More Than Just 'Making Money from Home': Carlene Nisbett’s Strategic Guide for Ambitious Mums Choosing Their Entrepreneurial Path

Hello lovely! Let’s have a real chat, shall we? The phrase "make money from home" gets thrown around a lot, doesn't it? Especially for us mums, it often conjures up images of juggling kids and a laptop, desperately trying to find a few spare hours to earn a bit of extra cash. And look, the desire for that flexibility – for being present for the school runs, the nativity plays, and those endless "Mummy, watch this!" moments – is so incredibly valid. I live that reality every single day with my four amazing children – from my teenage daughter navigating her world, to my six-year-old full of stories from school, a whirlwind two-year-old, and now our precious new baby. Honestly, I know what it's like trying to type an email with Dora the Explorer blaring in the background, or showing up to a (non-client facing!) internal team meeting with only one eyeliner on because someone decided the carpet needed a spontaneous castor oil treatment! You know that feeling, right? You're trying to focus on work, but life's just...happening! This week, juggling everything, I missed a deadline for a crucial chapter of my PhD – but I decided to be present with my children instead, & that's okay.
But here’s the thing I’ve learned through my own winding entrepreneurial journey – from selling sweets in the playground, to co-founding a business as a new mum during my university days studying Fashion Design with Marketing, through the corporate world (and out again!), to doing my MBA at Cranfield with a baby, and now pursuing my PhD while navigating life with four children & two lively miniature pinschers, Cappuccino & Espresso, who add their own brand of chaos to the mix – there’s a world of difference between just finding a way to "earn a bit of extra cash" from home & strategically building a businessbusiness from home. Countless "opportunities" promise the world but deliver very little, like those schemes where you're pressured to buy a load of stock you can’t shift to your friends & family. One often leads to feeling like you’ve just created another demanding job for yourself, while the other can pave the way for genuine fulfillment, sustainable income, & that elusive work-life integration we all crave.
If you're a "Foundation Builder," someone just starting out on your entrepreneurial journey, still validating ideas, then my mission with Femmeprenista is to help ambitious women, especially mothers like you, move beyond the surface-level advice. It's about empowering you to make smart, intentional choices that align with your deepest desires & your long-term vision. It’s not just about the quick win; it’s about building something that truly supportssupports your life, not consumes it. Speaking of wrong turns, I remember joining one of those "make money online" schemes early on. I ended up spending more than I earned, & the promised flexibility? Non-existent! It was a hard lesson, but it fuelled my determination to help others avoid similar traps. About Femmeprenista / Carlene Nisbett
Intentionality Over Immediacy: Choosing Your Path Wisely
I get it. When the bills are piling up, or you’re yearning for more financial independence, the lure of "immediate income" can be strong. But I want to gently challenge you to pause & think bigger. For ambitious women, for mothers who are already juggling so much, diving into the first "work-from-home opportunity" that comes along can often lead to frustration, burnout, & feeling like you’re further away from your goals than when you started.
Think about it – you’re not just looking for a way to fill the hours or earn a few quid. You’re looking for a path that offers long-term fulfillment, growth, & the ability to make a real impact, right? That requires intentionality. It means stepping back from the noise & the trends, & really considering what you want your life & business to look & feel like. This isn't about just surviving; it's about thriving & that starts with making conscious, strategic choices right from the beginning. This proactive approach is something I champion, because, at the end of the day, we are responsible for the direction our lives take, even when the path seems challenging. Honestly, it's youryour life, own it!
Align with Your 'Why' & Your Unique Strengths: The Foundation of Fulfilment
One of the most crucial steps in choosing your entrepreneurial path is getting crystal clear on your personal 'why'. Why do youyou want to build something from home?
Is it for more time with your children during these precious fleeting years?
Is it to create financial independence on your own terms?
Is it to pursue a passion that sets your soul on fire?
Is it to make a specific impact in the world?
Your 'why' is your anchor, your North Star. When things get tough (& let’s be honest, in business, they sometimes do!), your 'why' is what will keep you going. It’s really funny because, in the midst of the "beautiful chaos" of my day, it's mymy "why" that keeps me grounded (& reaching for that glass of wine at the end of the day!).
Alongside your 'why', understanding your innate skills, your passions, & your unique talents – what we at Femmeprenista call your 'Flair' – is absolutely fundamental. What are you naturally good at? What do you genuinely love doing? What problems do you enjoy solving? The most sustainable & enjoyable home-based ventures are those that leverage these unique aspects of who you are. It's about building on your strengths, not trying to force yourself into a mould that doesn’t fit. As Simone Biles said, "I’m not the next Usain Bolt or Michael Phelps. I’m the first Simone Biles."
This deep alignment is a core tenet of our philosophy here at Femmeprenista, an idea that's central to how we help women build businesses that flourish. It’s not just about what you cancan do; it’s about what you’re meantmeant to do, & what will bring you joy & energy, rather than drain you. Think Like a CEO, Even if You're Starting Small (Especially if You're Starting Small!)
Now, this is a big one. There’s a huge mindset shift required when you move from looking for "work-from-home jobs" to "building a business from home." Even if you're starting with a tiny idea, a laptop on the kitchen table, & very limited hours, adopting a CEO mindset from day one is critical.
What does that mean?
Market Viability: It’s not enough to be passionate about something. Is there a genuine need for it in the market? Are people willing to pay for what you offer? This requires a bit of research & an honest assessment.
Actionable Step: Conduct simple surveys on social media or in relevant online communities to gauge interest in your potential product or service. Look for existing solutions people are already paying for & see how you can offer something unique or better.
Example: Imagine you love making organic dog treats. Survey local pet groups to see if there's a demand & what people currently pay. Can you offer unique flavours or cater to specific dietary needs?
Scalability: Even if you want to start small, consider the potential for growth. Does the model you're considering allow for scaling if & when you want to? Or will it always require you to trade hours for money?
Actionable Step: Brainstorm at least three ways you could automate or delegate tasks in your business as it grows, even if you're not ready to implement them yet. Think about virtual assistants, software tools, or strategic partnerships.
Example: If you're a virtual assistant, could you create training materials to onboard new team members or use project management software to streamline client communication?
Your Vision for Impact: What kind of impact do you want to make? How does this business model align with that vision?
Actionable Step: Write down three concrete ways your business will positively impact your clients or your community. How will you measure this impact beyond just revenue?
Example: As a coach, you might measure client success through their income growth, confidence levels, or work-life integration.
Personal Responsibility: This is huge. As a CEO, the buck stops with you. It means taking ownership of your decisions, your successes, & yes, your mistakes. It means being proactive, resourceful, & committed to finding solutions.
Actionable Step: List three potential obstacles you might face in your business & write down proactive strategies for overcoming them. How will you handle setbacks & stay accountable?
Example: What if a client is unhappy with your services? Have a clear process for addressing concerns & offering refunds or revisions.
I learned this lesson profoundly during my Cranfield MBA; true autonomy & impact came not from climbing someone else’s ladder, but from building my own. It was a challenging path, especially with a young child at the time, but the clarity it gave me was priceless. It solidified my belief that life is about the quality of it, not just the quantity of money in your bank account. Like Myron Golden says, "Money is a reward you get for solving problems." This CEO mindset isn't about being overly formal or corporate; it’s about being strategic, intentional, & taking charge of your entrepreneurial destiny. It’s about building a real asset, not just finding a way to pass the time. Honestly, it's about building a business, not just finding another job!
Beyond the Generic Listicle: Asking the Right Questions
You’ve probably seen them – those endless blog posts listing "101 Ways to Make Money from Home." While they might spark an idea, they rarely provide the depth needed to make a truly strategic choice, especially for ambitious mothers.
Instead of just looking at whatwhat you could do, I encourage you to develop a framework for howhow to choose. Here are some Femmeprenista-aligned questions to ask yourself when evaluating any home-based business opportunity:
Flexibility – The Real Deal: "Does this model trulytruly offer the flexibility I need as a mother right now? Or does it just look flexible on paper but actually require rigid hours I can't commit to?" Remember those 12-13 weeks of school holidays! Your business needs to work withwith your family life, not against it.
Long-Term Passion & Engagement: "Can I see myself doing this with genuine passion & enthusiasm in 3-5 years? Or is it just a means to an end that will leave me feeling unfulfilled?"
Leveraging Your Unique 'Flair': "Does this opportunity allow me to use my unique skills, talents, & passions? Does it light me up?"
Alignment with Your Values: "Does this business model align with my core personal & professional values? Will I feel proud of the work I’m doing?"
Energy & Well-being: "Will this type of work energise me or drain me? Does it allow for the well-being practices I need to stay healthy & happy?"
Scalability & Growth Potential: "What is the realistic potential for growth & income? Does it match my long-term financial aspirations?"
Market Demand & Viability: "Is there a real, paying market for this? Have I done any research to validate this beyond my own assumptions?"
Answering these questions honestly will help you filter out the noise & focus on opportunities that have the potential to be both profitable & deeply fulfilling. It’s really funny because, when you ask the right questions, the answers become so much clearer!
Work-Life Integration by Design, Not by Chance
One of the biggest reasons many of us mums are drawn to entrepreneurship is the promise of better work-life balance. But let’s be clear: balance isn't something that just happenshappens. It’s something you designdesign. & the business model you choose plays a monumental role in whether you achieve genuine work-life integration or just add another layer of stress to the infamous "juggle." Honestly, it's about integration, not some mythical perfect "balance."
The right home-based business model should enhance your life, not detract from it. It should give you energy, not sap it. This is where prioritising your well-being becomes a non-negotiable part of your business strategy. It’s not an afterthought; it’s foundational. If your business is burning you out, it’s not sustainable, no matter how much money it’s making. Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows!" As Lisa Nichols says, that overflowing "saucer" is where you serve from.
Think about what true integration looks like for youyou.
Is it being able to switch off completely for family dinners?
Is it having dedicated work blocks that allow for deep focus, & then dedicated family time where you're fully present?
Is it building a business that allows for travel & experiences with your loved ones?
The choices you make nownow, at the very beginning of defining your entrepreneurial path, will determine how closely your reality matches that vision.
Ready to Choose Your Path with Intention?
Choosing your entrepreneurial path is one of the most exciting decisions you’ll make. It’s an opportunity to craft a career & a life that truly reflects who you are & what you value. It’s about more than just "earning a bit extra from home"; it's about making a meaningful impact, building sustainable success, & creating a life you absolutely love, even amidst the beautiful chaos of motherhood.
My journey has taught me that while the path might sometimes feel slower or have more twists & turns when you’re juggling family (& in my case, a PhD on top of it all!), it’s your personal responsibility, your smart choices, & your unwavering commitment to your 'why' that ultimately pave the way.
If you’ve identified a potential home-based business idea but need help validating it, getting clear on your ideal client, & creating a foundational action plan before you invest significant time & money, our Spark Program is designed for entrepreneurs at exactly this stage.
