Your Side Hustle Isn't Just for Pennies, Darling: It's Your Secret Launchpad to Freedom

Ever find yourself staring out the window during naptime (if you’re lucky enough to get one!), or scrolling through your phone after the kids are finally in bed, a little voice whispering, "There has to be more than this"? More flexibility than the 9-to-5, more purpose than just paying the bills, more you in your everyday life? You know that feeling, right? So many of us ambitious women, especially when we’re navigating the beautiful, often bonkers, chaos of motherhood, feel that pull. We dream of building something of our own, something that sets our soul on fire & fits around our families.
But the thought of launching a full-blown business? Well, that can feel like scaling Everest in your slippers, can’t it? Overwhelming, terrifying, & where on earth would you even start?
This is where I see so many incredible women turn to the "side hustle." & bless them, they’re often brilliant ideas! But too often, that little venture is seen merely as a way to bring in a bit of extra cash, a hobby with a small payout. Now, don’t get me wrong, a few extra quid in the bank is always welcome, especially when a block of cheese costs what it does these days! But I want to challenge that thinking, darling. Let’s reframe that into what it really is, a strategic side project!
From my perspective, shaped by my own entrepreneurial rollercoaster (which started way back with selling sweets in the playground!), my MBA, & my ongoing PhD research into the journeys of amazing female entrepreneurs, I see the strategic side hustle through a very different lens. When approached with intention, a good dose of personal responsibility, & some smart planning, your side project isn't just a bit on the side. It's a potent, strategic launchpad into the business & life you truly crave. It’s your first powerful step towards designing a future filled with purpose, freedom, & fulfillment, all while embracing the glorious whirlwind of family life.
The Strategic Side Hustle: More Than Just a Bit on the Side, Darling!
Let’s be honest, the term "side hustle" can sometimes feel a bit… diminutive. Like it’s not quite serious. But I want you to reframe that. Think of it as your entrepreneurial apprenticeship, your safe space to experiment, learn, & grow without the immense pressure or financial risk of going all-in from day one.
For us busy mothers, this approach is pure gold. It’s a chance to:
Test the Waters: Got a brilliant idea? A side hustle lets you dip your toe in, see if there’s genuine interest, & refine your concept before you remortgage the house or quit your day job. Aim to get at least 10 potential customers to validate your idea.
Build Your Business Muscles: You’ll start learning the ropes of marketing, sales, customer service, & managing your finances on a smaller, more manageable scale. Every little win, every problem solved, builds your confidence & business acumen. I learned so much from my first "proper" venture, Nisbett & George, which I co-founded during my university days after winning a spot in the E-Factor competition. It was a whirlwind, juggling a new baby & a new business, & while it taught me heaps about partnerships, it fundamentally showed me the power of starting, learning, & iterating, even when things are small.
Cultivate Strategic Thinking from Day One: This is crucial. Even if it feels small, treat it like the seed of the empire you intend to build. This means taking personal responsibility & ownership right from the start. It’s not just a hobby; it’s the foundation of your future. Ask yourself: Who is my ideal client, even for this small offer? What problem am I solving? How can I deliver exceptional value? That sense of ownership, even on a small scale, is what builds true entrepreneurial muscle. Reflections informed by my ongoing PhD research into women's entrepreneurship often highlight how these early ventures are critical for building not just skills, but the sheer resilience needed to navigate the path ahead.
It’s so easy to look at the challenges – the economy, the lack of time, the systemic hurdles that, yes, are very real. I often think about how, as millennials, we sometimes feel like we got the tough end of the stick. But what if the real power lies not in blaming the system, but in figuring out how you can navigate it? I truly believe, & I've seen it time & time again, that the magic happens when you ask, "Okay, given all that, what can I do? How can I take ownership of this small piece & make it work for me?" Just last week, I had a total calendar fail – double-booked myself, missed my eldest's netball match (cue the teenage eye-rolls!), & felt like I was failing on all fronts. It’s in moments like those I remember, "Okay, what CAN I control right now?".
Finding Your Fire: Why Your Side Hustle Needs Purpose to Truly Ignite
Now, here’s a piece of advice I give from the heart: if you’re going to pour your precious time & energy into a side hustle (especially when you’re already juggling so much!), make sure it’s something that genuinely lights you up.
This is where we talk about sharpening your Mindset – not just in terms of what you do, but why you do it. Your side hustle shouldn’t just be about the money; it needs to align with your intrinsic values, your passions, & your bigger vision for your life. Ask yourself:
What do I genuinely love doing?
What problems do I enjoy solving?
What kind of impact do I want to make, even in a small way, right now?
Does this venture feel like it’s moving me towards the life I want, or is it just another task on the to-do list?
When your side hustle is purpose-driven, something magical happens. That alignment becomes your rocket fuel. It’s what will keep you going when you’re tired, when the kids have been up all night, or when you face the inevitable bumps in the road. It’s the difference between a venture that drains you & one that energises you, leading to sustainable motivation & a truly fulfilling business. Smart Starts for the Time-Strapped Mum: Practical Steps to Get Your Hustle Humming
Alright, let’s get practical. "That all sounds lovely, Carlene," I hear you say, "but I have approximately 17 minutes of uninterrupted thought per day, & that’s usually in the loo!" I get it. Oh, I SO get it. I remember trying to map out marketing funnels for an early idea while one of my little ones was determined my notebook was a new kind of drum kit! It taught me quickly that you have to be laser-focused in the pockets of time you DO get, & that simple systems aren't a luxury, they're a lifeline, helping your days, well, flow a bit more smoothly.
Here are a few tips for getting your strategic side hustle off the ground without adding to the overwhelm:
Validate Smart, Not Hard: You don’t need a massive budget to test your idea.
Talk to people: Have conversations with your ideal potential customers. What are their biggest pain points? Would your idea solve a real problem for them? For example, if you're thinking of offering a meal prep service for busy families, chat with mums at the school gate. Ask them about their biggest dinnertime struggles - is it lack of time, picky eaters, or healthy options? Really listen to their answers & tweak your idea based on their needs.
Create a Minimum Viable Offer (MVO): What’s the simplest version of your product or service you can offer to test demand? Maybe it’s a small batch of handmade items, a single coaching session, or a mini-workshop. Think of offering a "Dinner SOS" package: one healthy meal delivered to their door, along with a quick recipe card for a side dish. It's low-commitment for them & gives you valuable feedback. Here’s a template: " is testing a new for busy families! Get a taste with our special offer: . Limited spots available! DM me to learn more."
Presell: Before you invest heavily in creating something, see if people are willing to pay for it. This is the ultimate validation. Offer an "early bird" discount to those who sign up & pay in advance.
Carve Out Time (Goodbye, Mummy Guilt!): This is a big one. That "mummy guilt" can be a real dream-killer.
Block it Out: Even 30-60 focused minutes a day, consistently, can achieve wonders. Treat it like an important appointment.
Communicate: Talk to your partner, your family. Explain why this is important to you. I remember one week feeling so overwhelmed with "mummy guilt" that I nearly scrapped the whole side hustle idea altogether! What helped was having an honest chat with Bear, my partner, who reminded me that my passions matter too, & that by pursuing them, I was also showing our daughters that they could chase their dreams, too.
My own partner has been an absolute rock, understanding that sometimes my PhD research or business focus needs dedicated time, & we work as a team to make that happen. It’s not always easy, & sometimes carving out that 'focused hour' feels like trying to negotiate a peace treaty between a hyperactive toddler, a demanding deadline, & Espresso, our younger Min Pin, who firmly believes my keyboard is a new chew toy. Cappuccino, her mum, just watches with an air of 'been there, done that, got the T-shirt.' It's in those moments you realise that 'perfect' working conditions are a myth; progress is about smart strategies & relentless, imperfect action.
Batch Tasks: Group similar tasks together. Dedicate one block to content creation, another to emails, etc.
Work Smart, Not Just Harder: Look for leverage. Can you repurpose content? Can you use simple tools to automate small tasks? This isn't about adding more hours to your already packed day; it's about making the hours you do have work more effectively for you.
Keep Systems Simple: You don’t need complicated software or elaborate processes when you’re starting.
Client Communication: A simple email system or even organized DMs can work initially.
Payments: PayPal, Stripe, or bank transfers are easy to set up.
Tracking: A basic spreadsheet can track income, expenses, & leads.
The goal is to create just enough structure to keep things moving smoothly without getting bogged down in tech overwhelm. As you grow, your systems can grow with you.
Here's a quick checklist to kickstart your strategic side hustle:
Identify your ideal client.
Define your offer.
Create a simple marketing plan.
Block out dedicated time each day.
Building Your Empire, Brick by Brick: How Today's Hustle Fuels Tomorrow's Freedom
Every step you take with your strategic side hustle, every lesson learned, every connection made, is a brick in the foundation of your future empire. This isn't just about the immediate income; it's about the long-term game.
Think of it as your personal MBA, without the hefty tuition fees (though my Cranfield MBA was invaluable, this practical experience is its own powerful teacher!). You’re:
Developing an Entrepreneurial Mindset: You’re learning to see opportunities, solve problems, take calculated risks, & bounce back from setbacks. This mindset is priceless & transferable to any future venture.
Understanding Your Market (Hello, Flair!): You’re getting up close & personal with your ideal clients. You’re learning what they need, what they value, what language resonates with them, & how to craft messages that truly connect. This is the heart of authentic marketing.
Establishing Your Core Principles: How do you want to do business? What are your non-negotiables? What kind of culture do you want to create, even if it’s just you for now? Your side hustle is where these principles take root.
Building Towards Autonomy & Impact: This is the big one, isn’t it? It’s what drove me from the corporate world, that deep yearning for the flexibility to be present with my family, the autonomy to make my own decisions, & the ability to make a direct, meaningful impact. Your side hustle, nurtured strategically, is a direct path towards that.
For example, I have a client called Jane, who had her eureka moment when she was trying to potty-train her eldest. So many accidents! So much extra washing! With Jane's determination to solve this problem, combined with an eye for style that she had acquired from her degree in fashion design, she created a range of waterproof mattress covers for parents that have now become an international bestseller. And it all started with that little side project! About Carlene Nisbett / Our Founder if you want to read a bit more about my own winding path.
When you see your side hustle in this light, as a vital part of a bigger picture, it shifts everything. It becomes an exciting adventure, a learning laboratory, & a powerful engine for your future freedom.
