Authentic Work-Life Integration: Tips for Women Entrepreneurs

The Dog Days of Entrepreneurship (and How to Find Your Authentic Groove)

Feeling the juggle struggle? Find your authentic groove in the chaos! Tips for biz & life integration. #femmeprenista

Right, let's be honest. Ever feel like your business is a beautifully orchestrated chaos symphony, conducted by a toddler with a cymbal and featuring your pets? It’s a constant negotiation, a balancing act where sometimes the metaphorical (or literal!) dogs win. Because honestly, that’s my life some days. I was on a client call the other day, deep in strategy talk, when Cappuccino (my older, wiser Miniature Pinscher) decided she absolutely hadhad to stage a protest. Not a quiet one, mind you. More like a full-on, operatic howl, strategically timed to coincide with my key talking points. Espresso, her puppy-daughter (a whirlwind of black and tan fur), joined the chorus, seemingly objecting to my very existence in the office chair. My partner, bless him, tried to restore order, but you know how it is – sometimes the furry family members just have their own agenda! As a business coach for women, especially mums, I see this all the time. It's that constant pull in all directions, that feeling of being needed everywhere at once, while also trying to build something of your own. If you’re nodding along, feeling seen – you're in the right place!

Embracing the Beautiful Chaos: Authenticity Over "Balance"

So how do we navigate this beautiful chaos & create a life that feels genuinely integrated, not just perfectly balanced (because let’s be real, who actually achieves thatthat)? I’ve learned, often the hard way, that it’s less about finding a mythical "work-life balance" & more about embracing the messy, imperfect reality & finding an authentic groove that works for youyou. Sometimes, that means accepting the dog protests (or the equivalent toddler meltdown) as part of the soundtrack of your entrepreneurial journey. Sometimes, like when my toddler daughter decided my laptop was her personal canvas for a peanut butter masterpiece right before a crucial video meeting, it means taking a deep breath, grabbing the wipes, & remembering that these are the stories we’ll laugh about later. They're also the moments that remind us we are human, not robots, & that embracing our imperfections (& the occasional dog mishap) is part of the journey. It’s really funny, because… it’s true! I remember one particularly chaotic morning trying to finalize a presentation for a potential investor. My youngest had decided the kitchen floor was the perfect place for an impromptu art exhibition (using a full tube of bright blue paint, naturally), my eldest was having a full-blown wardrobe crisis because "nothing looks right," and Espresso decided to contribute to the presentation by chewing on the power cord to my laptop. Needless to say, things were a bit… frazzled. But you know what? We survived. I cleaned up the paint (most of it, anyway), we found an outfit that met with teenage approval, I rescued my laptop from Espresso’s artistic endeavors, and, miraculously, I still nailed that presentation.

Prioritizing Well-being (Even for the Furry Ones): The Key to Sustainable Success

That Cappuccino & Espresso escapade also made me think about setting boundaries – a real struggle for me, especially post C-section when I desperately needed help but wasn't getting it in a way that worked. Not just for our kids or clients (though that’s important too!), but even for our furry family members. The dog protest was hilarious, yes, but it was also a sign. They needed a walk, some fresh air, a change of scenery. & honestly, so did I. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of work & forget to prioritize our own well-being – what I call 'Fuel' in the Business Flourish Framework for Mums: Achieve Success Without Burnout – but this is the foundation of a sustainable business. Remember Lisa Nichols’ wise words: "Your job is to fill your own cup, so it overflows." Taking even small breaks throughout the day, stepping away from the screen, going for a walk (with or without protesting dogs!), or simply taking five minutes to breathe deeply can make a world of difference. Before I implemented my current system of time blocking and focused work sessions, my days felt like one long, blurry cycle of reacting to urgent demands. It was exhausting, and it certainly wasn’t making me a better entrepreneur, or a happier mum. When we prioritize our well-being, we’re not just taking care of ourselves; we’re creating the energy & focus we need to truly thrive in our businesses. & as an added bonus, it might even prevent future dog protests! As I always say, a robust system is key, especially when it comes to time management & boundaries.

Finding Your Authentic Groove: Practical Tips for Integration

So, what are some practical steps you can take to embrace the beautiful chaos & find your own authentic work-life integration? I've developed these strategies over years of juggling my own business with motherhood, PhD research, & all the beautiful chaos that comes with it.

  1. Schedule Dedicated "Do Not Disturb" Time: This is about creating space for deep, focused work that moves your business forward, what I call 'Flow' in the Business Flourish Framework for Mums: Achieve Success Without Burnout. Block out time in your calendar for this kind of focused work – no kids, no dogs, no distractions (unless absolutely necessary – because let's be real, life happens). Treat it as sacred, like an important client meeting. I also find it helpful to communicate clearly during this time that I’m unavailable for anything non-urgent, even to my partner or older children. Before I got serious about protecting my focus, my "work time" often felt fragmented and ineffective – like trying to build a house of cards in a wind tunnel. The shift to really owning those blocked-out hours was transformative.

  2. Communicate Your Needs: This is key for maintaining boundaries. Talk to your partner, family, or even your team about your need for uninterrupted work time. It's about setting clear expectations. Example (Family):Example (Family): "From 10am to noon, I'm in deep work mode. Unless it's a true emergency, please hold all questions, requests, and urgent pronouncements about who ate the last biscuit until after noon." Example (Clients):Example (Clients): "I typically respond to emails within one business day. For urgent requests, please contact my assistant at " Example (Team):Example (Team): "During project deep dives, we’ll use a shared online platform for all communication to avoid email overload. This helps us maintain focus and track progress efficiently."

  3. Embrace Imperfection: Things won’t always go as planned. The dogs will bark, the kids will interrupt, the tech will glitch. The entrepreneurial journey, like motherhood, is a windy path! It’s okay. Take a deep breath, adapt, & keep moving forward. Like my journey with four kids and a PhD, things might be slower or different, but owning your path and pace is non-negotiable. After all, I amI am the captain of my soul 😉. I learned this very clearly when I co-founded Nisbett and George post-university. I had a new baby, and all I wanted to do was pour my heart and soul into making the business succeed. However, my co-founder, without kids at the time, wasn’t able to match that intensity, and we both learned a hard lesson about needing to align on vision, capacity, and commitment.

  4. Prioritize Your "Fuel": Make time for activities that energize & replenish you – a walk, a yoga class, a coffee date with a friend, or simply five minutes of quiet time with a cuppa. It’s not selfish, it’s essential for sustainable success. My ongoing research on female entrepreneurs shows that prioritizing wellbeing isn’t just a “nice to have,” it’s a strategic advantage.

  5. Leverage the Power of Community: Connect with other women entrepreneurs who "get it." Sharing your experiences, challenges, and even your funny dog stories can make the journey feel less isolating and more supported. My Femme:Connect Community is here for exactly that!

It’s a place to share wins, ask questions, and find your tribe – whether you're navigating the school holiday juggle or figuring out the latest AI tool for your business. This also reminds me of how isolating those early days of Nisbett & George felt, fresh out of uni with a new baby, trying to figure it all out – community makes all the difference.

This journey, building a business while juggling all the other facets of our lives, is not always easy. It can feel like a rollercoaster at times, right? But it’s also incredibly rewarding. & it’s so much easier (& more fun) when we embrace the beautiful chaos, find our authentic groove, & remember that we're not alone. Share one of your own "juggle stories" below – let’s connect & support each other! It can feel lonely, right? Especially when you're juggling so much. Share one win this week below! My own coaching experience and the research I’m doing for my PhD on Black female entrepreneurship has really highlighted just how powerful the right environment and support system can be. It’s one reason why I’m so passionate about building community and providing the practical guidance I wish I’dI’d had during those chaotic early years.
