- Executive Coaching for Female CEOs: Amplify Your Impact
Beyond the Boardroom: Strategic Insights on How High-Achieving Female CEOs Can Leverage Executive Coaching to Amplify Impact, Forge a Lasting Legacy, & Lead with Visionary Clarity Hello lovely, You’ve reached incredible heights. You’ve built, you’ve led, you’ve conquered. The view from your CEO chair is one many aspire to, a testament to your vision, resilience, & sheer hard work. But let’s be honest for a moment, fellow leader to fellow leader. It can be a unique landscape up here, can’t it? One where the air is thinner, the decisions weightier, & the path forward, while exciting, sometimes feels like yours alone to chart. It can feel lonely. I get it. That feeling of “Is it just me? Is it just me feeling this way?” Honestly, it's probably not just you. About Carlene Nisbett / Femmeprenista As a CEO who has navigated these waters myself, juggled scaling a business with a PhD & a bustling family of four (plus two energetic dogs!), I understand the immense privilege & the often-unseen pressures that come with leading at this level. Trying to have a business conversation while the baby is trying to climb you as a tree… that's also very, very real! I remember one day feeling completely isolated, questioning every decision I made about expanding into a new product line. Today, I want to talk about something that helped me through that challenging time. Today, I want to talk about something that’s not a quick fix or a remedial tool, but a powerful strategic alliance for women like us: executive coaching. Not the kind that tells you what you already know, but the kind that unlocks your next echelon of leadership, impact, & dare I say, even deeper personal fulfilment. Think of it as rocket fuel for your already extraordinary journey. The CEO's Ascent: More Than Just a View from the Top Reaching the C-suite as a woman is a phenomenal achievement. You’ve undoubtedly shattered glass ceilings & overcome countless hurdles. Yet, the very success that defines you can bring a new set of challenges: • • The Isolation Factor: Who do you turn to when you’re the one everyone else turns to? True peers who understand the sheer scale of your responsibilities can be few & far between. That feeling of being at the top but also on your own can be crushing. • • The Weight of Monumental Decisions: Every major decision has ripples that affect your team, your clients, your bottom line, & your legacy. That responsibility is immense. What action do you need to take to get to the right decision? • • Advanced Mindset Mazes: You’ve mastered the mindset for growth, but new levels bring new devils, don’t they? Perhaps it’s navigating the complexities of significant wealth, stepping into a much larger public profile, or battling the subtle fear of plateauing after achieving so much. I know from my own academic pursuits & business scaling that pushing boundaries always unearths new layers of mindset work – it’s about consistently sharpening that inner clarity & resilience. • • The Unique Pressures of Female Leadership: Let’s be candid – leading as a woman, especially a mother, in a world still catching up, often comes with an additional layer of scrutiny & expectation. It’s like, "Oh, you're ambitious and a mum?!" These aren't signs of weakness; they are hallmarks of a leader operating at an advanced level, grappling with the sophisticated challenges that come with forging a significant path. You need support that understands this unique terrain, support that helps you not just manage, but truly thrive within it. Your well-being, your energy, how you show up every day – these are critical assets that need nurturing if you're to sustain your vision & impact. Like Lisa Nichols says, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer." This is where focusing on your mindset, intentionally designing your marketing & messaging, creating systems for momentum, & prioritizing your well-being become even more critical. Beyond Mentorship: Why Executive Coaching is Your Next Strategic Alliance You likely have mentors, a strong network, perhaps even a board. So, where does executive coaching fit in? For the visionary CEO, it’s not about seeking basic advice or being told what to do. It’s about engaging in a strategic partnership . Think of it as having a dedicated, high-level thinking partner whose sole focus is your growth, your vision, & your ability to lead your organisation to its fullest potential. This isn't about someone fixing deficiencies; it’s about unlocking latent capacity. I’m a huge believer in personal responsibility – you, as the CEO, are the driver of your success. An executive coach is the expert co-pilot who helps you see the entire map, anticipate turbulence, & navigate towards your chosen destination with greater speed & precision. They help you to continually refine your focus, ensuring your actions are always aligned with your grandest vision. This is a dynamic, co-creative relationship. You bring your expertise, your ambition, your challenges; your coach brings a bespoke framework, incisive questions, & an objective perspective to help you synthesize, strategize, & execute at your peak. What Real CEO-Level Coaching Delivers For a high-achieving female CEO, generic coaching just won’t cut it. You need a partner who can meet you where you are & elevate you further. Here’s what truly transformative executive coaching looks like at this level: • • A High-Calibre Strategic Thinking Partner: Someone who can go toe-to-toe with you on complex business strategy, challenge your assumptions constructively, & help you innovate. They’re not just a cheerleader; they’re an intellectual sparring partner. • • Bespoke, Nuanced Support: Your business, your leadership style, your life – they’re unique. Your coaching should be meticulously tailored to your specific goals & context, not a one-size-fits-all program. • • Deep Understanding of Scaled Operations & Future Trends: They need to understand the intricacies of leading a scaled business, from complex team dynamics to sophisticated financial strategy. • • And in today’s world, that absolutely includes helping you leverage cutting-edge advancements, like Artificial Intelligence, not just for efficiency, but as a powerful strategic advantage to outmanoeuvre the competition & innovate. For example, a recent McKinsey report indicates that AI adoption in high-growth companies is 3x higher than in stagnant ones . This is about smart integration that enhances your human brilliance, not replaces it. • • Refinement of Executive Presence & Inspirational Leadership: As your organisation grows, so too must your ability to inspire & lead larger, more diverse teams. • • Coaching can help you hone your communication, your executive presence, & your capacity to galvanise your people around a compelling vision. It’s about how your authentic leadership style translates into impactful marketing of your vision, both internally & externally. • • Holistic High Performance: True success isn’t just about the P&L statement. • • It’s about achieving your business ambitions while fostering your well-being, nurturing your relationships, & living a life that feels genuinely fulfilling. An exceptional coach understands this delicate, crucial balance. Our entire framework at Femmeprenista is built on this principle of holistic success, especially the importance of prioritising well-being. I recall when I was deep in my MBA at Cranfield, surrounded by brilliant minds, the most impactful discussions were those that pushed beyond theory into real-world strategic application. That’s the level of dialogue you should expect from your executive coach – someone who brings not just academic knowledge but lived experience & a forward-thinking perspective. It's that combination of strategy & real-world pragmatism that delivers true breakthroughs. As Jim Rohn says, “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.” Is Your Coach a True Visionary Partner? Strategic Questions to Ask Instead of generic “tips” for finding a coach, I want to offer some strategic considerations – questions to ask yourself & potential coaches to ensure you’re forging a partnership that can truly catalyse your next level of growth. You can use these questions as a scorecard during your interviews. Strategic Acumen & Complexity: Is this coach equipped to help me navigate the intricate strategic complexities of my business at its current & future scale? Can they genuinely challenge my thinking & contribute to high-stakes decision-making? Example: Can they help me evaluate the potential risks & rewards of entering a new market or launching a disruptive product? Leadership Evolution & Organisational Sustainability: How will this coaching relationship support the evolution of my leadership to build a self-sustaining organisation? Will it help me empower my team & cultivate future leaders effectively? Example: How can I delegate more effectively to my senior leadership team so that I can focus on strategic initiatives? Legacy & Long-Term Vision: Does this coach understand my desire to build a lasting legacy? Are they capable of helping me clarify that vision & translate it into actionable, long-term strategies? Example: How can I ensure that my company's values & culture remain strong as we scale & potentially consider succession planning? Holistic Alignment & Personal Fulfilment: Does this coaching approach honour my desire for holistic success? Will it support my well-being & personal fulfilment alongside my ambitious business goals, especially at this advanced stage of my career? Example: How can I better integrate my personal values & passions into my company's mission & culture? Understanding of Modern Leverage (including AI): Does this coach have a grasp of how modern tools, including AI, can be strategically integrated to enhance decision-making, operational efficiency, & competitive advantage within my specific industry? Example: How can AI help me identify & act on market trends to ensure we are making data-driven decisions, & also make the best of my team's time? These aren't just interview questions; they are touchstones for ensuring the coaching relationship will be a powerful catalyst for your continued ascent as a visionary leader. Leading with Vision, Building with Purpose: The Femmeprenista Way At Femmeprenista, we believe that leadership is a journey of constant evolution. The insights I’ve shared today are born from my own experiences as a CEO, my academic research into female entrepreneurship, & my passion for helping ambitious women build businesses that are not only wildly successful but also deeply fulfilling & impactful. One of my ongoing PhD research highlights has been that there's a unique resilience & resourcefulness that women bring to leadership, but it needs to be nurtured. It’s about finding that rare blend of strategic acumen, lived CEO experience, & a holistic understanding of the unique demands & aspirations of women at the helm. This is precisely the philosophy that underpins our highest-level support. I truly believe it's possible to build a business that not only thrives but also gives you the freedom & fulfilment you deserve. - CRM for Female Entrepreneurs: Simplify Your Business in 2025
Your First 'Smart' Hire: A Femmeprenista's Practical Guide to Choosing a CRM That Works FOR You (Especially if You're a Team of One) Right, let’s have a proper chat, you & me. If you’re a fellow femmeprenista, especially one juggling the beautiful chaos of motherhood & trying to build your empire from the kitchen table (often with a toddler attempting to “help” by redecorating your laptop with sticky fingers, or perhaps the delightful background serenade of your teenager’s latest gaming obsession), you know that your brain often feels like it’s running more tabs than your web browser. Am I right? You’re the CEO, the Head of Marketing, the Finance Department, Chief Tea Maker, & Customer Service Guru, all rolled into one magnificent, slightly frazzled package. And amidst all that, you’re supposed to remember every client interaction, every follow-up, every brilliant idea that pops into your head at 3 AM? Honestly, sometimes I think my brain needs its own PA just to keep track of my to-do list for my PhD, let alone the business & four kids! It’s a lot. And if you’re anything like me, you’ve probably had moments where you’ve thought, "There has to be a smarter way of doing this." Well, lovely, there is. And it might just be the most transformative ‘first hire’ you make, even if you’re proudly a team of one: a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. Now, hold on! Before you click away thinking, "Oh no, not another tech thing I have to learn!" or "CRMs are for big companies, not little old me!" – hear me out. I used to think that too. The term itself sounds a bit corporate & intimidating, doesn’t it? But trust me, the right CRM isn’t a burden; it’s your secret weapon, your digital brain, your very own admin assistant who never needs a coffee break and actually enjoys organising things. Why a CRM is Your Unsung Hero (Especially When You’re Juggling All. The. Things.) Let’s be brutally honest. When you’re starting out, or even a little way in, the idea of adding another system can feel overwhelming. You’re already spinning so many plates – client work, marketing, trying to remember if it’s PE kit day for your school-aged little one, & perhaps even finding a quiet moment to walk Cappuccino & Espresso. But here’s the thing: relying on memory or a patchwork of documents is a fast track to burnout & missed opportunities. As female entrepreneurs, especially those of us who are mothers, our time is beyond precious. It’s the one resource we can’t magically create more of. So, anything that helps us reclaim even a little bit of it, whilst also making us look & feel more professional, is non-negotiable in my book. I once spent $3000 and three months implementing a complicated CRM only to realize I wasn't even using 20% of its features... and to this day, I still cringe thinking about the lost hours trying to wrangle that beast! That's when I learned the power of simplicity... A good CRM, even a super simple one, can: Keep you organised: Imagine all your client details, notes, & communication history in one easy-to-find place. No more frantic searching through emails or trying to decipher scribbled notes on the back of an envelope (we’ve all been there!). Help you nurture relationships: It reminds you to follow up, send that birthday email, or check in with a past client. These little touches make a huge difference in building know, like, & trust. Make you look ultra-professional: Even as a solopreneur, a streamlined system for managing enquiries & clients shows you’re serious about your business. Free up your precious brain space: When your CRM handles the remembering, you can focus your energy on the stuff that truly moves the needle – serving your clients, creating amazing offers, & dare I say it, maybe even having a moment to yourself. This isn't just about being organised for organisation's sake. It’s about creating efficient systems that support your journey towards a more sustainable & fulfilling business, one that doesn’t demand every last ounce of your energy. It's about giving yourself the tools to truly flourish. Ditch the Feature Frenzy: What Do You Actually Need, Lovely? Okay, so you’re warming to the idea. But then you Google "CRM for small business" & BAM! A million options, all screaming about their endless features, integrations, & AI-powered widgets. It’s enough to send anyone running for the nearest biscuit tin. This can feel overwhelming - with over 600 CRM systems on the market, it's easy to feel lost before you even start. This can feel overwhelming - with over 600 CRM systems on the market, it's easy to feel lost before you even start. Here’s where we take a deep breath & apply a bit of that Femmeprenista wisdom: clarity over complexity, always. The "right" CRM for you isn't the one with the most bells & whistles; it’s the one that simply & effectively solves your current challenges as a "team of one." Before you even look at a single CRM website, grab a cuppa & a notebook (or your favourite note-taking app) & ask yourself: What are my biggest client management headaches right now? (e.g., Forgetting to follow up with leads? Losing track of conversations? Double-booking discovery calls? Feeling like client info is scattered everywhere?) What are the absolute must-have functions I need? For most solopreneurs, this might be: A place to store contact information (names, emails, notes). A way to track interactions & next steps. Basic task management or reminders. Perhaps a simple way to see your sales pipeline (if you have one). What would be nice to have , but isn't essential right now? (e.g., Email marketing integration? Appointment scheduling? Complex reporting?) Be honest with yourself. Don't get sucked into "shiny object syndrome." I remember years ago, getting excited about a super-duper project management tool that could practically launch a rocket to Mars. Did I need it for my then-fledgling consultancy? Absolutely not. It just added another layer of complication I didn't have the bandwidth for, especially with a baby & my MBA studies at the time. Lesson learned: simpler is often smarter, especially at the start. Trust your intuition & what feels genuinely helpful, not what the "gurus" say you should have. Simplicity: Your Strategic Advantage in the CRM Game Once you’re clear on your core needs, the next step is to champion simplicity. In the world of a busy femmeprenista, particularly one who’s also a mum, complexity is the enemy of progress. You need a tool that feels like a helpful friend, not another demanding taskmaster. Look for a CRM that: Is genuinely user-friendly: Can you navigate it easily? Does the interface make sense to you ? Many CRMs offer free trials – use them! Click around, try to perform your core tasks, & see how intuitive it feels. Streamlines your existing workflows (or helps you create better ones!): The goal is to reduce your administrative load, not add to it. How can this tool make your current processes smoother & faster? Doesn’t require a PhD to set up: You want to be up & running quickly, not spending weeks watching tutorial videos. Choosing a simple, effective CRM isn't about cutting corners; it's a strategic move. Every minute you save on admin is a minute you can spend on revenue-generating activities, developing your next brilliant offering, or simply being present with your family. And let’s be honest, sometimes that extra hour of sanity is worth more than gold! Taking the Reins: How to Confidently Choose Your CRM Match This is where you step into your CEO power, lovely. Choosing a CRM isn’t about following the latest trend or picking what someone else uses. It's about taking ownership of your business systems & making a strategic choice that solves your specific problems & supports your unique goals . Here’s a practical approach: Revisit Your Needs List: That clarity you gained earlier? It’s your compass. Shortlist 2-3 Options: Based on your "must-haves" & a preference for simplicity, find a few CRMs that seem like a good fit. Look for those designed for solopreneurs or small service-based businesses. Many have excellent free or very affordable entry-level plans. Dive into Free Trials: This is non-negotiable. Spend a bit of time in each. Can you easily add a new contact? Can you schedule a follow-up task? Does it feel clunky or intuitive? Prioritise Ease of Use Above All Else: If it feels complicated or frustrating during the trial, it’s likely to gather digital dust. Remember, the best CRM is the one you’ll actually use . Consider Future You (But Don’t Overbuy): While you don’t need all the bells & whistles now, it’s worth considering if the CRM can grow with you a little. Can you easily upgrade to a plan with more features if & when you need them? The key is finding something that supports your initial growth phases without overwhelming you or your budget today. This process is about empowering yourself. You’re not just picking software; you’re choosing a partner that will help you build a more organised, efficient, & ultimately, more joyful business. Building for Tomorrow, Today: Scalability Without the Headache One common worry for Foundation Builders is, "What if I outgrow it?" It’s a valid question. But the beauty of many modern CRMs is that they are designed to scale. My advice? Start with what you need now. Don't pay for features you won’t use for another year or two. Most good CRMs offer tiered pricing, so you can start lean & upgrade as your business grows & your needs evolve. Focus on foundational habits. Getting into the routine of using your CRM consistently, even with a handful of clients, builds the muscle memory you’ll need when you have dozens or hundreds. Look for easy data export. Just in case you do decide to switch systems down the line, knowing you can easily take your precious client data with you provides peace of mind. To illustrate, I know a coach who started with a basic CRM to manage 20 clients & then seamlessly scaled to a system that handles 200+ clients, automates her email sequences, & integrates with her payment processor. She started simple & only added complexity as her business demanded it. Another client, a virtual assistant, used a free CRM to land her first few clients, which then gave her the cash flow to invest in a more robust system to manage her growing team & client projects. The aim is to lay a solid foundation that can support your initial growth spurts without over-investing your time or money, or creating unnecessary complexity too soon. It’s about a sustainable solution that doesn’t add to the overwhelm. To ensure that you are building with scalability, consider these actionable steps: Map Your Future Client Journey: Even if it's just a basic outline, visualize how you'll interact with clients as you grow, and ensure your CRM can support those touchpoints. Prioritise Integration Capabilities: Check if the CRM integrates with other tools you plan to use (email marketing, payment processors, etc.). A connected ecosystem saves time and reduces manual data entry. Review Scalability Documentation: Most CRM providers have detailed documentation on how their system scales. Look for case studies or user stories that demonstrate successful scaling. Your CRM: More Than Just Software, It’s Your Ally Think of your chosen CRM not as just another bit of tech, but as a dedicated, efficient member of your (even if it’s a one-woman) team. It’s the silent partner that helps you stay on top of things, nurture those vital client relationships, & free up your mental bandwidth so you can focus on what you do best: sharing your unique gifts with the world. Choosing & implementing your first CRM is a powerful act of taking ownership of your business's efficiency & professionalism. It’s a step towards working smarter, not just harder – a principle we live & breathe here at Femmeprenista. It’s about creating systems that allow you to manage the "beautiful chaos" with a bit more grace & a lot less stress. So, are you ready to ‘hire’ your first smart assistant? To find a CRM that works for you, so you can get back to doing more of what you love, both in your business & with your family? Taking this step to systematise your client management is a fantastic move, especially when you're building the foundations of your business. If you're at that exciting stage of getting your core elements in place & want guidance on validating your ideas, clarifying your niche, & creating a solid action plan (which includes choosing the right foundational tools like a CRM!), our Spark Program Page is designed to help femmeprenistas just like you do exactly that. - Growth Mindset for Mumpreneurs: Unlock Success as a Busy Mum
A Growth Mindset: Your Secret Weapon for Entrepreneurial Success (Especially if You're a Mum!) Okay, let's dive into the growth mindset. You've probably heard the term thrown around – it's one of those buzzwords that can sound a bit empty after a while, right? But trust me, when you're navigating the rollercoaster of entrepreneurship, particularly as a busy mum, cultivating a growth mindset isn't just a nice-to-have; it's your absolute secret weapon. And honestly, it's what I'm trying to instil every day in my own four children. The rapid pace of technological change, especially with AI transforming how we work & live, means adapting or being left behind, making a growth mindset more essential than ever. I'm speaking from experience here. Juggling four kids, a PhD, and running Femmeprenista (not to mention two miniature pinchers with vastly different energy levels – Cappuccino’s zen vibes versus Espresso’s constant zoomies!) has taught me that mindset is everything . I vividly remember trying to finish a client proposal last week while my two-year-old was using my laptop as a canvas for her, shall we say, 'abstract' finger-painting, using my brand new "Rosewood" lipstick as her medium. Let's just say it ended up looking more like "Toddler Tornado" than "Rosewood," and my laptop screen became a modern art masterpiece. At that moment, a fixed mindset would have had me throwing my hands up in despair, muttering about the impossible juggle and feeling completely overwhelmed. But with a growth mindset? Deep breath, wipe the screen (and the toddler's hands and face – not an easy feat let me tell you!), reframe it as a challenge: How can I create dedicated work time while still being present for my family? The answer? A new system involving strategic time blocking, a carefully placed Paw Patrol episode (don't judge, mama – we all have our survival tactics!), and a deep dive into batching similar tasks. One trick that works for me is keeping a small whiteboard near my desk. Whenever a frustrating thought pops up, I write it down & then literally rewrite it as a challenge. It's surprisingly powerful. This is the core of what I'm exploring in my PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship, specifically around resilience and resourcefulness: It's not just the system, it’s about how you respond. Yes, the system has failed many of us, especially us Millennials. We've got the stagnant wages, the sky-high cost of living, and let's be honest, with grandparents still needing to work, the traditional childcare safety net isn't always there. You feel like you're constantly treading water. But is it just the system? What are the small, smart steps you can take today ? Remember what I always say: hard work beats intelligence when it's smart work. Beyond the Buzzword: What a Growth Mindset REALLY Means for You A growth mindset, at its core, is about believing that your abilities & intelligence aren't fixed. They can be developed through dedication, smart work, & a willingness to embrace challenges as opportunities. A growth mindset is essential for navigating today's rapidly changing business landscape. This is the exact opposite of a fixed mindset, which sees abilities as static & avoids challenges for fear of failure. As an entrepreneur, this means seeing every obstacle – a failed launch, a critical client email, a tech meltdown – not as a sign of your inadequacy, but as valuable feedback for growth. In my research, this ability to reframe and adapt is a recurring theme amongst the most successful Black female founders. Remember that time I completely messed up a product launch? It was for Cocoista Ltd., my afro hair & beauty venture. I’d grossly underestimated the logistics of shipping internationally. We ended up sending a box of hair products to Iceland instead of Ireland – not ideal! We lost nearly £2,000 due to shipping errors – a hard lesson, believe me. It was a proper face-palm moment. With a fixed mindset, I might have given up, convinced I wasn't cut out for this. But that little voice in my head, the one shaped by my dad’s fierce advocacy at school (he literally used to shout at teachers who tried to silence me!), reminded me that setbacks are just learning opportunities. It's about getting back up, figuring out what went wrong, & implementing a better system. And that's exactly what I did, learning a huge lesson about the importance of robust systems and planning for scale, which are key to the 'Flow' (Momentum & Systems) pillar of our Business Flourish Framework . You can learn more about the Business Flourish Framework here. The Mumpreneur’s Mindset Toolkit: Practical Strategies So, how do you actually cultivate this magical growth mindset? It’s not just about positive thinking; it’s about developing a toolkit of strategies & habits. Reframe Challenges: Next time you face a business obstacle (or a toddler who's decided your new rug is a giant colouring book), ask yourself, “What can I learn from this? How can I use this as an opportunity to grow?” Instead of thinking, “I can’t handle this demanding client,” try reframing it as “How can I delegate or systematize this process to better serve this client & free up my time?” It’s a game-changer. Honestly, it is. This is also a key part of the ‘Focus’ (Mindset) pillar within the Business Flourish Framework , which is all about getting your mind right. Embrace Imperfection: Perfectionism is the enemy of progress. Start before you're ready. Launch that imperfect product. Send that slightly wonky email. Remember, progress, not perfection, is the goal. We all start somewhere, & the entrepreneurial journey is about taking consistent action & learning as you go. Don’t let the pursuit of perfection hold you back from taking action. Let me tell you, my first website was far from perfect – it was a bit like a Frankenstein's monster of different templates – but it got the job done! Celebrate the Small Wins: Running a business while being a mum is no joke. Those small victories – landing a new client, finally automating that annoying task, getting the kids to school on time and with matching shoes – deserve to be celebrated. Acknowledge your progress, no matter how small. It fuels your momentum. You know, sometimes it’s as small as finishing my coffee before it gets cold – a true win in mum-land! Find Your Tribe: This entrepreneurial journey can feel lonely, especially when you’re juggling so much. Connecting with other female entrepreneurs who get it is essential. Invest in Yourself: This might seem counterintuitive when you're strapped for time & resources, but investing in your personal & professional growth is essential. This could mean joining our Launch Programme to finally get that business launched with a bang & set up systems that will support you as you scale. From Overwhelm to Empowerment: Owning Your Journey I know what you're thinking: This all sounds great in theory, Carlene, but what about the reality of school holidays, teething toddlers, and the never-ending laundry pile? Trust me, I get it. My journey is slower, my path is different, juggling four kids & a PhD while recovering from my fourth C-section. Am I going slower than a 20-year-old with no dependents? Yes, of course. But does that mean I can’t get there? Absolutely not! That's down to me . It’s about owning your journey & making conscious, smart choices. It’s about realizing that your path might be winding, but it’s yours . So, what’s one small, smart step you can take today to cultivate a growth mindset & own your progress? Share it below – let’s inspire each other! - Tech Ownership: Female Entrepreneurs' Guide to Mastering Tools
Tech Overwhelm to Tech Ownership: Why Mastering Your Chosen Tools is Non-Negotiable for Productive Female Entrepreneurs Okay, let’s have a real heart-to-heart, shall we? Picture this: it’s a Tuesday morning. You’ve finally carved out a precious couple of hours while the little one naps, or perhaps the older kids are at school. You sit down at your desk, cuppa in hand, ready to conquer that to-do list. But then… technology. That fancy new software you bought last month because everyone was raving about it? You still haven’t figured out how to actually use its "game-changing" features. Or maybe it’s the trusty old system that’s suddenly developed a mind of its own, & you’re spending more time wrestling with it than doing the deep work that moves your business forward. Sound familiar? Thought so! As female entrepreneurs, especially as mothers, we’re professional jugglers. We’re managing households, families, often pets (my two Min Pins, Cappuccino & Espresso, certainly add their own brand of delightful chaos to my days!), & our burgeoning businesses. The last thing we need is for our technology – the very tools meant to help us – to become another source of stress & a drain on our limited time. So many of us fall into the trap of thinking that accumulating more tech, more apps, more platforms is the secret to productivity. But I’m here to tell you, from years of experience both in the corporate world at places like Apple & in building my own businesses while navigating the beautiful chaos of motherhood & a PhD, that true, sustainable productivity comes from something far more profound: tech ownership. I don't just use what I'm told, I actually question, "Is this the best way of doing things?" & trust me, this approach has saved me countless headaches (and hours!). The Big Misconception: More Tech ≠ More Productive It’s so easy to get seduced by the promise of the next shiny new tool. We see an ad, hear a recommendation, & think, "Aha! This is what I’m missing!" We invest our hard-earned cash, spend a bit of time on a cursory setup, & then… it languishes. We only scratch the surface of its capabilities, or worse, we find it so complicated that we revert to our old, clunky ways of doing things. The truth is, using software, applications, or devices you don’t fully know can be incredibly counterproductive. You end up spending more time fumbling around, searching for how-to videos, or feeling that rising tide of frustration than if you’d stuck with a simpler tool you actually understood. We've all been there, haven't we? That moment when you realise you've spent an hour trying to do something that should have taken ten minutes, all because the learning curve felt more like a learning cliff-face. It’s enough to make you want to hide under the duvet with a cuppa & a good book It’s enough to make you want to hide under the duvet with a cuppa & a good book (please do that after you've mastered your tech, by the way!). From Passive User to Active Owner: Taking Radical Responsibility for Your Tech Stack This is where a crucial mindset shift needs to happen, & it’s something I’m incredibly passionate about: we need to move from being passive users of technology to becoming active, conscious owners. This isn’t just about knowing which buttons to press; it’s about taking radical personal responsibility for understanding & mastering the tools you choose to bring into your business. Think about it – you wouldn’t hire a team member & then not bother to train them or understand their role, would you? Your technology is a key part of your business infrastructure. It’s there to support you. To streamline your efforts. To help you serve your clients more effectively. But it can only do that if you truly take ownership of it. This is about sharpening your mindset, developing that resilience to push through the initial discomfort of learning, & really defining how these tools will serve your vision. & honestly, I feel like if you don't show your tech this respect, it's just not going to give you it back! I learned this lesson the hard way in various roles & even in my own entrepreneurial journey. There were times I felt overwhelmed by a new system, tempted to just muddle through. Like that time I accidentally sent out a marketing email to my entire list with the subject line "TEST - DO NOT OPEN!" costing me a lot of credibility & a chunk of change. But I’ve always had this innate drive to question, "Is this the best way of doing things?" And that curiosity pushed me to dig deeper, to understand, & ultimately, to take control. It’s a core part of how we approach building robust businesses within the Business Flourish Framework ; it’s about creating clarity & building that unshakeable confidence, even with something as seemingly dry as tech. After all, money loves clarity, right? The 'Mastery Dividend': Why Deep Learning Pays Off (Big Time!) Here’s the magic: the time you invest upfront in truly learning your core software & equipment pays you back in spades. I call this the 'Mastery Dividend.' When you understand your tools deeply: You work faster & more efficiently. You make fewer mistakes. You reduce tech-related stress & frustration (a massive win for any busy mum!). You can automate repetitive tasks, freeing up your precious time. You unlock hidden features that can genuinely transform your workflows. You feel more confident & in control of your business operations. Contrast this with the counter-productivity of superficial use. Spending excessive time navigating a steep learning curve for every single feature of every single tool can indeed frustrate you & hinder your performance. But strategic mastery of the right features of your chosen tools is an entirely different ball game. I remember working with a client in Momentum Coaching Page , a brilliant Scaling Leader who was drowning in admin. She had all the "right" software, but she was only using about 10% of its capability. We dedicated time to help her master the key automation features in her CRM & project management tool. The result? She clawed back nearly 8 hours a week! That’s an entire working day she could now dedicate to strategic growth, or, just as importantly, to being fully present with her family. That’s the Mastery Dividend in action. It’s really funny because she thought she needed more tools, when actually, she just needed to understand the ones she had! Recently, I had a tech challenge myself! I accidentally locked myself out of my main email account after a password update went awry. Sounds simple, right? But it brought my entire business to a standstill – client communication, invoicing, everything! It took me a frantic half-day of calls, password resets, & a lot of deep breaths to finally regain access. It was a stark reminder that even with years of tech experience, things can (and do!) go wrong. But because I understood the underlying systems, I knew where to start troubleshooting, & I was able to fix it myself. That experience reinforced to me that tech ownership isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a business survival skill. Choosing Your Tech Partners Wisely: Strategic Selection Over Shiny Object Syndrome Of course, mastery begins with strategic selection. It’s not about having all the tech; it’s about having the right tech for your specific business needs, your current stage (whether you're a Foundation Builder just starting out or a Scaling Leader looking to optimise), & crucially, your capacity to learn & implement. Don’t get swayed by hype or what everyone else is using. Ask yourself: What specific problem will this tool solve for me? Does it integrate well with my existing systems? Is the learning curve realistic for my current time & energy levels? Will it genuinely enhance my processes or just add another layer of complexity? To make that decision even easier, consider these steps: List your business needs: What are the core problems you're trying to solve with technology? Research potential solutions: Look for tools that directly address your listed needs. Consider integration: How well does the tool integrate with your existing tech stack? Assess the learning curve: Is the tool easy to learn and use, or will it require a significant time investment? Read reviews & testimonials: What are other users saying about the tool? Test before you invest: Take advantage of free trials or demos to see if the tool is a good fit for your business. Personally, I’ve found that the Apple & Google ecosystems, when used thoughtfully, can work exceptionally well together for me . That’s my personal fit, discovered through trial, error, & a commitment to understanding how they can serve my needs as a busy entrepreneur juggling family & a PhD. It’s not a prescription for everyone, but an example of finding what aligns with your individual workflow & preferences. The key is that conscious choice, rather than reactive accumulation. & honestly, finding that balance can feel like a superpower! For those of you just starting out & feeling utterly bewildered by the choices, know that support is available. Whether you're a Foundation Builder getting clarity on your foundational plan through something like our Spark Program Page or even opting for a Ready-to-Launch Kit Page to get your essential systems set up professionally from the get-go, making smart early choices about tech is vital. After all, what is it they say about planning…? “Plans are nothing, but planning is everything," right? Tech Ownership: It Adds up! Here's another "Tech Ownership" benefit! If you add up hours spent struggling with tech or hiring out tasks that you could master, you find you're: Saving money Gaining time. Demystifying "Mastery": It's About Competence, Not Becoming a Guru Now, when I say "mastery," please don’t think you need to become a certified tech guru overnight! That’s just another route to overwhelm. For most of us, mastery simply means identifying & deeply understanding the key features of your selected tools that will solve your biggest operational pain points. For example, I rely heavily on Asana for project management. I don't need to know every single bell & whistle, but I have mastered creating templates, automating recurring tasks, & integrating it with my Google Calendar. This allows me to keep all my projects on track without feeling buried in details. That's tech ownership in action! It’s about competence & confidence in using those core functions that will give you the biggest return on your time investment. Dedicate focused blocks of time to learn (even 30 minutes regularly is better than sporadic, frustrated attempts). Utilise official tutorials, knowledge bases, or even targeted short courses. Focus on one tool or one key feature at a time. Practice! The more you use it with intention, the more intuitive it becomes. This approach builds competence, which in turn breeds confidence. & a confident entrepreneur is an empowered entrepreneur. That's when the magic happens! Tech as Your Strategic Ally: Unlocking True Business Flourish When you shift your relationship with technology from one of overwhelm to one of ownership & mastery, it ceases to be a necessary evil & becomes a powerful strategic ally. This is where you can truly start to implement efficient systems, perhaps even leveraging smart AI tools to genuinely streamline your processes, & make significant strides in your business. Imagine: Your marketing campaigns running smoothly because you’ve mastered your email marketing platform & analytics. Your client onboarding being a seamless, professional experience because your CRM & scheduling tools are working in perfect harmony. Your finances being crystal clear because you truly understand your accounting software. Your team (if you have one) operating efficiently because everyone is proficient with your chosen project management tools. This isn't a pipe dream. It's the reality of tech ownership. This level of efficiency frees up your mental energy and, most importantly, your time. Time that you can reinvest into strategic growth, into innovation, into your own well-being (so crucial for avoiding burnout!), & into those precious moments with your family. It’s about creating systems that allow your business to energise you rather than drain you. For us at Femmeprenista, this holistic integration is key to our Business Flourish Framework , where smart systems & strategic tech integration help you create not just a successful business, but a fulfilling life. Take Ownership, Master Your Tools, Thrive So, my lovely ambitious friend, I urge you to take a good, honest look at your relationship with technology. Are you a passive user, feeling frustrated & overwhelmed? Or are you ready to step into active ownership? Choosing to master your chosen tools is a non-negotiable act of personal responsibility for any serious female entrepreneur. It’s an investment in your efficiency, your sanity, & your business’s long-term success. According to a recent study, entrepreneurs waste an average of 14 hours a week on tech-related issues. Tech ownership is about working smarter, not just harder, & creating the streamlined, supportive infrastructure that will allow you to truly flourish. You’ve got this. It might take a little time & focused effort, but the ‘Mastery Dividend’ is so worth it. Remember, the only impossible journey is the one you never begin! Feeling ready to not just manage, but truly master the systems that will propel your business forward? If you’re a Scaling Leader, an established business owner with proven traction who's actively scaling (typically £1k-£10k+/month, sometimes more, & growing) and is looking to implement tailored strategies, build those smart, efficient systems (yes, including practical AI!), & achieve sustainable growth without the burnout, then our Momentum Coaching accelerator could be the dedicated support you need. - Business Flourish Framework: Female Entrepreneurs' Blueprint for Success
Unveiling My Business Flourish Framework: The 5-Pillar Blueprint for Ambitious Female Entrepreneurs to Build Sustainable Success & Joyful Work-Life Integration Ever feel like you're conducting a chaotic orchestra where every instrument is playing a different tune, at a different tempo, & you’re somehow meant to be the conductor, the lead violinist, and sell the tickets at the door? Yeah, me too. More times than I can count, especially in those early days, juggling babies (and then toddlers, and then school-aged kids, and now a teen, a six-year-old, a two-year-old and an infant – send coffee!) with big business dreams. There were moments, like one particularly frazzled morning trying to prepare for a crucial presentation, only to find my youngest had decided my research notes were the perfect canvas for their artistic (and very sticky) jam-smeared expressions. It felt like a perfect metaphor for the beautiful, messy reality of building a business as a mother. I mean, honestly, who hasn't had a ‘one eyeliner on because I was too busy cleaning castor oil off the carpet’ kind of morning? Or maybe you’re like I was, terrified of those first “discovery call” sales calls, convinced I’d fumble every word & scare potential clients away? For years, the narrative we’ve been sold is "hustle harder." Sacrifice sleep, sacrifice sanity, sacrifice yourself on the altar of success. And honestly? I call rubbish on that. As someone who navigated the corporate world, completed an MBA while nursing my second daughter, & is now tackling a PhD with my two youngest in tow, I’ve learned – often the hard way – that burnout isn’t a badge of honour. It’s a dead end. You can read more about my journey here . That’s why I became so passionate about finding a better way. A way for ambitious women like us to build incredible, impactful businesses without losing ourselves, our health, or our joy in the process. This journey led me to develop the Business Flourish Framework™ Business Flourish Framework™ , the very heart of how we support female entrepreneurs here at Femmeprenista. Our commitment to holistic success for female entrepreneurs, especially mothers, is at the heart of everything we do ( learn more about our overall mission here ). So, grab a cuppa (or something stronger, I’m not judging – it’s always wine o’clock somewhere!), & let’s dive into how you can stop just surviving & truly start flourishing . What if Hustle Isn't the Answer? The Birth of a Holistic Approach I remember sitting in a particularly intense lecture during my MBA at Cranfield. My brain was buzzing with strategy, finance, leadership theories… & yet, a nagging thought persisted. All this knowledge, all this drive – if applied in the traditional sense, could it still lead to that feeling of being a replaceable cog, just a slightly better-paid one? Would it give me the life I truly craved – one with flexibility for my growing family, genuine autonomy, & the ability to make a direct, meaningful impact? The answer, I realised, was a resounding "probably not." That insight, combined with my own experiences of entrepreneurial trial-&-error (from selling sweets in the playground to navigating partnerships with my first proper venture, Nisbett & George, as a new mum), made one thing abundantly clear: for modern female entrepreneurs, especially those of us juggling the magnificent chaos of motherhood, a piecemeal approach simply won’t cut it. We need something holistic, something that honours every part of who we are & what we want to achieve. I know I needed that! The Business Flourish Framework™ Business Flourish Framework™ was born from this necessity. It’s my answer to the "hustle culture" that leaves so many brilliant women depleted & disillusioned. It’s a blueprint designed not just for business growth, but for life integration, for sustainable success that feels as good as it looks. The Five Pillars of Flourishing: Deconstructing the Framework So, what exactly is this magical framework? It’s built on five interconnected pillars. Think of them like the essential ingredients for baking the most incredible cake – each one vital, & their true power unleashed when they work together in harmony. Let’s break them down: 1. FOCUS: Cultivating Your Unshakeable Inner CEO This is where it all begins – your mindset. It’s about cultivating crystal-clear clarity clarity on your vision, not just for your business, but for your life. It’s about building profound resilience resilience , because let’s be honest, the entrepreneurial journey is a rollercoaster, & you need to be able to enjoy the ride, bumps & all. This pillar is dedicated to helping you develop an unshakeable belief in yourself, to take radical personal responsibility personal responsibility for your results (because blaming the algorithm or "the economy" gets us nowhere, right?), & to lead with unshakeable confidence. It’s about understanding that even if your path is slower or looks different – maybe you’re juggling four kids & a PhD like me! – it doesn’t mean you can’t get there. It means owning your pace & your power. Action: Spend 15 minutes journaling on your ideal day, visualizing it in detail. Action: Identify one limiting belief holding you back & challenge it with evidence. Action: Commit to celebrating one small win each day, acknowledging your progress. 2. FLAIR: Marketing & Messaging That Genuinely Connects Forget marketing that feels icky, pushy, or inauthentic. This pillar is all about uncovering your unique brand essence brand essence & expressing it with flair. It’s about learning to communicate your value in a way that resonates deeply with your ideal clients, attracting them like moths to a flame rather than constantly chasing. We dive into crafting compelling messaging, building a magnetic online presence, & creating marketing strategies that feel aligned & dare I say, fun . It’s about finding your authentic voice – something I’m deeply passionate about, having seen firsthand how vital it is to not be silenced – & using it to build genuine relationships. Action: Define your ideal client in detail, including their values, dreams, & pain points. Action: Conduct a brand audit – what does your online presence currently say about you? Action: Create one social media post sharing your "why" & connecting with your audience's needs. 3. FLOW: Designing for Momentum & Smart Systems If you’re tired of feeling like you’re constantly reinventing the wheel or drowning in a sea of to-do lists, this pillar is your lifeline. It’s all about creating streamlined, efficient workflows efficient workflows & implementing smart systems smart systems that build momentum & give you back your precious time & energy. I remember one of my early attempts at systemising client onboarding… Let’s just say it involved about seven different platforms, countless manual emails, & a whole lot of frustrated clients! I thought I needed the sophistication of Infusionsoft combined with the project management power of Asana, topped off with Calendly for scheduling & Stripe for payments! A total mess. But that taught me the critical importance of simplicity & integration – lessons I pour into helping my clients find their flow now. This isn’t about complicated tech that gives you a headache; it’s about finding the right, often simple, tools & processes that support consistent progress. Think automated client onboarding, content batching bliss, & financial systems that don’t make you want to cry. This is where we truly learn to work smarter, not just harder, creating space for strategic thinking & you know, actually living . Action: Identify one repetitive task in your business & explore ways to automate it. Action: Implement a simple project management tool (like Trello or Asana) to organize your tasks. Action: Schedule "batching" time to focus on similar tasks (e.g., writing social media posts for a week). 4. FUEL: Prioritising Your Wellbeing for Peak Performance You wouldn't expect your car to win a Grand Prix running on fumes & a prayer, would you? Yet, how often do we, as ambitious women, try to run our businesses (& lives!) on empty? This pillar is a non-negotiable. It’s about actively prioritising your physical, mental, & emotional health prioritising your physical, mental, & emotional health to sustain your energy, creativity, & resilience resilience . We’re talking practical strategies for managing stress, preventing burnout (my arch-nemesis!), nourishing your body, & carving out space for joy & rejuvenation. Because a business built at the expense of your wellbeing isn't success; it's a ticking time bomb. It's about ensuring your business energises you, rather than drains every last drop. Action: Schedule 30 minutes of "unplugged" time each day for self-care. Action: Incorporate a short mindfulness practice (like meditation or deep breathing) into your routine. Action: Plan one activity each week that brings you joy & helps you recharge. 5. FUSION: Leveraging Strategic AI Integration Now, this is where things get really exciting for the modern entrepreneur. Fusion is about strategically weaving Artificial Intelligence into the fabric of your business, transforming it from a futuristic buzzword into your incredibly capable, tirelessly efficient intelligent partner intelligent partner . Think of it as the supercharger for all the other pillars. AI can help you refine your marketing messages with deeper insights, automate repetitive tasks to enhance your operational flow, analyse data to sharpen your strategic focus, & even help manage your schedule to protect your wellbeing. I remember when I first started exploring all the AI tools, I felt like I was drowning in a sea of information, overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things I needed to sift through to find what could work for me! According to McKinsey, AI technologies could contribute an additional $13 trillion to global economic output by 2030 https://www.mckinsey.com/featured-insights/artificial-intelligence/what-is-ai-we-have-a-simple-explanation . It’s not about replacing the human touch; it’s about augmenting your brilliance & freeing you up to do more of what only you can do. Action: Explore one AI tool that can automate a task in your business (e.g., social media scheduling). Action: Use AI to generate ideas for content creation or marketing campaigns. Action: Research how AI can help you analyze customer data to improve your business strategies. The Real Magic? It’s All in the Synergy While each of these pillars is powerful on its own, the true, transformative magic of the Business Flourish Framework™ Business Flourish Framework™ lies in their synergy synergy . Imagine trying to bake that amazing cake we talked about earlier. You could have the best quality flour (Focus), the most delicious flavourings (Flair), a perfectly calibrated oven (Flow), & the energy to bake all day (Fuel). But if you don’t combine them correctly, or if you miss a key ingredient like the AI-powered mixer that ensures everything is perfectly blended (Fusion), you might end up with something… well, a bit flat. When these five elements work in concert, they create a robust, holistic system. Your clear Focus guides your authentic Flair . Your efficient Flow gives you the space & energy to implement your marketing & maintain your Fuel . Your well-nourished Fuel allows you to show up with clarity clarity & creativity. & Fusion acts as a powerful catalyst, enhancing efficiency & effectiveness across every single area. This synergy synergy doesn’t just build a thriving business; it cultivates a thriving life . It’s about achieving that often-elusive integration where your business supports your values, your energy, & your deepest aspirations. Your Path to Flourishing: Practical, Actionable, Empowering I know what you might be thinking. "This sounds great, Carlene, but is it actually doable for someone like me, with my unique set of challenges/kids/commitments?" My answer? A resounding YES. - Motherhood and Entrepreneurship Skills: Unlock Your CEO Power
From Play-Doh Picasso to Powerhouse CEO: How Motherhood Prepares You for the C-Suite Let's be honest, shall we? The life of a mum-slash-CEO is less about perfectly curated Instagram posts & more about navigating a daily obstacle course of sticky fingers, rogue crayons, & the occasional toddler meltdown strategically timed for your most important Zoom call. Sound familiar? But here's something you might not expect: that beautiful chaos, that constant juggle, isn't just a hurdle to overcome. It's actually the ultimate CEO training ground. I mean, think about it. One minute you're negotiating a hostage situation with a toddler who's discovered the joys of permanent marker, the next you’re closing a six-figure deal. That level of adaptability, that ability to think on your feet & switch gears faster than Espresso (my hyperactive miniature pinscher) chases squirrels, is a skill most CEOs would kill for. And it's this unique blend of chaos & commitment that truly sets female entrepreneurs apart. The Unexpected Perks of Organised Chaos Remember that feeling of dread when your carefully crafted morning routine imploded? Maybe the WiFi went down just as you were about to join that all-important webinar, or perhaps you found yourself mediating a heated debate about the correct way to eat a banana (peel first, or gasp not?). I've been there. I vividly remember one investor call where my two-year-old decided the perfect backdrop for my presentation was her interpretive dance routine featuring a feather boa and a saucepan lid. Yeah, not ideal. But what did it teach me? Resilience. Resourcefulness. The ability to prioritize under pressure. As Lisa Nichols says, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows." This has become my mantra – because if I’m not fuelled and grounded, how can I possibly pour into my business and my family? The truth is, motherhood throws curveballs like no other. It's a constant exercise in crisis management, problem-solving, &, let’s face it, advanced negotiation tactics. These "interruptions," these unexpected detours, are honing skills that are invaluable in the high-stakes world of business. My PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship often reveals this theme of resourcefulness born from necessity - finding ways to not just survive but to thrive amidst the juggle. Just this morning, I had to convince my six-year-old that her shoes were, in fact, not made of lava. Meanwhile, my eldest was having a full-blown fashion emergency (apparently ripped jeans are so last year because they weren't ripped enough - honestly, the nuances!). All this before my 9am meeting with a potential investor. Talk about pressure! By the time the investor meeting rolled around, negotiating a deal seemed like a piece of cake. My morning had prepared me for anything. Who knew deciphering toddler logic could be such a valuable business skill? From Mum Guilt to Momentum It's easy to feel like motherhood is holding you back. Like that never-ending to-do list & the guilt of not being able to be everywhere at once is a constant drag on your entrepreneurial dreams. I've been there. There was a time, shortly after my youngest was born, when I was trying to manage PhD deadlines, client calls, and, you know, basic survival (like remembering to eat a whole meal without interruption), and I felt like I was drowning. Balancing my PhD, building Femmeprenista, running the house, & being fully present with my four children has been a journey, & honestly, it's often slower than my peers. But I refuse to buy into the narrative that fulfilling one role means sacrificing another. In fact, a common theme I’m exploring in my PhD research is agency despite systemic challenges - my journey might look different, but that's not a barrier to success. It just means my “why” – that burning desire for freedom & fulfillment – has to be even stronger to fuel me through those "one-eyeliner-on" mornings. The key is to shift your perspective. See those moments of chaos not as interruptions, but as opportunities to build resilience, hone your focus, & tap into your inner resourcefulness. Sometimes the most unexpected turns can lead to the greatest growth. As Simone Biles says, "I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles." It's about finding your own unique path. If you're a Foundation Builder feeling this pull, know you're not alone. If you're feeling the weight of "mum guilt" or struggling to reconcile your roles, our support for female entrepreneurs can help you rediscover your inner drive. I remember a time, after my third daughter was born, when the sheer exhaustion of juggling a demanding corporate role with motherhood made me question everything. That’s when I knew something had to change. My corporate experience had become a soul-crushing grind, and the thought of returning to that rigid, inflexible environment filled me with dread. The MBA, ironically, helped me realize that even a bigger paycheck wouldn’t solve the fundamental misalignment. Leveraging the "Interruptions": "Juggler's Shortcuts" How can you turn these everyday challenges into entrepreneurial superpowers? These “Juggler’s Shortcuts,” inspired by my own rollercoaster ride, are about working smarter, not just harder: Embrace the Unexpected: Stop fighting the interruptions & start seeing them as training. Every tantrum, every spilled juice, every unexpected school project is a chance to practice adaptability & problem-solving. It’s all about perspective, right? For example, that investor call with my two-year-old's impromptu dance performance? It actually broke the ice and led to a really relaxed and productive conversation. Ask yourself: What’s the lesson here? How can I turn this into a strength? Prioritize Ruthlessly: Motherhood is the ultimate masterclass in prioritization. You learn quickly what truly matters & how to make decisions on the fly. Apply this skill to your business. This week, I had planned a whole day of deep work on my new program, but the school called - my son needed me. I had to let go of my initial plan, but by prioritizing my family, I actually freed up mental space to tackle a different, equally important task later that evening. What are the two most important tasks that will move the needle today ? Focus on those, and let the rest go (for now). Build Your Support System: We all need a village. Whether it's your partner, friends, fellow mums, or paid support, having people you can rely on is essential. Find your tribe & share the load. For me, this looks like dedicated evenings for work while my partner manages the kids, weekend deep dives into strategy with him by my side, and swapping childcare with a trusted friend. It all counts! It’s not always perfect, and I’ve had my share of moments where promised help didn’t materialize – but it's taught me the invaluable lesson of clear communication and setting realistic expectations. What does support actually look like for you, and how can you build it? Celebrate the Small Wins: Motherhood is full of little victories. Celebrate them, no matter how small. Did you manage to shower and put on both contact lenses today? Win! Did you finally finish that proposal between nap times while simultaneously diffusing a sibling squabble & preventing the dog from eating the mail? Major win! This positive reinforcement builds momentum & fuels your resilience. And yes, wine o’clock absolutely counts as a small win sometimes! You deserve it. This week, my small win was finally getting the baby to sleep through the night – trust me, that’s a game-changer for productivity! From Chaos to Clarity The truth is, building a successful business is a lot like raising kids. It's messy, unpredictable, & incredibly rewarding. And just like motherhood, entrepreneurship demands resilience, adaptability, & the ability to perform under pressure. So embrace the chaos, leverage the lessons, & remember, you've got this. As Lisa Nichols powerfully puts it, "You are the designer of your destiny. You are the author of your story.” This entrepreneurial journey isn't always easy; there have been times, especially juggling the demands of four children, a PhD, and building Femmeprenista from the ground up, where I came this close to throwing in the towel. It was the thought of creating a life of true freedom and flexibility, a life where I could be both a fully present mum and a successful CEO, that kept me going. - Mentorship for Mums in Business: Find Your North Star
Finding Your Entrepreneurial North Star: A Strategic Guide to Mentorship for Ambitious Mums in Business Ever feel like you're navigating your business journey with a slightly blurry map? You're pouring in the effort, juggling all the things (kids, clients, that never-ending to-do list), but sometimes it feels like you're missing a key piece of the puzzle. You're not alone, friend. Many ambitious mums in business, myself included, have been there. And often, that missing piece? It’s the guiding light of a truly amazing mentor. Now, I'm not just talking about any mentor, no. I'm talking about finding your entrepreneurial North Star – the person whose experience, wisdom, & support can illuminate your unique path, helping you navigate challenges, make smarter decisions, & accelerate your growth towards the fulfilling & successful business (and life!) you dream of. This post is about getting strategic about mentorship. It's about understanding exactly why the right mentor is essential, how to find the one aligned with your specific goals, and what it takes to cultivate a relationship that genuinely propels you forward. Because, let's be real, mentorship isn't a passive activity; it's an active partnership where you take the driver's seat. Why a Mentor is Your Secret Weapon (and Not Just Another "Should") It's easy to get caught in the "should" trap, isn't it? "I should network more. I should find a mentor. I should post more consistently." But "shoulds" rarely inspire action. So let's ditch the should & talk about the real, tangible why behind mentorship, especially for us busy mums juggling businesses, families, and all the glorious chaos in between. A mentor isn't just a cheerleader (though a good one will definitely celebrate your wins!); they’re a strategic advisor, a sounding board, and a guide who has navigated the terrain you're currently exploring. They can provide: Clarity & Focus: Ever feel like you're spinning your wheels, trying to do all the things at once? A mentor can help you laser in on your priorities, identify your unique strengths, & develop a crystal-clear vision for your business. Think of it as having a compass pointing you true north. This is where my Business Flourish Framework truly comes into play. Perhaps you need to work on your Flair – really dialling in your messaging & branding – or maybe it's Flow, streamlining those ever-expanding systems & finally leveraging the full power of AI (Fusion!) to free up your precious time. A mentor with experience in your industry can offer fresh perspectives & help you focus on what truly moves the needle. For example, imagine trying to launch a new online course while also potty-training a toddler and managing a school play costume crisis. A mentor might help you prioritize tasks, streamline your launch plan, or even just offer a sympathetic ear and remind you that you're not alone in the juggle. Accelerated Growth: A mentor has already walked the path you’re on. They can offer invaluable shortcuts, help you avoid common pitfalls, & provide tailored advice based on their own experiences – think of it as having a fast-track pass to wisdom. They can share strategies that have worked (and even more importantly, those that haven't!), saving you time, energy, & potentially costly mistakes. For instance, when I was first starting out with Nisbett & George, a mentor could have saved me months of frustration by guiding me through the complexities of partnership agreements and the unique challenges of being a mum-entrepreneur. Mindset Mastery: The entrepreneurial journey is a rollercoaster, no doubt. A great mentor helps you navigate the ups and downs, build unshakeable confidence, & overcome limiting beliefs that might be holding you back. They’ve been there, wrestled with self-doubt, and come out stronger. Their experience & support can be transformative when you're feeling overwhelmed or facing a challenge that makes you question everything. Like that time I was juggling my MBA at Cranfield with a nine-month-old and felt like my brain was completely fried. A mentor's voice of reason and encouragement could have been a lifeline during that intense period. Expanded Network & Opportunities: A mentor opens doors to their network, connecting you with potential clients, collaborators, or even investors. They can also point you towards valuable resources, conferences, or communities – accelerating your progress & impact. Remember, it's not just what you know, but also who you know (and who knows you !). Business Flourish Framework Ditching the "Mentor Lottery": A Strategic Framework for Finding Your Match Now that you’re clear on the why , let's dive into the how . Too often, mentorship feels like a lottery – hoping to stumble upon the perfect match by chance. According to a study by the Association of Talent Development (https://www.td.org/), 76% of people believe mentors are important, but only 37% currently have one. This disconnect highlights the very real challenge many face in finding the right guidance. I've been there, friend. Early in my entrepreneurial journey, I spent months floundering, trying to connect with mentors who just weren't the right fit. It felt like I was constantly searching for a needle in a haystack, until I developed this more strategic approach. You can be proactive & strategic in finding the mentor who is truly aligned with your goals & values. Here's a framework to ditch the mentor lottery & take control of your search: Define Your Needs: Before you even start looking, get crystal clear on what you need from a mentor. Are you a Visionary Leader looking to scale to 7 figures? A Scaling Leader needing support to break through a plateau? Or a Foundation Builder just starting out and needing guidance on validating your idea? The more specific you are, the better. Think of it like writing a job description for your ideal mentor. What skills, experience, & personality traits are essential? Identify Potential Mentors: Where do these amazing mentors hang out? Think industry events, online communities (like our very own Femme:Connect Community Page ) – hint, hint!), or even LinkedIn. Look for women who inspire you, whose businesses you admire, & whose journey resonates with your aspirations. Do Your Research: Don’t just go on surface-level impressions. Dive deeper! Read their blogs, listen to their podcasts, & follow them on social media. Get a feel for their values, their expertise, & their communication style. Does their approach resonate with you? Do you feel a genuine connection? Reach Out Strategically: This isn't about sending a generic "will you be my mentor?" message. Personalize your outreach. Mention something specific that resonated with you, share a challenge you're facing, or offer a genuine compliment about their work. Show that you've done your homework & that you value their time. Be clear about what you’re hoping to gain from the relationship, without being demanding. Nurture the Relationship: Mentorship is a two-way street. Come prepared to each meeting with specific questions, be open to feedback, and actively implement their advice. Show genuine appreciation for their guidance & look for ways to contribute to their success as well. A thriving mentoring relationship is a mutually beneficial partnership. About Making Mentorship Magic: Cultivating a Powerful Partnership Finding the right mentor is just the beginning. The real magic happens when you actively cultivate the relationship & leverage it for growth. Here's a 3-step checklist to make the most of your mentoring partnership: Prepare Like a Pro: Before each meeting, create a mini-agenda with 3-5 specific questions you want answered. This isn't just about maximizing your mentor's time; it's about ensuring you get the most value from the interaction. Think of it like prepping for a high-stakes client presentation – you wouldn't wing that , would you? Embrace the "Cringe" (It's Often a Breakthrough!): Feedback can be tough, but it's often the catalyst for growth. Remember, friend, even the most successful entrepreneurs have blind spots. A good mentor will gently (or sometimes, not so gently!) point them out. That initial "cringe" feeling is often a sign you're about to uncover something really valuable. Take Action & Own Your Progress: Don't just passively listen. Identify one actionable step from each meeting and commit to implementing it. Share your progress with your mentor – this accountability creates a dynamic partnership. Work With Us From Blurred Map to Crystal-Clear Vision: Owning Your Mentoring Journey Finding the right mentor isn't about finding a magic bullet; it's about adding a powerful compass to your entrepreneurial toolkit. It’s about gaining clarity, accelerating your growth, & building the unshakeable confidence to navigate the exciting, sometimes challenging, but always rewarding journey of building a business you genuinely love, a business that supports the rich, fulfilling life you deserve. - Adaptability for Female Entrepreneurs: Thrive in Chaos
From Forgotten Childcare to Flourishing Business: Why Adaptability is Your Entrepreneurial Superpower Right, let's be honest, how many times has this happened? You're geared up for a crucial meeting, presentation ready, laptop charged… and then it hits you. Childcare. Completely. Forgotten. I mean, let’s be real, in our house, it's usually my husband who draws the short straw on remembering these things! It’s a classic one-eyeliner-on, frantically-searching-for-the-school-permission-slip kind of morning, isn’t it? You know, the kind where Espresso, our hyperactive Miniature Pinscher puppy, decides the perfect moment to stage a one-dog re-enactment of Crufts agility course, weaving between your legs while you’re trying to explain to my teenage daughter (again!) why ripped jeans & a band t-shirt aren't exactly "business meeting attire." And, yes, I accidentally wore two different shoes once to an important client meeting! This is especially tricky for Foundation Builders who are just starting out & trying to balance it all. Sometimes, I swear, it feels like my life is one giant, beautifully chaotic juggling act. And you know what? It probably is. Trying to build a business, manage a household, keep the little humans alive, & you know, maybe even squeeze in a shower (some days, a girl can dream!), it's a lot. It’s a constant dance between spreadsheets & sippy cups, marketing plans & meal prep. Before I found my tribe in Femme:Connect , it felt incredibly isolating, like I was the only one navigating this crazy rollercoaster. But I've learned something crucial from all this glorious mayhem: adaptability is not just a survival skill for mothers; it's an absolute superpower for entrepreneurs. The Unexpected Parallels: Family & Business It might sound strange, but managing my four children (ranging from toddler tantrums to teenage angst) & our two lively Miniature Pinschers has taught me more about running a business than any MBA textbook ever could. Because here's the thing: whether it’s a forgotten lunchbox, a surprise school project deadline, or a client suddenly rescheduling, life – both at home & in business – throws curveballs. Constantly. The ability to pivot, re-prioritize, & find creative solutions in the midst of the whirlwind is essential. Remember that time my youngest decided to use my laptop as a canvas for her peanut butter artistry masterpiece, five minutes before my online workshop? Yeah, not ideal. Deep breaths, a quick clean-up (thank goodness for wet wipes!), a slightly delayed start, & a humorous anecdote to break the ice. Crisis averted. And honestly, it actually made the workshop more relatable! Everyone’s juggling something, right? Those moments, while stressful in the thick of it, have been invaluable lessons in adaptability. Reflections informed by my ongoing PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship constantly highlight the incredible resourcefulness of women in business, especially mothers. A 2019 study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor found that women-led businesses are more resilient during economic downturns, demonstrating their ability to adapt and innovate in challenging circumstances. We’re masters of contingency planning, even if we don’t realize it! I mean, if we can reason with a toddler refusing to wear socks, we can handle anything , right? It's like that old saying, “If you can organize a birthday party for a five-year-old, you can launch a product, no problem!" Building Your Adaptability Muscle: Practical Tips from the Trenches So, how do you cultivate this entrepreneurial superpower of flexibility? Here are a few practical tips I’ve picked up along the way: Expect the Unexpected: Let’s be real, something will always go sideways. Build buffer time into your schedule. Don't overschedule yourself (easier said than done, I know!). Assume things will take longer than planned, & when they do… breathe. It’s okay. Expect the Unexpected: Let’s be real, something will always go sideways. Build buffer time into your schedule. Don't overschedule yourself (easier said than done, I know!). Assume things will take longer than planned, & when they do… breathe. It’s okay. Systems Are Your Saviour: Having clear processes in place – for everything from client onboarding to content creation – creates a sense of stability amidst the chaos. I tried the "delegate like a boss" thing early on, and totally burned out my VA because I hadn't clearly communicated my expectations—lesson learned! Think of systems as your business’s internal operating system. A well-defined system means that even when the unexpected happens (and it will), you have a framework to fall back on, freeing up mental space to handle the curveball. If you're looking for support in streamlining your processes & leveraging the power of AI, our Launch Programme is designed to help Foundation Builders like you set up those essential systems. - Business Coaching for CEO Mums: Unlock Strategic Growth
Beyond the Buzz: A CEO Mum's Candid Guide to Making Business Coaching Actually Work For You (And Your Bottom Line) “Is business coaching actually worth it?” Ah, the million-dollar question (sometimes quite literally!). If you’re a female entrepreneur, especially one juggling the beautiful chaos of motherhood like me, I bet this thought has crossed your mind more than once. You see the glossy testimonials, the promises of skyrocketing profits, the coaches who seem to have it all figured out. And a little voice whispers, “Could that be me? Or is it all just… a bit much?” Let’s be candid. As a CEO, a mum to four, a PhD researcher delving into the world of female entrepreneurship, & someone who’s navigated both the corporate jungle & the entrepreneurial rollercoaster, I’ve seen the coaching world from all angles. I’ve invested in it, I provide it, & I study the dynamics that make support systems truly effective. And I’m here to tell you that yes, business coaching can be utterly transformational. But – and it’s a rather important ‘but’ – it’s not a magic wand. Its success, its real ROI, hinges on a few crucial things, starting with YOU. So, let’s get real. I want to share a CEO mum’s honest take on how to make business coaching a powerful, strategic investment that genuinely works for you, your business, & your bottom line, without you having to sell a kidney or sacrifice your sanity. You with me? Let’s do this. Is Business Coaching Really Worth It? The Candid Truth. Right, let’s tackle the elephant in the room. Does it work? Will you see a return? The honest answer: it depends. I know, not the straightforward “YES!” you might see plastered everywhere. But I believe in authentic conversations, and the truth is, coaching effectiveness is a dynamic partnership. It’s a two-way street, a dance between coach & client. I’ve seen entrepreneurs absolutely soar with the right coaching, achieving clarity they’d chased for years, building systems that gave them their time back, & hitting financial goals that once felt like a distant dream. And I’ve also seen (or heard of) situations where it… well, flopped. More often than not, the difference wasn’t just the coach; it was the entrepreneur’s readiness & willingness to actively participate. Think of it like this: a coach can hand you the most meticulously drawn map & a state-of-the-art compass. They can point out the pitfalls, highlight the scenic routes, & cheer you on from the sidelines. But you are the one who has to walk the path. You have to be ready to take the insights & implement them. You have to be willing to do the work, to be challenged, to step outside your comfort zone, & crucially, to take complete ownership of your journey & your results. From my own journey & the research I’m immersed in for my PhD, one thing is crystal clear: personal responsibility is non-negotiable for entrepreneurial success. It’s about seeing challenges not as roadblocks, but as opportunities to learn & adapt. It’s about understanding that while a coach can guide & support, the power to create change ultimately lies within you. When you bring that proactive, "I'm all in" energy to a coaching relationship, that's when the magic truly happens. Beyond the Pounds & Pence: The True ROI for Femmeprenistas Okay, so we’ve established that you need to be an active player. But what kind of returns can you really expect? While a boost to the bottom line is often a key motivator (and a very valid one!), for us female entrepreneurs, especially those of us juggling motherhood, the "worth it" factor of good coaching goes so much deeper than just financial ROI. Let’s be real, time is our most precious, non-renewable resource. More precious than gold when you’re trying to build an empire between school runs, nap times, & the endless chorus of “Muuuum!”. So, how does the right coaching deliver value that truly resonates with our packed lives? Crystal-Clear Strategic Direction: One of the first things brilliant coaching does is help you cut through the fog of overwhelm. It’s about getting laser-focused on your vision, understanding your unique strengths, & carving out a clear path forward. Suddenly, instead of being pulled in a million directions, you know exactly where you’re going & why. That kind of clarity? It’s priceless for a busy mind. It helps you make decisions faster, say "no" to distractions, & channel your energy where it matters most. It’s like clarifying your Focus Focus : the vision you're committed to, no matter what. Smart Systems & Strategies to Reclaim Your Time: Ever feel like you’re constantly reinventing the wheel or drowning in manual tasks? A great coach helps you implement efficient systems, perhaps leveraging smart AI tools to truly streamline your processes, & delegate or ditch what’s not serving you. Imagine having client onboarding that runs like clockwork, or marketing that attracts ideal clients without you having to be “on” 24/7. This isn't just about business efficiency; it’s about reclaiming precious hours to be present with your family, or, dare I say it, even for yourself! Think of it as optimising your Flow Flow : how you move through your work, your life, and your day. Unshakeable Confidence & Authentic Presence: So many incredibly talented women I meet undervalue themselves & their offerings. Coaching can be a game-changer here. It helps you build unshakeable confidence, truly own your expertise, & develop an authentic brand & message that magnetises your ideal clients. When you’re confident in your value, you charge what you’re worth, you show up authentically, & marketing starts to feel less like a chore & more like a joyful expression of your purpose. This is all about cultivating your Flair Flair : your authentic brand & message. A Business That Fuels You, Not Drains You: This is huge. The right coaching embraces a holistic approach. It understands that you’re not just a business owner; you’re a whole person with a life, family, & well-being to consider. It’s about building a business that energises you, aligns with your values, & supports your life, rather than demanding you sacrifice your family or health on the altar of "hustle culture." It’s about finding that sweet spot where your business & your personal life can flourish side-by-side. It's about ensuring your Fuel Fuel tank is always full, not running on empty! I remember when my second daughter was just a baby, & I was deep in my MBA studies. The juggle was intense, to say the least! There were definitely moments when I wondered if I could actually make it through the programme, balancing night feeds with early morning classes. Investing in support that helped me create clarity & implement simple systems wasn't just a business decision; it was a sanity-saver. It allowed me to focus, be more productive in the pockets of time I had, & ultimately, feel less like I was constantly chasing my tail. That kind of ROI doesn't always show up on a spreadsheet, but believe me, it’s gold. You know, it's funny, I teach about the importance of delegation, right? But even I, with all my MBA knowledge & CEO experience, struggled to truly let go of control in the early days. I’d micromanage every little task, convinced that "no one could do it as well as me." Of course, that just led to massive overwhelm & a whole lot of late nights fueled by lukewarm coffee. It wasn't until I invested in coaching myself that I finally understood the power of trusting my team & focusing on my zone of genius. Sometimes, we need that outside perspective to see the patterns we're too close to notice. Coaching as a Strategic Investment (Not Just Another Bill) It's easy to see coaching as just another expense on an already long list. But I want to invite you to reframe that. Drawing on my MBA from Cranfield & my years as a CEO, I firmly believe that the right coaching, at the right time, is one of the most strategic investments you can make – not just in your business’s growth trajectory, but in your own development as a leader & an individual. So, how do you know if you're truly ready to make that investment, especially if you're a Scaling Leader actively building momentum in your business? You’ve hit a plateau: You’re working hard, you’ve seen some success, but you feel stuck. You can’t seem to break through to the next level of income or impact, no matter what you try. You're ready to implement, not just learn: You’re past the stage of endlessly consuming free content. You’re craving actionable strategies tailored to your business & you're committed to putting in the work to see results. You have some resources to reinvest: While good coaching is an investment, not an expense, you do need to have some financial capacity to engage a coach whose expertise & approach align with your needs. You crave clarity & a proven roadmap: You’re tired of guessing & want expert guidance to help you navigate the complexities of scaling your business. And what should you look for in a coach, especially one who truly gets the unique journey of female entrepreneurs & mothers? You need someone who offers more than just cookie-cutter strategies. Look for a coach who: Offers a holistic approach: They see you as a whole person & understand that your business is intertwined with your life, family, & well-being. Understands the "juggle": They get the beautiful chaos of motherhood & can help you build a business that works with your life, not against it. Believes in tailored support: Just like my own pivotal experience moving to a school that truly ‘got’ me allowed me to flourish, the right coaching environment should feel like it’s designed for you . Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose Has a proven framework or methodology: This demonstrates they have a structured approach to helping clients achieve results. (We at Femmeprenista use our Business Flourish Framework to provide this holistic, tailored support, which you can learn more about! The Business Flourish Framework ) To give you a real-world example, I worked with Sarah, a brilliant coach who was amazing at client delivery, but struggled with the sales side. She was stuck around the £3k/month mark, despite her clients raving about her. By working on her sales mindset & implementing a simple, high-converting funnel that helped her own her authentic Flair Flair , she smashed through her income goals & is now consistently hitting £10k+ months. Another thing that helped was tapping into a deep sense of gratitude for her blessings by taking time each day to Fuel Fuel herself both physically & spiritually. Finding Your Guide: Empowerment Through Tailored Support Ultimately, the true value of good coaching lies in empowerment. It’s about finding a guide, a mentor, a strategic partner who doesn’t just give you answers, but helps you uncover your own. Someone who helps you sharpen your vision, build on your inherent strengths, navigate challenges with resilience, & construct a business that is not only profitable but also deeply fulfilling & authentically aligned with the beautiful chaos of your life. My own educational journey, from feeling lost in a system that wasn't the right fit to thriving when I found an environment & approach that resonated with me, profoundly shaped my belief in the power of tailored support. (You can read a bit more about my story & the "why" behind Femmeprenista here: About Carlene Nisbett / Our Story ). It’s not about finding a coach who has all the answers for you; it’s about finding one who asks the right questions, who challenges you to think bigger, & who empowers you to step into your full potential as a CEO. Like that time I felt completely overwhelmed trying to juggle a client launch with getting the toddler ready for nursery and remember thinking, 'Can I even do this?', and then reminded myself why I started - freedom, impact and time with my kids. Think of it as finding your "tribe" in a coach – someone who not only has the strategic expertise but also genuinely understands your world, champions your aspirations, & believes in your ability to achieve them. So, Is Coaching Your Next Smart Move? If you’re nodding along, feeling that pull towards greater clarity, more sustainable growth, & a business that truly aligns with your life, then exploring coaching could indeed be your next smart move. It’s not about passively receiving advice; it’s about actively co-creating your success story with a trusted guide. When approached with intention, a commitment to action, & a clear understanding of what you want to achieve, business coaching can be the catalyst that propels you & your business to heights you might have only dreamed of. It's an investment in your vision, your capabilities, & the incredible future you're building. Is business coaching an investment or expense? Find Out! Absolutely. - Toddler Business Lessons: Simple Growth for Femmeprenistas
Toddler Truths: Unexpected Business Lessons from My Two-Year-Old Let's be honest, running a business is a whirlwind, isn't it? Especially when you're juggling all the things – kids, partner, pets ( Cappuccino & Espresso are currently having a zoomie-off in the background as I type this – it’s like living in a furry pinball machine! ), & trying to build something meaningful. It's a beautiful chaos , as we like to say at Femmeprenista. & in the midst of all that lovely madness , sometimes the most profound business lessons come from the most unexpected sources. Like my two-year-old. You see, I’ve been working on refining the messaging for one of our Femmeprenista programmes. Hours spent crafting the perfect words, you know the drill. I’d been wrestling with this particular copy for days, tweaking & refining, convinced I’d finally nailed it. It was all very “professional” & “polished,” but something felt off. I was pretty pleased with myself, feeling like I’d finally cracked the code. So, naturally, I shared it with my toddler. Because who better to give feedback, right? (I'm joking, mostly!) Her response? A blank stare, followed by a decisive, No. Different. Ouch. My finely tuned, expertly crafted messaging... rejected by a tiny human who communicates primarily through pointing & the occasional invented word. My initial reaction? Honestly, I wanted to crawl under the table. All that effort, all that time, & my toddler, bless her heart, had just demolished it with two words. It felt a bit like carefully constructing a Lego masterpiece, only to have someone gleefully kick it across the room. But then, that familiar voice of reason piped up (you know, the one that sounds suspiciously like my own inner coach): "Okay, Carlene, what’s the feedback here?" Because even a "No" is data. Especially when it comes from your target audience, even if that audience is still mastering potty training. It got me thinking. If my messaging wasn’t clear enough for a two-year-old (whose world is all about direct experience & immediate needs), was it truly clear enough for the busy, overwhelmed female entrepreneurs I'm trying to reach? Those incredible women, often juggling just as much as I am, who need straightforward solutions, not more jargon? The answer, it turned out, was a resounding no. My toddler, in her own inimitable way, had highlighted a crucial point: Keep it simple. Keep it real. Keep it relatable. Just like talking to a two-year-old (though maybe with slightly fewer made-up words). So, back to the drawing board I went. This time, with a fresh perspective. I stripped away the fluff, the jargon, the overly complicated explanations. I focused on the core message: the problem I was solving, the transformation I was offering, & the direct benefit for the client. This reminds me of something Sabri Suby talks about – getting into the conversation already happening in your customer’s head.1 What are their real pains & how can you offer a solution that speaks directly to those? Toddlers, in their own way, are masters of this – they know exactly what they want (and aren't shy about letting you know!). & you know what? It landed. Not just with my toddler (who gave me a very enthusiastic Yes! this time, along with a sticky hug), but with my actual target audience too. The feedback has been incredible. Lessons from the Toddler Boardroom (Business Lessons for Female Entrepreneurs) This whole experience, as chaotic as it initially seemed, has given me some unexpected business lessons, particularly for Scaling Leaders (those amazing women like you, perhaps, who are already making waves but ready for that next level of growth) who are refining their message or brand: Clarity trumps cleverness: Don't get so caught up in being clever or sounding "expert" that you lose the core message. If a two-year-old can’t understand it, chances are your ideal client won't either. Think about it, would your toddler understand a complex sales funnel explanation? Nope. They'd want to know what’s in it for them (usually snacks or playtime!). Your clients are the same – they want to know the direct benefit, not the technical details. Authenticity always wins: Speak from the heart. Share your own messy, beautiful journey. Connect with your audience on a human level. They'll appreciate the realness, I promise. Just like a toddler with a scraped knee seeks comfort, your clients seek authenticity and connection when facing challenges. Feedback is your friend: Embrace it, even when it stings a little (or comes in the form of a toddler tantrum). Every "no" is an opportunity to refine, to improve, to get closer to that perfect "yes." This reminds me of the NLP principle, "There's no failure, only feedback," something Sue Knight has emphasized.1 My journey to creating my coaching qualification was itself filled with these “no” moments, juggling pregnancy and studies, but each one pushed me to find a better way. It took longer than I'd hoped, but the resilience it built was invaluable. Embrace your inner child: Seriously! Sometimes, stepping back & looking at your business through a child’s eyes – with that inherent curiosity & directness – can give you the fresh perspective you need. Remember when you used to ask "why?" about everything? Reconnecting with that childlike curiosity can unlock surprising innovation in your business. One of my clients, Sarah (who runs a thriving online bakery), recently told me how embracing this "inner child" curiosity led her to experiment with a completely new flavour combination (rose & pistachio macarons!), which became a best seller. It's all about getting out of that "grown-up" business box sometimes. Ready to make your messaging toddler-proof (and irresistible to your ideal clients)? Our Launch Programme is designed to help you craft crystal-clear messaging, build a strong brand, and secure those first paying clients. Learn More - Secondary Beyond Messaging: Simple Systems & Sustainable Growth (Business Lessons for Female Entrepreneurs) This “toddler truth” applies to more than just messaging. It’s about your entire business. Are your systems simple & streamlined? Is your client onboarding process easy to understand & navigate? Are you making things unnecessarily complicated, adding to the overwhelm (both yours & your client's)? Speaking of systems, let me share a recent "fail" that really got to me. I was convinced that this fancy new project management software was going to revolutionize my workflow. You know, the one with all the bells & whistles that promised to make me a productivity ninja? Well, it turned out to be more of a productivity black hole. I spent hours trying to customize it, migrating all my data, only to realize it was way too complicated for what I actually needed. I felt so defeated, like I’d wasted precious time & energy. I even had a little cry in the bathroom (don't tell anyone!). It felt like one step forward, two steps back. It was a classic case of "shiny object syndrome" gone wrong. In the end, I went back to my trusty Trello board & a simple spreadsheet. Sometimes, the simplest solutions are the best. It was a humbling reminder that systems are meant to serve us, not enslave us! If so, it might be time for a little simplification. Here are a few ideas to get you started: Juggler's Shortcut: Overwhelmed by social media? I get it. Try repurposing your existing content. For example, turn a blog post (like this one!) into bite-sized social media graphics using Canva. It’s a quick & easy way to maximize your content’s reach without creating everything from scratch. I did this recently with my blog post on "5 Mindset Shifts for Scaling Leaders," & the engagement was amazing. System Saviour: Drowning in client emails & admin tasks? Implement a CRM (Customer Relationship Management) system like Dubsado or HoneyBook. This keeps all your client communication, invoices, & contracts in one place, saving you hours of admin time. One of my clients, Maria, a business coach who was constantly chasing invoices, told me that implementing a CRM literally saved her sanity (and a significant amount of money!). Quick Clarity Tip: Create a simple, step-by-step checklist for your client onboarding process. This ensures nothing gets missed & provides a smooth, consistent experience for every new client. Think of it like a toddler's bedtime routine – clear, predictable steps lead to a happy outcome (for both you & your client!). Ready to ditch the overwhelm & build systems that actually work for you? Our Momentum Coaching program provides tailored support and practical AI solutions to help you streamline your business and create more flow. - Peer Advisory Groups: Women CEOs' Secret Weapon for Growth
The Unspoken Powerhouse for the Woman CEO: Why High-Caliber Online Peer Advisory Groups are Non-Negotiable for Visionary Leaders (Especially Mums) Seeking Exponential Growth & True Peer Support Ever feel like you’re speaking a completely different language, even to your most supportive friends & family? You’re navigating multi-million-pound decisions, complex team dynamics, perhaps even international expansion, & you’re trying to articulate the sheer weight of it all. They nod, they sympathise, but do they truly get it? If you’re a Visionary Leader, a woman CEO scaling remarkable heights, particularly if you’re also juggling the beautiful chaos of motherhood, the air at the top can feel pretty thin. It's a unique kind of isolation, isn't it? You've built something incredible, something that’s likely surpassed your wildest early dreams. You're a leader, an innovator, the captain of your ship. But who captains the captain? Who provides that confidential, high-level sounding board when the stakes are sky-high & the path forward isn't clear? For ambitious female entrepreneurs who have moved beyond the initial launch & scaling phases & are now firmly in the realm of visionary leadership, the answer often lies in an often-underestimated powerhouse: the high-caliber online peer advisory group. And let me tell you, from my own journey & from supporting countless women like you through Femmeprenista, these aren't a 'nice-to-have'. They are a non-negotiable strategic imperative. CEOs who participate in peer advisory groups report 20% higher revenue growth (Source: Vistage). If you're keen to understand the different stages of the entrepreneurial journey, including what defines a "Visionary Leader", our foundational post Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose offers some great insights. Beyond Just "Networking": Forging Strategic Alliances at the Top Let's be clear. When I talk about CEO peer advisory groups, I'm not talking about your average networking meet-up or another superficial mastermind promising 'six figures in six weeks'. Those can have their place, of course. But for the woman CEO playing a much bigger game, we need something more substantive. Imagine a confidential boardroom, but instead of employees or investors, it’s filled with women who are your true peers – other CEOs running businesses of a similar scale & complexity. They’re not there to pitch you or to get something from you. They’re there for the same reason you are: to engage in deep, strategic work, to collectively problem-solve high-stakes challenges, & to hold each other accountable to the big, audacious goals you’ve set. This aligns with the strategic thinking component of our FOCUS pillar within the Business Flourish Framework. This is about: Unfettered Honesty: A space where you can lay bare your biggest challenges, your fears, your audacious ideas, without judgement & in complete confidence. Collective Wisdom: Tapping into the diverse experiences & expertise of other accomplished leaders who’ve navigated similar terrains. I remember wrestling with a particularly thorny growth plateau a while back; the kind of strategic knot that felt impossible to untangle alone. Discussing it with a small group of fellow female CEOs, women who understood the nuance of scaling with integrity and family commitments, brought not just solutions, but a profound sense of relief. It was like a master key unlocking several doors at once. Robust Accountability: Not the hand-holding kind, but the respectful, empowering accountability that comes from peers who expect you to play at your highest level, just as they are. Strategic Depth: Moving beyond day-to-day tactics to grapple with the big-picture questions: market disruption, legacy building, advanced leadership, large-scale innovation. This really hones your strategic thinking & helps you cultivate the resilience needed to lead with unwavering confidence, even when the path ahead looks foggy. This isn't just about avoiding isolation; it's about cultivating a strategic advantage. It’s where you go to sharpen your leadership, pressure-test your strategies, & gain the kind of clarity that can shave years (and costly mistakes) off your growth trajectory. The Unique Advantage for Female CEOs & Mums: A True Sanctuary Now, for us as women leaders, & especially for those of us who are mums, these peer advisory groups offer an even more profound layer of support. The entrepreneurial journey is demanding for anyone, but let's be honest, we often navigate a unique set of pressures. We’re not just building businesses; many of us are also the primary caregivers, the CKO (Chief Kid Officer!), the ones ensuring the school play costumes are sorted alongside the quarterly financial reports. Ever feel like you're trying to make those costumes with one eyeliner on because you were too busy cleaning up some other mess the kids made? Yeah, I get it! A high-caliber peer advisory group, particularly one comprised of other women CEOs, becomes a sanctuary. It's a space where: Empathy is Innate: You don't have to explain the mental load, the 'mum-guilt', or the sheer exhaustion of trying to be a present parent while leading a multi-million-pound company. They get it. I recall a moment trying to explain the logistical nightmare of a crucial international product launch coinciding with one of my children being unexpectedly home from school with chickenpox – and trying to explain the product launch while dressed as a superhero because that was the only way to get the kid to take his medicine – to a group of male peers. While they were sympathetic, it wasn't until I shared it with a fellow CEO mum that I got that nod of complete, visceral understanding, followed by practical, empathetic advice on how she'd navigated something similar. In that moment, I felt incredibly stretched, the inner critic was screaming, but I took a breath and reminded myself that I’m a professional and a mum! That shared experience is invaluable. And let me tell you, trying to explain the complexities of that product launch while the scent of grape-flavored medicine hung in the air, and the sticky feeling of calamine lotion coated my hands? That was a moment! Holistic Success is Understood: These women understand that success isn't just about the P&L statement. It's about building a business that fuels your life, rather than drains it. It’s about finding that synergy where your professional ambitions & personal well-being don't just coexist but actively enrich each other. Discussions can seamlessly move from growth strategies to energy management techniques, because it’s all interconnected. Tailored Support Thrives: The advice & insights are often more nuanced & applicable because they come from women who are walking a similar path, balancing ambition with nurture, & legacy-building with family life. This kind of environment is crucial for sustaining your energy & passion for the long haul. It's about ensuring your business not only flourishes financially but also supports your overall well-being & allows you to lead with authenticity & joy. Finding Your "Visionary Tribe": What to Look For (and What to Avoid!) So, how do you find or cultivate this "Visionary Tribe"? Not all groups are created equal. Let me tell you, I learned this the hard way! I remember joining one group years ago that sounded amazing on paper, but it quickly devolved into a glorified sales-pitch session. I walked away feeling drained & completely disconnected. It taught me the importance of really vetting a group before committing. Here are a few things I believe are critical for an impactful peer advisory experience: Shared Values & Vision: Look for a group whose members share similar core values around integrity, growth, & perhaps even a similar vision for the kind of impact they want to make. This creates a foundation of trust & mutual respect. When we talk about Femmeprenista, our values are front & centre – you can learn more about our mission & what drives us on our About Femmeprenista page. Genuine Peer Level: This is crucial. You need to be with leaders who are genuinely operating at a similar scale & facing comparable complexities. While wisdom can come from many places, the strategic challenges of a £5M business are different from those of a £500k business. To assess this, ask potential group leaders: "What's the average revenue of companies in the group?". Commitment & Contribution: The group is only as strong as the commitment of its members. Look for individuals who are willing to show up fully, be vulnerable, & contribute generously with their insights & support. Skilled Facilitation: Often overlooked, but a skilled facilitator can be the difference between a productive strategic session & a rambling chat. They ensure discussions stay on track, everyone gets airtime, & challenges are explored deeply. Confidentiality as Sacred: This is non-negotiable. What's shared in the group stays in the group. This creates the psychological safety needed for true vulnerability & honest exchange. To ensure this, ask them "How is confidentiality ensured?" Focus on Holistic Growth: The best groups understand that the leader's personal growth is inextricably linked to the business's growth. They encourage development on all fronts – strategic, personal, & leadership. A great way to ascertain this is by asking "What percentage of the members have stayed in the advisory for over a year?" Be wary of groups that feel more like a sales pitch fest, lack structure, or are dominated by one or two voices. & while our wonderful Femme:Connect Community Page offers fantastic broader networking & peer support across all stages of the entrepreneurial journey, a dedicated CEO peer advisory group provides a distinct, more intensive, & strategically focused engagement specifically for established leaders. When seeking a high-caliber peer advisory group, the traits to avoid are: Groups that feel more like a sales pitch fest Groups that lack structure Groups dominated by one or two voices A Non-Negotiable Investment in Your Legacy & Leadership I often hear Visionary Leaders, especially mums, say, "I just don't have the time for something like this." And I get it, truly. Your time is beyond precious. But I want to gently challenge that perspective. Participating in a high-caliber peer advisory group isn't another drain on your time; it's one of the most powerful investments you can make in your time, your leadership, & your legacy. This is one of the building blocks to creating solid FLAIR for your brand in the marketplace. Think about the cost of a misstep at your level. The time, money, & energy lost on a flawed strategy or a poorly navigated challenge can be immense. The collective wisdom of a trusted peer board can help you avoid those pitfalls, accelerate your learning curve, & make decisions with greater confidence & clarity. This isn't an expense; it's a strategic investment in: Your Leadership Capacity: Stretching your thinking, challenging your assumptions, & honing your decision-making skills. Example: Increased strategic decision-making effectiveness by 30%, leading to more successful business outcomes . Your Business Legacy: Gaining insights that shape the long-term vision & sustainability of your company. Example: Enabled more sustainable business practices, lowering operational costs by 15% . Your Personal Resilience: Building a support system that understands your unique pressures & helps you navigate them with grace & strength. Example: Decreased stress levels in key stakeholders, improving focus on tasks by 25% . I know it’s easy to claim you don’t have time, but consider this: Femmeprenista clients that are part of a peer advisory group or 1:1 strategic partnership can save up to 10 hours a week on decision-making thanks to the strategic advice and framework. This kind of peer advisory is an incredible strategic asset. For those Visionary Leaders seeking even more personalised, one-to-one strategic partnership to navigate these advanced stages, dedicated programmes like our Ascend Executive Coaching Page can be a powerful complement, helping you implement the high-level insights gained & truly scale your impact. The journey of a woman CEO is extraordinary. It demands courage, vision, & an unwavering commitment to growth. But you don't have to walk it alone. Surrounding yourself with a true "Visionary Tribe" isn't just empowering; it’s essential for reaching your fullest potential & building a legacy that truly matters – all while navigating the beautiful, demanding, & utterly rewarding realities of your life as a leader & for many of us, as a mum. - Energizing Business for Mum Entrepreneurs: Design Your Dream Life
Designing a Business That Energises (Not Drains) Your Life as a Mum Entrepreneur Ever feel like you're running on fumes, juggling a million things, & your business, the very thing that was supposed to give you freedom, is actually sucking the life out of you? I get it. Truly. The juggle is real, especially when you're building a business whilst navigating the beautiful chaos of motherhood. I mean, just the other day, I was trying to finalise a presentation for a potential partner, & my toddler daughter decided it was the perfect time to redecorate the living room wall with my favourite (and rather pricey) lipstick. Let's just say it wasn't the "power pose" I was aiming for when I finally joined the call! Sound familiar? I remember trying to plan the launch of my signature program, Momentum , whilst recovering from my fourth C-section – talk about a messy middle! There was a moment when, fuelled by painkillers & sheer desperation to hit my deadline, I almost sent out the sales email to the wrong list. Talk about a near miss! It definitely wasn't the seamless, automated launch I preach! There was a time I felt so overwhelmed while trying to automate, I ended up deleting my email list by accident! But here's the thing: it doesn't have to be this way. You can design a business from the ground up that energises you, fuels your passions, and integrates seamlessly with your life as a mum. It's about making conscious choices, shifting how we think about entrepreneurship, & taking radical ownership of our energy. Beyond Burnout: A Proactive Approach We talk a lot about burnout, & rightly so. It's a real & pervasive issue for entrepreneurs, particularly for mums who are already juggling so much. But instead of just putting band-aids on burnout (another glass of wine, anyone?), what if we flipped the script & built businesses that prevent it from the outset? This isn't about adding another "to-do" to your already overflowing list. It's about a fundamental shift in how you approach your business design. My ongoing PhD research, which focuses specifically on the lived experiences of Black female entrepreneurs, often shows me that the ones who thrive long-term aren't just working hard; they're working smart . They’re building businesses aligned with their values, their energy levels, & their vision for their lives. This goes way beyond generic time management tips; it's a complete paradigm shift. For a while, I really struggled with this myself. I kept thinking building a bigger business meant I had less time for my family, like they were two opposing forces. I had to overcome this limiting belief to realise that a truly fulfilling business actually enhances my life, not depletes it. This reminds me of something Myron Golden says, "To become the tree, you have to cease being the seed." This quote is so powerful because it highlights the need for transformation. Just like a seed has to completely change its form to become a tree, we as entrepreneurs have to shed old identities & limiting beliefs to reach our full potential. What "seed" are you ready to release? This is where the Femmeprenista Business Flourish Framework comes in. It's a holistic approach to building a business that nourishes your life, not depletes it. Link to: Business Flourish Framework Designing Your Business for Sustainable Energy: The Femmeprenista Way As a Foundation Builder, you're laying the groundwork for your entrepreneurial dreams – congratulations on taking this exciting leap! I know it can feel overwhelming at times. It’s often like trying to build a rocket ship while simultaneously diffusing a toddler tantrum and preventing the dog from eating your laptop charger – all whilst secretly dreaming of escaping to a deserted island for a week (or maybe just a nap!). But trust me, there’s a better way. The key is to integrate work-life harmony from day one. This starts by asking some tough but essential questions: What truly energises you in your work? What activities leave you feeling drained? What kind of lifestyle do you want to create? What does "freedom" actually mean for you? What are your non-negotiables when it comes to family time & self-care? How can technology, particularly AI, empower you to work smarter, not harder, & free up time for what truly matters? These aren’t easy questions, but they're the foundation for building a sustainable, fulfilling business. It’s about taking radical ownership of your journey & realising that you are the architect of your entrepreneurial life. Yes, the system can sometimes feel rigged against us—stagnant wages, impossible housing markets, & all the rest. According to a recent report by the Resolution Foundation, UK wages have stagnated for over a decade, making it increasingly difficult for families to thrive. But what if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you can navigate it? How can you build something so strong & so uniquely you that it transcends those limitations? It's about embracing your unique path & designing a business that serves it. By focusing on mindset, marketing, systems, well-being, & strategic AI integration, you create a powerful synergy that allows you to thrive. For instance, setting up smart automation from the start (perhaps using an AI scheduling tool like Calendly) can free up hours each week, creating space for family time or simply breathing! Defining your ideal client clearly from the get-go saves you from wasting precious energy on marketing to the wrong people. Prioritising your well-being (even if it’s just a 10-minute meditation during nap time using an app like Calm!) means you’re showing up as your best self, both in business & at home. It all works together. This holistic approach aligns with our Business Flourish Framework. We help clients to define their Focus (Mindset), polish their Flair (Marketing), create systems for consistent Flow, and prioritize Fuel (Well-being). Fusion, the fifth element, represents strategic AI integration, which enhances all the other pillars, allowing for sustainable growth. You can find out more about the Business Flourish Framework & how it can transform your entrepreneurial journey here: https://www.femmeprenista.com/how-we-work Speaking of connection, our Femme Connect community is a fantastic space for sharing tips, celebrating wins, & finding your tribe. Link to: Femme:Connect Community Page . You might find another mum entrepreneur there who’s cracked the code on streamlining school holiday childcare – you never know! Overcoming Objections: The "I Don't Have Time" Myth Now, I know what you might be thinking: "Carlene, this sounds amazing, but I'm already drowning. I barely have time to shower, let alone redesign my entire business!" Trust me, I hear you. I've been there. I remember trying to plan a product launch whilst recovering from my fourth C-section, with a toddler & my infant son demanding my attention. It felt like I was constantly running on empty. And believe me, mornings when you're trying to rush out of the house & end up having "one eyeliner on" because you've spent the last 20 minutes cleaning up an epic glitter explosion are very real! But that's precisely why this approach is so crucial. It's not about adding more to your plate, it’s about making smarter choices with the time you have. Even five minutes spent clarifying your ideal client can save you hours of wasted marketing efforts down the line. A small investment in setting up a basic email automation system can free up mental bandwidth that you didn't even realise you were using. It’s about shifting from constantly reacting to proactively designing. It's about taking back control of your time & energy, even in small increments. What’s one tiny step you can take today to move towards a more energizing business model? Share it below – let’s inspire each other! Taking Action: Your 3-Step Next Steps Designing a business that energises your life is an ongoing process. It's not a destination, but a journey. But it's a journey worth taking. Imagine waking up excited to work on your business, knowing it supports, rather than sabotages, the life you want to create. It’s totally possible. It starts with these 3 steps: Reflect: What’s one area of your business that feels the most draining right now? Is it your marketing? Do you feel like you're constantly creating content but not seeing results? Is it client onboarding? Are you spending too much time on admin tasks? Are you struggling to switch off and find time for yourself & your family? Brainstorm: What’s one small tweak you could make to that area to make it feel even slightly more energising? (Think "psychological moonshots," not massive overhauls.) If it's marketing, perhaps you could explore AI tools to help automate content creation or scheduling. If it’s client onboarding, maybe you could create a simple welcome sequence or automated intake form. If you're struggling with work-life balance, maybe try time blocking your calendar, including family time & personal appointments. Commit: Schedule 15 minutes in your calendar this week to implement that tweak. Small changes add up! Actually put it in your calendar, right now! Treat this appointment like you would any client meeting – it's an investment in your future success & well-being. Ready to gain clarity on your vision & start building your business foundation?
