Right, let's talk money, honey! Because let's be honest, nobody starts a business just for the love of spreadsheets. We want freedom, flexibility, and frankly, to be able to treat ourselves to something nice every now and then without checking the bank balance three times first. You know that feeling, right? There was this one time, after my third child, when I was terrified of raising my rates. I thought I’d lose all my clients. Turns out, staying small out of fear kept me stuck earning less than I was worth and attracting clients who weren't the right fit. Big mistake. Huge. Learned that lesson the hard way! It was only when I realised that my true value wasn't in my time but in the transformation I provided that I finally broke through that fear. More on that later...

Beyond Basic Pricing: Why Value is Your Superpower
Remember that time you spent hours, maybe even all night, perfecting a presentation for a corporate client, only for them to suggest a minor tweak and take all the credit? Yeah, that feeling of being undervalued is exactly why so many of us ditch the corporate world and build our own empires. Been there! Remember how deflated that made me feel? It's that feeling of "I'm pouring so much in, but it's just not being recognized." Sound familiar? Thought so.
But here's the sneaky thing: sometimes, even in our own businesses, we fall back into old patterns. We undercharge, we over-deliver, and we tie our worth to hourly rates instead of the transformative results we provide. Honestly, I think it's so easy to underestimate ourselves sometimes. In my early days of coaching, I was so worried about scaring clients away with higher prices that I ended up practically giving my services away. I crammed as much as I could into each session, working late into the night, convinced I had to over-deliver to justify even my low fees. The result? Total burnout. I was exhausted, resentful, & my bank balance wasn’t exactly thriving. That experience taught me a hard lesson: undervaluing yourself doesn't serve anyone. It doesn't serve your clients because they don't get the full power of your focused expertise, & it certainly doesn't serve you or your family. You know what I mean? It was like trying to run a marathon on an empty stomach – unsustainable, right?
This reminds me of something Rory Sutherland, the Ogilvy "Godfather of behavioural science," often says: "Value can be created in the mind every bit as much as it can be created in the factory." This is so important because it reminds us that the perceived value of what we offer is just as important – maybe even more so – than the actual nuts & bolts of the service itself. According to a study by Bain & Company , companies that excel at customer experience grow revenues 4% to 8% above their market. That's the power of perceived value in action! Premium pricing reflects this.
Think about it like this: a £50 bottle of wine might taste identical to a £15 bottle, but the experience, the story, the label, the whole shebang changes how we perceive it, & therefore, what we're willing to pay. You are the fine wine in this scenario, darling, not the supermarket plonk. So let's get you priced accordingly.
Packaging Your Brilliance: Creating Irresistible Premium Offers
This is where the magic happens. This isn't just about slapping a higher price tag on your existing offerings; it's about crafting irresistible packages that showcase your brilliance & make your ideal clients say "yes!" before they even finish reading the description.
Tiered Offerings: Giving Your Clients Choices (& Boosting Your Income)
Think good, better, best. This isn't about diluting your expertise; it's about giving your clients options that fit their budget & needs, while also creating different entry points into your world. This strategy is also reflected in the model of creating an Entry Offer, a Signature Offer, & an Ascension Offer, to cater to clients at different stages & deepen engagement with your business.
Good: Maybe your “good” tier is a self-paced online course. Perfect for someone just dipping their toes into your world.
Better: Your “better” tier could be a group coaching program, offering more support and community. Remember that feeling of belonging when you find your tribe? It’s powerful stuff.
Best: Your “best” tier? That high-touch, one-on-one experience with all the bells and whistles. Think personalized attention & tailored strategies.
Giving those options will also free you from the feast or famine cycle & bring you more predictable income. Just imagine being able to breathe a little easier knowing that consistent revenue is flowing in. Bliss!
Recurring Revenue: The Gift That Keeps on Giving (You and Your Clients)
Remember that feeling of landing a new client and then immediately worrying about where the next one is coming from? Yeah, that "feast or famine" cycle is exhausting, isn’t it? Recurring revenue models, like memberships or subscription-based services, provide a predictable income stream that allows you to breathe, plan strategically, & focus on serving your clients, not constantly chasing the next paycheck. Trust me, it’s a game-changer. It's like setting up a beautiful, self-watering garden – you nurture it initially, & then it flourishes with less constant attention.
Value-Based Pricing: Charging What You're Truly Worth
This is where so many of us get tripped up. We get caught in the "I don't want to scare them off with a high price" trap, forgetting that our ideal clients are not looking for cheap; they're looking for transformation.
What problem are you solving for them? How is your expertise changing their lives? What's one transformation you bring to your clients? What is that transformation worth? Once you truly grasp the value you provide, pricing confidently becomes a natural next step. This resonates deeply with Adrienne Weimer's philosophy about shedding the "beginner" narrative and "making yourself a big deal". In fact, Weimer often challenges entrepreneurs to ask, "What is that transformation worth?"
Handling Objections (Because They Will Come Up)
Let's be real, some potential clients might balk at a higher price. But here's the secret weapon: clean curiosity. Instead of getting defensive, get genuinely interested in their hesitation. Ask empowering questions like, "What specifically is holding you back?" & "What would need to shift for this to feel like a clear yes?" Often, the objection isn't about the price; it's about an underlying fear or limiting belief. & As an empowering coach, you can gently guide them through that. This reminds me of something I learned during my coach training: sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is simply listen & reflect back what you hear. It helps the client clarify their own thoughts & often unlocks the solution themselves. It's not about you having all the answers; it's about holding space for them to discover theirs.
Focusing on mindset is key here. Here are a few scripts you can use to navigate those tricky pricing conversations:
Objection: "It's too expensive."
Response: "I understand you feel that way. Many of my clients feel similarly before experiencing the transformation this programme offers. Often, they discover that the value they receive far outweighs the initial investment. What specifically makes you feel it's too expensive compared to the results you’d achieve?"
Objection: "I need to think about it."
Response: "Absolutely, taking time for important decisions is wise. What specifically do you need to think about? Perhaps we can explore that together now so you can feel confident in your decision today."
Objection: "I've tried other programs & haven't gotten results."
Response: "I hear that. It can be so frustrating to invest in something & not see the results you hoped for. What was missing for you in those other programmes? What specifically are you hoping to achieve this time?"
This proactive, mindset-focused approach can significantly reduce anxiety and boost your confidence.
