It's about forging ahead, not just getting back on your feet.
Remember that time my toddler daughter decided to redecorate the living room wall with my favourite YSL fuchsia lipstick – the one I’d saved for special occasions, a little treat for myself – just as I was about to join a crucial investor call? I felt that familiar wave of panic rise, a tight knot in my stomach. "Of all the days," I thought, trying to maintain a calm exterior while frantically scrubbing (with one eye on the clock and the other on my daughter's "masterpiece"). Yeah, "resilient" doesn't even begin to cover it! That moment, amidst the chaos, crystallized something for me: true fortitude, especially as a mum & a CEO, isn’t about avoiding the mess. It's about having the systems & the mindset in place to handle anything life (or a toddler with a creative streak & a penchant for high-end cosmetics) throws at you.

Fortitude at this level requires a proactive, self-led approach. It starts with mastering your mindset. One of the most powerful lessons I learned during my MBA (while juggling a newborn, let's not forget!) was the importance of owning your narrative. It's so easy to fall into the trap of thinking, “It’s the system! It’s the market! It’s the economy!” & yes, while external factors certainly play a role, ultimately, your response to those factors is what defines your entrepreneurial journey. This resonates with what I'm exploring in my PhD research: even within challenging structures, the most successful Black female entrepreneurs demonstrate incredible agency.
Honestly, I'm doing my PhD right now alongside raising four kids (ranging from toddler tantrums to teenage angst) & managing my businesses (oh, & those energetic Miniature Pinschers, Espresso & Cappuccino – don’t even get me started!). Just like you, my days are a constant juggle of meetings, deadlines, school runs, & the occasional "crisis" like a flooded bathroom thanks to my school-aged daughter’s latest "science experiment."
