Unlock Your Entrepreneurial Superpower: How Understanding Your Personality Type Can Drive Success (Especially for Mums!)

Hey lovely ladies,
Ever feel like you're navigating this entrepreneurial journey with a blindfold on, bumping into things, unsure of your next step? You know that feeling, right? I've been there, believe me. Four kids, a PhD, running multiple businesses... it's a whirlwind! And amidst the beautiful chaos (because let’s be honest, motherhood isis beautifully chaotic!), one thing I've learned is that self-awareness is an absolute game-changer. Before I really understood my own personality—my strengths, weaknesses, and how I operate best—I felt like a ship without a rudder, constantly battling overwhelm and questioning if I was even cut out for this. There's a study from the Journal of Business Venturing that actually shows a strong correlation between self-awareness & entrepreneurial success – fascinating, right? Discovering the power of personality insights, particularly Thomas Erikson's colour typology, was like finally getting a user manual for my brain, and it’s made all the difference.
Today, we're diving into something that might seem a bit "woo-woo" at first glance, but trust me, it's incredibly practical: how understanding your personality type can become your secret weapon for entrepreneurial success. And no, this isn't just about those generic personality quizzes. We're talking real, actionable insights you can use to boost your business, build a dream team, & even connect more deeply with your ideal clients.
I'm a big fan of using frameworks to clarify complex ideas, & one that's been particularly insightful is Thomas Erikson's colour typology (reds, blues, yellows, greens). Think of it like this: knowing your colour type is like having a user manual for your own brain. It helps you decode your strengths, your weaknesses, & how you operate best.
Now, you might be thinking, "Carlene, I'm a busy mum, I barely have time to shower, let alone analyze my personality!" I get it. Just the other day, one of my daughters decided my laptop was the perfect canvas for her glittery purple Play-Doh masterpiece—right in the middle of prepping slides for a webinar on strategic goal setting! Talk about a clash of creative energies! It took me a good 20 minutes (and a fair bit of frantic scrubbing) to get it clean enough to present, reminding me (yet again!) of the importance of having a dedicated workspace (even a tiny corner!) to keep the "beautiful chaos" somewhat contained. My client, bless her heart, was very understanding when I joined the call with shimmering purple fingerprints on my cheek. It's all part of the juggle. But this isn’t about adding more to your plate. It’s about working smarter, not harder. Even small insights into your personality can have a ripple effect, making everything from delegation to marketing so much smoother.
So grab a cuppa (or a glass of wine—it's 5 o'clock somewhere, right?), & let's explore how understanding your colour type can unlock your full entrepreneurial potential.
Knowing Your Colour: More Than Just a Label
First things first, if you aren't familiar with Erikson’s colours, there are plenty of resources online (a quick Google search will do the trick). But here's the thing: knowing your colour isn't enough. The real magic happens when you move beyond the basic descriptions to understand the practical implications for your business.
Here’s how understanding my own colour type (Red!) has transformed the way I operate:
••I've learned to use my directness in sales calls (while ensuring it’s empathetic!) to quickly establish value & close deals.
••I recognize my impulsivity can be a double-edged sword (I may or may not have accidentally hit send on a marketing email without proofing it!), so I've built systems to provide checks & balances, like scheduling & automation. There was this one time, early on in my business, when I sent out a newsletter with a glaring typo in the subject line – talk about a cringe moment! It taught me the hard way about the importance of having a "second pair of eyes" on everything before it goes out, especially when my Red impulsivity takes over.
••And importantly, I delegate & outsource the stuff that isn't a natural fit for my personality (like detail-oriented admin tasks—hello, virtual assistants!), because I know I'll only end up procrastinating with a good dose of anxiety if I try to do it myself. Honestly, if I spend too long on admin tasks, it’s a recipe for overwhelm. You know that feeling, right?
Leveraging Your Strengths (& Owning Your Weaknesses!)
This is where the real power lies. When you understand your natural strengths, you can leverage them to create a business that truly aligns with who you are. Are you a driven Red, a detail-oriented Blue, a sunshine-y Yellow, or a steady Green? Each colour type has unique gifts that can translate into entrepreneurial gold.
& let's be honest about the flip side: we all have weaknesses. My teenage daughter could write a novel on my shortcomings (bless her heart!). But the key isn't to beat yourself up about it, it's to OWN them. For instance, before I truly understood my Red personality, I’d charge into projects without a clear plan, which often led to wasted time & resources. It felt like I was constantly putting out fires instead of building momentum. Learning to embrace my strengths (quick decision-making, bold action) while mitigating my weaknesses (impulsivity, lack of detailed planning) has been a total game-changer.
••Recognize where you might struggle, & then build strategies to mitigate those weaknesses.
••This could mean delegating tasks that drain your energy (a 'Flow' pillar game-changer!),
••investing in coaching to address mindset blocks (a must-do for sharpening your mindset!),
••or building systems to keep your less-than-stellar organizational skills in check.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone!
Building a Dream Team (& Why it Matters, Especially for Foundation Builders like Amy, facing the challenge of scaling sustainably)
If you're a people-pleaser (like many of the amazing women I work with), building a team can be tricky. It's easy to fall into the trap of trying to do everything yourself, or hiring people who are just like you (which, trust me, isn’t always the best approach!).
Understanding your colour type can help you create a team that complements your strengths & fills in your gaps. As a Red, I intentionally seek out Blues who can bring detail & structure to my sometimes impulsive nature. & if you’re a more collaborative Green or Yellow, having a Red on your team can be invaluable for making tough decisions & driving things forward.
Marketing Magic: Speaking Directly to Her Soul
Think about it: Your ideal client also has a personality type. Understanding how different colours communicate & what motivates them is marketing gold. A message that resonates with a Red (direct, results-oriented) might completely fall flat with a Green (relationship-focused, collaborative).
So, what's her colour? Crafting marketing messages tailored to resonate with different personality types is like having a secret decoder ring. It’s not about manipulation; it's about speaking directly to her soul, addressing her specific needs & desires in a way that feels authentic & deeply understood. For instance, if you’re speaking to a Red, use direct, action-oriented language & focus on results ("Double Your Sales in 90 Days"). If you’re connecting with a Blue, provide data, details, & structure ("Our Step-by-Step System for Success"). If it’s a Yellow, emphasize fun, connection, and community ("Join Our Supportive Tribe of Entrepreneurs!"). And for a Green, highlight collaboration & long-term growth ("Grow Your Business Sustainably, Without Burnout"). Even your calls to action can be tailored: a Red might respond to "Claim Your Spot Now," while a Green might prefer "Let's Connect & Explore."
