about wishful thinking; it’s about taking consistent, strategic action powered by a resilient mindset. Rewriting Your Money Narrative: Practical Steps for Femmeprenistas So, how do we actually shift these limiting beliefs & step into our financial power? Here are a few practical strategies, informed by both my PhD research and my own messy, real-life experience, that might just resonate with you: Get Real About Your Money Beliefs: Get Real About Your Money Beliefs: What are the stories you tell yourself about money? Are they empowering or are they holding you back? Start by journaling about your money beliefs. Be honest. What messages did you absorb about money growing up? What are your biggest fears around money? This process can be incredibly insightful, trust me. Identify one specific limiting belief. What’s one small “psychological moonshot,” as Rory Sutherland would say, you can take today to shift just that one belief? Maybe it's reframing "I'm not good with money" to "I'm learning to manage my finances strategically." Once you identify the limiting narratives, you can start to challenge & reframe them. Try this: Visualize yourself confidently pricing your offers based on value. Feel the energy shift. Focus on Value, Not Just Price: Focus on Value, Not Just Price: One of the biggest mindset shifts I've made is to focus on the immense value I provide to my clients, not just the price tag attached to my services. How does your offer truly transform her life? Her business? Her mindset? Get crystal clear on that, darling. Write it down. Because when you truly believe in the transformation you offer, pricing becomes less about fear & more about confidence. It’s also about sustainability; if you can’t pay your bills, you can’t serve your clients long-term. What’s the real value, the lasting impact you’re providing? Focus on that, & pricing will feel more aligned. When you are certain about the value you deliver, that energy becomes magnetic & attracts your ideal clients. Build a Business That Supports Your Life, Not the Other Way Around: Build a Business That Supports Your Life, Not the Other Way Around: This is huge, especially for us mums. It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle & forget what truly matters – those "little pottery cups from school" moments. But your business should be a tool that empowers you to live a more fulfilling life, not something that drains your energy & steals your precious time with your family, your pets (like my two crazy Miniature Pinschers!), & yourself. Start by identifying your biggest time sucks. What tasks are draining your energy & not bringing in revenue? Implement systems, perhaps leveraging smart AI tools to truly streamline your processes. AI can help automate emails, schedule social media, even analyze your marketing data, freeing up your time & mental energy. Delegate or ditch what’s not serving you. You can’t do it all, darling, and you don’t have to! Visualize Your Financial Freedom: Visualize Your Financial Freedom: What does financial freedom look and feel like to you? Get incredibly specific. Close your eyes. Where do you want to travel? What kind of house do you want to live in? What kind of legacy do you want to build? Create a vision board. Gather images, quotes, anything that represents your financial goals. Look at it daily. Visualize it daily. This helps you align your energy with your goals and creates a powerful magnetic pull towards abundance. I often find myself daydreaming about spontaneous family trips, investing in my kids' education, & having the freedom to focus on what truly lights me up – all powered by a thriving business. Celebrate Your Wins (No Matter How Small): Celebrate Your Wins (No Matter How Small): Acknowledge & celebrate your financial milestones, no matter how small they seem. Every win, darling, builds momentum & reinforces your belief in your ability to create abundance. Landed a new client? Book that massage. Hit a revenue goal? Buy those shoes. Each time, tell yourself, “I’m a big deal!” This isn't arrogance, it's self-love and acknowledgment of your hard work. Remember, darling, you are capable of creating incredible things. You have the power to build a business that not only thrives financially but also supports the life you dream of. It starts with mastering your money mindset. It starts with believing in yourself & the immense value you bring to the world. Want support on this journey? - Radical Personal Agency: Entrepreneurship on Your Terms
Questioning the Status Quo: Carving Your Entrepreneurial Path with Radical Personal Agency Ever felt like a square peg in a round hole, lovely? That persistent little voice whispering, "This just isn't quite right for me "? Maybe it was a job, a course, or even a "standard" system that everyone else seemed to thrive in, but for you, it just… grated. Sound familiar? Then you're absolutely in the right place. For so long, many of us, especially as women, have been subtly (or not so subtly!) encouraged to fit in, follow the prescribed path, & avoid rocking the boat. But what if those moments of "mis-fit" aren't failures on our part? What if, instead, they're powerful signposts, gently nudging us towards something truer, something uniquely ours? If you're just starting out as a Foundation Builder, trying to figure out how to do things your way, this is for you. My own journey has been punctuated by these pivotal moments – times when established systems felt constricting, & times when a proactive search led to profound discovery. These experiences didn't just shape me; they forged an unshakeable conviction that the most powerful way to build a business, & indeed a life you love, is by embracing radical personal agency & daring to carve your own path. When the System Fails You: Lessons from a Little Girl Who Dared to Question My first real taste of "mis-fit" came early, in primary school. I remember feeling like the system simply wasn't working for me. I was losing confidence, afraid to ask questions, & generally feeling a bit lost & unseen. It wasn't that I wasn't capable, but the environment just wasn't nurturing my way of learning or my inquisitive nature. It was a tough time, & it taught me a very early lesson about how the wrong environment can stifle even the brightest spark. Thankfully, I had a father who was a fierce advocate. I vividly recall him standing up for me, quite literally sometimes, challenging teachers who seemed more intent on quiet compliance than on fostering curiosity. Witnessing his conviction in ensuring my voice wasn't silenced planted a seed: the understanding that sometimes, you have to question, to push back, to seek an alternative when the status quo just isn’t serving you. Honestly, that experience, though challenging, was one of the first moments that highlighted the importance of not just accepting things as they are, but courageously seeking what could be . It also taught me to listen to that inner voice, that intuition, which tells you when something isn't right. This deep understanding of the need for tailored support & an environment that fosters your unique strengths is exactly why Femmeprenista exists – to help you find your purpose & the right path forward. #Let'sConnect Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose "I Don't Just Do What I'm Told": The Strategic Power of Proactive Questioning That early experience, & others that followed, cemented a core part of who I am. As I often say, "I don't just do what I'm told. I actually question: Is this the best way of doing things?" Now, this isn't about being difficult or contrarian for the sake of it. Far from it. For me, it's a strategic approach to problem-solving & innovation. It’s about genuine curiosity & a drive to find better, more aligned, more effective solutions – in business, & in life. Think about it: how many "standard operating procedures" in the world exist simply because "that's how it's always been done"? As entrepreneurs, our ability to question those norms, to look at a problem with fresh eyes & ask, "But what if…?" is one of our greatest assets. It’s how we spot gaps in the market, how we innovate, & how we create businesses that truly serve our clients & ourselves in a more meaningful way. This proactive questioning helps us develop the mental resilience & clarity needed to navigate the entrepreneurial path. So much of success begins with this inner work – developing that unshakeable self-belief. That's why mindset, vision, & overcoming blocks are so important; it's about sharpening your FOCUS. Finding Your "Fit": The Active Pursuit of Thriving Environments My academic journey after school further highlighted the power of personal agency in finding your "fit." My first university experience wasn't quite right; again, that feeling of mis-fit. But instead of just pushing through, I took a step back, re-evaluated, & listened to my intuition. This led me to the University of East London (UEL) to study Fashion Design with Marketing. And honestly? It was like coming home. I found my "tribe" – people who thought like me, who shared my passions. The course structure, with its unique blend of creativity & solid business principles, just clicked . I was a young mother at the time, my eldest daughter was a baby, but in that supportive, stimulating environment, I thrived. Finding my people & a place where I truly belonged at UEL was transformative. It underscored the power of connection, which is why we created Femme:Connect – a global community for ambitious female entrepreneurs to find their tribe & support each other in forging their own paths. Femme:Connect Community Page This wasn't a passive occurrence; it was an active pursuit. It involved questioning my initial path, taking ownership of my unhappiness, & making intentional choices to find an environment where I could flourish. It taught me that we don't have to passively accept situations that drain us; we have the power to seek out or create spaces that energise & uplift us, making sure our well-being is prioritised so our business energises rather than drains us. The MBA Revelation: From Corporate "Cog" to Entrepreneurial Conviction Years later, after navigating the corporate world – where, despite valuable experiences at places like Apple, I often felt like a "replaceable cog" & yearned for more direct impact & autonomy – another pivotal moment of questioning arose. After my third child, the thought of returning to a corporate structure that felt increasingly misaligned filled me with a sense of dread. Honestly, I vividly remember thinking, "This just seems ridiculous, there must be a better way." This led me to pursue an MBA at Cranfield University. Initially, I thought it would open doors to more senior corporate roles. But the universe, as it often does, had other plans! The MBA was intense, inspiring & incredibly clarifying. I remember thinking during the taster day it was "like having a little mini explosion go off my head!" You know that feeling when everything just clicks ? This was new information, crazy information, & I loved it. Immersing myself in strategic business principles didn't lead me to a better corporate job; it powerfully reconnected me to that entrepreneurial spark I’d had since selling sweets in the playground. I realised that even with a top-tier MBA, climbing the corporate ladder wouldn't necessarily give me the quality of life, the autonomy, or the direct impact I craved. The central question became, "Isn't life about the quality of it, not just how much you've got in the pocket?" That was it. The conviction was sealed. My path was entrepreneurship. It was about taking all that knowledge, all those experiences of "mis-fit" & "discovery," & channeling them into building something of my own, on my own terms. The MBA shifted my mindset from, "How can I climb the corporate ladder?" to "How can I build my own ladder & help other women climb it with me?" It also helped me connect with amazing mentors & build a strategic network - that alone was worth the investment! How Lived Experience Forges Unshakeable Philosophy These formative experiences – feeling failed by a system, the courage to question (which, by the way, I still do constantly !), the active search for the right environment, the realisation that true fulfillment lay in autonomy – they aren't just anecdotes. They are the bedrock of my core philosophy, & by extension, the ethos of Femmeprenista. They forged my unwavering belief in personal responsibility & the profound importance of personal agency as the cornerstones of entrepreneurial success. Even when I started Femmeprenista, there were times when I felt like I had no clue what I was doing (hello, imposter syndrome!). I even remember launching my first website with glaring typos that stayed up for weeks – cringe, but true! But every stumble taught me something crucial about what my clients really needed. It's why we champion an approach that is empowering & holistic. We understand that your journey is unique. We know that sometimes the "rules" don't apply, & that true success comes from aligning your business with your authentic self, your values, & your vision for your life. It’s about understanding that your mindset, your clarity of vision, & your willingness to take ownership are paramount. Your Unconventional Path? That's Your Unique Strength, Lovely. So, if your journey to (or through) entrepreneurship feels a bit non-linear, if you've had your share of "mis-fit" moments, if you're someone who constantly questions if there's a "better way" – I see you. & I want you to know that these aren't weaknesses. They are your strengths. & remember, as Myron Golden says, "To become the tree, you have to cease being the seed." Your tendency to question is what will drive innovation in your business. Your experiences of "mis-fit" have gifted you with resilience & a deeper understanding of what truly aligns with you. Your unconventional path has equipped you with a unique perspective that no one else has. These are invaluable assets in building an authentic, fulfilling, & successful business. Embrace your journey, all of it. Own your story. Because your unique response to the world, your courage to question, to seek, & to build in a way that honours you , is precisely what will shape your extraordinary outcomes. My unconventional path isn't just my story; it's woven into the very fabric of Femmeprenista, where we champion every woman's courage to question, adapt, & lead with agency. About Femmeprenista The world doesn't need more people trying to fit into pre-defined boxes. It needs your unique brilliance, unleashed. Here are a few things to help you embrace your unique path: Reflect on your "mis-fit" moments: What did they teach you about what you don't want? How can you use that to guide your choices? - Femmeprenista Entrepreneurial Journey: Find Your Voice & Thrive
From Playground Hustle to PhD: The Femmeprenista Story Right, let’s be honest, how many times have you kicked off a new venture, buzzing with passion & drive, only to slam headfirst into a wall & wonder, "Is this even worth it?" Maybe you’ve poured your heart (and a hefty chunk of your savings!) into a business idea, only to feel like you’re the only one RSVP’d to the party. Or perhaps you’re juggling the beautiful chaos of motherhood alongside your entrepreneurial dreams, feeling more like a frazzled plate-spinner than a CEO. Trust me, I get it. In fact, that’s exactly why Femmeprenista exists. Today, I’m pulling back the curtain on my own journey – the real, messy, wonderfully imperfect path that led me to create this community. Because sometimes, knowing you’re not alone in the struggle, seeing that someone else has navigated similar choppy waters, is the most powerful fuel to keep you going. The Entrepreneurial Spark: From Sweets to Start-Ups My entrepreneurial journey didn’t kick off in a boardroom. It started on the playground, selling sweets. Now, before you picture some sophisticated operation, imagine a small, determined girl with a bag of pick ‘n’ mix, a keen eye for a deal, & a surprisingly strategic pricing structure (penny sweets were a game-changer, let me tell you!). That early experience, the thrill of building something from nothing, sparked a fire that, despite various detours, never truly went out. It flickered again in my final year at the University of East London (UEL – finding my “tribe” there after a less fulfilling start elsewhere was a huge lesson in trusting my intuition, by the way). My first “official” venture, Nisbett & George (born from the urgency of a “now or never” E-Factor competition and the fresh challenge of balancing new motherhood with entrepreneurial ambition), taught me invaluable lessons about partnerships, commitment, & the very specific realities of being a mother-entrepreneur. It also highlighted the importance of the right environment for growth, echoing my earlier experience of moving from a public school that was stifling my confidence to a private one where I could truly find my voice (thanks to my amazing dad who fiercely advocated for me when teachers tried to silence me – he was literally shouting at teachers when they were essentially telling me to shut up, which profoundly shaped my resolve to help others find their voice). Then came the corporate chapter – over thirteen years at places like Apple & Electrolux, & various tech start-ups. While I gained valuable skills & experience (and let’s be real, sometimes felt like a “replaceable cog” in a giant machine, facing moments where I was even scapegoated despite my best efforts to improve processes & implement preventative systems), it was also the catalyst for realizing that my heart truly lay in entrepreneurship. My MBA at Cranfield (another “sliding doors” moment sparked by a serendipitous car park encounter) wasn’t about climbing the corporate ladder; it was about realizing that even a bigger paycheck wouldn't deliver the quality of life I craved. As I juggled demanding studies with the beautiful chaos of motherhood (my school-aged daughter was just a baby then!), a question kept echoing: "Isn't life about the quality of it, not just how much you’ve got in the pocket?" That question became the driving force behind Femmeprenista. The "Why" Behind Femmeprenista So why Femmeprenista? Why focus on women entrepreneurs, especially mothers? Because I intimately understand the juggle, the challenges, & the incredible, untapped potential within each of you. I know what it’s like to try & have a “business conversation” while your kids are literally running circles around you, to go out with “one eyeliner on” because you were too busy cleaning up some kid-created catastrophe. I know the feeling of desperately needing support but having it arrive at the wrong time, or worse, not at all. There have been times when the weight of it all, the business, the kids, the research, felt crushing, & I questioned if I could really do it all. Even now, juggling my PhD research, client commitments, and four kids (including a toddler who thinks my laptop is a very expensive chew toy), there are days when I feel utterly overwhelmed. But then I remember that “it’s not just the system; it’s about what you do,” and I refocus on the small, smart actions I can control. I look at my children, remember my own journey of overcoming setbacks, and find the strength to push forward, one small step at a time. And I understand the deep drive within so many women, especially my fellow Millennials, to build something more, something meaningful, that supports their families & aligns with their values, especially when faced with socio-economic pressures like stagnant wages and the rising cost of living. Honestly, as millennials, we really got the bad end of the stick! Femmeprenista is more than just a business; it’s a mission to empower you to take ownership of your journey. It's about building a sustainable, fulfilling online business that fits into your actual life, not the other way around. It's about finding your voice, overcoming the “mummy guilt,” & realizing that you are inherently powerful & capable of achieving incredible things, even if your path looks a little different, even if it’s a bit slower due to all your amazing commitments. This is why I believe so strongly in the power of personal responsibility, in working smart, not just hard, & in building intelligent systems that work for you, so you can thrive without burnout. The Femmeprenista Approach: Holistic Growth for the Modern Entrepreneur My coaching & strategies are built on a holistic approach – the Business Flourish Framework. This framework empowers you to cultivate a resilient mindset, create impactful marketing, design streamlined systems, prioritize well-being, and strategically integrate AI into every aspect of your business. It’s about building a business that doesn't just make money, but fuels your soul, supports your family, & allows you to create a legacy you’re truly proud of. For example, when it comes to cultivating your mindset, we dive deep into overcoming those pesky limiting beliefs that hold you back, like the fear of visibility or imposter syndrome. We'll explore tools and techniques inspired by NLP and the Silva Method to reprogram limiting self-talk and visualize your success. Need to revitalize your marketing? We'll explore authentic branding strategies, leveraging psychological principles to craft irresistible offers that deeply resonate with your ideal client's desires, drawing inspiration from Rory Sutherland's insights. Struggling with systems & feeling overwhelmed? We’ll explore how AI can automate tasks, streamline your workflow, & free up your precious time so you can focus on strategic growth, not just endless admin. Feeling burnt out & juggling too much? We'll integrate wellbeing practices, including stress-management techniques & simple self-care rituals, so you can thrive, not just survive. - Coaching Niche for Mums: Find Your Dream Coaching Clients
From Muddle to Magnetism: Defining Your Dream Coaching Niche & Offer (Yes, Even with Kids in Tow!) Ever feel like you’re trying to nail jelly to a wall when it comes to your coaching niche? One minute you think you’ve got it, the next it’s slipped away, leaving you more confused than when you started & often with a little voice (or an actual small human) demanding your attention right now ? Like that morning I was prepping a client call, the laptop precariously balanced on a stack of cookbooks, only for Espresso (our resident Miniature Pinscher puppy) to decide that the charging cable was definitely a chew toy. If you’re nodding along, lovely, you are so not alone. This is a classic Foundation Builder feeling, especially when you’re a mother trying to weave your business dreams into the beautiful & let’s be honest, sometimes bonkers, tapestry of family life. But what if I told you that defining your niche & crafting that first compelling offer isn’t just another task on your already overflowing to-do list? What if it’s actually one of the most empowering acts of self-discovery you can undertake on your entrepreneurial journey? Beyond Business Mechanics: This is About Authentic Alignment Let’s be honest. Defining your niche & crafting that first offer can feel like one of those ‘big, scary business things’ that textbooks make sound so straightforward. But here’s a secret from my own winding journey – from feeling like a replaceable cog in the corporate world, through an MBA while juggling my second baby, to founding Femmeprenista & now navigating a PhD with my two youngest – this isn’t just about ticking a box. It’s about unearthing the very soul of your business. It’s an act of profound self-discovery, helping you pinpoint exactly who you’re meant to serve & how your unique blend of brilliance – yes, all those experiences that make you you , the triumphs, the lessons, even the bits you might think are irrelevant – can genuinely change their world. Truthfully, it took me ages to realise that my love of wine & plants could actually help me stand out! It’s really funny, because I vividly recall trying to map out what Femmeprenista would truly stand for, spread out on the living room floor with notes everywhere, while my then-toddler decided my carefully organised piles were a new mountain range for her toy animals to conquer, & the baby needed a feed right then . In those moments, if your ‘why’ isn't rock solid & your vision isn't deeply resonant, it's so easy for it all to feel... well, impossible. That deep alignment is your anchor. When I was first starting out, even with all my MBA knowledge, I remember feeling completely lost about where to even begin, questioning if I was even cut out for this, to start with. When your niche feels like a true extension of your purpose, & your offer lights you up from the inside out, it’s not just sustainable; it’s magnetic. This profound clarity, this deep inner knowing of your direction, is what helps you filter out the noise, say ‘no’ to distractions, & stay true to your path. And crafting a message that truly speaks from your heart to theirs? That’s where the real magic happens, creating marketing that feels effortless rather than a chore. Overcoming Those Foundational Fears with Personal Responsibility Now, I know what often comes next: the mental gymnastics of ‘what ifs.’ What if I pick the wrong niche? What if no one wants what I offer? What if I’m not really an expert? Honestly, that pesky imposter syndrome, it loves to gatecrash the party right when you’re on the verge of a breakthrough, doesn’t it? I’ve been there, staring at a blank page wondering if I was completely mad trying to build something new, especially with tiny feet pattering around & the constant juggle that comes with it. But here’s where one of my core beliefs, & something we champion at Femmeprenista, kicks in: personal responsibility . This isn't about blaming yourself if things feel tough; it's about empowering yourself by taking ownership of this discovery process. It’s about trusting that quiet voice of intuition – the one that often gets drowned out by the everyday hustle – alongside taking practical, deliberate steps. You know, that gut feeling that tells you, "this feels right," or "hmm, maybe not that." It's surprisingly astute. Clarity, my dear, rarely arrives in a perfectly packaged thunderbolt while you’re waiting for inspiration to strike. It’s forged in the doing, in the trying, in courageously taking that next small step, even when your knees are knocking. As I often tell my clients & remind myself during my own PhD journey with four children underfoot, your path might feel slower or look different to others & that’s okay! It's okay for the journey to look different for each person. Your progress is down to you & the smart, consistent actions you take. Your Niche as a North Star, Not a Cage And please, let’s bust a myth right here: your initial niche & offer are not a life sentence carved in stone! Phew, right? Think of them more like your North Star for this leg of the journey – a powerful starting point to gain momentum, test your ideas, & get that all-important validation from real, paying clients. It’s not a cage designed to trap you; it’s a launchpad designed to propel you. I remember when my school-aged daughter was little & I was exploring different business ideas after my MBA. That initial ‘perfect fit’ took some serious iterating. Some ideas sounded brilliant on paper but didn’t quite spark that fire in my belly when I delved deeper. Others felt exciting but didn't quite meet a pressing market need. It’s an adventure of define, test, refine. Each interaction, each piece of feedback, every client conversation is a clue. It’s a bit like when one of my daughters, Alana, was learning to ride her bike; those first wobbly attempts, knees scraped & a determined little frown etched on her face, weren't failures, they were essential data points helping her find her balance, her confidence, & eventually, her freedom. As I often tell my clients, your path might feel slower or look different to others & that’s okay! Your progress is down to you & the smart, consistent actions you take. Give yourself permission to evolve. Your business will thank you for it. Like Sarah, one of my Momentum clients, who initially thought her niche was 'general wellness' but after digging deeper, discovered her passion and expertise truly lay in helping busy mums reclaim their energy through simple, sustainable habits. And now, she's fully booked, helping women just like her, all while juggling school runs & bedtime stories. Practical Steps for Soul-Aligned Clarity So, how do you move from that muddle of ideas to genuine, soul-aligned clarity that feels both exciting & grounded? It’s about asking the right questions & listening deeply – both to yourself & to those you feel called to serve. Here are a few pointers to get you started: 1. Who Are You Really Meant to Serve? Go beyond the surface. Yes, demographics can be a starting point, but who is that one person you feel an undeniable pull to help? What are their secret hopes, their quiet fears, the dreams they barely dare to whisper even to themselves? Imagine sitting down with them for a cuppa – what’s really going on in their world, beyond the polished exterior? Demographics are a starting point, but go deeper. Who do you feel an undeniable pull to help? What are their secret hopes, quiet fears, & barely whispered dreams? Imagine sitting down with them for a cuppa – what’s really going on? 2. What’s Their 'Hair on Fire' Problem? What’s that one pressing challenge, that persistent niggle, or that burning question that keeps them scrolling Google at 2 AM? What are they desperately seeking a solution for? It’s not always what they say it is on the surface. Your job, as a coach, is to gently uncover the real ache, the unmet need that’s causing them discomfort or holding them back. What keeps them scrolling Google at 2 AM? Uncover the real ache, not just what they say . What's the unmet need causing discomfort? 3. How Does Your Unique Spark Provide the Solution? This is where your story, your skills, your passions – even the bits you think are irrelevant or "not professional enough" – come together to create something truly special. Perhaps it’s your corporate experience combined with your mindfulness practice that offers a unique take on leadership. Or maybe it’s your journey through motherhood alongside your graphic design skills that helps other mums build beautiful brands. Your unique blend is your superpower. How can you package this into a solution that feels both incredibly valuable to them & genuinely fulfilling for you to deliver? Your story, skills, & passions combine to create something special. What's your unique blend that is your superpower? 4. Craft an Offer That Feels Like a 'Heck Yes!' When you align what they desperately need with what you uniquely & joyfully provide, your offer almost creates itself. It feels authentic to you, irresistible to them, & is priced in a way that honours the transformation you facilitate & sustains your business (& your energy!). It’s not about just listing features; it’s about conveying the true value & the tangible outcomes they can expect. Align their needs with your unique gifts. Convey the true value & tangible outcomes. Price to honor transformation & sustain your energy. Laying this foundation is truly one of the most empowering things you can do for your business & honestly, for yourself. It's about building something that not only works but also feels deeply right , energising you rather than draining you. To help you get started, I've created a simple worksheet to brainstorm your ideal client, their 'hair on fire' problem, & your unique solution. If you’re a Foundation Builder – that’s someone just starting out, perhaps with an idea they’re itching to validate or those first few clients under their belt – & you feel that pull to get this right from the start, to truly validate your coaching idea & gain crystal clarity on your niche & ideal client before you invest significant time & money, then I warmly invite you to explore our Spark Program Spark Program Page . It’s a 4-week accelerator designed specifically to guide you through this exact process, with the support, expert guidance, & accountability you deserve. It's all part of the holistic approach we explore with our clients - often starting with mindset shifts using the Business Flourish Framework and our focus on Focus, Flair, Flow, Fuel, and Fusion - to help you build sustainable success. - Redefining Success: Female Entrepreneurs' Guide to True Achievement
The Femmeprenista Manifesto: Redefining Success on Your Own Damn Terms Ever feel like the definition of "success" is this elusive, one-size-fits-all thing that just doesn't quite fit you ? You know that feeling, right? Like you're constantly being measured against someone else's yardstick, especially as a mum trying to build a business? Let’s be honest, it can feel like you're the tortoise in a race full of hares. Me too, sometimes! And that’s okay – as long as you keep moving. You're not alone. This is the Femmeprenista Manifesto, and it's time to rewrite the narrative. About Let's be honest here for a sec, the traditional markers of success—corner office, six-figure salary, "boss babe" status—often leave us feeling empty, especially when they come at the expense of our families, our well-being, & our sanity. It's like trying to squeeze into a pair of designer shoes that are two sizes too small – they might look fancy, but they pinch like hell. I've been there. Juggling four kids, a PhD, & a rapidly growing business, I've learned firsthand that "success" isn't a destination; it's an evolving definition that YOU get to write. And it definitely doesn't have to involve sacrificing everything else you value. I don’t just dig the hole I’m told to dig; I actually question, Is this the best way of doing things? Even with the Business Flourish Framework in place, I still have moments where I look at other entrepreneurs and think, “Am I doing enough? Am I moving fast enough?” It’s a constant journey, this redefining of success, isn't it? Ditch the Hustle, Define YOUR Success So, what if success for you isn't about a fancy title but about having the freedom to pick up your six-year-old from school without stressing about deadlines? Or maybe it's about building a business that allows you to fund that dream family holiday you've been pinning on Pinterest for years. Perhaps it's about making a real, tangible difference in the lives of your clients. The point is, there's no right answer. Just yours. And seriously, who actually has the bandwidth for all of that unless it’s made super simple? Remember that feeling of excitement & pride when your toddler showed you her "masterpiece" painting from nursery, even if it meant interrupting that all-important call? That’s the kind of joy & fulfillment we should be weaving into our definition of success. My own journey is all about this redefinition. Nisbett & George, my first venture fresh out of uni after the E-Factor competition, really highlighted the unique balancing act of early motherhood & entrepreneurship. That experience taught me a lot about navigating those early years when your business partner isn't juggling the same life stage, having to make tough choices, & realizing that different seasons of life demand different priorities. Fast forward to now, juggling my PhD research & building Femmeprenista while navigating the beautiful chaos of four kids (including a toddler who thinks my laptop keyboard is a musical instrument, & a teen who is convinced she knows everything), I know for sure that “success” has to include the ability to thrive within that reality. Like Simone Biles, “I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles.” And I’m the first Carlene Nisbett, so I set my own rules. Beyond the System: Taking Ownership Yes, the system has its challenges. Millennials, in particular, have been dealt a pretty tough hand. It often feels like we're the first generation to earn less than our parents. We’re juggling insane childcare costs & stagnant wages while our parents are still working, & everything from housing to a block of cheese costs a fortune. A 2023 report from the Resolution Foundation found that typical millennial household incomes are 4% lower than Generation X at the same age, highlighting the unique financial pressures faced by our generation. It's frustrating, no doubt. But here’s the thing: blaming the system, while sometimes valid, can also be a disempowering trap. But what if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you can navigate it? How you can work smart , not just hard, to create the achievement you desire, even within the constraints? Honestly, you've got a choice: you can make a living or you can design a life. (Thanks, Jim Rohn for that truth bomb!) Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose My own experience, even navigating corporate environments like Apple, taught me that "hard work beats intelligence" when combined with a smart strategy. It also showed me, rather brutally at times, that taking ownership, even when things go sideways (like when I became the scapegoat for a systemic issue), is non-negotiable. You see, I don't just do what I'm told. I actually question, Is this the best way of doing things? & no matter where I'm at, like, if I see a problem, I like to solve it. It's about asking, “Okay, what can I do to make this better, to learn from this, to move forward?” The Business Flourish Framework: Your Roadmap to Holistic Success At Femmeprenista, we've developed a framework for building a business that doesn’t just survive, but truly flourishes, alongside your whole life. It's designed specifically for the unique challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, particularly those still building the foundations of their business. Let's explore the key elements: Mindset: Cultivating mental resilience & overcoming limiting beliefs. This is about mastering your inner game, identifying & overcoming those pesky limiting beliefs that whisper “you’re not good enough” or “you can’t do it all.” Branding: Creating a magnetic brand presence that attracts your ideal clients. It's about confidently sharing your unique message & building authentic connections. Systems: Streamlining workflows to reclaim your time & energy. Think AI-powered automation, efficient processes, & the sheer joy of a well-oiled machine that frees you up to focus on what you love. When I first tried to implement efficient systems in my own business, I was completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of AI tools available. It felt like trying to drink from a firehose! It was only when I took a deep breath, broke it down, & focused on automating one small task at a time (like scheduling social media posts) that I started to see the magic happen & reclaim some precious time. Wellbeing: Prioritizing self-care & preventing burnout. This isn’t just bubble baths & green smoothies (though those are nice too!); it’s about building sustainable habits that support your mental & physical energy so you can thrive, not just survive. AI Integration: Strategically incorporating AI to enhance all areas. This is about working smarter, not harder, leveraging the power of AI to automate, gain insights, & create a business that scales effortlessly. How We Work / Business Flourish Framework This framework isn't about adding more to your already overflowing plate; it's about integrating everything you're already juggling into a more streamlined, sustainable, & truly fulfilling whole. Your Next Step: Reclaiming Your Definition of Achievement This Manifesto isn’t just a declaration; it’s an invitation. An invitation to reclaim your definition of achievement, to rewrite your own narrative, and to build a business that reflects your unique vision & values. Follow this simple 3-step checklist to get started right now: Define Your Non-Negotiables: Write down three things that truly define achievement for you . Is it time freedom? Financial security? Making a difference? Be specific. Identify Your "Why": Why are these three things so important? How will achieving them change your life & the lives of those you love? Take ONE Action: Choose one small, concrete action you can take today to move closer to one of your non-negotiables. Schedule it in your calendar. Ready to take that step with support & guidance?
