When you’re an ambitious woman in business, especially if you’ve taken the leap from a corporate world where your contribution wasn't always directly tied to your name (I’ve been there!), seeing those sales figures grow can feel incredibly validating. I’ve seen businesses, & even experienced aspects in past ventures, where the turnover looked impressive, but underneath, the foundations were creaky. Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. "Carlene, this sounds like a lot of work!" or "I’m not a numbers person!" or "Where will I find the time?" And I get it. Truly. When you’re already juggling client work, marketing, family, & trying to remember whose turn it is for school pick-up (or in my case, which child needs what for which activity!), adding ‘KPI tracking’ to the list can feel overwhelming.

But here’s the shift:

  • It’s not about becoming a data scientist. It’s about asking the right questions & understanding the story your business is trying to tell you.

  • Start simple. You don’t need to track everything all at once. Pick one or two key metrics from each category that feel most relevant to your current goals & challenges.

  • Make it a rhythm, not a chore. Schedule a regular time – maybe monthly or quarterly – to review your numbers. A quick cuppa & a focused hour can work wonders.

  • Tools can be your friend. This doesn't have to mean complex software. A simple spreadsheet can be a great start. & as you grow, exploring more sophisticated dashboards, perhaps even leveraging AI-powered analytics via tools like Databox or Klipfolio to spot trends, can be a game-changer for working smarter.

  • Focus on insights, not just numbers. A single number rarely tells the whole story. Look for trends over time. If client satisfaction dips, why? If your onboarding time increases, what’s changed? This is where the real gold lies.
