Paws for Thought: How to Conquer the Canine Chaos of Working From Home

Let's be honest, working from home sounds idyllic, doesn't it? Sipping your coffee in your PJs, ticking off tasks at your own pace, no commute… bliss! But then, throw in a furry "office assistant" who thinks your keyboard is a chew toy & your client calls are the perfect background music for a howl-along, and suddenly, that tranquil workspace looks a bit more like a scene from a particularly chaotic episode of Paw Patrol.
Now, I adore my two Miniature Pinschers, Cappuccino & Espresso. They’re part of the family & bring endless joy. But they also add a unique layer of challenge to the work-from-home juggle. Like that time Espresso decided to showcase her ankle-attacking ninja skills during a Google Meet presentation. My client definitely got a more interactive experience than they bargained for!
This "beautiful chaos" is something many of us experience, especially as female entrepreneurs running businesses from home. We're building empires while navigating toddler-speak & preventing furry friends from redecorating with shredded documents. It’s the ultimate juggle. And for those Foundation Builders navigating those first few clients, it can feel especially overwhelming. So, how do we conquer this canine chaos & maintain productivity? Fear not, fellow Femmeprenistas, I've learned a few tricks. These tips are about creating “Flow,” building smart systems that free up time & energy so you can focus on growing your business & being present for your family.
Setting Boundaries: Because Your Laptop Isn't a Chew Toy
It all starts with boundaries. Even the cutest "co-worker" needs to understand focus time. This can be tricky, especially with a puppy who thinks your every move is playtime. Consistency is key. I thought I could work anywhere with Espresso, but quickly realized my laptop was covered in drool & my productivity was zero. That’s when I knew I needed firm boundaries. This also reinforces taking responsibility for your environment. What works for one won’t work for all. It’s about finding what creates “Flow” for you.
Dedicated Workspace: Create a designated work zone that is pet-free during work hours. A separate office isn’t always feasible, but even a corner of a room can help.
Scheduled Play & Breaks: Incorporate regular playtimes & walks. This helps you stay present with your pets & gives you a screen break. Think of it as scheduled “Fuel.”
Training & Rewards: If your dog is persistent, consider basic training. Reward good behaviour with treats or praise.
Routines & Structure: Your Furry Friend Will Thank You (Eventually)
Just as toddlers thrive on routine, so do pets. Creating structure helps minimize disruptions.
Consistent Walk Times: Set regular times for walks. This helps regulate their energy & reduces demands for attention during work calls.
Feeding Schedule: Stick to set meal times. This reduces "hunger strike" interruptions.
Designated Play Area: Have a specific area for toys & beds. This helps contain the chaos.
Embracing the Funny: Because Laughter is the Best Medicine
Sometimes, your furry "office assistant" will still disrupt your workflow. Remember my "Alana learning to ride a bike" analogy? Sometimes breakthroughs come more easily when we introduce an element of fun, don't take ourselves too seriously, but remember persistence is always key! Like that time Espresso decided my important notes needed to be confetti. At moments like these, take a deep breath, embrace the absurdity, & remember laughter is the best medicine. "I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship." - Louisa May Alcott. Create a “puppy break” photo album. Those furry faces can be an instant mood booster. It's like visual "Fuel."
Building a business, especially as a female entrepreneur, is a rollercoaster. There will be joyful moments & moments where you feel like you're juggling chainsaws while riding a unicycle. It’s all part of the journey. What’s your funniest pet story? Share it below!
