The Niche Decision: Why It’s Less About Markets & More About You (Especially If You’re a Mum!)
Ever feel like you're trying to be the Swiss Army knife of entrepreneurs? Offering a bit of this, a dash of that, hoping something will stick, but mostly just feeling... utterly frazzled? I’m Carlene Nisbett, founder of Femmeprenista, & if there’s one thing my own entrepreneurial journey – from selling sweets in the playground to navigating my MBA at Cranfield with a baby, to now doing a PhD with my two youngest – has taught me, it’s the profound power of clarity. Let’s be honest. As female entrepreneurs, & especially as mothers, we’re often pulled in a million directions. The demands on our time, energy, & attention are immense. So, when it comes to your business – the very thing you’re likely building to create more freedom, fulfilment, & financial independence – doesn’t it make sense that it should serve you & your family first?
This is where niche selection becomes an act of personal responsibility & strategic self-alignment. It’s about consciously designing a business that reflects who you are, what you stand for, & the life you want to lead. It’s about saying, "This is where I choose to plant my flag, this is who I am uniquely positioned to serve, & this is how I will do it in a way that energises, not drains me." I remember when I was starting out, I felt so lost trying to define what I actually wanted - the market seemed so vast and full of opportunities, and it was paralysing.

What has your journey taught you? The challenges you’ve overcome, the wisdom you’ve gained – these are often goldmines for niche ideas. Motherhood, for example, equips us with incredible resilience, empathy, & problem-solving skills. Don't underestimate that!
What does your gut say? My own journey, from choosing my university (UEL felt like finding my tribe after a false start elsewhere) to pursuing my MBA, has always been guided by a strong sense of intuition. Learning to trust that inner voice is a superpower.

I get it. The thought of "getting your niche wrong" can be paralysing. What if you choose, & then it’s not right? What if you limit yourself too much?

The key is to make an intentional, informed choice now, based on your current insights & passions. Smart, intentional action, even if it feels imperfect, is always better than staying stuck in fear-driven inaction.
Think of it like learning to ride a bike. One of my daughters, when she was learning, didn't get it perfect the first time. There were wobbles, a few tumbles. But she didn't give up. She kept adjusting, kept trying, & eventually, she found her balance & was off! It was that persistence, even when it wasn't easy or immediately "right," that got her there. Your niche can be similar. You make the best choice you can with the information & self-awareness you have, you test it, you learn, & you refine as you go. "There is no failure, only feedback," right?
This isn't about finding the one, perfect, unchangeable answer. It's about taking ownership of this foundational decision, trusting yourself, & moving forward with intention. I remember one of my first business attempts was focused on a very specific type of fashion design, combining upcycled materials with avant-garde silhouettes. And honestly? It was crickets. I felt so disheartened! It wasn't a failure, it was feedback that helped me refine my vision for the future! See, the market was too niche, & I didn’t have the resources to educate consumers effectively.
