Beyond "Articulate": How to Be Seen as a Visionary Leader, Not Just a Polished Speaker

"You're so articulate!" Ever had that backhanded compliment land with a thud? Like, seriously, is it a compliment or a low-key dig? I know I have. In fact, for years, especially during my early corporate climb, I felt like "articulate" was the only thing people saw, not the ideas and strategic thinking I was bringing to the table. It's often coated in a sugary sweetness, but honestly, it’s giving "pleasant surprise" more than "well-deserved recognition," right? You know that feeling?
It's a phrase that often gets lobbed at women, especially women of colour, & it's rooted in a subtle but pervasive underestimation of our potential. It’s code for, “Wow, you're actually intelligent & capable. Who knew?” It acknowledges polish, but not substance. Eloquence, but not vision.
& let's be real, we Femmeprenistas are here for more than just being articulate. We are visionaries, innovators, & change-makers. We’re building legacies, not just reciting scripts. So, how do we move beyond simply being “well-spoken” & step into our rightful place as recognized leaders?
From Articulate to Visionary: Reframing the Narrative
The problem isn't with being articulate – clear communication is a superpower! The issue lies in the implication that being articulate is somehow unexpected or exceptional for a woman in business. It’s a subtle reinforcement of the very biases we’re actively dismantling.
Remember that time my toddler daughter decided to use my freshly printed seed funding proposal as a colouring book? Yep, purple crayon all over my meticulously crafted projections. The client actually chuckled when I briefly mentioned the "toddler incident" during our call – it turned out he had a similar story involving peanut butter and a quarterly report! While I was frantically trying to salvage the document (and hide the evidence before a client call), it struck me: sometimes, the 'beautiful chaos' of motherhood is the perfect training ground for leadership. You learn to adapt, improvise, & prioritize on the fly. You learn that sometimes, the most articulate response is a deep breath & a quick trip to the printer. Or a strategically placed sticker to cover the purple explosion!
But more importantly, you learn that true leadership isn't about flawless presentations; it's about navigating the unexpected with grace & resilience. It's about having a vision so compelling, so clear, that even a toddler with a purple crayon can’t derail it. It's about cultivating a resilient mindset & sharp focus.
Owning Your Voice: The Power of Mindset
One of the cornerstones of the Business Flourish Framework (Focus) is building a strong mindset – & it's not just about having laser-sharp goals. It's about cultivating an unwavering belief in yourself & your vision. It's about owning your voice, even (and especially) when it shakes a little.
I remember during my time at Apple, a senior executive questioned my ability to manage a specific project. My initial reaction? Panic. Self-doubt whispered, “Maybe they're right. Maybe I’m not ready.” But then, something shifted. I thought back to my dad, the man who literally climbed on tables to challenge teachers who tried to silence me. His unwavering belief in me, even when my own wavered, fueled my fire. I took a deep breath & said, “I understand your concern. I’ve already implemented X, Y, & Z to mitigate the risks you’ve outlined. I’m confident in my team & our ability to deliver.”
The project was a huge success. The lesson? Owning your voice, backing yourself, is half the battle. Sometimes, remembering who you are is enough to silence those whispers. This is especially true for us Scaling Leaders navigating the messy middle of business growth, isn't it? Finding that inner strength, even when doubts creep in, is key. We might be juggling client demands, team management, and, let's be honest, the ever-present demands of family life – but our vision, our "why", is what keeps us going.
Showcasing Expertise: Beyond Words to Impactful Communication
Articulation is just the starting point. To be seen as a visionary leader, you must showcase your expertise in a way that is compelling, memorable, & inspires action.
Tell Stories That Resonate
Data & logic are important, but stories are what truly connect with people. Share your own journey, your client’s transformations, the “why” behind your work. Remember, as Rory Sutherland so brilliantly puts it, stories are the PDF files of human information. They're how we process, understand, & remember. It's also about knowing when you need to be telling those stories – when should you switch from the logical left brain to the emotional right brain? Think about how you connect with your friends – it’s through shared stories, right? Bring that same human element to your business communication.
Surprise Your Audience
Don't just meet expectations; exceed them. Offer insights that are fresh, unexpected, & challenge conventional wisdom. Think about the “Uber map” analogy. It wasn't about making taxis faster; it was about making the wait less anxiety-inducing by giving people information & a sense of control. How can you apply that same principle to your business, to your communication? What's your "Uber map" moment?
Embrace the Unexpected
The entrepreneurial journey is rarely a straight line. There will be moments where everything seems to go sideways. Embrace the beautiful chaos. Your ability to navigate the unexpected with grace & humour is a testament to your leadership. Think about it – my own journey, from selling sweets in the playground to navigating the corporate world and now building Femmeprenista, while raising four kids & pursuing my PhD, has been anything but linear! It's been a rollercoaster, for sure, but it's those unexpected twists and turns that have shaped me, taught me resilience, and given me the stories I now share with you.
Develop Executive Presence
This isn't about power suits & stilettos (unless that's your vibe!). It's about owning your space, commanding attention, & communicating with clarity, confidence, & conviction. It's about believing in your message, your value, and your ability to make a difference.
Juggler's Tip: Record yourself giving a presentation or speaking at a meeting. How's your eye contact? Are you confident in your messaging? Where could you improve?
Stepping Into Visionary Leadership: Flair, Flow, & Fusion
As you progress on your Femmeprenista journey, Flair, Flow, & Fusion become critical for amplifying your impact & solidifying your vision. As my ongoing PhD research highlights, this integrated approach, rooted in strong mindset and smart systems, is often what separates those who simply "survive" in business from those who truly thrive.
3 Steps to Integrate Flair, Flow, & Fusion:
Define your Brand Story (Flair): What makes you unique? What are your core values? Craft a narrative that resonates with your ideal client. For example, my brand story is deeply rooted in my journey as a mother, a woman of colour navigating the corporate world, & my unwavering belief in the power of personal responsibility and smart action.
Identify Bottlenecks (Flow): Where are you spending too much time on manual tasks? Which processes could be automated or streamlined? For instance, are you still manually sending invoices or scheduling social media posts? Automating these tasks can free up hours each week.
Explore AI Tools (Fusion): Research & experiment with AI tools that can help you automate, analyze, & amplify your efforts. Perhaps start with a simple AI scheduling tool for social media, or explore AI-powered email marketing platforms that personalize your outreach.
Your Smallest Viable Step: Own Your Narrative
