- CEO Mum Beautiful Chaos: Embrace the Juggle & Thrive
From Boardroom to Playroom: The Humorous Truth About Being a Down-to-Earth CEO & Mum Ever tried to deliver a killer presentation while a tiny human is using your leg as a climbing frame? Or negotiate a major deal with the dulcet tones of "Baby Shark" playing in the background? Welcome to my world! The world of a down-to-earth CEO, juggling spreadsheets & sippy cups, board meetings & bedtime stories. It's beautifully chaotic, often hilarious, & definitely not what you see in those perfectly curated Instagram feeds. Honestly, it is what it is! Just like that time my infant son decided to explore the joys of projectile vomiting during a Zoom call – talk about adding a special effect to my presentation! (It's wine o'clock somewhere, right?) The Reality of the 'Down-to-Earth CEO': It's Not All Glam & Filters Let's be honest, the entrepreneurial journey, especially for us mums, isn't always the polished, power-suited image we sometimes see. It's more likely to involve dodging rogue Play-Doh projectiles while on a conference call or realising mid-meeting that your toddler has redecorated the wall with your best lipstick (true story!). Ever had one of those days? Like when you're trying to record a course module on strategic marketing, & your teenage daughter walks in asking if you’ve seen her favourite crop top – the one you specifically told her not to wear to school because it shows too much midriff? The struggle is real. And the interruptions? Oh, the interruptions! Just the other day, I was mid-flow on a coaching call, discussing some seriously strategic stuff, when my two-year-old decided it was the perfect time to announce, at full volume, her newfound fascination with the inner workings of the toilet. Let's just say my client got a very authentic glimpse into my life. And you know what? She laughed. We all did. Because it's real life. See, that's the #beautifulchaos #beautifulchaos I always talk about! You know, the kind of chaos where you're trying to mediate a sibling squabble over the last cookie while simultaneously answering emails & pretending you’re totally unfazed? Been there! Why the "Perfect CEO" Image is a Myth (& Why It's Holding You Back) We're constantly bombarded with images of the "ideal" entrepreneur: flawless, focused, & seemingly immune to the everyday chaos of life. A recent study showed that 78% of entrepreneurs feel pressure to portray an unrealistic image of success on social media, leading to feelings of inadequacy & isolation. But this image, while aspirational, can also be incredibly isolating and, frankly, a bit demoralising. It creates this pressure to be something we’re not, to hide the messy, beautiful reality of our lives. But honestly, how sustainable is that? This is especially true for mothers in business. We’re already juggling so much, & the added pressure to project an image of effortless perfection can lead to burnout faster than you can say "Paw Patrol." It's like trying to build a multi-million pound business while simultaneously navigating potty training, homework battles, & the existential dread of the school summer holidays – with limited support because, you know, grandparents are still working and trying to make ends meet themselves! I remember, early in my entrepreneurial journey, feeling this intense pressure to present this polished image, to pretend the juggle wasn't real. It felt like I had to choose between being a “good” mum & a successful CEO. But then, after one particularly chaotic morning – involving a spilt strawberry smoothie, a missing sparkly pink school shoe, & my youngest deciding to use my laptop as a canvas for his artistic expression – I realised something profound. Trying to be someone I'm not was exhausting, & it wasn't authentic. I was drowning, not flourishing. It was like that fable of the Little Red Hen – I was doing all the work and not getting the right support when I really needed it! My PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship has highlighted this exact point, showing how crucial the right support systems are. What I learned from that experience is that you need to be clear about what kind of help you need and when you need it – like my plea to my mum: "I need help NOW, not when it's convenient for you!" My clients, my community, they don’t want the polished facade. They want the real me. The mum who understands the struggle, the CEO who gets it, the woman who can laugh at the chaos while still delivering incredible value. I'm just Carlene, wife & mum, PhD researcher, and down-to-earth CEO, here to share my lessons! Embracing the Juggle: Turning Interruptions into Opportunities for Connection So, how do we embrace the juggle, the interruptions, the beautiful chaos, & still run a successful business? It's about shifting our perspective and leveraging our natural strengths. Remember, as women, we're often natural multi-taskers and masters of adaptability – skills honed in the trenches of motherhood! Think of the FOCUS pillar of our Business Flourish Framework; it's all about mindset, resilience, & leading with confidence, even when your toddler is demonstrating their artistic flair on your freshly painted wall. This is where your inner strength, that "Big Deal Energy," shines. Those unexpected moments, those "oh-my-god-I-can't-believe-that-just-happened" scenarios? They’re not embarrassing mishaps; they’re opportunities for connection. They humanize us. They remind our clients, our community, that we're all in this together. What's more relatable than a bit of chaos? It's like how comedians work – their funniest material comes from real life, from those “cringe but true” moments we all experience. The more authentic you are, the deeper the connection. Just like when your perfectly planned Instagram Live is interrupted by your six-year-old proudly showing off their latest artistic creation (made entirely of toilet paper and glue, of course). It's not perfect, it's real. And that's what builds trust. And, practically speaking, it’s about putting smart systems in place, leveraging the power of FLOW. Prioritising your well-being (FUEL), building a strong support network, and remembering that asking for help is not a weakness; it’s a superpower. Remember, you have to fill your own cup first, so you can serve others from your saucer! My ongoing research into female entrepreneurship really reinforces this point, showing that sustainable success often comes from focusing on the internal (mindset, well-being) as much as the external (strategies, systems). Practical Tips for Navigating the Chaos (From One Juggler to Another) Power Hour: Dedicate 30 minutes to uninterrupted work on key tasks. Set a timer, eliminate distractions, & watch your productivity soar. It's like a mini-sprint for your business! For example, focus on outlining your next blog post, creating a social media graphic, or responding to client emails – one task, full focus, maximum impact. Boundary Boss: Set clear boundaries. Establish "work zones" & times. Communicate your need for focused time to your family. Even little ones can learn to respect "Mummy's work time." This might mean putting a "Do Not Disturb" sign on your office door (or the kitchen table, if that's your current command centre) and explaining to your family that when the sign is up, Mummy needs quiet time to focus. Tech to the Rescue: Use technology to streamline. Scheduling tools like Calendly, automated email sequences through platforms like Mailchimp, & AI assistants like Jasper can handle repetitive tasks, freeing you up for strategic work. Think of AI as your super-efficient virtual assistant, taking care of the busywork so you can focus on the big picture. This is what I call working smarter, not harder, by leveraging the power of AI integration – the FUSION pillar of our Business Flourish Framework. The Art of Delegation: Outsource tasks that don’t require your specific expertise. Imagine having a virtual team handling your admin, social media, or customer service. It's like having a clone (without the sci-fi drama)! Start small – perhaps by hiring a virtual assistant for a few hours a week to manage your inbox or schedule social media posts. Own Your Multifaceted Identity: You're an entrepreneur who is also a mum. Leverage the strengths of both roles – your empathy, multitasking skills, resilience. Think of it as your unique superpower! You're not diluted by motherhood; you're enhanced by it. Embrace your FLAIR and let your unique blend of experiences shape your brand. Want to truly embrace this? Then explore our Business Flourish Framework ! It’s a holistic system for success, integrating mindset (FOCUS), marketing (FLAIR), systems (FLOW), wellbeing (FUEL), and AI strategy (FUSION) to help you create a business that truly flourishes alongside your personal life. You're Not Alone: Finding Your Tribe & Embracing the Journey Building a business while raising a family can feel isolating, but it doesn't have to be. Connecting with other women who understand the juggle, the triumphs, & the hilarious mishaps can be incredibly empowering. It’s about finding your tribe, your community of support, and celebrating the journey together. What's one thing you're celebrating this week? Share it below – let's cheer each other on! If you're looking for a supportive community of ambitious female entrepreneurs who truly "get it," I invite you to join our free global online community, Femme:Connect . It's like having a virtual coffee date with your business besties, anytime, anywhere. Carlene Nisbett Founder & CEO, Femmeprenista (Coach, Mentor, Speaker) Wife, Mother of four, Business Owner, PhD Researcher, Pet mom, Plant mom, 5'0" tall Passionate Multitasker & Wine Lover, You get the drift P.S. - Remote Work Software for Femmeprenistas: Top 10 Picks for 2025
Strategic Tech for Thriving Femmeprenistas: My Top 10 Remote Work Software Picks for 2025 to Master the 'Beautiful Chaos,' Amplify Efficiency, & Build a Business That Flourishes With Your Life Alright, let’s have a real chat. If you’re anything like me, your day is a whirlwind. A beautiful, chaotic, utterly rewarding whirlwind, but a whirlwind nonetheless. Juggling a business (or three!), a PhD, four incredible children spanning from tiny tot to discerning teenager, two miniature pinschers with personalities bigger than they are, & trying to find a minute to actually sip a hot cuppa – it’s a lot. & I know so many of you are right there with me, carving out your empires amidst school runs, nap schedules, & the never-ending quest for a moment’s peace to think strategically. Honestly, sometimes it feels like I'm trying to manage a photoshoot, while simultaneously writing a research paper & negotiating with a two-year-old about wearing shoes! You know that feeling, right? The truth is, in this wonderful world of female entrepreneurship, especially when you’re a mother, time isn’t just money; it’s sanity. It’s presence. It’s the space to breathe & dream bigger. & that, my loves, is where smart technology choices become less of a ‘nice-to-have’ & more of an absolute lifeline. It’s an act of personal responsibility towards creating a business that truly serves your life, not one that drains the life out of you. For 2025, I want you to think about your tech stack not just as a collection of tools, but as your strategic allies. The right software, chosen thoughtfully, can be the secret weapon that helps you reclaim precious hours, streamline the heck out of your operations, & ultimately, build a business that flourishes right alongside your life. This isn't just about managing tasks; it's about managing your energy & empowering you to work smarter, not just harder. It’s about finding that beautiful harmony where your business ambitions & your personal life can truly dance together. & let's be honest, when you're trying to record a podcast segment & the two-year-old decides your leg is a climbing frame while the six-year-old is loudly narrating their latest Lego creation, you need systems that work seamlessly in the background! It's what helps me juggle my Thrivology digital work with my family. So, forget overwhelming feature lists & confusing jargon. I’m sharing my top 10 remote work software picks for 2025, viewed through the lens of a CEO, a mum, & someone who passionately believes that your business should amplify your life, not complicate it. I remember one time, I felt so lost in a sea of software options that I almost gave up on the whole idea! It's these experiences that led me to create this list. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of logins, passwords and tech jargon! I almost threw in the towel! It's these experiences that led me to create this list. These are the kinds of tools that help you create efficient workflows & strategically integrate technology into your business – principles we champion at Femmeprenista because they lead to increased productivity & more space for what truly matters. (I truly believe technology helps me pursue my mission of becoming a How We Work / Business Flourish Framework ). Beyond Features, Towards Freedom: Why Strategic Tech Matters Before we dive into the list, let’s be clear: this isn’t about chasing the shiniest new app. It’s about being ruthlessly strategic. It’s about understanding your specific pain points – whether that’s juggling client communications while helping with homework, scaling your team without losing your mind, or simply finding a way to keep all the brilliant ideas in your head organised. As a Scaling Leader, this is how you’ll thrive. The right tech empowers you. It frees up mental bandwidth. It automates the repetitive, so you can focus on the revenue-generating, the impactful, the joy-sparking. It helps you build sustainable growth without burning out, which is at the very heart of Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose . I feel very strongly about women being empowered, I have always been the person who’s going to question, I’m always the person who’s going to stay curious. When your systems are flowing, you have more energy for your family, for your own well-being, & for the visionary work that truly lights you up. So, let’s explore some game-changers. My Top 10 Remote Work Software Picks for Femmeprenistas in 2025 I’ve chosen these tools based on their ability to solve real problems for female entrepreneurs at different stages of their journey. Think of this as your curated toolkit for mastering the beautiful chaos & building a business that truly thrives. 1. The All-in-One Project & Task Manager (e.g., ClickUp, Asana, Trello) Why it’s a game-changer: As your business grows, so do the moving parts. Whether you're a solo Foundation Builder juggling client work & content creation, or a Scaling Leader managing a team & multiple projects, a robust project management tool is non-negotiable. It’s your central hub, your digital brain, preventing things from slipping through the cracks (like that crucial follow-up email you meant to send between the school run & a supplier call). Carlene’s Take: Honestly, trying to manage everything on spreadsheets or sticky notes when you’re scaling is a recipe for overwhelm. I remember in one of my early ventures, before these sophisticated tools were so accessible, the sheer mental load of tracking everything nearly did me in! These platforms allow you to map out projects, assign tasks (even if it's just to 'Future You'), set deadlines, & see at a glance what needs your attention. For me, it’s about creating clarity amidst the delightful daily pandemonium. It means I can switch from "PhD researcher mode" to "CEO mode" to "mum-who-needs-to-find-a-lost-teddy mode" with a little more grace because I know the business tasks are captured & organised. Implicitly for: Foundation Builders (Trello for simplicity) to Scaling Leaders (ClickUp/Asana for robustness). 2. Seamless Team Communication (e.g., Slack, Microsoft Teams) Why it’s a game-changer: If you have a team, even a small one (or plan to!), email chains can quickly become a nightmare. Dedicated communication platforms keep conversations organised, searchable, & instant. They foster a sense of connection for remote teams & cut down on inbox clutter. Carlene’s Take: When I was in corporate, the endless CCs & reply-alls were soul-destroying. Honestly, I feel like as millennials, we really, really got the bad end of the stick, we got all the newness of the technology, but we got all the bad bits as well. Now, with a distributed team, a tool like Slack is essential. It’s where quick questions get answered, wins are celebrated, & we can maintain that vital team cohesion even when we’re all in different places. It’s about efficient communication so we can all get back to our zones of genius (and for me, that might be deciphering my toddler daughter’s latest masterpiece). Implicitly for: Scaling Leaders, or Foundation Builders collaborating with VAs. 3. Reliable Video Conferencing (e.g., Zoom, Google Meet) Why it’s a game-changer: In the online business world, face-to-face connection (even virtually) is key for building trust with clients, collaborating with partners, & leading your team. Carlene’s Take: A good video conferencing tool is table stakes. It’s where the magic of connection happens. But more than that, it needs to be reliable . There’s nothing worse than tech glitches when you’re trying to have an important client conversation – especially if you’ve already performed a miracle to get a quiet 30 minutes while the baby naps! It reminds me of what Rory Sutherland said about the Uber map, “What bothers us about waiting for a taxi isn't actually the duration it's the degree of uncertainty.” Look for features like recording (great for repurposing content or sharing with team members who couldn’t make it) & screen sharing. Implicitly for: All stages. 4. Cloud Storage & Document Collaboration (e.g., Google Drive, Dropbox) Why it’s a game-changer: Keeping all your important documents, client files, & brand assets organised & accessible from anywhere is crucial for efficiency & peace of mind. Collaborative features mean you can work on documents with team members or clients in real-time. Carlene’s Take: I shudder to think of the days of emailing different versions of a document back & forth. I remember one time at one of my old corporate jobs, I think it was Apple, the amount of emails I would get was crazy. With four kids & a business to run, my brain capacity is precious! Cloud storage is like a digital filing cabinet that tidies itself. It means my partner & I can collaborate on Thrivology Digital projects seamlessly, or I can quickly pull up a research paper for my PhD on any device. It’s about having what you need, when you need it, without the frantic search. Implicitly for: All stages. 5. Smart Time Tracking & Productivity Boosters (e.g., Toggl Track, Clockify, Forest) Why it’s a game-changer: Understanding where your time actually goes is eye-opening. For service-based entrepreneurs, it’s essential for accurate billing. For everyone, it’s about identifying time-sinks & optimising your focus. Some tools even help you stay off distracting websites! Carlene’s Take: As someone juggling an MBA with a baby, then a PhD with a toddler & another baby on the way, I learned the hard way that time is my most precious, non-renewable resource. I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps, I’m the first Carlene Nisbett, & that means finding what works for me! Time tracking isn't about being a slave to the clock; it's about gaining awareness. It helps you see if you're spending too long on low-impact tasks & empowers you to make conscious choices about where to direct your energy. It’s like giving yourself a performance review for your focus – & then strategising how to improve. Like I always say, successful people have libraries, the rest have big screen TVs. Implicitly for: Foundation Builders (to understand effort) & Scaling Leaders (for team efficiency & profitability). 6. Client Relationship Management (CRM) - Simplified (e.g., HubSpot Free, Zoho CRM, Notion as a DIY) Why it’s a game-changer: Even if you’re just starting out, keeping track of your leads, clients, & your interactions with them is vital. A simple CRM can help you nurture relationships, remember important details, & ensure no potential client falls through the cracks. Carlene’s Take: When you’re trying to remember who said what, who needs a follow-up, & what your last conversation was about for multiple prospects, all while also remembering if it's 'dress as a pirate day' at school, you need a system! A CRM doesn’t have to be complicated. Even a simple, well-organised system can make you look & feel incredibly professional & ensure you’re giving every lead the attention they deserve. For those of you in our Momentum Coaching Page programme, you know how crucial this is for scaling client acquisition without dropping balls. Plus as I always say, "Money loves purpose. Money loves clarity, decisiveness." Implicitly for: Foundation Builders (simple setup) to Scaling Leaders (more robust features). 7. Secure Password Manager (e.g., LastPass, 1Password) Why it’s a game-changer: In today’s digital world, we have countless logins. Trying to remember them all (or worse, using the same weak password everywhere) is a security nightmare & a massive time drain when you inevitably have to reset them. Carlene’s Take: This one is a simple but profound sanity-saver. As entrepreneurs, we’re often juggling multiple platforms for ourselves & our clients. A password manager not only boosts your security massively but also saves you those frustrating minutes (that add up!) of "what on earth was the password for this?!" It’s a small thing that makes a big difference to your daily flow. Think of it as instant access to all your digital keys, securely. Implicitly for: All stages. Essential for everyone. 8. Dynamic Note-Taking & Knowledge Hub (e.g., Notion, Evernote, Roam Research) Why it’s a game-changer: For the Femmeprenista with a million ideas, ongoing projects, client notes, & content inspiration, a digital note-taking app that’s more than just a blank page is revolutionary. These tools can become your personal or team knowledge base. Carlene’s Take: My brain is constantly buzzing with ideas – for Femmeprenista, for my PhD, for what to make the kids for dinner! A flexible tool like Notion is where I can capture, organise, & connect these thoughts. It’s not just for to-do lists; it can be your content calendar, your SOP repository, your research hub. It’s about creating a system for your thoughts & knowledge so they can serve you effectively, rather than just swirling around & causing overwhelm. As Simon Sinek says, "People don't buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it." It’s about creating efficient systems for your knowledge, helping you work smarter. Implicitly for: All stages, especially those who are content-heavy or managing complex information. 9. Automated Scheduling Tool (e.g., Calendly, Acuity Scheduling) Why it’s a game-changer: The back-&-forth of trying to find a meeting time that works for everyone is a huge time suck. An automated scheduler syncs with your calendar, shows your availability, & lets clients or collaborators book themselves in. Carlene’s Take: This is one of the first pieces of automation I recommend. The amount of time I used to spend saying "Does Tuesday at 2 work? No? How about Wednesday at 10?" was ridiculous. Now, people can just book a slot that works for them, payments can be taken, reminders are sent – all without me lifting a finger. It’s a perfect example of a simple system that reclaims your time & makes you look incredibly professional. This enables me to make time to enjoy those "pottery cup" moments with my daughters. More time for strategy, less time on admin – yes please! Implicitly for: All stages, especially service-based entrepreneurs. 10. Accessible Design Tool (e.g., Canva) Why it’s a game-changer: In the online space, visuals matter. Whether it’s for social media posts, presentations, lead magnets, or website graphics, having a tool that empowers you to create professional-looking designs without being a graphic designer is invaluable. Carlene’s Take: Back when I studied Fashion Design with Marketing at UEL, the tools were so much more complex. Now, something like Canva has democratised design. It allows you to quickly create beautiful, on-brand assets, which is essential for your marketing. Canva helps you to put that creative flair into action efficiently. This helped us to increase social media engagement by 15% back at Thrivology Digital when it first launched. As Rory Sutherland said, "Stories are the PDF files of human information.” It saves you money on hiring out every little thing, especially when you’re starting out, & gives you control over your brand’s visual identity. Implicitly for: All stages. Proactive Tech Adoption: Taking Ownership of Your 2025 Efficiency Choosing the right remote work software isn't just a technical decision; it's a strategic one. It's an investment in your efficiency, your sanity, & your ability to build a business that truly flourishes with your life. As we head into 2025, I encourage you to proactively assess your current tech stack. Like I always say, you literally get paid to evolve! Here are your next steps: Step 1: Audit your tech stack. What’s working brilliantly & what's costing you time? What are the key features for the tool? Step 2: Identify bottlenecks. Pinpoint manual tasks draining your time & energy that could be streamlined or automated. Use a time tracking software to identify key bottlenecks. Step 3: Research solutions. Explore 3 potential tools from this list or others to solve a specific pain point. Ask key questions, like how does this tool meet my objectives? Are there any testimonials or reviews? Remember, the goal isn't to adopt every tool out there, but to thoughtfully select the ones that will best support your unique journey & your vision for holistic success. It’s about taking ownership of your operational efficiency. These tools are enablers. They help you implement those smart systems that give you back time & energy, allowing you to focus on what you do best: serving your clients, growing your business, & living a life you love, beautiful chaos & all. If you're looking to dive deeper into leveraging tech & AI for your business, you might find more inspiration by exploring content on Systems & Productivity . Ultimately, strategic tech adoption is about empowerment. It's about giving yourself the best possible foundation to not just manage the juggle, but to truly thrive within it. As Obama said, "We are the change we have been waiting for.” These tools are enablers. They help you implement those smart systems that give you back time & energy, allowing you to focus on what you do best: serving your clients, growing your business, & living a life you love, beautiful chaos & all. Feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the tech options, or just unsure where to start with building the foundational systems for your brilliant business idea? That's completely normal! - Build a Business That Speaks for Itself
Tired of Proving Yourself? Build a Business That Speaks for Itself Let’s be honest, ladies. How many times have you felt like you’re stuck in a never-ending loop of having to prove your competence? You launch a brilliant new offer, only to be met with raised eyebrows and a subtle, "But are you sure you can handle this?" You land a major client, and instead of congratulations, you get questions about how you’ll juggle it all (because, you know, life can be a lot). It's exhausting, right? Like trying to get ready for a client call while simultaneously preventing my toddler from using the dog's water bowl as a bath – ending up with one contact lens in and a very soggy rug. Even now, after building Femmeprenista and navigating the complexities of a PhD while raising four kids, I still sometimes encounter that lingering need to justify my expertise. It's crazy, isn't it? Like, haven't I earned my stripes yet?! You’re not alone. It's a pervasive double standard. Men in business are often granted instant credibility, while we, as female entrepreneurs, face this constant "prove it again" pressure. It's like the universe expects us to perform miracles on a daily basis, all while maintaining some semblance of sanity! I definitely felt this during my MBA. Picture this: trying to present a group project after pulling an all-nighter, fuelled by lukewarm coffee, with my toddler's favourite TV show (not Dora this time, but something equally catchy!) playing on repeat in my head. There were moments of profound self-doubt, where I questioned if I could really handle it all. But I pushed through, reminding myself why I started – for the freedom and fulfillment that entrepreneurship offered. And guess what? I did it! It wasn't easy – there were tears, tantrums (mine and the kids'), and many late nights fuelled by copious amounts of coffee – but I emerged stronger, more confident, and with a renewed sense of purpose. Stop Seeking Approval, Start Owning Your Wins Imagine this: You're finally launching that online course you've poured your heart and soul into. You've meticulously planned the content, designed the sales page, and even managed to record the modules amidst the daily whirlwind of kids, pets, and life. But instead of celebrating this huge win, you’re consumed by what others might think. Will they judge your pricing? Will they question your expertise? Will they think you’re “spreading yourself too thin”? That's the "prove it again" loop whispering in your ear. It tells you that your worth depends on external approval. But what if you could silence that voice and instead, celebrate your damn self? What if you could look at that finished course and say, "Yes, I did that! And it's bloody brilliant!" That’s the shift I want to help you make. It’s not about arrogance; it's about owning your hard work, recognising your inherent value, and defining success based on what truly matters to you. Is it financial freedom? More time with your family? The satisfaction of making a real impact? Define your metrics and celebrate every milestone that moves you closer to them. Building a Business That Speaks Volumes So, how do you break free from this cycle and build a business that speaks for itself? If you're a Foundation Builder, feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to start, these steps are especially for you. Focus on Impact, Not Just Impressions: What problem are you solving for your clients? What transformation are you facilitating? Let that be the focus of your marketing, not just vanity metrics or what others are doing. This is all about attracting clients who align with your energy. I truly believe when your core focus is on how you're impacting the lives of your ideal clients by solving a genuine problem for them, your authentic passion naturally shines through, attracting those who are truly aligned. For example, in my research on Black female entrepreneurship, I've seen firsthand how businesses that prioritize genuine impact build stronger, more loyal client bases and achieve greater long-term success. Just the other day I was speaking to a client who shared how focusing on the positive change she was creating for her community helped her overcome crippling self-doubt & finally raise her prices. It's like Simon Sinek says, "People don't buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it." Systems Are Your Superpower: This is where efficient systems come into play. • Streamline your processes, creating clear step-by-step workflows for everything from client onboarding to content creation. • Automate repetitive tasks. Think email sequences, social media scheduling, even basic customer service responses – AI can be a game-changer here! • Build a solid foundation that allows your business to run smoothly, even when life throws curveballs (because let’s face it, it will!). Imagine a simple project management system, like Trello or Asana, that keeps all your tasks, deadlines, and important information organized in one place. How much calmer would that make you feel? A robust system will save you time, energy, and sanity, and frees you to actually do what you do best. As my husband always says, "Hard work beats intelligence when it is smart work." Remember, when I was studying for my MBA at Cranfield with my then-little one at home, creating efficient systems, and even delegating when possible, became absolutely essential for my sanity. I literally wouldn't have survived without them! Own Your Expertise: You have valuable knowledge & skills, even if you don’t feel like a “guru”. Don't downplay your achievements or undercharge for your services. • Create a "Wins" document. List every accomplishment, big or small. This could include positive client feedback ("My clients consistently tell me how much my coaching has transformed their businesses & lives, which is incredibly fulfilling."), successful projects ("Successfully launched my first online course to a sold-out group of amazing women!"), or even mastering a new skill ("Finally figured out how to use Canva to create stunning graphics for my social media. Feeling so empowered!"). • Refer to this document when setting your rates or crafting your marketing messages to remind yourself of your value. Remember, you are not replaceable. Your unique blend of experience and perspective is your strength. Reflecting back on my early business venture with my former business partner, and even the pivotal experience of my father vehemently advocating for me when I was unfairly silenced at school, I've learnt that my voice is my power, and I am more capable than I sometimes give myself credit for. As Lisa Nichols says, "Don’t allow people to dim your shine because they are blinded. Tell them to put on some sunglasses." Celebrate Your Wins, Big & Small: Launched a new website? Landed your first client? Finally figured out how to automate your email sequence? Celebrate it! Acknowledge your progress & give yourself credit for the hard work you’re putting in. As the great Paulo Coelho said, “When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.” Building a successful business is a marathon, not a sprint (and honestly, who has time for sprinting when you're navigating school runs, client calls, and the occasional puppy-induced chaos?). - 7 Hilarious Entrepreneurship Parallels: Toddlerhood & Mum Business
From Tantrums to Triumphs: The Hilariously True Parallels Between Toddlers & Entrepreneurship Let’s be honest, being an entrepreneur can feel like herding cats, only the cats are tiny humans with ever-changing demands & a penchant for smearing peanut butter on absolutely everything. Sound familiar, Foundation Builders? Thought so! & if you're a mum trying to build a business amidst the beautiful chaos of family life, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It's a rollercoaster, isn't it? One minute you're nailing that sales pitch, the next you're negotiating a hostage situation involving a rogue crayon & a freshly painted wall. One particularly memorable morning – and this is a cringe, but true story – I was about to jump on a coaching call, all prepped & professional, when my toddler decided the perfect moment to stage a "poo-nami" of epic proportions. Let's just say, there was a significant clean-up operation involved, and I joined the call slightly flustered, with a faint aroma of baby wipes lingering in the air. It’s the unglamorous reality of the juggle, isn't it? Foundation Builders, you know the drill! (Although, full disclosure: I’d never do anything client-facing with the kids actually around. Professionalism, people!). But here's the thing I've learned, both through building Femmeprenista (whilst also juggling four kids, two dogs – Espresso & Cappuccino, the hyperactive puppy & her more relaxed mum – & a PhD, by the way… talk about a juggling act!) & through my 13+ years in the corporate world, including nearly a decade at Apple & a stint at Electrolux (where, in one particularly intense quarter – right after returning from maternity leave with my second, actually – I spearheaded a new marketing campaign for a range of innovative kitchen appliances, applying some of Rory Sutherland’s principles of perceived value, and, despite initial skepticism from some senior team members, it increased sales by 15% – a real triumph amidst the corporate chaos!): there are surprisingly insightful parallels between navigating the unpredictable world of toddlers & the equally unpredictable world of entrepreneurship. & embracing these parallels, finding the humour in the chaos, can be your secret weapon. It’s really funny, because it’s so true! The Toddler CEO: Master of Disruption & Adaptability Ever tried sticking to a rigid schedule with a toddler, Foundation Builders? You plan a perfectly timed nap, a nutritious lunch, a productive play session... & then BAM! Nappy explosion. Or a sudden, inconsolable meltdown because the blue cup, not the green one, is required right this very second . Your meticulously crafted schedule is out the window, & you're pivoting faster than you can say "Dora the Explorer." Entrepreneurship is exactly the same. You create a detailed business plan, map out your marketing strategy, set ambitious revenue goals… & then the market shifts. A competitor launches a similar product. A global pandemic (remember that little curveball?) throws everything into disarray. Or, on a smaller scale, your carefully crafted email campaign gets flagged as spam. & just like with the toddler tantrum, you have to adapt, re-strategize, & find a creative solution fast . It's a "if you don't laugh, you'll cry" kind of situation, Foundation Builders! Embracing the Beautiful Mess: It’s All About Mindset The key takeaway here? Rigidity is the enemy of both toddler management & entrepreneurial success. Meticulous planning is essential, yes – my corporate background drilled that into me. But so too is the ability to be flexible, to roll with the punches, & to find the funny side of things when your carefully laid plans go up in smoke (sometimes literally, if you’ve ever left a toddler unsupervised with a box of matches – thankfully, I haven't!). This is where mindset comes in – what we at Femmeprenista call Focus . It's about shifting from a place of frustration & overwhelm ("Why is this happening to me?!") to a place of empowered adaptability ("Okay, this is happening. How can I make this work?"). It's about recognising that detours & disruptions are inevitable, & often lead to unexpected breakthroughs. Just like that time my youngest finally learned to use the potty – not during planned potty training sessions, but during a spontaneous game of hide-&-seek. Sometimes, letting go of control & embracing the "beautiful mess" is the fastest way forward. I think this is because when things are less structured, when we’re not pushing ourselves, things can come more naturally. There have been moments, especially juggling my PhD research with two little ones, when I've felt utterly swamped. Like that time my partner & I were both facing deadlines, the toddler was going through a sleep regression, & the baby decided 4am was playtime. I vividly remember thinking, “How am I supposed to do any focused work in this chaos?" It felt like I was drowning in to-do lists. What pulled me through? Breaking down the overwhelm into tiny, manageable steps, focusing on just one thing at a time. It wasn't pretty, but it got done. It reminded me of the "tortoise & the hare" – slow & steady wins the race, especially in the entrepreneurial marathon! It’s about combining hard work with smart work. This resonates with what I’m seeing in my ongoing doctoral research into women’s entrepreneurship, too – resourcefulness and adaptability are key themes. Time Management for Jugglers: Practical Strategies from the Trenches So, how do you practically navigate this daily rollercoaster, Foundation Builders, whether you’re dealing with demanding toddlers or demanding clients (or, let’s face it, both)? Here are a few strategies I’ve learned from the trenches, specifically tailored for those of you just starting out: Prioritize Ruthlessly: Just like you can’t do everything when you’re juggling four kids & a PhD, you can’t do everything in your business when you're a Foundation Builder. Identify your most important tasks – the ones that move the needle – & focus on those. Delegate or ditch the rest. This is something I always questioned, even when feeling like a "replaceable cog" in the corporate world (in one role, my manager actually told us point blank “You’re all replaceable!” – talk about demotivating!). I was always thinking… "Is this the best way of doing things?" That's something you should ask yourself, Foundation Builders. What’s one thing you can take off your plate today? Maybe outsource it, or simply let it go? Time Blocking is Your Best Friend: Carve out specific blocks of time for focused work, even if they're short. Even 25 minutes of uninterrupted work can be surprisingly productive. & build in buffer time for the inevitable toddler interruptions or client emergencies. Yes, those 12-13 weeks of school holidays are a challenge – believe me, I know! – but building in buffer time throughout the year, anticipating these periods, can make a huge difference. How much buffer time can you realistically build in next week, Foundation Builders? Could you swap a 30-minute scroll through Instagram for a focused work sprint? Embrace Smart Systems & Automation ( Flow ): Implement efficient systems to streamline your processes, perhaps by leveraging smart AI tools. This might mean automating your email marketing using tools like Mailchimp, using a scheduling tool like Calendly to manage appointments, or creating templates in Canva for client onboarding. Anything that takes a repetitive task off your plate frees up precious time & energy. For instance, Jasper.ai, which relates to the Fusion pillar of our Business Flourish Framework, can help with content creation or copywriting tasks (leaving you free to wrangle toddlers or, you know, actually think strategically!), while tools like Zapier automate workflows between different apps. This is all about Flow within your business, ensuring things run smoothly & efficiently. What’s one system you can implement this week to save yourself an hour, Foundation Builders? Don't Forget to Fuel Yourself ( Fuel ): Prioritising your well-being is non-negotiable, Foundation Builders, especially when you’re constantly juggling. This means getting enough sleep (as much as possible with little ones!), eating nutritious food (even if most of it ends up on the floor), & taking short breaks throughout the day to recharge. Batch cooking on Sundays has been a lifesaver for me, freeing up precious weeknight time. Remember, you can't pour from an empty cup. Even a five-minute meditation or a quick walk outside can make a world of difference. Fuel is the engine that keeps you going – don’t neglect it, Foundation Builders. What’s one small act of self-care you can schedule for tomorrow? From Overwhelm to Empowerment Remember, Foundation Builders, the entrepreneurial journey, much like toddlerhood, is not a linear path. There will be tantrums (yours & theirs!), there will be setbacks, there will be moments when you question everything. But there will also be triumphs, breakthroughs, & those incredible moments of pure joy when you realize just how far you’ve come. It is what it is! & just like those little humans, your business, too, has immense potential for growth, adaptability, & surprising ROI. The key is to embrace the "beautiful chaos," find the humour in the unexpected, & keep moving forward, one messy, magnificent step at a time. - Mindset Coach for Scaling: Ambitious Mums Unlock Growth
The Scaling Paradox: Why Your Proven Business Acumen Needs a Mindset Coach to Truly Soar (And How Ambitious Mums Can Make it Work) Ever felt like you're pedalling furiously, doing all the “right” strategic things in your business – the marketing, the systems, the client delivery – yet somehow, you’ve hit an invisible wall? You’re a smart, accomplished entrepreneur. You’ve built something amazing, navigated the early hurdles, & have the business acumen to prove it. But now, as you try to scale, that momentum feels…stuck. Frustrating, isn’t it? If this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing what I call the “Scaling Paradox.” It’s that perplexing place where your business strategies are sound, your ambition is burning bright, but your growth has plateaued, or the overwhelm is threatening to engulf you. & here’s the kicker, lovely: often, the barrier isn’t in your business plan; it’s in your mindset. The very drive & thinking that got you here might need a significant upgrade to get you there – to that next level of impact, income, & dare I say it, ease. As a CEO, a mum to four, & someone deeply immersed in the world of female entrepreneurship (right down to my PhD research!), I’ve seen this paradox play out time & time again. & I’ve learned that for us ambitious women, especially those of us juggling the beautiful chaos of motherhood, acknowledging & addressing this "mindset ceiling" is not just important – it's fundamental to truly soaring. The Invisible Wall: When Your Business Brain Says ‘Yes’ But Your Gut Screams ‘No!’ So, what is this mindset ceiling? It's that point where your proven business knowledge tells you one thing (e.g., "I need to hire a team," "I must raise my prices," "It’s time to step into bigger visibility"), but an internal governor, a collection of old beliefs, fears, or unresolved narratives, slams on the brakes. I remember coaching a client, let’s call her Sarah. Sarah is an absolutely brilliant marketing strategist – her clients adored her, & her results spoke for themselves. Sarah, a brand strategist for ethical fashion brands, had a solid plan to double her revenue, which involved taking on associate consultants & positioning herself as a premium agency owner. On paper, it was flawless. She knew what to do. Yet, every time she tried to action the plan – to write the job descriptions, to announce her new premium packages – she’d freeze. She’d find herself lost in a whirlwind of “what ifs,” procrastinating with busywork, or suddenly feeling like a complete fraud despite her track record. Sarah hadn’t run out of business know-how; she’d hit her current mindset capacity. The thought of leading a team, of charging significantly more (even though her value justified it), of being that much more visible, tapped into deep-seated fears of failure, judgment, & not being “good enough.” Her past success, built on her individual brilliance & hard work, had inadvertently masked these underlying limitations until the demands of scaling brought them to the surface. More Than Just Strategy: Why Your Inner Game is Your Greatest Scaling Lever Now, don’t get me wrong. Having exceptional marketing that truly speaks to your ideal client, & streamlined systems that allow your business to run smoothly (perhaps even leveraging smart AI tools to truly streamline your processes!) are absolutely vital for scaling. These are the kinds of practical strategies we dive deep into at Femmeprenista. But what I’ve seen, both in my own journey & with countless clients, is that these external strategies can only take you so far if your internal operating system isn’t equipped for the next level. It’s about cultivating that robust & resilient inner game. It's about taking profound personal responsibility for how you manage the increased pressure that comes with growth, how you make those bolder, scarier decisions, & how you navigate the often-intense juggle of a thriving business & a demanding family life without succumbing to burnout. This emphasis on inner game is a core component of our Femmeprenista Business Flourish Framework: Build a Thriving Biz , particularly because we know that focus, clarity, & resilience are essential to sustainable success. It's not just about the 'what' & 'how' but also the 'who' – you, the leader. For ambitious mothers, this is especially critical. The mental load is already immense. Scaling a business adds another significant layer. Without a consciously cultivated mindset – one that champions your well-being, helps you set boundaries, & allows you to lead from a place of calm confidence rather than frazzled reactivity – the "beautiful chaos" can quickly tip into just plain chaos. While mindset is crucial at every stage, as we discuss in our broader approach to Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose , its role becomes uniquely pivotal during scaling when the stakes, & the pressures, are higher. Unlocking Your Next Level: Common Mindset Hurdles for Scaling Leaders (And How a Coach Helps You Leap Them) When you’re a Scaling Leader, the mindset gremlins that show up are often more sophisticated than the early-stage ones. They’re sneakier, because you’ve already achieved a certain level of success. Reflections informed by my ongoing PhD research often highlight that the more successful you become, the more creative your "inner critic" becomes! Here are a few I see regularly: Imposter Syndrome’s Older Sibling: You’ve hit consistent five-figure months, maybe even six or seven figures annually. You have testimonials out the wazoo. & yet… that nagging voice whispers, "You’re just lucky," or "When are they going to find out you don’t really know what you’re doing?" It’s exhausting, isn’t it? Actionable Strategy: Challenge the thought by creating a "success file" of positive feedback, testimonials, & achievements to review when self-doubt creeps in. Pro-Tip: Add a client win or rave review to it every Friday so it's always up to date! Pro-Tip: Add a client win or rave review to it every Friday so it's always up to date! The Fear of Letting Go (aka Delegation Phobia): You know you can’t do it all. Your business brain screams, "Delegate!" But the thought of handing over tasks, trusting someone else with your "baby," or (whisper it) them not doing it exactly like you… it’s terrifying. This isn't just about control; it's often tied to self-worth & a fear of not being indispensable. Actionable Strategy: Start small by delegating one repetitive task & create clear Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistency & clarity. For example, create a Loom video walking through exactly how you want a social media graphic made - it's a time investment that pays off! For example, create a Loom video walking through exactly how you want a social media graphic made - it's a time investment that pays off! Premium Pricing Paralysis: You want to attract higher-level clients & create more spaciousness in your business, which means charging premium rates. But the fear of rejection, of not being "worth it," or of alienating your current audience can keep your prices stubbornly, unsustainably low. Actionable Strategy: Reframe your pricing by focusing on the value you provide & the transformation you create for your clients, not just the hours you put in. Calculate the lifetime value of a happy client - that number can radically shift how you view your worth! Calculate the lifetime value of a happy client - that number can radically shift how you view your worth! The Terror of the Bigger Stage: Scaling often means a bigger team, increased visibility, perhaps speaking engagements or a larger online presence. This can trigger anxieties about judgment, criticism, managing more people, or simply being "too much." Actionable Strategy: Visualize yourself confidently navigating the "bigger stage," focusing on the positive impact you can make & the value you can bring to a wider audience. Before your next networking event, take 5 minutes to vividly imagine 3 amazing conversations you'll have! Before your next networking event, take 5 minutes to vividly imagine 3 amazing conversations you'll have! A skilled mindset coach doesn't just offer you a few affirmations & send you on your way. They partner with you to dive deep, to uncover the roots of these fears & limiting beliefs. They help you to gently, compassionately, but firmly dismantle those old narratives & build new, empowering ones. It's about equipping you to step into your leadership with unshakeable conviction. Investing in Your Most Valuable Asset: YOU, The CEO (Especially if You're a Juggling Mum!) I want to be crystal clear: investing in mindset coaching when you’re scaling isn’t a remedial expense for when things are "broken." It is one of the most strategic investments you can make in the continued growth & sustainability of your business, because you are its most critical asset. I remember, even with my MBA & corporate experience, when I started Femmeprenista, I felt a HUGE wave of imposter syndrome when it came to delegation. I was convinced that only I could do things "right," which led to massive overwhelm. It was only when I started working with my own mindset coach that I realized this belief was holding me back from true scale. Think about it. You can have the best strategies, the most cutting-edge tools, but if the CEO (that’s you!) is operating from a place of fear, self-doubt, or overwhelm, the business will inevitably hit a ceiling. This is particularly true for us ambitious mothers. We navigate such unique pressures – the constant pull between our entrepreneurial dreams & our deep love & responsibility for our children. The juggle is real, often relentless, & sometimes, if I'm honest, it feels like I'm spinning plates while riding a unicycle during my PhD studies with a baby & a toddler! This past month, even, I felt that familiar "delegation phobia" creep in again as I prepped for my PhD proposal deadline. The solution? Stepping back, reminding myself why I built this business in the first place (the autonomy, the impact!), & yes, leaning on my own coach for a quick mindset reset. This helped me re-focus on the bigger picture. To counter these feelings that lead to overwhelm, remember the Business Flourish Framework: Female Entrepreneurs' Blueprint for Success : FOCUS: Identify your specific "Mindset Ceiling" What are the unique-to-you beliefs, fears, or patterns that are currently capping your growth? FLAIR: Upgrade Your Internal Operating System. Create strategies, tools, & new perspectives to consciously replace outdated thinking with empowering beliefs that support your next level. FLOW: Embody True Leadership Presence. Ensure you learn to lead yourself, your team & your clients from a place of authenticity, confidence, & vision. Working with a mindset coach is an act of profound personal responsibility. It’s saying, "I am committed to becoming the leader my business & my family need me to be." It’s about equipping yourself with the internal fortitude to not only build a business that scales impressively but also one that deeply aligns with your vision for a fulfilling, joyful life – a life where your business energises you rather than drains you. It’s about learning to work smart, to lead from your strengths, & to build resilience that allows you to weather the inevitable storms of entrepreneurship & motherhood with grace & power. So, How Does Mindset Coaching Actually *Work* for Scaling? It’s not magic, but it can feel pretty magical when you start to see the shifts! In essence, working with a mindset coach focused on scaling involves: Identifying Your Specific "Mindset Ceiling": What are the unique-to-you beliefs, fears, or patterns that are currently capping your growth? Upgrading Your Internal Operating System: Co-creating practical strategies, tools, & new perspectives to consciously replace outdated thinking with empowering beliefs that support your next level. For example, we might replace "I have to do everything myself" with "I trust my team to deliver excellent results." Building Unshakeable Resilience: Developing the capacity to handle the increased pressure, complexity, & uncertainty that comes with a scaling business. Embodying True Leadership Presence: Learning to lead yourself, your team (if you have one), & your clients from a place of authenticity, confidence, & vision. Cultivating Courage for Bolder Moves: Giving you the support & accountability to make those strategic leaps you know you need to make but have been too hesitant to attempt. It’s about having a dedicated partner who holds the space for your growth, challenges you lovingly, & champions your highest potential, even when you can’t quite see it yourself. The truth is, your business acumen has gotten you far, & that’s incredible. But to truly soar, to build a business that not only scales but also sustains you & brings you deep joy, that next leap often requires a profound shift from within. It requires you to become the next evolution of yourself as a leader. Are you ready to stop hitting that invisible wall & start building the business & life you truly deserve? - Work-Life Harmony: Tips for Female Entrepreneurs (2025)
Work-Life Harmony: Ditching the Balance Myth & Embracing the Beautiful Chaos Right, let's be honest, the whole "work-life balance" thing? It’s a myth – especially for us mums juggling businesses, families, and, well, life . It's like trying to perfectly balance a toddler on one hip, a laptop on the other, and a steaming cuppa (that’s probably gone cold) in your hand. Spoiler alert: it usually ends with a spilled drink and a whole lot of chaos. But what if I told you there’s a better way? Forget balance. Let’s talk harmony. Female entrepreneurs, business moms, especially us millennials – we get it. Work-life harmony is the real deal, not that elusive balance everyone chases. Business Coaching for Female Entrepreneurs is all about finding that sweet spot. See, balance implies this static, perfect state. Like everything has its neatly assigned place & time. But life, especially entrepreneurial life with kids, isn't neat. It’s dynamic. It’s like my two-year-old deciding the perfect moment to stage a dramatic protest against wearing shoes just as I'm about to start a client call (thankfully, client-facing stuff is always child & pet-free zones!). It’s the constant background hum of, well, let’s just say it’s Bluey on repeat these days – anyone else relate? You know that feeling, right? It’s all part of the beautiful chaos! A Business Coach can help you navigate this. True harmony isn't about compartmentalizing or trying to rigidly control everything. It’s about integration. It’s about aligning your values, priorities, and actions across all areas – work, family, you . And yes, that includes embracing the beautiful chaos. Honestly, this is a key principle I explore with the women I coach in my Momentum program – it's about building a business that truly works with your life, not against it. This approach has been a game changer for me, & I know it can be for you too. Why "Balance" Sets You Up to Fail (and What to Do Instead) The traditional "balance" advice often focuses on dividing your time into neat little boxes – work time, family time, me time. But how often does that actually work? Life spills over. Deadlines loom. Kids get sick. The puppy decides your new planner is a chew toy (Cappuccino, really?). Suddenly, your perfectly balanced schedule is in tatters. It’s like planting a garden, carefully tending to it, and forgetting to water it. What happens? It withers. Same with your business - and your well-being – you’ve got to nurture it consistently. A Business Coach for Women understands this. The problem with striving for this mythical "balance" is that it sets you up for constant disappointment and a nagging feeling of guilt. You’re either not working hard enough, not being present enough with your kids, or not taking enough time for yourself. It's exhausting & frankly, unsustainable. You end up feeling like that Little Red Hen, doing all the work yourself, while everyone else is chilling. Business Coaching can offer support. My own journey, juggling four kids, a PhD, & this whole Femmeprenista adventure, has taught me that harmony, not balance, is a far more realistic & sustainable goal for female entrepreneurs & business moms. My path, as I always say, is slower and harder. People sometimes question my sanity - undergrad with a newborn, MBA with a toddler, now a PhD with two under two! - but I'm not giving up. I'm still here, still learning, still growing. It’s like the tortoise and the hare, right? Slow & steady wins the race. As long as you're moving forward, taking ownership of your journey, the pace is yours to define. I'm living proof of that. Even with four kids and a PhD, I'm building my dream. This belief in personal responsibility is woven throughout everything we do at Femmeprenista. I wouldn't trade the beautiful chaos of my family for anything, but it definitely makes things more… interesting. So, how do we create this harmony? This is where the Business Flourish Framework really comes into its own. It’s all about setting a clear, focused vision (Focus), developing marketing strategies (Flair) that align with your values, streamlining your systems (Flow), and making your well-being (Fuel) a non-negotiable priority. And interwoven through all of this is Fusion, the strategic integration of AI to amplify your efforts and create even more space for what matters. You’ve got to have a strong foundation – your mindset, your marketing, your systems. And it all starts with… you guessed it… Focus . It’s not just about mindset; it’s about actively shaping your mindset to become the CEO of your life & business. How We Work Page Integrating, Not Isolating: Making it Work in the Real World Harmony is about integrating all the pieces of your life, not isolating them. This means finding ways to blend your business with your family, not pretending they exist in separate universes. It means having systems so robust that even when life throws curveballs (and it will ), you can adapt. It's work-life integration – making the pieces fit together, even when it’s messy. For instance, reflections from my ongoing PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship highlight how crucial support systems are for women business owners. It’s not just about the theory; it’s the lived experience. A common theme is the struggle to secure consistent, reliable support – whether it’s childcare, family help, or even just having someone to bounce ideas off of. Finding creative solutions within your own context is key. Here are a few practical tips for business moms & female entrepreneurs, especially Foundation Builders, to create more work-life harmony: Time Blocking with Soul: Don’t just block time for work; block time for family dinners, school plays, dog walks – the things that fuel your soul. Treat these commitments with the same respect you would a client meeting. Think of it as scheduling appointments with your most important clients – your family. I completely messed this up once, scheduling a client call during my six-year-old's school play. The guilt was real . I learned a hard lesson that day about honoring my commitments, even the non-business ones. To make this truly actionable: sit down with your calendar right now & schedule one soul-filling activity for this week. Block it out like a meeting with your CEO – because, well, you are! Boundary Boss: Set clear boundaries around work hours, especially client-facing time (like I said, no kids or chaotic puppies allowed!). This signals to both your family & yourself that these times are sacred. This also includes setting boundaries with well-meaning family or friends who might unintentionally disrupt your schedule. I vividly remember a time my mum promised to take my teenage daughter to school - it was in the calendar, we'd discussed it - and then five minutes before we were due to leave... “Oh, did I say Tuesday? I thought it was Wednesday!”. Cue a frantic rush, a missed deadline, & a whole lot of stress. Boundaries are crucial – it’s about setting clear expectations & having those sometimes-difficult conversations, especially when relying on others. Start small: set one boundary this week (like turning off notifications after 7pm). How will that create more space for you ? Tech as Your Ally: Implement efficient systems & leverage technology – AI is your secret weapon. Explore smart AI tools to streamline your processes, freeing up your time for strategic work or simply being present with your kids. This is what our Fusion pillar is all about – integrating AI strategically. For example, tools like Jasper or ChatGPT can help you automate content creation or draft emails, freeing up your time. Then delegate or ditch what’s not serving you. It’s about working smarter , not just harder – a key principle for any business coach. I’ve found that having clear systems – like using Trello for project management or scheduling client calls via Calendly – really helps me stay on track & reduces the mental clutter. I'll admit, I struggled massively with time blocking when I first started. It felt rigid, unnatural, and like yet another thing to "fail" at. But over time, I tweaked it to fit my life, not the other way around. Now, it's a lifesaver! What’s one tech tool or system you could explore this week to make life easier? Micro-Moments of Me Time: You don’t need a spa day to recharge (though those are amazing – definitely on my "rich life" vision board!). Find those stolen moments – a quiet cuppa while the kids are (miraculously) occupied, a quick walk with Cappuccino & Espresso (assuming they haven't decided to re-landscape the garden), five minutes of mindful breathing in the bathroom while hiding from the chaos. Small acts of self-care, consistently applied, make a huge difference. Business Coaching for Female Entrepreneurs emphasizes this. It’s like what Lisa Nichols says, "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows. Then you can serve others, joyfully, from your saucer." What’s your go-to micro-moment of self-care? Share it below! The Power of Connection: Remember, you’re not alone in this juggling act. Connect with other female entrepreneurs who get it . Femme:Connect Community Page From Limiting Beliefs to Limitless Possibilities One of the biggest obstacles to harmony is often internal. We tell ourselves stories: “I’m not good enough,” “I can’t do it all,” “I’ll never have enough time/money/support.” These limiting beliefs can be crippling. It’s like trying to run a marathon with weights tied to your ankles. You might get there eventually, but it’s going to be a painful & unnecessarily difficult journey. According to a study by Xero, 60% of small business owners struggle with work-life balance https://www.xero.com/uk/resources/small-business-guides/wellbeing/ , which reinforces that this isn’t just a “you” problem – and that there are effective ways to tackle it. Shifting these beliefs is often the most important work you’ll do. It’s about recognizing those stories and then actively rewriting them. It's an identity shift, a core principle of what I call "Identity Alchemy", and something we work on extensively in my Momentum Coaching programme. Ask yourself, “What would the confident, successful version of me believe in this situation?” It’s about embracing the power you have to design your life, your business, your own version of harmony. Here's a tangible exercise to get started: Identify the Belief: Write down one limiting belief that’s holding you back. Be specific (e.g., "I'm not tech-savvy enough to automate my business"). Challenge the Belief: Ask yourself, “Is this actually true? What evidence supports this? What evidence contradicts it?” Reframe the Belief: Rewrite the limiting belief in an empowering way (e.g., "I am capable of learning and implementing the tech I need to streamline my business. I can ask for help and invest in resources to support me."). For example, take the fear of not being a "tech expert." So many women, especially Foundation Builders just starting out, tell me this! It's okay if you're not. The beauty of the digital age is that there are so many accessible tools & resources. And if you're in our Spark programme, we break it down step-by-step so you don’t feel overwhelmed. It’s like what Tony Robbins says, "It's not knowing what to do, it's doing what you know." So ditch the self-doubt & jump in! Spark Programme Page Ready to Ditch the Myth & Embrace Your Harmony? Work-life harmony isn’t a destination; it’s an ongoing journey. It’s about constant tweaking, adapting, and re-aligning as your life & business evolve. It’s about embracing the beautiful chaos & celebrating the small wins along the way. It’s not always easy, but trust me, it’s worth it. You've got this! Building a business & a family at the same time? It's a marathon, not a sprint. What’s one tiny action you can take today to move closer to your own version of harmony? Share it below – let’s inspire each other! - Strategic Idea Validation Mumpreneurs: Ask Tough Questions & Flourish
Strategic Idea Validation for Mumpreneurs: Asking the Tough Questions to Build a Business That Truly Flourishes Alright lovely, let’s have a real kitchen-table chat. You’ve got that brilliant business idea buzzing around your head, haven’t you? That little spark that keeps you up at night (in a good way, mostly!), dreaming of the impact you could make, the freedom it could bring. As a mum, I know that drive to create something meaningful, something that not only provides for our families but also fits around them, is incredibly powerful. Honestly, it feels like you’ve got a turbocharger! But here’s where I’m going to gently ask you to pause, take a breath, and pour yourself a cuppa (or something stronger, no judgement here!). As a mumpreneur, I completely get how precious your time is. I also know how easy it is to get swept up in the initial excitement! But, before you dive headfirst into designing logos, building websites, or investing your precious, non-renewable resources of time, energy, & money, we need to talk about something crucial: strategic idea validation strategic idea validation . Ensuring you’re building on solid ground is key to making your entrepreneurial dream a reality. Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Carlene, are you trying to burst my bubble?" Absolutely not! In fact, it’s the complete opposite. Championing the act of asking critical, discerning questions isn’t a sign of doubt; it’s a superpower. It’s an essential exercise in personal responsibility, strategic foresight, & downright smart entrepreneurship. It's about building a resilient foundation from the get-go, so your amazing idea has the best possible chance to not just survive, but truly flourish. At Femmeprenista, we understand the unique journey of female entrepreneurs (as outlined in our Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose ), & that journey, for it to be sustainable and joyful, must begin with a strong, validated idea. My own journey, & the foundation of About Femmeprenista / Carlene Nisbett , is built on making strategic choices – & that always starts with ensuring your core idea is absolutely sound. Why Bother With the Tough Questions? (Especially When You’re Juggling All The Things!) I see you, mama. Your to-do list is already a mile long. You’re chief everything officer of your household, & now you’re adding "visionary entrepreneur" to the mix. So why add more questions to your already full plate? Because: Your Time is Gold Dust: Seriously. As mothers, our time is arguably our most precious commodity. We don’t have endless hours to throw at an idea that isn’t viable. Your Energy is Finite: Juggling kids, home, & a new business venture requires superhuman energy. Let's make sure it’s channelled effectively. Your Money Needs to Work Smart: Whether you're bootstrapping or have savings to invest, every penny counts. Investing in a non-validated idea can be a costly lesson. Avoiding the Heartbreak: There's nothing more soul-crushing than pouring your heart, soul, & savings into a business only to launch to the sound of crickets. Or worse, building something that slowly drains you because it’s not the right fit. Thorough idea validation is about setting yourself up for success, preventing future burnout, & ensuring your venture is truly purpose-driven & profitable. It’s about gaining the clarity & confidence you need to move forward decisively. This process of asking critical questions aligns directly with the 'Focus' pillar of our How We Work / Business Flourish Framework , which emphasizes developing that crystal-clear vision & a resilient mindset right from the outset. I remember an early idea I had – full of passion, of course! It felt so right . But when I sat down & really drilled into who would pay for this very specific service, why they'd choose me, & whether the income potential truly matched the life I wanted to build around my (then smaller) family, the numbers & the energy exchange just didn’t stack up. I even missed asking myself where I'd find these clients – a crucial question that would have revealed the flaw much earlier! And, to be honest, I completely glossed over my tech skills! I had planned to build a whole APP, until I was reminded by my partner I can barely work a laptop with kids running around! Parking that idea, as exciting as it felt initially, was one of the smartest ‘early doors’ decisions I made. It saved me so much potential heartache & freed me up to find the path that did align. It’s really funny, because that early idea felt so right, but by not aligning the potential to my own circumstances, I’m sure I’d have burnt myself out. The Tough (But Totally Worth It!) Questions to Ask Your Business Idea Think of these questions as your friendly interrogation squad – they’re here to help, not hinder! 1. The "Problem Solver" Test: What Real, Juicy Problem Are You Actually Solving? This is the absolute bedrock. Passion is lovely, but businesses thrive by solving genuine problems for people. Is there a real, tangible, maybe even slightly painful problem your ideal client is experiencing? (Not just a mild inconvenience). Who feels this pain most acutely? Get specific. How are they currently trying to solve it? What are the existing solutions, & why aren’t they quite hitting the mark? This is where your opportunity lies. Why does this problem matter to them? What's the deeper impact on their life, work, or well-being? Why this is crucial: If you’re not solving a problem people care enough about to pay to fix, you don’t have a business; you have a hobby (which is fine, but let's be clear on the goal!). Plus, as Adrienne Weimer so wisely shares: "Selling isn't selfish, actually not selling is selfish. Not selling is selfish because it means you're not helping someone today.” We want to make sure you’re able to help those you're meant to serve! For those ready to embrace it, it's about conscious selling, which involves selling from your power, not pressure. Actionable Checklist: ☐ Define the #1 problem you solve. ☐ Identify exactly who feels this pain most acutely. ☐ Research existing solutions & note their shortcomings. ☐ Articulate why solving this matters to your ideal client. 2. The "Audience Connection" Check: Who Are You Really Talking To? "Everyone" is not an audience. The more specific you are, the stronger your connection (& your marketing) will be. Beyond demographics (age, location), what are their deepest dreams, biggest fears, core values, & daily frustrations? Where do they hang out online & offline? What language do they use? What other brands do they love? Are you genuinely passionate about serving this particular group? Your authenticity here will shine through & is foundational for developing your unique marketing messages later on. Why this is crucial: Trying to be everything to everyone means you’ll be nothing special to anyone. Deeply understanding a niche audience allows you to tailor your solution & your message so perfectly that they feel like you’re reading their mind. It’s the difference between vaguely wanting to "help women feel good" & specifically "empowering new mothers returning to the corporate world to reclaim their confidence & career trajectory." See the difference in power? As relationship-building expert, Rory Sutherland, would remind us, "If you want to improve how people feel psychology is a better area for exploration than rational Improvement." This means taking the time to learn what your ideal customer truly feels. Actionable Checklist: ☐ Define your ideal client's top 3 dreams. ☐ Identify their biggest fears related to your area of expertise. ☐ List 3-5 places they spend time online/offline. ☐ Get crystal clear if you're really passionate about serving this audience. 3. The "Uniqueness Factor" Dive: What’s Your Secret Sauce? The world is full of options. Why should they choose you ? How is your solution different or better than what’s already out there? (Hint: It doesn’t always have to be about inventing something brand new. It could be your unique approach, your personal experience, the way you deliver the service, or how you make people feel .) What’s your unique selling proposition (USP)? What’s that one thing that makes you stand out? Can you articulate this difference clearly & compellingly? Why this is crucial: This is where your brand's personality & distinct market position begin to form. Understanding your unique angle will be invaluable when you start thinking about how to present your business to the world & attract those dream clients effortlessly. You need to get so good at what you’re doing that you “Make an offer so good, people feel stupid saying no,” (as the wise Alex Hormozi would say). Actionable Checklist: ☐ List 3-5 ways your solution is different/better. ☐ Craft a one-sentence Unique Selling Proposition (USP). ☐ Ensure your USP is clear, compelling & easy to understand. 4. The "Profitability Potential" Probe: Let’s Talk Money, Honey! A business needs to be financially sustainable. Otherwise, it’s an expensive & ultimately draining passion project. Are people demonstrably willing & able to pay for a solution to the problem you’re solving? Do your research! What are potential price points for your offer? What value does it truly provide? What are the realistic costs involved in setting up & delivering your solution? (Think time, software, materials, marketing etc.) Can you see a clear path to profitability that aligns with your income goals? Why this is crucial: Your business needs to support you & your family. Undercharging or ignoring the financial viability of an idea is a fast track to resentment & burnout. A profitable business, on the other hand, provides the resources & energy to keep serving your clients & living your life. As Jim Rohn so wisely stated, "Learn how to be happy with what you have while you pursue all that you want.” This means having goals to provide for your needs, not just your wants! Actionable Checklist: ☐ Research what similar solutions cost. ☐ Determine the real costs to deliver your offer (time, materials, etc). ☐ Determine your bare minimum price points & desired goal price. ☐ Ensure there's a clear path to profitability aligning with YOUR needs. 5. The "Life Integration" Litmus Test: Does This Business Genuinely Fit Your Beautifully Chaotic Life? This one is HUGE for us mums. A brilliant idea on paper can be a nightmare in reality if it doesn’t integrate with your family life & personal needs. How much time will this business realistically demand of you, especially in the early days? Be brutally honest. What kind of energy does it require? Are you an introvert who thrives on solo creative work, or an extrovert who needs client interaction? Does it require you to be "on" during evenings & weekends when your family needs you most? Can you see yourself doing this, day in & day out, for the long haul? Even on the days when the kids are sick, the dog’s chewed your favourite shoes, & you’ve only had three hours of sleep? Does it align with your core personal values & your vision for your ideal lifestyle? What boundaries will you need to establish to protect your well-being & family time? Why this is crucial: I once toyed with a business model that, on paper, looked fantastic. Great income potential, exciting work. But the delivery would have meant being 'on call' most evenings & many weekends. With my own bustling household & desire to be present for my children, I quickly realised that while the business could have been profitable, the cost to our family life & my own sanity would have been far too high. It’s about finding that sweet spot where your business energises your life, not systematically drains it. This is where true holistic success lies. As Layla Hormozi so insightfully shares, "Your business needs to serve your life, not the other way around. Build systems that give you freedom." 🙏 Studies show that neglecting these factors significantly increases burnout; for instance, a 2018 study in the Journal of Business Venturing found that entrepreneurs experiencing high levels of work-family conflict were significantly more likely to report symptoms of burnout. Actionable Checklist: ☐ Realistically estimate time commitment, especially in early days. ☐ Determine required energy levels (extrovert, introvert, on/off hours). ☐ Assess long-term sustainability & compatibility with family. ☐ Define boundaries needed to protect well-being & family time. 6. The "Passion & Purpose" Reality Check: Is It More Than Just a Fleeting Interest? Passion is a fantastic starting point, but it needs to be backed by purpose & a willingness to do the less glamorous bits too. Is your passion for this idea strong enough to fuel you through the inevitable challenges & setbacks of entrepreneurship? Are you equally committed to the 'business' side of the business – the marketing, the admin, the finances – not just the fun, creative part? What is the deeper 'why' behind this idea? Connecting to your purpose will be your anchor when things get tough. Why this is crucial: Passion can fade when faced with the mundane realities of running a business. A strong sense of purpose, however, provides lasting motivation & resilience, ensuring your business efforts are well-sustained. It’s like, when your “why” is aligned, you can embrace the suck to keep moving forward, even when the passion wanes. As Simon Sinek so potently said, "People don't buy WHAT you do; they buy WHY you do it." Actionable Checklist: ☐ Honestly rate your long-term passion on a scale of 1-10. ☐ Assess commitment to the "business side" (marketing, admin). ☐ Define the deeper "why" driving this venture. So, What If The Answers Aren't All Resounding "Yes!"-es? Please hear me when I say this: these questions are not designed to make you give up on your dreams. They are here to empower you with clarity . If some of your answers are "I don't know," "not really," or even a flat "no," that is incredibly valuable information! It doesn’t necessarily mean your idea is a dud. It means you now know where to focus your efforts: Maybe you need to do more market research. Perhaps your ideal client needs refining. Maybe the solution needs a tweak to make it more unique or profitable. Or perhaps, like my early idea, you realise that while it’s a good idea, it’s not the right idea for you, right now . This is the gift of strategic idea validation: it allows you to pivot, refine, or even confidently park an idea before you’ve poured your soul into it. It helps you build a business on solid ground, with a much greater chance of achieving that profitable, purpose-driven, & life-enhancing success we all crave. If these questions have sparked a desire for deeper support in solidifying your business foundation, getting crystal clear on your niche, & creating an actionable plan, then our Spark Program is designed for exactly this critical stage. Your Brilliant Idea Deserves a Brilliant Foundation Taking the time to strategically validate your business idea is an act of profound self-respect & savvy entrepreneurship. It's about honouring your aspirations by giving them the strongest possible start. It’s about working smart, not just hard – a philosophy we live & breathe here at Femmeprenista. - Female Entrepreneur Beautiful Chaos: A CEO's Guide
Female Entrepreneurs: Taming the Beautiful Chaos – A CEO, PhD Student, & Mum of Four's Guide Hey lovely ladies, Carlene here! Ever feel like you're juggling flaming torches while riding a unicycle, all while trying to look effortlessly chic? Yeah, me too. Being a CEO, tackling a PhD, & navigating the beautiful chaos of raising four kids (with two miniature pinchers who seem to think they're furry tornadoes & my personal workaholic by my side) – it’s a lot . But you know what? It's also incredibly rewarding. & I wouldn't trade it for the world. Truth be told, this isn't my first rodeo with the whole "academia & motherhood" combo. I finished my undergrad with my eldest as a babe in arms, my MBA with my second little one toddling around, & now I’m diving headfirst into PhD research with two more additions to the crew (and recovering from my fourth C-section!). It makes the journey a little slower, a bit more “windy”, but also more meaningful. It's definitely harder. I'm navigating post C-section healing, PhD deadlines, & client projects, all while ensuring quality time with each child. As a Gemini, I’m always curious, always questioning – is this the best way? Honestly, I wouldn't change this path. For me, it’s about the journey, owning it, even if it’s non-linear. If I don't reach a goal as quickly as someone with fewer responsibilities, that’s on me, not my circumstances. & I’m not giving up. I am still here, still present, still learning, growing, & sharing it all with you. So, how do I navigate this beautiful chaos? Smart systems, AI magic, mindset shifts, & a strong support system (still a work in progress!). Let’s dive in! This one’s especially for you if you’re a Foundation Builder – just starting out, feeling overwhelmed, maybe making less than £1k a month. Sound familiar? Thought so. Taming the Time Beast: Smart Systems & AI to the Rescue One of my biggest takeaways from my MBA (Cranfield, life-changing!) was the power of systems. The course? Intense! A daily mind explosion! When you're juggling everything, working hard isn't enough; you have to work smart . This means constantly questioning, “Is this the best way?” & being open to smarter solutions. Systems, ideally AI-powered, are your lifeline. They’re the difference between treading water & making progress. What’s one system you can implement today? AI scheduling tools are game-changers. Imagine coordinating school runs, activities, client calls, PhD supervision, date nights (crucial!), & vet appointments for two hyperactive dogs without digital help. Impossible! Seriously, the system will help. We need a robust system, a schedule. It’s essential! AI keeps everyone on the same page, reducing mental load. Those automated reminders? Lifesavers. AI isn't just for scheduling. My husband (a fellow PhD student – yes, we're that couple – same classes, heartwarming, should be more normal!) focuses on generative AI & micro-businesses. He's opened my eyes to AI-powered research. Invaluable for my academic work & client projects, helping me synthesize information faster. AI can be a game-changer. It helps build 'Flow' – streamlining processes, automating tasks, & gaining insights. We're talking working smarter , not harder. This speaks to "Fusion" (AI Integration) within our Business Flourish Framework at Femmeprenista. AI enhances Flow by automating tasks like email marketing, social media scheduling, and even client onboarding, freeing up your time for high-impact activities. This is all part of working smarter . Find out more about how the Business Flourish Framework helps you streamline your business Business Flourish Framework Mindset Magic: Embracing Imperfection & Releasing the Pressure Mindset is huge. Perfectionism? The enemy of progress. As mums, we’re conditioned to strive for perfection—career, motherhood, relationships, even Instagram-worthy homes (who has time?!). The pressure is real. It’s a “By Me” (Hustle/Force) trap in Adrienne Weimer’s Four Levels of Consciousness, where we think success comes solely from our own intense efforts, neglecting Flow & Trust. Exhausting & unrealistic! My journey, especially with four kids & a PhD, has taught me progress over perfection. Some days, I'm Superwoman. Other days, I’m surviving the morning routine meltdown-free (barely!). It's okay. You don’t give up. Imperfection? A superpower. It allows for progress, small wins, & releasing pressure. Jim Rohn nailed it: “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every day.” I used to stress over incomplete to-do lists. Now? I celebrate small wins & focus on consistent effort. I’ve also learned to ask for help (tough after my C-section when my "super mum" vision crashed into reality. Humbling, but it led to better support systems.). There was this one time, I was so overwhelmed trying to finalize a client presentation, manage the kids' school projects (glitter EVERYWHERE!), and meet a PhD research deadline that I completely missed a crucial meeting with my business partner. It was awful, I felt terrible, and it made me realize just how unsustainable my approach was. It was a wake-up call to prioritize better, get more organized, and implement those systems I preach about. It was a painful but necessary lesson. It’s all about “Focus” in our Business Flourish Framework – mindset, resilience, confidence. Lead yourself first. Discover how we can help you sharpen your mindset Business Flourish Framework The Power of Support: You Don't Have to Do It Alone This is ongoing for me. I’m lucky to have my amazing partner, a true rock. But local family support? Limited, like many millennial mums. This resonates in my PhD research (78% of early-stage entrepreneurs I interviewed cite isolation as a major challenge). It’s the “Little Red Hen” fable – you’re doing all the work. The struggle is real. Support is vital, personally & professionally. Find a babysitter, connect with entrepreneurial mums (solidarity!), invest in coaching. I remember telling my mum, “Mom, I need help now —not later!” Different support for different times. It’s like planting a garden but forgetting to water it – ongoing nurturing is key. Articulate your needs clearly, even when uncomfortable. Join Femme:Connect Today Your Smallest Viable Step: A 3-Step Checklist Where to begin? - Authentic Leadership Femmeprenista: Find Your Power & Thrive
Beyond the CEO Title: Cultivating Authentic Leadership as a Modern Femmeprenista – A Journey of Personal Responsibility, Holistic Growth, & Real Impact Let’s be honest, shall we? The word "leadership" can feel… well, a bit loaded. For many of us ambitious female entrepreneurs, especially when we’re also juggling school runs, teething toddlers, or the delightful chaos of our teenage daughter’s latest world-ending drama, "leadership" might conjure up images of sharp suits, impersonal boardrooms, & a kind of rigid, corporate persona that feels worlds away from our daily reality. If you're anything like me, you might have even wondered if it’s something reserved for the ‘big players’ or those who’ve already ‘made it’. But what if I told you that true, effective leadership isn’t about a title on a business card or adopting some pre-defined, often masculine, mould? What if it’s actually an incredibly personal, evolving practice that starts from within, deeply rooted in self-awareness, unwavering personal responsibility, & the courage to align your business with your core values & the beautiful, messy truth of your life? That, my lovely, is the kind of leadership we champion here at Femmeprenista. It’s not about suddenly becoming someone else; it’s about becoming more of who you truly are, & using that authentic power to build not just a successful business, but a genuinely fulfilling life. And the best part? It’s a skill you can start cultivating today, no matter what stage your business is at. Leadership: It Begins With Leading You Before you can lead a team, a movement, or even a single client to a transformation, the leadership journey begins much closer to home: it begins with leading yourself. This is where the real magic happens, & it's something I’ve learned through my own winding path. I remember when I embarked on my MBA at Cranfield. At the time, I was a mum to a little one, feeling the pull of corporate life & wondering if more qualifications would lead to a better, more senior role. The MBA was incredible – mind-expanding & full of amazing people. But juggling those intense study sessions with the demands of motherhood also brought a tough lesson in self-leadership. I recall one particularly brutal week, pulling an all-nighter for an entrepreneurial finance assignment while my toddler was teething. I was beyond exhausted, snapping at my partner, & feeling utterly overwhelmed. It hit me then: climbing any ladder, corporate or otherwise, wouldn't matter if I was running on empty. The biggest revelation wasn’t a new corporate strategy; it was the profound clarity that even climbing higher up someone else’s ladder wouldn’t give me the quality of life, autonomy, or direct impact I craved. It was a stark reminder that true fulfillment for me wasn't just about the figure on a payslip, but about the quality of the life that income supported. That realisation, that deep listening to my own needs & intuition, was an act of self-leadership. It propelled me towards entrepreneurship, towards building something that felt aligned & true, rather than just pursuing what seemed like the ‘sensible’ next step. About Carlene Nisbett / Our Mission This "inside-out" leadership is about: Mastering Your Mindset: This is your command centre. It’s about consciously choosing your thoughts, cultivating resilience in the face of inevitable setbacks (because let’s face it, the entrepreneurial rollercoaster has plenty of those!), & dismantling those pesky limiting beliefs that tell you you’re not good enough, not ready, or not ‘leaderly’ enough. It’s about understanding that your internal dialogue shapes your external reality. Embracing Personal Responsibility: This is a big one for me. It’s about owning your outcomes – the wins, the lessons (because there are no failures, only feedback!), & everything in between. When you take radical responsibility, you reclaim your power. You stop waiting for external validation or blaming circumstances, & you start creating the results you want. This doesn't mean ignoring systemic challenges – believe me, as a Black woman, a mother, & a Millennial who’s seen wages stagnate while the price of a block of cheese skyrockets, I know they’re real. But it means focusing on what you can control, how you can adapt, & how you can work smart to navigate those challenges. But what if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you can navigate it? As a Black female entrepreneur, I know first-hand that I need to create my own current & push forward! Prioritising Your Wellbeing: You cannot pour from an empty cup. As busy entrepreneurs, & often mothers, we are master jugglers. But if your own energy, health, & well-being are constantly at the bottom of the priority list, sustainable leadership (& business) is impossible. True leadership means recognising that nourishing yourself – your mind, body, & spirit – isn't a luxury; it’s a fundamental requirement for showing up fully & effectively. It’s about designing a business that energises you, rather than drains you. Leadership, in this sense, is a daily commitment. It’s in the conscious choices you make, the boundaries you set, the way you speak to yourself, & your unwavering dedication to your own growth. The Femmeprenista Leader: Authentic, Intuitive, & Unapologetically You Now, let’s talk about what this looks like in the real world, especially for us multitasking mothers. Forget the outdated, stiff-upper-lip leadership paradigms. It’s time to define & embrace a leadership style that is utterly authentic to you – as a woman, as a mother, as the unique, brilliant individual you are. Did you know that research by Catalyst found that companies with more women in leadership roles often show greater profitability? Catalyst Research I spent years in corporate environments, & while I learned a tremendous amount, I also experienced firsthand what it feels like to be a "cog in the wheel," to have your contributions go unrecognised, or worse, to be told "you're all replaceable." That kind of culture doesn't foster genuine leadership; it breeds compliance. Authentic leadership, the kind we cultivate as Femmeprenistas, is the antithesis of that. It’s about: Leveraging Your Unique Strengths: As women, & particularly as mothers, we possess an incredible arsenal of inherent leadership qualities. Think about your intuition – that gut feeling that so often guides you correctly. Think about your resilience – the ability to navigate the "beautiful chaos" of family life & business with grace (most of the time!) & bounce back from challenges. Think about your empathy, your ability to connect, your talent for multitasking. These are not "soft skills"; these are leadership superpowers. I often think back to my time at Apple, supporting a struggling international team member. Getting to know them, empathizing with their challenges, and empowering them with autonomy led to a remarkable turnaround. It wasn’t about demanding more; it was about understanding and supporting their individual strengths. Challenging Traditional Norms: Who says a leader has to be a certain way, look a certain way, or communicate in a certain way? Your leadership style should be an extension of your personality, your values, & your lived experiences. If you're warm & nurturing, lead with warmth. If you're direct & analytical, lead with clarity. The power lies in your authenticity, not in conforming to an external ideal. Building Resilient, Value-Aligned Businesses: When you lead from a place of authenticity, you naturally attract people & opportunities that resonate with your core values. You build a business that not only succeeds financially but also feels deeply meaningful & aligned with who you are. This creates incredible resilience because your "why" is strong & your passion is palpable. This authentic approach is about dropping the mask, embracing your imperfections, & leading with your whole heart. It's about building a business that doesn't just look good on the outside but feels good on the inside, for you & for everyone it touches. Your Leadership Evolution: From Foundation to Vision One of the most exciting things about authentic leadership is that it’s not a destination; it’s an ongoing journey of evolution. The way you lead will adapt & grow as you & your business move through different stages. It's a skill that is continuously honed & developed. We often talk about the different stages of the entrepreneurial journey here at Femmeprenista, & each stage calls for a different expression of your leadership: Femmeprenista Female Entrepreneur Support: Find Your Purpose The Foundation Builder (Our Chloe-Type): In the early days, leadership is often about sheer courage & decisiveness. The Foundation Builder, just starting, with an unvalidated idea, is about stepping up, making those crucial first decisions (What’s my niche? Who do I serve? What’s my offer?), & conquering the very real fears that come with putting yourself & your ideas out there. It’s about leading yourself through uncertainty & taking those brave first steps. Remember my early venture, Nisbett and George? We jumped in headfirst, fueled by passion, but we were really leading ourselves through the dark, trusting our gut every step of the way! The Scaling Leader (Our Amy-Type): As your business gains traction & starts to grow, your leadership needs to evolve. This stage is often about learning to delegate effectively (a tough one for many of us!). The Scaling Leader, now at £1k-£10k per month, is about building & inspiring a small team, & implementing smart, strategic systems that allow your business to grow without you being the bottleneck. It’s about learning to multiply your impact through others & creating streamlined processes, perhaps even leveraging smart AI tools to create more space & efficiency. For those navigating this exciting phase, dedicated support like our Momentum Coaching Page can be transformative in developing these scaling leadership skills. Imagine my eldest daughter, now a teenager. She is leading the way in school while juggling many tasks. I have had to learn to delegate to her, so she can continue to be organized. So this way, she knows it is about time management; which is how she leads. Support like our Momentum Coaching Page can be transformative in developing these scaling leadership skills for you, my friend! The Visionary Leader (Our Sofia-Type): Once your business is well-established & thriving, leadership takes on another dimension. The Visionary Leader, thriving at 10k-50k+, is about casting a wider vision, inspiring not just your team but a larger community or even a movement. It’s about strategic foresight, building a lasting legacy, & perhaps exploring advanced strategies for exponential growth. This level of leadership often requires a different kind of strategic partnership, like our Ascend Executive Coaching Page , to help you navigate these expansive horizons. The key takeaway here is that leadership isn't something you either "have" or "don't have." It's a muscle you build through conscious practice, reflection, & a willingness to learn & adapt at every stage of your entrepreneurial adventure. The Real Impact: Leadership for a Business and Life You Adore So, why does all this focus on authentic, evolving leadership matter so much? Because, ultimately, it’s the cornerstone for achieving not just business growth & financial freedom, but also genuine work-life integration & lasting fulfillment. It’s how you build a business that truly serves your life, rather than the other way around. When you lead authentically & take full ownership of your journey, you: Challenge the "Hustle Culture" Narrative: You prove that success doesn’t have to come at the expense of your health, your family, or your sanity. Authentic leaders build sustainably, integrating their well-being & personal priorities into their business model. Make sure I walk my dog today for at least an hour. Take my toddler to soft play, so I can spend time with her. I am to set a boundary and no calls after 6pm, so I can be with my family. Create Deeper Impact: Your unique voice & value-driven approach resonate more powerfully, attracting ideal clients & creating more meaningful transformations. What is one boundary you can set today? Build a Business on Your Terms: You get to define what success looks like for you . This means you can design your business operations, your offers, & your schedule in a way that aligns with your personal needs & aspirations, allowing for that much-needed flexibility & presence, especially as a mother. Think of success as a kaleidoscope, not a ladder. Achieve Holistic Success: This isn't just about the numbers in your bank account. It’s about the joy you feel in your work, the freedom you have in your days, the quality time you spend with your loved ones, & the legacy you're building. As Tony Robbins states, it's about raising your standards for all of these. This holistic approach, integrating mindset, well-being, & strategic action, is at the very heart of how we work at Femmeprenista & is woven into our The Business Flourish Framework . This section serves as our call to action. And remember, as Steve Peters would say, you always have a choice, so choose yourself! If you feel like this is for you, and you need a team to guide, empower, and lead you, to all things success, our Momentum Coaching is a great choice to help start your journey. If you’ve been waiting for permission to call yourself a leader, or for your business to reach a certain milestone before you "feel" like one, I want you to hear this loud & clear: your leadership journey starts now. It starts with the commitment you make to yourself, to your vision, & to the impact you want to create in the world. It’s about leading with integrity, with courage, & with your whole, authentic heart. It’s about embracing the beautiful, messy, exhilarating path of the modern Femmeprenista. You’ve got this. - Multiple Income Streams for Women: Build True Wealth & Freedom
Building True Wealth: More Than Just Money in the Bank (And How to Get It) Hey lovely ladies, Carlene here! Let's talk about something really close to my heart (and bank account, hopefully!): building true wealth. And I don't just mean piles of cash (though that's definitely part of it!). I'm talking about the kind of wealth that gives you freedom, flexibility, and the power to design a life you absolutely love. A life where you're not just surviving, but thriving , both in business and beyond. Because, let's be honest, isn't that what we all really want? The Scaling Leader's Dilemma: Feast or Famine & the Hustle Trap Now, if you're a Scaling Leader, you know this struggle all too well. You've got traction, you're making moves, but the income rollercoaster can be a real killer. One minute you're celebrating a big win, the next you're stressing about where the next client is coming from. It's exhausting, right? And that constant pressure to hustle, to always be on, can lead to serious burnout. I've been there, done that, got the slightly frazzled t-shirt (and probably a few grey hairs to prove it!). I remember when I first started trying to diversify my income streams, I launched a membership program thinking it would be a surefire win. It totally bombed. Talk about a reality check! It taught me a valuable (and slightly painful) lesson about really understanding what my audience wanted and needed before creating an offer. I remember trying to strategize a new premium offer launch while simultaneously mediating a heated debate between my teenage daughter & my six-year-old about glitter glue. Let’s just say, glitter ended up everywhere . That moment highlighted the overwhelming need for not just more income, but a more sustainable way of building it. The Power of Predictable Revenue: Creating Multiple Streams So, how do you ditch the feast-or-famine cycle and build true wealth? My MBA at Cranfield really solidified this for me: the secret lies in creating multiple, consistent revenue streams . It's about working smarter , not harder, and strategically diversifying your income, like a savvy investor. When I first explored this, it felt so overwhelming. Looking back, my biggest mistake was trying to do too much at once. My PhD research into women's entrepreneurship constantly reinforces this: taking small, strategic steps consistently is more effective than sporadic bursts of overwhelm. Practical Strategies for Diversification: Beyond the One-Trick Pony Here are a few ideas to get your cogs turning: • Premium Offers: Package your expertise into high-value programs, coaching packages, or masterminds. This is about creating offers that solve big problems. Think deep transformation. • Recurring Revenue: Explore membership models, subscription boxes, or ongoing support. This creates predictable income. Imagine knowing how much revenue is coming in each month! • Strategic Systems: Streamline your operations with efficient systems. Delegate or ditch what’s not working. You're the CEO, not the chief everything officer! This frees you up for strategic growth. I'm even exploring AI to automate marketing tasks—working smarter, not harder! • Digital Products: Create e-books, online courses, or templates that provide on-demand solutions. This leverages your expertise and reaches a wider audience. • Strategic Partnerships: Collaborate with other businesses. Think joint ventures, affiliate marketing, or bundle deals. It’s like having a business bestie, making the journey more fun! I partnered with a mindset coach to create a workshop on imposter syndrome – a huge success! Handling the Hesitations: "But Carlene, I'm Already So Busy!" I get it. More on your to-do list might make you want to hide. But building multiple revenue streams is about working smarter . It's about creating a business that works for you . Yes, it takes effort, but it’s an investment in future freedom. Think of it this way: if your one trick stops working, you’re stuck. Multiple income streams are like a stable of talented ponies. If one takes a break, you've got others. This builds resilience. As Myron Golden would say, "To become the tree, you have to cease being the seed." Flow: Building Momentum with Smart Systems Building momentum with smart systems is key. Streamlining operations doesn't mean losing your personal touch. It means automating routine tasks so you can focus on what matters. How We Work/Business Flourish Framework Smallest Viable Step: A 3-Step Checklist to Diversify Your Income Okay lovely, let’s get practical. Follow this 3-step checklist this week: Identify Your Zone of Genius: What do people consistently ask for your help with? What are you amazing at? For me, it was helping women systemize their businesses & leverage AI . Brainstorm ONE New Stream: What product or service could you create that uses this skill? Could you create a workshop, a digital product, or a premium coaching package? I started with a simple, free checklist that led to a high-value program. Commit & Celebrate: Schedule a specific time to work on this new stream this week. Even just 30 minutes. Then, celebrate that win – you’re building true wealth! - Femmeprenista female entrepreneur community: Find Your Tribe
More Than Just a Blog: My Story, My 'Why,' & How Femmeprenista Becomes Your Ally Hello lovely! If we haven’t been properly acquainted yet, I’m Carlene Nisbett, the heart & hustle behind Femmeprenista. Pull up a chair, grab a cuppa (or something stronger – no judgement here, & I'm sure it’s wine o’clock somewhere!), because I want to share a little of my story, my real ‘why’ for creating this space, & most importantly, how this blog is designed to be your genuine ally in building a business & a life you truly, madly, deeply love. You see, I believe that as ambitious female entrepreneurs, especially as mothers, we’re often told our journey should look a certain way. We’re handed blueprints that don’t quite fit, advice that feels a bit… off. My mission, through Femmeprenista & specifically through this blog, is to change that narrative. It’s to offer you a space that feels like a warm, empowering chat with a friend who truly gets it – because I’ve lived it, & I’m still living it right alongside you. So, Who Am I Really? The Woman Juggling It All (Just Like You!) If you are a Foundation Builder, just starting out, know that my entrepreneurial spark ignited young – I was that kid selling sweets in the playground, already understanding the thrill of creating something & seeing it valued. But my path wasn't a straight line from playground profits to CEO. Oh no, life had a few detours planned! My own educational journey was a bit of a rollercoaster. I remember vividly the feeling of being in an environment where I just didn’t fit, where my confidence took a nosedive. That pivotal mid-year move to a different school, while challenging, taught me so much about the power of the right environment & the resilience needed to find your footing & your voice. It’s a lesson that stuck, especially when I later found my academic & personal 'tribe' at the University of East London studying Fashion Design with Marketing. That experience, after an initial university course that felt completely wrong for me, really solidified my belief in listening to that inner nudge, that intuition that tells you when something is (or isn’t) your path. Then came over thirteen years in the corporate world, with giants like Apple & Electrolux. & whilst I learned an immense amount, I also learned what I didn’t want. I often felt like a cog in a huge machine, my contributions sometimes lost in the shuffle, & the flexibility I craved, especially as my family grew, just wasn't there. I recall working on incredible projects, pouring my heart & soul into them, only for them to be launched without a whisper of my name – it’s a strange feeling, that lack of direct recognition. It wasn’t for me. & speaking of family, they are my everything. I’m a very busy mum to four incredible children – a vibrant teenage daughter navigating those exciting & sometimes stormy waters, a wonderfully balanced & charming six-year-old, an inquisitive & chatty two-year-old, & our newest little arrival, my baby son. Add to that our two lively Miniature Pinschers, Cappuccino (the chilled mum) & Espresso (the bouncing-off-the-walls daughter), & you can imagine the beautiful, orchestrated chaos that is our home! Just this morning, I was trying to finalise a thought for this very post, & my toddler decided my notebook was the perfect canvas for her abstract crayon art, all while the baby serenaded us with his full lung capacity because breakfast was apparently five minutes late – the smell of the crayons mixed with the faint scent of the blueberry porridge I hadn't cleared away yet. You know those moments, right? When you’re trying to send one coherent email, & suddenly you’re negotiating a hostage situation involving a rogue banana & a six-year-old who’s convinced it’s "too bendy." It’s real, it’s messy, & it’s wonderful. This journey of motherhood has been interwoven with my own pursuit of growth. I completed my undergraduate degree with my eldest as a baby, my MBA from Cranfield University with my second daughter keeping me on my toes, & now I’m navigating my PhD research into Black female entrepreneurship with my two youngest. It’s… a lot! It definitely makes the path feel "slower" sometimes, compared to those without these precious responsibilities. But I wouldn’t change it. It’s taught me resilience, the art of the smart pivot, & an unshakeable belief in taking ownership of my journey, my pace. My "Why": From Feeling Replaceable to Fuelling Your Fire So, what lit the fire under me to create Femmeprenista & dedicate myself to this blog? It boils down to a deep-seated desire for something more – more flexibility, more fulfilment, more autonomy, & the ability to make a direct, tangible impact. The corporate world, for all its lessons, often left me feeling like that 'replaceable cog.' I remember a particular leadership meeting where the message was, quite bluntly, "you're all replaceable." That hit hard. It wasn't about loyalty or valuing the individual; it was about the bottom line. & while I understand business is business, I yearned for a space where contribution was truly seen, where passion was fuelled, not stifled by bureaucracy or internal politics. There were times I felt I was expected to deliver work worthy of a six-figure salary on a fraction of that, & the frustration was immense. My MBA at Cranfield was a huge turning point. Initially, I thought it was my ticket to a more senior corporate role, a way to escape the micromanagement & underpayment. I vividly recall the taster day feeling like a series of mini-explosions in my brain – so much new, exciting information! I will confess though, despite the excitement, I was plagued by a nagging sense of "Who am I to be doing this, surrounded by these brilliant people?" Imposter syndrome definitely tried to crash the party! That's why I now make mindset mastery a core component of my coaching through Femmeprenista, because I know how critical it is to quiet that inner critic. But as I delved deeper into strategic business principles, a different truth emerged. Even climbing higher up that ladder wouldn’t necessarily give me the quality of life or the direct impact I craved. I realised that my true path, the one that had been whispering to me since those playground sweet-selling days, was entrepreneurship. It was about asking, "Isn't life about the quality of it, not just how much you've got in the pocket?" That realisation was the catalyst. I knew I wanted to help other women, particularly mothers, build businesses that genuinely aligned with their lives, their values, & their deepest aspirations. I wanted to create a space where they could find their voice, feel seen & understood, & get the tailored support they needed to thrive – support that I often wished I’d had. The Business Flourish Framework underpins this. I’ve seen this holistic approach transform businesses. Client success stories highlight this. Just last month, I worked with Sarah, who was feeling utterly burnt out, juggling her online shop with three young kids. She was on the verge of giving up. Through implementing the Business Flourish Framework , specifically focusing on the Fuel pillar (prioritising wellbeing), Sarah carved out dedicated self-care time, delegated some tasks to a virtual assistant, & implemented smart AI systems to automate her social media scheduling (Fusion pillar). The result? She regained 15 hours a week, her sales increased by 30%, & she rediscovered her passion for her business. As Sarah told me: ‘I feel like a different person! I’m actually enjoying my business again, & I have time for my family.’ Stories like that are what fuel my fire! Actually, talking about AI, I've been wrestling with getting my head around the best AI tools for content repurposing myself lately! Ironic, isn't it, given I champion AI integration via the Fusion pillar?! I keep getting lost in the shiny object syndrome, jumping from one tool to another without truly mastering any. It's a classic case of "analysis paralysis," & I'm actively trying to implement a system to focus on one tool at a time, master its features, & then decide if it truly fits my needs. It’s all too easy to get distracted! Why This Femmeprenista Blog is Your New Best Friend in Business You might be thinking, "Another business blog? What makes this one different?" & that’s a fair question! This blog isn’t just about spitting out generic advice or rehashing the latest trends. It's a direct line to my heart, my head, & my accumulated experience – the triumphs, the face-palm moments, the evidence-based strategies, & the mindset shifts that have helped me & countless other women navigate this wild ride. Think of it as your regular dose of: Authentic, Relatable Insights: I’m not going to sugar-coat things. Entrepreneurship is tough. Juggling it with motherhood? Even tougher. But it’s also incredibly rewarding. I’ll share the real stories, the practical tips, & the empowering perspectives that come from being in the trenches. Here’s a glimpse of what you can expect to gain: Crystal Clarity & Strategic Direction: We’ll dive into how to truly define your vision, understand your unique strengths, & set clear, achievable goals. It’s about sharpening your mindset & focus so you know exactly where you’re going & why, making those tough decisions with more confidence. For instance, try mapping out your ideal week, blocking out time for key activities, & ruthlessly eliminating anything that doesn’t align with your goals. Actionable Marketing & Systems Savvy: Forget confusing jargon & overly complicated strategies. We’ll explore practical ways to develop an authentic brand (Flair pillar) that magnetically attracts your ideal clients. You’ll find advice on creating streamlined, efficient workflows (Flow pillar), perhaps even leveraging smart AI tools (Fusion pillar) to free up your precious time & energy, so you can work smarter, not just harder. To start, try creating a simple client intake form using Google Forms to automate your onboarding process. A Resilient, Empowered CEO Mindset: This journey demands mental toughness & a belief in your own capabilities. We’ll explore how to cultivate radical personal responsibility (because ultimately, your success is down to you ), overcome those pesky limiting beliefs, & lead your business with unshakeable confidence. A great first step is to identify one limiting belief that’s holding you back & actively challenge it with evidence to the contrary. Holistic Success & Wellbeing Strategies: Burnout is not a badge of honour. We’ll champion ways to integrate your business with your family life sustainably, prioritising your health & energy so you can perform at your best without sacrificing what matters most. This is about fuelling your body & mind for the long haul. To start, try these: block out 30 minutes for exercise or mindful meditation & schedule one "digital detox" evening a week to fully disconnect & recharge. - Motherhood Entrepreneurial Superpower: Thrive in Business & Life
From Chaos to Catalyst: Turning the Motherhood Juggle into Your Business Superpower Let’s have a real chat, just you & me. If you’re a mother running a business, chances are you’ve had those days. You know the ones – you're trying to nail a crucial client call with one eye on the clock for the school run, your toddler daughter has decided your leg is a climbing frame, your teenager needs an urgent answer about something that feels monumentally important to them (& decidedly less so to you in that exact moment!). And somewhere in the background, Espresso, our hyper-energetic Miniature Pinscher puppy, is probably trying to convince her calmer mum, Cappuccino, that the postman is a clear & present danger. Sound familiar? I thought so! For years, the narrative has been that the “juggle” of motherhood is a career handbrake, a mountain of obstacles standing between you & entrepreneurial success. We’re told it’s about sacrifice, about constantly feeling stretched, & about how our family commitments somehow make us less than entrepreneurs who don’t have children. Well, I’m here to tell you, as a CEO & a mum of four – from a sharp-witted teenager navigating her GCSEs down to my precious infant son, with a lively school-aged daughter & an adventurous two-year-old in between – that narrative is, quite frankly, rubbish. It’s time we flipped it on its head. Because what if I told you that the very chaos you navigate daily, the skills you’ve honed in the beautiful, whirlwind reality of motherhood, are not your kryptonite but your entrepreneurial superpower ? Motherhood: Your Unofficial MBA in Entrepreneurship Think about it. Long before you even drafted your first business plan, motherhood was schooling you in high-level executive skills. That relentless drive to get things done efficiently when you have precisely seven minutes before a nappy needs changing or a school gate looms? That’s world-class time management & prioritisation, my friend. & according to a recent study, mothers in business are proven to showcase a higher level of time management & planning due to the intense juggle. I remember when I was knee-deep in my MBA at Cranfield – with my second daughter just a baby. The intensity was immense, but so was the learning curve, not just academically, but in managing life. Then came my PhD, which I’m navigating now with my youngest two, an infant & a toddler. People sometimes ask how I do it. The honest answer? It’s a testament to the skills motherhood gifted me: Advanced Multitasking & Triage: You’re not just juggling tasks; you’re conducting an orchestra of competing priorities. You can spot what’s truly urgent versus what can wait with laser precision – a skill that’s invaluable when managing multiple projects or client demands. Profound Empathy & Intuition: Understanding the unspoken needs of a non-verbal baby or a sensitive child hones your empathy to an incredible degree. This translates directly into understanding your clients’ deepest needs & motivations, often before they articulate them themselves. Resourceful Problem-Solving (aka Crisis Management 101): Lost PE kit minutes before school? Sudden unexplained rash? Sibling squabble reaching DEFCON 5? You’re a master of thinking on your feet & finding solutions with limited resources. Tell me that’s not entrepreneurial gold! I once had to deliver a virtual presentation with my toddler daughter unexpectedly home from nursery, serenading me with her rendition of ‘Baby Shark’ just out of camera shot. I had to adapt, focus, & deliver – a crash course in grace under pressure! Relentless Drive for Efficiency: Every parent knows that time is a precious, finite commodity. We are hardwired to find the quickest, most effective way to do everything because there’s always something else (& someone else!) needing our attention. This efficiency-mindset is pure business brilliance. These aren’t just ‘soft skills’; they are potent, transferable assets that can give you a distinct edge in the competitive world of business. The trick is to stop seeing them as by-products of a demanding home life & start consciously leveraging them within your business. You know, there were definitely moments when I wondered if I was completely deluded trying to do both – be a "good" mom & a "good" entrepreneur. I remember one particularly challenging week, my eldest came home in tears because she was determined to build the Lego Parisian Restaurant, but felt completely overwhelmed by the tiny pieces, & I was launching a new program. I felt completely torn between the needs of my teenage daughter & those of my business & I really doubted if I could succeed in both roles. Stop Fighting, Start Flowing: Designing a Business That Breathes With Your Family So many of us try to shoehorn our businesses into pre-defined, rigid structures that simply don’t work with the beautiful, unpredictable rhythm of family life. We try to fight against the tide, & that, my lovely, is exhausting. Instead, what if we designed our businesses to flow with our families? What if we created operational systems that honour our commitments as mothers, rather than making us feel constantly torn? This isn't about working less; it’s about working smarter, with intention & in alignment. It’s about creating a business that feels less like a battle & more like a dance. At Femmeprenista, we talk a lot about creating systems that support sustainable success & well-being – this is a core part of our Business Flourish Framework . This isn't about lowering your ambitions; it's about elevating your strategies so your business energises you & integrates with your life, rather than draining you. Smart Systems for Sanity & Scale: Your Practical Toolkit Okay, so how do we actually do this? It’s about being intentional & strategic. Here are a few practical ways to build business systems that embrace your family life, helping you reclaim time, reduce overwhelm, & boost your productivity: Intelligent Time-Blocking (The Mum Edition): Forget rigid, unrealistic schedules. Your time-blocking needs to be flexible & acknowledge reality. This means blocking in school runs, toddler nap times (however unpredictable!), homework help, & even those spontaneous moments your school-aged daughter needs to tell you about the epic Lego creation they just built. Flow-Boost: Building in this flexibility acknowledges the natural ebb & flow of family life, allowing you to feel less stressed & more in control. Action Tip: Use a digital calendar with different colours for work tasks, family commitments, & personal time. Build in buffer zones. If your toddler daughter’s nap is usually two hours, block 90 minutes of focused work & allow the rest for transition. Be realistic about what you can achieve in focused bursts. Honestly, those quiet early mornings, before the household truly wakes, are my golden hours for deep strategic work, fuelled by a strong coffee (or two!). Master Batch-Working: Constantly switching between different types of tasks is a massive energy drain. Batch-working – grouping similar tasks together – is a game-changer for busy mothers. Flow-Boost: By minimizing context-switching, you protect your mental energy, allowing you to stay more focused & present with your family when you're not working. Action Tip: Dedicate specific blocks of time to similar activities. For example, Monday morning for content creation, Tuesday afternoon for client calls, Wednesday for admin & finances. This minimises context-switching & maximises focus, even if those blocks are shorter than you’d ideally like. Implementation Checklist: Identify 3-5 core task categories in your business. Block out dedicated time slots for each in your calendar. Turn off notifications during these blocks to minimise distractions. Embrace Simple AI-Powered Automation: Here’s where we can get really clever. There are so many simple, accessible AI tools that can act like an extra pair of hands, automating routine tasks that eat into your precious time. Think about streamlining your processes & leveraging smart technology . Flow-Boost: Freeing up your time in this way is an act of self-care, giving you space to recharge your batteries & be more present with your loved ones. Action Tip: Explore tools like Buffer or Hootsuite for scheduling social media posts, Zapier for automating email responses or sequences, Otter.ai for transcribing meeting notes, or even Jasper.ai for drafting initial outlines for content. You don’t need to be a tech wizard; many platforms are incredibly user-friendly. Imagine getting an hour back each day simply by automating tasks you used to do manually – what could you do with that extra time? Implementation Checklist: Identify 2-3 time-consuming, repetitive tasks. Research AI tools that can automate these tasks. Set aside 30 minutes to learn the basics of one tool & implement it. Establish Crystal-Clear Communication Boundaries: It’s crucial to communicate your availability clearly to clients & your family. This isn’t about being unavailable; it’s about managing expectations & protecting your focus. Flow-Boost: Clear boundaries help everyone in your life respect your time & energy, leading to fewer interruptions & a greater sense of calm. Action Tip: Clearly state your working hours & response times in your email signature & client agreements. Use an autoresponder for out-of-hours emails. For family, try visual cues – a closed door meaning “Mummy’s in deep work mode unless it’s an emergency,” or a specific sign. It takes practice, but it’s vital for creating those pockets of uninterrupted work. I’ve found Trello invaluable for visual cues. These are just starting points. The beauty is, you get to design what works for you . You know, there was definitely a period where my boundaries were non-existent. I remember trying to implement batch-working for content creation and completely failing – I'd block out three hours, then get distracted by a screaming toddler, a phone call, or the dogs needing to go out. My perfectly planned schedule was in tatters, and I ended up feeling more stressed than ever. But, it made me realise that batch-working can work - but only with realistic timeframes and with crystal-clear communication boundaries in place. It led me to make implementing the "closed door rule" a family priority. The Power of Ownership: You Are the Architect of Your Integrated Life I’m a huge believer in personal responsibility. Yes, motherhood presents unique challenges. Yes, sometimes the system doesn’t feel set up for us. But complaining about it doesn’t change a thing. What does change things is taking ownership of what we can control. You have the agency, the power, & the inherent capability to design & implement systems that work for your specific family & business context. My own journey with four children, juggling a PhD, & running a business, has been, shall we say, eventful . It’s definitely not always been the fastest path, & there have been countless moments of chaos (hello, castor oil on the carpet incident before an important meeting!). But by consciously designing my business around my life, by taking responsibility for creating systems that support me, I’m still here, still growing, & still (mostly!) sane. This is about looking at your unique life & asking: "How can I make my business serve this life, rather than the other way around?" It's about understanding that your path might look different to someone else's, & that's perfectly okay. As I often say, even if my path is slower because of my commitments, if I don't get where I want to go, that's ultimately on me . It’s about finding your way, with courage & creativity. From Surviving to Thriving: Capitalise on Your Maternal Superpowers So, let’s shift our perspective. Let’s move beyond merely coping with the demands of motherhood & entrepreneurship & start actively capitalising on the incredible skills, insights, & resilience that motherhood has instilled in us. Your empathy makes you a better marketer & salesperson. Your efficiency focus makes you a leaner, more agile operator. Your crisis management skills make you unflappable in the face of business challenges. Your ability to nurture & grow tiny humans gives you a unique perspective on nurturing & growing a business & a team. These aren't things to hide or downplay. They are your secret weapons. By consciously acknowledging these strengths & strategically designing your business operations to leverage them – & to honour your family life – you’re not just building a business that can survive; you’re building one that can truly thrive, authentically & sustainably. You’re not just a mother and an entrepreneur. You’re a powerful entrepreneur because you’re a mother. Embrace it. Own it. & watch your business flourish. The truth is, managing the beautiful chaos of family life whilst building a dream isn't a walk in the park. There will be days when it feels overwhelming. But by reframing your perspective & getting smart with your systems, you can transform that juggle into a distinct advantage.
