Right, lovely female entrepreneurs, let's have a real chat. 2026. Sounds ages away, doesn't it? Like something out of a film, or at least far enough off that we can pop it on the "to-do later" list. But if there's one thing my rather unconventional journey – from selling sweets in the playground, through the strategic intensity of my MBA at Cranfield, to now juggling my PhD research on Black female entrepreneurship with the beautiful chaos of our four little ones – has drilled into me, it's this: the future has a very cheeky habit of turning up before we've even had a chance to finish our cuppa.

And for us, as ambitious female entrepreneurs, especially those of us who are mothers, spinning more plates than a circus performer on a unicycle, simply waiting for the future to knock politely just isn't in the playbook. We need to be the ones peeking through the letterbox, anticipating its arrival, & getting our wonderful businesses in order now. It’s not just about survival; it’s about thriving, about building ventures that are not only resilient but also deeply fulfilling & impactful. This is about taking personal responsibility for our trajectory, working smart, & future-proofing our dreams.

Honestly, 2026 will be here in a blink. Think about how quickly the last couple of years have flown by! The shifts in customer desires & expectations that experts are predicting for then aren't just whispers on the wind; they're trends that are already taking root. & the femmepreneurs who start preparing now are the ones who will be leading the pack, not playing catch-up. For instance, market analysts at Gartner predict a surge in demand for "composable business" models that allow for rapid customization and adaptation to changing customer needs – requiring businesses to be far more agile than ever before.

I remember when I co-founded my first 'proper' venture, Nisbett and George, way back when my eldest daughter was just a baby. We were so passionate about our ethical fashion concept. In some ways, we were a bit ahead of the curve, but perhaps we weren't listening closely enough to what customers then were prioritising over ethical considerations alone – things like immediate price point, or the specific accessibility needs of a new mum like myself. I remember the frustration of customers not being able to feel the eco-friendly fabric through the screen, which made it so much harder to convey its value. It was a tough, invaluable lesson in the critical importance of meeting customers where they are, while also intelligently anticipating & gently guiding them towards where you see the future unfolding. It’s not about abandoning your brilliant vision, but about strategically evolving how you connect that vision to their evolving desires. Ignoring those shifts is like stubbornly trying to sell artisan ice cream in the middle of a snowstorm – you might have the most incredible flavours, but you’ll be working incredibly hard for every single scoop!

Carlene, I can barely keep up with my emails!" & I get it. I’ll be honest, I resisted AI for ages! I felt overwhelmed, convinced it was too complex for my small business. I even signed up for a fancy AI tool that promised to automate everything, only to find myself completely lost in its settings, wasting hours trying to figure it out. It wasn't until I started small, focusing on one key area (like automating client onboarding with a simple chatbot), that I began to see the potential.

I see this constantly in my PhD research. The world of academia, much like entrepreneurship, demands continuous learning & adaptation. Just when I think a chapter is perfectly crafted, a new study or a fresh perspective emerges, prompting a rethink. It used to frustrate me, that feeling of "oh, not another change!" But now, I see it as an invitation to deepen my understanding & make my contribution even more relevant. Our businesses require that same dynamic approach.
