28 Steps to Unshakeable Self-Confidence for Ambitious Women

Confidence stuck? 28 steps for ambitious women to build unshakeable self-belief & biz success. Own your power! Read now! #femmeprenista

Hello lovely people, Carlene here!

Let’s be totally honest for a moment, shall we? Juggling a business (or the dream of one!), a family – & in my case, that’s four wonderful, energetic little humans & two equally spirited Miniature Pinschers – & trying to keep your sanity, well, it’s an extreme sport. Some days it feels like I’m trying to get everything done with one eyeliner on because I was too busy cleaning castor oil off the carpet, & I know many of you feel exactly the same. Amidst this beautiful chaos, if there’s one superpower we, as ambitious women & mothers, absolutely need in our arsenal, it's unshakeable self-confidence.

Now, I’m not talking about that loud, brash arrogance you sometimes see. I mean that deep, quiet, unshakeable belief in yourself, your abilities, & your vision. It’s the bedrock that allows you to navigate the inevitable ups & downs of entrepreneurship, to pick yourself up after a setback (because let’s face it, they happen to us all!), & to keep moving forward, even when the path ahead looks a bit foggy.

As a CEO, a mum of four, & someone who’s been on this entrepreneurial rollercoaster for a good while, I can tell you that this kind of confidence isn't something you're magically gifted at birth. Oh no. It’s not a passive trait some people have & others don’t. It’s an actively cultivated skill, a muscle you build through conscious effort, consistent smart action, & a commitment to your own growth. It’s about taking Personal Responsibility & Ownership for your journey. This very idea – that you can shape your mindset & by extension, your reality – is a cornerstone of the 'Focus' pillar within our Business Flourish Framework, our holistic blueprint for building not just a thriving business, but a truly fulfilling life.

This post is my deeply practical & empowering guide to help you build that unshakeable self-confidence. It’s about owning your power, reframing self-doubt as a signal for growth, & understanding that your resilient mindset is the engine for building your dreams. So, grab a cuppa (or something stronger if it’s that time – no judgement here!), & let’s dive into 28 actionable steps to help you find your voice, stand tall, & build that business you dream of, even when systemic challenges or past setbacks try to whisper otherwise.

Why Unshakeable Confidence is Your Secret Weapon

Before we get to the "how," let's touch on the "why." Why is this inner fortitude so crucial? Studies show that entrepreneurs with high self-confidence are more likely to take calculated risks, pursue innovative ideas, and persevere through challenges.

  • It Fuels Resilience: Entrepreneurship is not a linear path; it’s more like a dance – two steps forward, one step back, & sometimes a dramatic twirl you didn’t see coming! Confidence helps you bounce back from disappointments & keep going.

  • It Unlocks Decisiveness: Second-guessing every decision is exhausting & stalls progress. Confidence allows you to trust your judgment & make choices with greater clarity.

  • It Magnetises Opportunities: When you exude self-belief, people (clients, collaborators, investors) are naturally drawn to you & your vision.

  • It Empowers You to Charge Your Worth: Confidence in your value is directly linked to your ability to price your offerings appropriately & stand by those prices.

  • It Helps You Navigate the Juggle: As mothers, we’re constantly balancing. Confidence in our ability to manage it all (even when it feels like we’re dropping a ball or two) is vital for our well-being.

Trust me, my own path from playground sweet-seller to where I am today, navigating corporate mazes, entrepreneurial leaps, an MBA, & now a PhD with four little ones in tow, hasn't always been a straight line of soaring self-belief. There were moments of intense self-doubt, times I questioned if I was truly cut out for it, especially when comparing my "slower" path to others who didn't have the same family commitments. Even now, as I research Black female entrepreneurship for my PhD, I see firsthand how systemic barriers can chip away at confidence, making it even more vital to cultivate a strong inner core. Just last week, as I was preparing for a PhD presentation, I found myself spiraling, questioning whether I was truly qualified amidst a room full of academics. What pulled me back was reminding myself of all the women I’m doing this for, all the entrepreneurs I want to empower. That clarity of purpose was the rocket fuel I needed to step into my power. As a Gemini & Wood Tiger, I'm constantly questioning, learning, & adapting - a trait that’s driven my entrepreneurial journey from day one! You can read a bit more about the 'why' behind Femmeprenista & my journey over on our About Femmeprenista (Carlene Nisbett's Story) page. What I learned, & what I want to share with you, is that confidence is built, brick by practical brick.

And honestly? There are still days when that inner critic gets a little too loud, when the juggle feels overwhelming, & that self-doubt creeps back in. I remember one particular launch where I was so nervous about visibility (and the tech gremlins that always seem to appear!) that I almost talked myself out of going live on social media. What pulled me back was remembering why I was doing it – the women I wanted to serve, the impact I wanted to make. Sometimes, that's all it takes. So, are you ready to start building?

28 Steps to Cultivating Unshakeable Self-Confidence

I’ve broken these down into four key areas to make them a bit more digestible. Remember, it’s not about doing all of these perfectly from day one. It's about progress, not perfection.

Part 1: Rewire Your Mindset – The Foundation of Belief

Your mind is where it all begins. These steps are about shifting your internal landscape.

  1. Challenge Your Inner Critic (And Give it a Silly Name!): We all have that nagging voice. Mine used to sound remarkably like a very strict schoolteacher I once had. Recognise it, thank it for its (misguided) attempt to protect you, & then tell it to take a hike. Giving it a funny name can diffuse its power. For instance, call yours "Doubt Didi" or "Fearful Fiona."

Try This: When Doubt Didi starts whispering, imagine her with curlers in her hair, sipping tea & gossiping – suddenly, she's a lot less intimidating!

  1. Practice Affirmations That Actually Resonate: Forget generic fluff. Craft affirmations that truly speak to you & your specific goals. Say them with conviction. "I am capable of building the business of my dreams while being a present mother." "I attract ideal clients who value my expertise." Instead of "I am successful," try "I am building a thriving business that lights me up."

Try This: Write your affirmations on sticky notes & put them where you'll see them every day – your laptop, your mirror, even the fridge!

  1. Celebrate Every Single Win (No Matter How Small): Did you finally tackle that scary email? Send out an invoice? Post on social media when you felt nervous? Celebrate it! Acknowledge your progress. This builds positive momentum. My eldest, my teenage daughter, recently learned to ride her bike; it wasn't the big pushes but the little moments of balance she celebrated that got her there. Treat yourself to a fancy coffee, a walk in nature, or 15 minutes of guilt-free reading.

Try This: Keep a "wins" jar & add a note for every accomplishment, no matter how small. Read them on days when you need a boost.

  1. Reframe "Failure" as Fabulous Feedback: This is a big one from the world of NLP, & it’s so true. There is no failure, only feedback. Every "mistake" is a lesson. What did you learn? How can you adapt? This mindset shift is liberating. Instead of dwelling on a failed launch, ask: "What did my audience tell me they *really* wanted?"

Try This: After a setback, write down three things you learned & three ways you can use that knowledge to improve.

  1. Visualise Your Success Vividly: Spend a few minutes each day picturing yourself achieving your goals, feeling the emotions of that success. Your mind doesn’t always know the difference between vivid imagination & reality. Use this to your advantage. See yourself confidently delivering a presentation, closing a deal, or launching a successful product.

Try This: Create a "vision board" with images that represent your goals & look at it daily, imagining yourself already living that reality.

  1. Embrace Imperfection (The "Good Enough" Revolution): Perfectionism is a confidence killer & a procrastination enabler. Aim for "good enough" & get it out there. You can always iterate & improve later. Done is better than perfect. Launch that website even if it's not 100% perfect; record that podcast even if you stumble over a few words.

Try This: Set a timer for 30 minutes & work on a task without allowing yourself to edit or overthink. Just get it done!

  1. Cultivate a Growth Mindset: Believe that your abilities & intelligence can be developed through dedication & hard work. This means seeing challenges as opportunities to grow, not as signs you’re not capable. My own journey, pursuing degrees while raising babies, has certainly taught me the power of this. My path is slower, sure, but I'm always learning, always growing. Instead of thinking "I'm not good at marketing," tell yourself "I can learn effective marketing strategies."

Try This: Read a biography of someone you admire who overcame challenges to achieve success. Notice how they embraced a growth mindset.

Part 2: Take Confident Action – Building Belief Through Doing

Confidence isn't just about thinking; it's about doing. Action dispels fear.

  1. Take Consistent, Small, Smart Actions: Overwhelm is the enemy of confidence. Break down big goals into tiny, manageable steps & take action on them consistently. Small wins accumulate into big confidence. Instead of planning a whole website overhaul, commit to updating one page per week.

Try This: Use the "two-minute rule" – if a task takes less than two minutes, do it immediately.

  1. Step Outside Your Comfort Zone (Just a Little Bit Each Day): The magic happens outside your comfort zone. Make it a habit to do one small thing each day that scares you a little. That could be making a sales call, going live on Instagram, or networking. Send one cold email, record a short video, or attend a virtual networking event.

Try This: Pick one small "scary" task & commit to doing it before lunch. The feeling of accomplishment will energize you for the rest of the day.

  1. Learn a New Skill Relevant to Your Goals: Mastering something new is a massive confidence booster. Whether it's a new marketing technique, a piece of software, or improving your public speaking, the act of learning & applying is empowering. Take a course on AI-driven content creation, learn to use Canva for your social media, or practice your pitch in front of a mirror.

Try This: Dedicate 30 minutes each day to learning a new skill. Use online courses, books, or even YouTube tutorials.

  1. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare: Feeling unprepared is a major confidence drainer. If you have an important presentation, sales call, or launch, do your homework. The more prepared you are, the more confident you'll feel. Research your audience, rehearse your talking points, & anticipate potential questions.

Try This: Create a checklist for each type of event & ensure you've covered all the bases before it arrives.

  1. Track Your Progress & Achievements: Keep a "brag file" or a journal of your accomplishments, positive feedback, & milestones. When doubt creeps in, review it. It’s tangible proof of how far you’ve come. Include client testimonials, revenue milestones, completed projects, & skills you've mastered.

Try This: At the end of each week, write down three things you're proud of achieving.

  1. Ask for Help (It's a Sign of Strength, Not Weakness!): Seriously, nobody builds a successful business or navigates motherhood entirely alone. Reaching out for support, mentorship, or just a listening ear is a power move. If those early whispers of 'Am I good enough?' or 'What if I fail?' are currently shouting louder than your brilliant idea, please know you're not alone. Many Foundation Builders feel this way. In fact, if fear & self-doubt are holding you back from validating your brilliant business idea or taking those first crucial steps, our Launch Program Page is designed to help you gain clarity, confidence, & an actionable plan.

Try This: Identify one area where you're struggling & reach out to a mentor, coach, or friend for support.

  1. Focus on Contribution, Not Perfection: Shift your focus from how you are performing to how you can serve your clients or audience. When your intention is to help, self-consciousness often fades. Instead of obsessing over your website design, focus on providing valuable content that solves your audience's problems.

Try This: Before creating any content or offering, ask yourself: "How will this genuinely help my audience?"

Part 3: Nourish Your Well-being – Fuelling Your Inner Strength

You can't pour from an empty cup. Your well-being is non-negotiable for sustained confidence.

  1. Prioritise Self-Care (The Real Kind): This isn't just bubble baths (though they're nice!). It’s about truly nurturing your mind, body, & soul. What recharges you? Make time for it. This is a core tenet of ensuring your business energises rather than drains you. Schedule regular massages, meditate, spend time in nature, or pursue a hobby you love.

Try This: Schedule one self-care activity into your calendar each week & treat it as a non-negotiable appointment.

  1. Set & Enforce Healthy Boundaries: Protect your time, energy, & mental space. Learning to say "no" to things that don't align with your priorities or drain you is a powerful act of self-respect, & it boosts confidence. Decline invitations that don't serve you, set clear work hours, & create tech-free zones in your home.

Try This: Practice saying "no" to one request this week, without offering an explanation or apology.

  1. Curate Your Circle – Surround Yourself with Supporters: Spend time with people who lift you up, believe in you, & champion your ambitions. Limit exposure to negativity & those who drain your energy. Your environment matters hugely. Join a supportive mastermind, connect with like-minded entrepreneurs online, or spend time with friends who make you feel good.

Try This: Identify one relationship that drains your energy & consciously limit your interactions with that person this week.

  1. Move Your Body Regularly: Exercise is a fantastic mood booster & stress reliever. It doesn’t have to be a gruelling gym session; a brisk walk, a dance in your kitchen (my kids love those!), or some gentle yoga can make a world of difference. Try a quick morning stretch, a lunchtime walk, or a fun dance workout video.

Try This: Schedule 15-30 minutes of physical activity into your day, even if it's just a quick walk or some stretching.

  1. Get Enough Quality Sleep: Seriously, everything feels harder when you're sleep-deprived. Prioritising rest is crucial for mental clarity, emotional regulation, & overall confidence. I know this is a tough one for us mums, but even small improvements help. Create a relaxing bedtime routine, optimize your sleep environment, & aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night.

Try This: Create a relaxing bedtime routine by switching off electronics, reading a book, or taking a warm bath before bed.

  1. Dress for Confidence: Wear clothes that make you feel good, powerful, & authentic to who you are. It’s not about labels; it’s about how your attire makes you feel. That "I'm a big deal" energy, as my brilliant colleague Adrienne Weimer would say. Wear an outfit that makes you feel powerful, put on your favorite jewelry, or simply wear something comfortable and stylish.

Try This: Take a few minutes each morning to choose an outfit that makes you feel confident & ready to take on the day.

  1. Practice Mindful Disconnection: Step away from the noise. Take breaks from social media, news, & the constant digital chatter. Allow yourself moments of quiet to reconnect with yourself. Schedule regular "digital detox" periods, meditate, or spend time in nature without your phone.

Try This: Schedule regular "digital detox" periods, meditate, or spend time in nature without your phone.

Part 4: Own Your Journey – Embracing Your Unique Path

Your story, your values, your pace – these are all part of your unique strength.

  1. Identify Your Core Values & Live by Them: When your actions align with your deepest values, you feel more authentic & confident. What truly matters to you? Let that guide your decisions. If authenticity is a core value, ensure your marketing is genuine & transparent. If family is a priority, structure your business to support quality time with loved ones.

Try This: Write down your top three core values & assess how well your current actions align with them. Make adjustments where needed.

  1. Practice Radical Self-Compassion: Talk to yourself like you would a dear friend who is struggling. Be kind, understanding, & patient with yourself. We are all works in progress. Instead of berating yourself for a mistake, offer yourself words of encouragement & understanding.

Try This: The next time you make a mistake, pause & ask yourself, "What would I say to a friend in this situation?" Then, say those words to yourself.

  1. Take Full Ownership (The Buck Stops With You): This is a big one for me. While we acknowledge external challenges, ultimately, your success & your confidence are your responsibility. Own your choices, your actions, & your reactions. If things don’t go to plan, ask "What can I do differently?" not "Whose fault is this?" Instead of blaming the algorithm for low engagement, analyze your content & adapt your strategy.

Try This: Identify one area where you're feeling stuck & take one concrete step to take ownership of the situation.

  1. Reflect on Past Successes & How You Achieved Them: Don't just focus on what's next. Take time to look back at challenges you've overcome & goals you've met. Remind yourself of your capabilities. Review your past achievements & identify the skills, strategies, & mindset that contributed to those successes.

Try This: Create a timeline of your major accomplishments & reflect on the challenges you overcame to achieve them.

  1. Understand Your Confidence Triggers (Positive & Negative): What situations or people make you feel more confident? What tends to trigger self-doubt? Awareness is the first step to managing these. Identify your "power poses" & your "confidence kryptonite" – situations or individuals to approach strategically.

Try This: Keep a journal for a week, noting the situations & people that boost or drain your confidence.

  1. Embrace Your Unique Story & Strengths: Stop comparing your Chapter 1 to someone else's Chapter 20. Your journey is yours alone. What makes you unique? What are your inherent talents? Own them. Celebrate them. Instead of envying someone else's success, identify your unique strengths and craft a business around them.

Try This: Write down three things that make you unique & three things you're genuinely good at. Then, brainstorm ways to leverage those in your business.

  1. Remember Your "Why": Connect your daily actions back to your deeper purpose. Why did you start this journey? What impact do you want to make? A strong "why" can fuel your confidence through even the toughest times. Write down your "why" & keep it visible as a constant reminder of your mission.

Try This: Create a vision board that represents your "why" & look at it daily for inspiration.

Building Confidence is a Marathon, Not a Sprint

Whew! That’s a lot, I know. But remember, building unshakeable self-confidence is an ongoing practice, not a one-time fix. It's about integrating these steps into your life in a way that feels authentic & sustainable for you. Some days you’ll feel like you’re soaring, other days it might be a bit of a wobble. That’s perfectly normal. That’s human.

The most important thing is to keep showing up for yourself, to keep taking those small, smart steps, & to believe in your incredible capacity to grow, to achieve, & to build the life & business you truly desire. You’ve got this. I truly believe that.
